Cedar Point and Coney Island both had "shoot-the-chute" rides in their history. In the USA, only one park has an operating antique shoot-the-chute ride, where guests ride in boats through a long, dark tunnel, and end up skimming the top of a lake for a few seconds without guard rails on either side.
Give the name of the park, the name of the ride, and the year the ride was built....
-------------
Harpo
07-10-2003, 10:23 AM
The ride is easy, although I'm having a bit of trouble pinning down a date.
The park is Lake Winnepesaukah, commonly referred to as Lake Winnie. It opened in 1925. Their first ride was the Boat Chute, which is the only remaining shoot-the-chutes in the U.S. While I couldn't find an exact year for the ride, I found references pinning it to circa 1930.
I was fortunate enough to ride the Boat Chute in 2002.

Correct.....I found the date 1927 in a couple of places...

Hi sorry i no this isnt really allowed in the way this post is run, but i think i have a decent question, so i thought i would put it down & see if anyone wants to answer it...
Alton towers recently went to the local council, inquiring about the posibility of building a new coaster... The things i want to know are
1) What type of Coaster was it
2) What was the councils answer to the proposal
3) What reasons did they give
4) What was Alton Towers response
I think this is relitavely difficult so give it a go
Coasterholic14
07-10-2003, 01:37 PM
Here are the answers i could find to your questions
1) The new coaster planned would be a wooden coaster
2) The council dissapproved of the coaster, labelling it "totally inappropriate"
3)
a. "Mr Massey has recommended the planning committee throw out plans for the rollercoaster proposed for the Churnet Valley site - which is listed as ancient woodland and classed as a Grade 1 site of biological importance."---site of biological importance
b. "development would have significant adverse impact on the ancient woodland, wildlife species and habitat on the character of the conservation area and the visual amenity of the wider landscape and countryside."---disturb wildlife
c. "Trees would have to be removed including some that although they are in poor condition could be retained for the benefit of the natural habitat."
d. "damage to roots would arise from laying the foundations for the ride."---damage
e. "I feel the ride would be a major intervention into an otherwise undisturbed Grade 1 historic landscape of high quality."---disturb undisturbed land
f. "It will cut an open swathe right through the landscape."
g. "It would generate noise disturbance in an otherwise tranquil area and the previously uninterrupted view of the garden and winding woodland out to the Churnet Valley will be lost."
4)"Alton Towers has pledged minimum environmental impact over its plans for a multi-million wooden rollercoaster. Specialist assessments made on behalf of the theme park reveal that decibel levels will generally be below existing background noise."
"The long-distance ride will result in the loss of 164 trees but the planning application before Staffordshire Moorlands District Council says the vast majority are lower grade and will be replaced."
"Disruption to badgers, bats and other wildlife would also be kept to a minimum as construction proceeds for the 2005 opening."

OK, this one's probably much too simple, but I'm going to ask it anyway, as it's a little bit different from the typical questions asked here. But, I'll add a couple of extra parts to make it slightly more challenging.
What coaster is touted as having been the favorite wood coaster of Elvis Presley, where is it located, when was it built, and when was it moved to its current location?
flgirl
07-10-2003, 02:24 PM
Mid-South Fairgrounds and Libertyland, where you'll find North America's oldest wooden roller coaster and Elvis Presley's favorite ride, 'The Zippin' Pippin.'
Harpo
07-10-2003, 02:36 PM
OK, quick! You're on the right track! Finish the full question!
However, it isn't North America's oldest coaster, in spite of the recordings at the park. The oldest is Leap The Dips at Lakemont Park, built in 1902. (Just rode that one last weekend, although I'd also experienced it in 2000.)
Oh... Joshua...
I contacted Lake Winnie, and, sure enough, 1927 is the correct year for the Boat Chute.
flgirl
07-10-2003, 03:07 PM
You'll shake, rattle and roll on Elvis' favorite wooden roller coaster!
One of the oldest operating wooden roller coasters in North America, the Zippin Pippin is as popular today as it was in the early 20th century. It is 2,865 feet long, travels 20.8 mph, increasing to 40 mph at the maximum drop of 70 feet. Ride duration is 90 seconds. Great care is taken to replace its wood regularly to preserve its structure. Manufacturer is Amusement Device Co.
It was built in 1923.

