Its hard to pick winners this year. The teams are all so unique. Especially the west. Wild come back from 3-1, twice. Anaheim defeats Dallas & Detroit. In the east, Ottawa hasn't had much playoff experience past the first round. New Jersey has TONS of experience, but I find them too boring. :)
I don't know if the Wild will actually win, but I've gotta vote for my state's team.
Go Wild. That is all.

As much as I don't like the Sens (I'm a leaf fan....rivals), I would still like to see them win.

I thought it might be something like that. ESPN occasionally has the same problem with scores not being updated or showing a final when the game is still being played.

Giguere hasn't given up a goal in more than 2½ hours of action. He extended his scoreless streak to 153 minutes, 17 seconds, dating to Game 6 against Dallas in the second round
Got that from ESPN so if he makes it almost to the 2nd period he will have it tonight.

I'm not sure what Roy's is. That 168+ minutes for Roy is just OT shutout streak (I think anyhow) and Jiggy's OT streak is 153+
And it's already 1-0 Ducks and Gaborik didn't score on a breakaway.

Just in case you hadn't seen the official latest figures . . .
Giguere is up to 213 minutes, 17 seconds of shutout hockey.
According to the 2002 NHL Official Rule & Record book (yes I have a lot of time on my hands), the longest streak in history is 248 minutes, 32 seconds by Normie Smith of Detroit vs. the Montreal Maroons in 1936.
Looks like Giguere has a good chance at making some history on Friday . . .

That Devils goal should have counted, but still, I can't stand their style of play. BORING!
As for low seeds winning, I'm not sure, but Montreal in '93 and '86 were pretty low seeds. On the other hand, the current seeding format is relatively new (10 years or less I think). Previously, it was divisional seedings first, then the division winners played each other for the conference finals.
TRIVIA TIME!
Can you name the two conferences and 4 division names before the NHL changed the division and conference names to geographical locations. Hint: They were named after people who had a large impact on the game and there are still some awards named after them.

They are a very nice team, but have a big hole in the net. You won't go anywhere without a decent goalie and all of them on Atlanta aren't even decent although Numinen (sp?) might be ok in the future.
I think the Lightning can be very exciting next year with a little more depth on that team. Great goalies, very good first line and ok second line right now.

Welp its devils 1-0 Martys' 5th this season playoff shutout. Man the ducks were smeared all over the ice tonight. But i gotta hand it to giguere, he made some pretty damn good saves otherwise devils scoring would have been higher.
*edit* How can i forget to say.....Bulldog John Madden kicked ass tonight along with friessen.

The 1st period was OK. I was distracted, oh look something shiney! :D, and I wasn't really watching much of the rest of the game, especially the 3rd. But the devils seemed to 'pwn' the ducks. :( Stupid Trap.

I think the series will go 6 games. Hopefully for the ducks ;)

Yep, stupid trap. The game actually put me to sleep :(
On another note, the Avs now have a HUGE hole in net. David Arbicher is their backup and he doesn't look like he is ready to be the #1. LaCroix better pull another big trade out of the hat again.

I don't think either one is the answer. Belfour is getting a bit too old and won't be in the NHL much longer IMHO and Cujo, well, he has NEVER performed good enough in the playoffs. Cujo is one of those players that seems to just play good enough to lose.

Actually, unwatchable is still unwatchable. If it was the Bruins, I might not hate the team, but I still wouldn't be able to watch it. And my biggest concern is this. If avid hockey fans like me and my wife cannot watch the Stanely Cup finals because it IS boring, what chance does the sport have long term. This is a VERY serious problem and it started in 1995 when the Devils won the Cup with the trap and many teams copied their style and really ruined the game. The obstruction crack down stopped after a couple months like always and it really shows during the playoffs.
And the worst part is, when you do watch the Devils over a number of games, from this series to the Ottawa series, they don't have to trap. They are a very talented skating team that COULD be very exciting to watch. Instead, watching grass grow is just as thrilling. :(