Coasterholic14
07-10-2003, 03:54 PM
Correction, the Zippin Pippin was actually built in 1915, called Pippin, and opened at the East End Park (now Overton Square) in Memphis. It was moved in 1923 to the fairgrounds at a cost of $45,000. The flow was changed to a figure eight. The fairgrounds later became Libertyland and the roller coaster was renamed Zippin Pippin.
Harpo
07-10-2003, 04:15 PM
OK, I'll give it to flgirl, even though Coasterholic had to finish it for you! Maybe the two of you could work together on coming up with the next question!
1915 is when the ride was built, with it being moved (and, apparently, reconfigured) in 1923.
Incidentally, just over a week before he died, Elvis rented all of Libertyland during the nighttime hours for himself and 10 friends. During that time, he apparently rode the Zippin Pippin for 2 straight hours.

Ok! Here is my question:
In 1995 a coaster was built that has the most inversions for a complete circuit coaster.
1- What is the name
2- who was the designer
3- where is it
4- how many inversions does it have
Harpo
07-11-2003, 03:14 PM
I believe the 1995 coaster to which you are referring is Dragon Khan, designed by B&M (Bolliger & Mabillard), located at Universal Port Aventura in Salou, Spain, containing 8 inversions.
Of course, it no longer holds the record, but apparently it did in 1995.

Thx Harpo, i have been dying to ask this question!! Ok, i know u r all tired of six flags questions, but this one i think is really neat...its a multi-part question.
Ok, the first Six Flags park to open was Slix Flags Over Texas in 1961. Who was it that opened the first six flags park, why did he decide to call it Six Flags Over Texas, what was the first name he thought of for the park, and what where the original six flags parks?
I know its a lot, but i think this is a good thing for coaster-freaks like myself to know.

Okay I'll try to answer your question coasterholic.
1) Angus Wynne JR. opened the First six flags park.
2) Wynne decided his park would have 6 areas based on the governments that ruled Texas(Spain, France, Mexio, Republic of Texas, The Confederate States and the USA) named after The Six Flags of Texas.
3) First name he thought of was Six Flags under texas but decided Texas should not be under anything.
4) the original six flags parks were:
Six flags over Texas- Arlington, Texas
Six flags Over Georgia- Atlanta,Georgia
Six Flags Over Mid-America(now Known as Sig Flags St. Louis)- ST. Louis,Missouri
I think I got number 4 right but not for sure.
Coasterholic14
07-14-2003, 12:17 PM
good job, u must have that issue of Roller Coaster! Just a few things to make minor corrections to so not to confuse them! The original was actually Texas Under Six Flags, but Six Flags Under Texas was realativelyclose. Also, he called it Six Flags Over Texas, because he wanted to base it on Texas history, and Texas history included 8 changes in sovereignty, with 6 gov'ts having flown their flags over the state.
kbendiksen, on to u!!!!!!!
kbendiksen
07-14-2003, 01:13 PM
No I don't have that issue I just did a google search on six flags history. Now onto my question.
The question I have is on the worlds oldest standing rollercoaster which is also the last of its kind in north america. What i want to know is.
What Type of rollercoaster is it?
(examples of the type i'm looking for would be like floorless, steel twister.)
the year it was built,it's location, who built it?
How many years was it standing but not operating and the year it reopened?
The name of the group that raised money to restore the coaster?
I don't think it is to hard of a question, but good luck

Holy smokes was that quick i guess it was easy.

I actually got my info from http://www.leapthedips.org/.
Now I gotta find a good question. Here we go, a Multi Question:
What is the name of the other remaining Figure Eight Side Friction Coaster besides Leap The Dips, when was it built, it is the oldest (BLANK) roller coaster, where was it found, and who restored it, and what it its other catagory besides Side Friction?
iAMpaste001
07-15-2003, 06:20 PM
The other figure-eight side friction coaster (also called "the oldest touring roller coaster") is Runaway Coaster, found in Rotunda Amusement Park in England. The wooden coaster was built in 1920, but in 1997 was found in a field in Holland. It was bought and restored by Jimmy Godden, owner of Rotunda.

i cant answer all of your question but i think its Fujiyama at Fuji-Q Highlands. I dont know the day but im pretty sure that it opened July of 1996 and it was themed to the real Mt. Fujiyama. I dont know the day it opened or how often trains depart the station--heck, i dont even know if im right--lol-sorry!

But I thought this park had closed.

Nope sorry, keep trying...oh and I believe Conneaut is still open...ask Harpo, I think he went there earlier this summer. He'd know better than me. :)

I was at Conneaut on July 6th. If it's closed, then I must have dreamt that visit, and my camera dreamt the photos! Of course, I suppose that's possible.
As I understand it, Conneaut was not sure if they'd have the funding to open this year. But, they apparently were able to pull the funding together, and, I believe, opened on Memorial Day weekend. The Blue Streak at Conneaut is a lot of fun. I highly recommend getting there to ride it this year, if at all possible, since no one really knows how long Conneaut will last.

On Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at the Disney/MGM Studios, there's a significant inconsistency between the images of the building as shown on the monitors during the preshow, and the actual building itself. What is this inconsistency? (Note: "significant" is the key word here. I'm not looking for something minor like one brick that's out of place! :) )

I always thought that was because the elevators you ride in are "ghost" elevators that fit in with the storyline.
Harpo
08-12-2003, 10:39 AM
No one's found it yet. The missing towers are expected due to the preshow, but that's looking in the right area. Also, it doesn't have to do with something as minor as color.
Here's a hint: With careful examination of the tower, it would be possible to guess the issue without seeing the preshow. Think physics.
Have fun!

Correct answer: "Hollywood Tower Hotel" sign on top of building is not shown in the preshow video. More than that, it occupies the same space as the towers that disappeared, hence, if it did exist at the time of those towers, they would have violated laws of physics by sharing the same space.

Question: (should be easy)
What kind of coaster is PC getting, where are they getting it from, what was its previous name, what is being built in its place, and how does it benefit both parks?
Top Thrill Drag
08-26-2003, 11:04 PM
They're getting a Vekoma Flying roller coaster. They are getting it from Paramount's Great America. It was named Stealth. In its place will be Boomerang Bay, a waterpark. For the last part of your question, it really can't be answered cause its more of a "your opinion" question than a fact--some people might not like Stealth leaving PGA (I know I wouldnt) and some people might like the fact that they are getting a waterpark. And the PC people might not be happy they are getting a VEKOMA flying coaster but they might just be happy that they are getting a new coaster. U get what I'm saying? But i think i've got the rest of the info right...

Coasterholic14
08-27-2003, 07:11 PM
TTD, you got it!!!! Even how it benefits both pretty much...see, PGA wants to build that new water park, which is one of their benefits. Also, the way the built the coaster and where they built it has sort of land-locked the land behind the coaster...and the way land is in california and how much it costs, they felt this would benefit them. Benefits carowinds, because they were in need of a new thrill ride attraction instead of the stupid family attractions and re-theming 1/2 the park to nick or animation station.

There were plans to turn the Mineral King Valley area of California into a ski resort. Thank you Joshua, I'll take it from here. :D Hello gang, its me... your favorite quizmaster!! :D Now if any of you have lived through my previous ramblings....errrr.... questions, you know the style. There is no simple solution to the question. However, I dont think this is a very hard question. But then on the other hand, when my calculus professor assigns those wretched problems, he doesnt think they are difficult either..... the class begs to differ. Anyways, onwards with the game, right?
I have seen many, many threads on this board debunking six flags, making it seem like a second rate park chain. To me, a park is a park, there are no real bad parks.... just like there is no real bad sex... well, yea I guess there is, but that is a different topic all together. This question will only consider 5 parks in the entire Six Flags chain: Six Flags Great America, Great Adventure, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, Six Flags Magic Mountain and Six Flags over Georgia. (Sorry you SFWOA fans, you were left out of this quiz:D ).
First off, we all know that the inferior SFMM is currently tied to the superior Cedar Point, having the most rollercoasters in one park. However, considering coasters that have been demolished or removed, which one of these parks has had the most rollercoasters in its park? Note: I am considering ALL rollercoasters that have ever been in that park. This includes coasters that have been removed, shipped to other six flags parks, etc. I do not count racing/dueling coasters as two different coasters. And for the special case of SFGrAv case, I did NOT count 'Lightning Loops as two different coasters.:D
2) (Dont worry, it gets much easier from here.) Which of these park(s) has the most B&M coasters?
3) Which of these parks had, the greatest combination of Arrow and Intamin coasters in its parks. (once again, this question is considered throughout the park's history).
4) How many of these theme parks had a rollercoaster, that was of the same manufacturer of the removed ride, "The King Cobra" at Paramount's Kings Island?
5) Which of these parks has the most Premiere rollercoasters.
6.) If SFMM has 16, with the most rollercoasters currently in one park, which park out of those 5 listed comes in 2nd place?
7) Name the final park out of those 5 that did not appear in any of the previous 6 answers.
Note: This question may take a little research.... unless you are a Six Flags genius, then kudos to you. Have fun with it and good luck.

raptorrvnge4928

6) If SFMM has the most operating rollercoasters with 16, which of these parks comes in 2nd witht he most operating rollercoasters.
7) One of these parks listed was not an answer to the previous 6 questions, which one was it? (This question would make sense if you got the other 6 correct).
RCTXtream