Listen bruin, Its not their fault (devils) that the other teams cant make the game exciting enough to penetrate their awesome style. Jeesh! Dont blame the team thats winning the cup.
BTW, do you like soccer? This sport averages about an average 1,2,3 goals tops per game.....with both teams! And yet this sport is gaining popularity. I know its a different sport but.........
And i dont think that if this sport ever loses its popularity, that it would be cause of the trap! Its just that the game is not pushed and promoted or even get enough sport page headlines. Seriously, im sure that up in canada, their hockey is always headlining the sport papers. But over here! Its nothing but baseball, which by the way is the most f*cking boring sport out there, basketball and football. Hockey is not pushed well here in the states IMO.
I've watched western side hockey and noticed a much more faster paced hockey thats constantly on goalies ends. But the devils so called "neutral- zone trap" is not that agonizing watch like you guys all say. They still play a very exciting game and i dont understand why people act like their style is like COMPLETE night and day difference from other teams. They still play all over the place!! You guys act like that their game is all 55mins neutral zone, 5 minutes goals.
I just dont understand how a game can be sooo boring when yet, win so many games to get to the stanley cup. :( The winning alone is what makes it exciting enough. I just dont understand you guys. :(
Or..........is it that you guys just cant stand the devils and just has to find ways to put their team down.:p :haha:

Theres reasons hockey is not promoted as much as NFL MLB And NBA.
Ad Revenue !
I have watched hockey games ( i actualy timed it one time) and it was a whole 15 Minutes between comercial breaks. could you even imagine a NFL Or MLB or NBA going that long without a comercial? NLF has a comercial after every play practicly.
Hockey Reveniues are mostly generated by ticket sales ( and Tshirts Jerseys Ect) As apposed to the others that get a LOTmore money from TV contracts then the NHL does. But unless they change the game drasticly ( give them lots of time outs or something), hockey will never get the big TV deals the others get because they are severly limited in how many comercials the can have during game play compared to the other sports.
Eventulay the NHL is going to have Severe finacial isssues ( they have them now) when the revenue generated from the areanas they play in is maxed out and the player saleries continue to rise
.

Actually, I really do not like to watch soccer. It's mostly just running up and down the field and dumping the ball deep. As for the Devils, I actually used to like the team prior to their cup win in 1995 when they introduced the trap. Before that, they did have an exciting style and it was successful (a couple of eastern conf finals). The strike season caused alot of problem with the timing of the skill players and NJ introduced the trap which without a doubt was VERY successful. And it was imitated alot.
And when I watched the NJ games, it IS the neutral zone trap. True the game isn't just played in the neutral zone. It's dump it in, Brodeur gets it, passes it up, NJ dumps it in, other team gets it, goes up the ice, dumps it in. Repeat for 3 periods. There IS a reason why the Ducks only have 32 shots in 2 games and it is an extremely effective trap. NJ will win with it, but it will hurt hockey overall when even more teams try to imitate the style, especially since there is a real lack of talented players out there (expansion really diluted the talent pool).
EB hit key points on why hockey won't be big in the states, but the ad revenue is only part of it (and yes, the NHL is already heading to that train wreck with out of control saleries). In the US, scoring is necessary to make it into the public eye which is why the NHL is the 4th sport even though it is a better game to watch. The other is that it will have a tough time getting young fans who play due to the costs of the sport and lack of ice rinks, especially in warmer climates. That's the reason for the large following of the other sports and the growing popularity of soccer in the US (although soccer will not be a mainstream sport on TV in the US anytime soon).

They are building many rinks in the south (in our area anyway) And they already have a very large number of High scholls ( enought to have several Class levels , mostly class levels are based on # of students in each school not realy on skill levels, but the big schools have a larger talent base ect...) that play and enough teams for a State championship tourneyment.
But i do think that Hockey could be very big if it was promoted better like the NBA ( they should be able to generate the same revinue as NBA teams do since they play in the same arenas and have nearly as many games) and was on major networks and not religated to cable TV only.
You can Make any sport popular with the right promotions, Just look how big these X game things have goten over the last 10 years mostly due to the fact that they are promoted heavely. And they can tape them and put comercials in however often they want too.Auto racing is the same 10 or so years ago the only showed Indy 500 and Daytona on TV now thiers one every week.
But the potential Ad reveinue for the NHL is just not there due to the game itself not allowing for very many comercial brakes and the Major TV networks know this.
Iv seen replays of Hockey games where they cut out in the middle of play for comercials but you cant do that live.

Bake and bruin, i've just read both of your post and i must say thats a real bummer to read. Im new to this sport and this is all new to me. I just only believed it was the lack of audience that they could draw for the sport. But now i can see how they hurt finacially in revinues. Young fans are unable to play in warm seasons. Rediculously high salaries (just reduce those rangers salaries by half and all will be solved)...............
There has to be some good news for the sport, one major turning point to boost it!?!?

Very true about the growing number of soccer fields, but the boom looks pretty restricted to amature levels. Pro soccer still gets no notice in the US and advertising during a soccer game is even worse than hockey.
The X-games are very popular, but it's a yearly event verses a seasonal sport. It's easier to get the interest level up on once a year type sports. If there was 6-7 months of X-games on TV, I think interest wouldn't be nearly as great.
I'm not as sure about NASCAR. It seems to be a southern thing. I never really heard about it until I moved to Florida. Indy-car used to be big until the split between IRL and CART. Since then, it seems it hasn't been as popular.
But you are right that the ad revenue is one thing that hurts the NHL, but it's only one part of an overall problem. If you look back 10 years ago, the ratings were about the same as they are today with less exposure (only on cable with fewer people having cable).
I think we'll have to see what happens after the lockout/strike after next season. I suspect that there will not be hockey for at least a year unless the owners fold like they did for the last negotiations which has put them in this postion they are in now.

I realy meant X game like sports, such as skate boarding and snowboarding things seems they are on all the time.
They are in for some serious problems when the labor deal goes off. And i dont think even if they were getting the TV money the NBA gets would help because then their saleries would be even higher. All sports are going to be in trouble soon
if the saleries dont get under control. they already at the limits of stadium revenue generation by pricing tickets out of the price range of the average fan. This hurts hockey worse then other sports because of the limited coverage. I very supprized the World series and Superbowl are not on pay per view yet.

I agree based on that game. That's why the Devils confuse me so much. Just look at that talent they have on that team and how they can skate like crazy up and down the ice. There is NO REASON they should be a trapping team. If the game last night was the style of play they would use all the time, I'd be a Devils fan because everything they do in the organization is great from taking care of their players to keeping reasonable salaries. What a game. 2 games in a row without the trap. Now this is great hockey. I'm looking forward to a great finish.
And how about Kariya. So much for that soft label. The guy was out cold AND he comes back and almost scores on his first shift back. And then he does score. Personally, I thought he got knocked out like Lindros a few years back and he'd be out for the rest of the series.
Oh, and that should have been an interference penalty and though it was a clean hit, Stevens always knows what he's doing...and that is taking out the best player, but legally. Still, I'd love to have him on the B's.

I wanna post one more thing that was botherig me at work today that i forgot to mention in my last reply. You guys are absolutly right about the fans that booed giguere. I was completely appauled by what ive heard. Its fans like that , that gives new jersey devils a bad name. I said to myself, my god the devils won, there was no reason to boo anymore. That was totally disrespectful on a great goalie. Its sad that when fans of the opposing team doesnt recognise ( or are just plain stupid) a great goalie and give him credit. I mean, he beat, detroit and colorado and then only allowed 1 goal in the minnesota series then went to game 7 with one of the toughest teams in the finals!!! New Jersey fans are just plain f*cking stupid and ignorant!!!
I know when a opposing team scores a goal and you all boo, or when you lose to a team and you a boo. Its not that a big a deal. But, when a series is final and your team wins, theres no need to start disrespecting the losing team and start putting em' down. I mean, they just lost an important series! And your team won! So whats with the sh*t attistude!?!?!
Now, i do like brodeur alot but i was also disgusted in his conference meeting with that cigar at the end! He seemed very cocky and snobby about his win. I understand you are very excited and proud about your win but............no need to flaunt it like the way he did i think.