I'm still confused but i'll give it a shot.
These are my answers......
1. Cedar Point had the most rollercoasters total
2. Magic Mountain had the most B&M coasters
3. Cedar Point has the most combo of Arrow and Intamin coasters
4. I dont think any of the two had a ride manufactured by Togo
5. SFMM didn't have any Premiere so Cedar Point would have the most made by them
Numbers 6 and 7 are probably not right but i'll try at them....
6. If you are only talking about SFMM and CP, then CP would come in second right?
7. I'm going to take a stupid guess, SFMM......I dont really know.
Well those are my answers. I dont really think some of them are right but oh well. At least I tried.:)

Well I personally derive this from the fact, that in the thread that is entitled "what the...", you proceeded to bash ragingbegal about his 'advice' he gave for somebody who alledgedly downloaded a copy, that may not have even been downloaded illegally. Had you actually read his post, you would have learned that what he proposed as a solution, was in fact a joke. Do you remember that one Coaster Extremist? Ouch. I suppose you don't... I presume this by the fact that if you did remember that, you would not have replied....
... and on rcdb.com, did you click on each theme parks link, look at the coasters that are currently there, then look at the ones that were dismantled?
To break this down a bit simpler for you, coaster, here is an example of the links that rcdb provides for you, regarding this question... click here (http://www.rcdb.com/locationdetail2.htm)
Now, after learning how to do a little research, could you honestly still say this was a really hard question to answer?

3) SFGrAm
4) SFGrAdv

Again, you won't be able to find this info on rcdb; you'll have to look elsewhere.
In the history of Six Flags Over Georgia, there has been one case of a coaster derailing, destroying part of the coaster in the process.
Here's the question, and it's a three parter.
1.) Which coaster was it?
2.) How many people died or were injured?
3.) What was happening to the coaster when the wreck occured?

Well, in a shameless effort to try and restart this thread, here's a softball question. (Well, OK, it's easy for anyone that knows my favorite park, which should make it remarkably simple!)
In 2004, there's a park that will have coasters celebrating their 5th, 10th, 15th, 25th, 35th, and 40th "birthdays." (I.e., they were built in 1999, 1994, 1989, 1979, 1969, and 1964.) What is the park and, listed by year, what are the coasters?
Park:
5th:
10th:
15th:
25th:
35th:
40th:
Oh, I should also comment that 2004 will be the 135th operating season for the park (134th anniversary, 135th season, since the 1st anniversary would actually be the 2nd operating season), and my 35th consecutive season visiting that park.

Hmmm... red, I've never heard of the Mindbender derailing, ever. Can you tell me what happened? Did the car actually leave the track?
Also, regarding my question... not only did a single car derail, the ENTIRE TRAIN derailed. Again, this one will be difficult to track down... so here's a hint.
There's only been 12 coasters at SFoG. In order of construction, roughly...
#1 - Dahlonega Mine Train
#2 - Mini Mine Train *
#3 - Great American Scream Machine
#4 - Mindbender
#5 - Z Force *
#6 - Ninja
#7 - Viper *
#8 - Batman: The Ride
#9 - Georgia Cyclone
#10- Georgia Scorcher
#11- Deja Vu
#12- Superman: Ultimate Flight
* - Removed from park.
Since I've never heard of the Mindbender derailing, that's not it. That leaves 11 coasters for people to research.

Squid, I don't remember the dates involved with the Mindbender derailments, but I think that at least one of them occurred when it was painted brown. So at least one occurred before it became the Riddler's Mindbender. Brown may have been a rust protectant for all I know.
The same thing happened on both occasions. The train was coming around the final bend just above the midway games, and something, I've always guessed the weld in the track where it went from bent to straight, caused the front wheels of the front car to disengage, bending the car up and over the track about 4 to 6 inches at an angle. I was so astonished the first time, arriving after it happened, that I thought maintenance was doing routine work and had lifted the car up. Then I realized there were still passengers in some of the cars. It really worried me when I heard the coaster was back up and running 2 hours later.
The second time happened like the first, except I was in the vicinity when it happened. There was a holler, but you hear that all the time on coasters. Then we realized people were laughing and calling out. Turning around on the ground, we saw the front car in the same position as the last time I was in the park. I was too nervous to ride Mindbender for some time after that.
My memory is hazy, but it seems to me that the final curve looked reworked when I visited the last few times. I wasn't looking for that however, so it was just a casual observation.