Congrats to the Devils. That was a perfect game they played last night. It really was a toss up for the Conn Smythe since Brodeur had all those shutouts. But I think it was the right call.
Now, time to hope they can hash out a labor agreement before the end of next season or next year might be it for a while.
Go Bruins!

Bruin, Giguere i will say fully deserved that trophy. He had a much harder route to take in these playoffs and when to the finals with the toughest like i said.
But i do wanna ask which i forgot, How does marty get the hart and vezina trophy? He is one of the 2003 finalist. I dont know how or if he will get them.

Those trophies are voted on, I think from the sportswriters, but not sure. Hart is league MVP so I think that is unlikely (remember all these awards are voted prior to the playoffs). It is rare for goalies to get the Hart. Only Hasek did it recently. Probably Nasland will win it.
Vezina is the best goalie trophy and he has a better chance at that, but once again, I think he'll lose that one. Most likely winner will be Turco in Dallas who had a great regular season.

Yes Turcos likly to get the Vezina trophy, he did have the lowest goals against average in like 60 years.
Turco also got The Beckett NHL Player of the Year
Hatcher should get the Norris trophy this year too.
as well.
I cant see Naslund not winning the Hart he had so many goals, I wonder how Todd Bertuzzi wasnt nominated.
We will find out thursday !
The Canadians hired Bob Gainey as thier new GM should be a good move, he did a lot to get get the stars where they are now.

Oh no, that's bad news. I really don't like Montreal. Arch rivals to the B's you know. Maybe he'll forget how to be a good GM like Sather did with the Rangers. :D

I was surprised at Brodeur getting it, but after thinking about it, I'm not. Brodeur has never won that trophy before and has been on of the best goalies the past several years. Since this was really Turco's first year as a starter, I think that played a huge role in the voting (remember, the awards were voted on prior to the playoffs).
Still, he wasn't a bad choice, but Turco did have a better year. (there might also have been a Dallas backlash since they have a HUGE team salary).

But for the best in 60 years deserves something beside some equipment company award( The Beckett NHL Player of the Year ).
He should have at least got the rookie of the year.
Edit:( after looking it up he may not have qualified due to how many games he played last season)

I think you're right about him playing too many games last year to be considered a rookie. Oh well, maybe next year.

Well, now I hate Hatcher. I can't stand the Wings. Looks like the Ducks are done already. Avs sign Kayria and Selanne.

Stars may be making a run at federov ( Why didnt they just trade them before then?)
Wing will have trouble getting rid if CoJo
Since Hasaik is back. And look next years for wing to dump a LOT of salierys especialy if they dont win the cup.
dont know that Kayria and Selanne will help snowball much unless thier new goalie just comes out of nowere and just has a realy good season.( mabey they will get cujo from Wing)
Training camp is in only is 2 months ! ! !

Wings have a ton of salary to get rid of and lots of old guys. I think Hatcher is there to replace Chelios (who I think is near the end now). Hasek really messed things up for them since CuJo has a no trade clause and is signed for another 4 years (or is it 3). Lots of money going into the CBA. I don't think teams will be willing to spend that.
For the Avs, I'd say look for the Bulin wall to show up in Colorado. There's lots of talk in Tampa about that and not starting Bulin for the last game against NJ is a sign that things might not be good there. I've followed the Bruins for ages and I know Grahmam (But still can't spell it). He's a #1 goalie and when Tampa picked him up, I thought Bulin will be gone (since he is VERY high priced).
