1on1 challenge !

Ok people, I keep looking at the title of this forum and I came up with this initiative. I want us to organize a series of 1on1 matches between various members of this forum. If you want to participate, all you have to do is post in this thread :) . It would be nice to have a few servers at our disposal too (the 8472 server will be available). This isn't a ladder like the matches that were organized a few weeks ago and basically anyone can challenge anyone.

Here are the basic rules (updated!) :

- Each match will occur in two halves on the maps that each player has chosen.
- The match is a best-of-two. That means that the winner is whoever has the highest number of points when the frag counts are added.
- The match will have the following standard settings unless each player agrees otherwise :

* Game mode : Deathmatch
* Weapon type : Regular Weapons
* Game speed/air control : 100%/35%
* No Redeemer
* No Powerups
* No Translocator
* TimeLimit 20
* Fraglimit 0
* WeaponStay On
* ForceRespawn Off
* No spectators unless someone has been designated as arbitrator.

- If necessary (due to uneven pings, for example) the two halves can take place on separate servers.
- No excessive camping or taunting.
- No cheating (=disqualification).
- Each player must make demo recordings of both halves and take screenshots at the end of each (these will be hosted on a website eventually).

Well, that's why there's the option of playing each half of a match on different servers. It evens out differences and each player can choose a server closer to their location.

1st off --I would like to see the First Touney finished before going to start another set of matches - This is just my opinion - but why start this only to have a cple of matches played then it never get finished?

2nd - I have become way to dependant on the TL - and playing DM without it pretty much makes me a dribling fool:eek:

So I will sit this one out

You know I have to agree with Core. The first tourney was started and never finished. What's to stop people from saying, "Oh yeah, I'll do this" and then not completing it? Although I would really like to take part in this, if we can't even finish the one we started, what makes you so sure we can finish this one?????

Hehe Fearless, that is exactly what a ladder is; anyone challenges anyone. ;) This one will be a ladder, the other one is a cup.

Flash and Core, this isn't a cup like the one already taking place. Just a bunch of 1vs1 matches for fun and having a good time. :) The other tourney has priority over this one.

Sorry to hear that :/ . I'm not responsable for the tournament and it seems to have pettered out. I just want to get a long term thing going here so everyone can get a quick match, whether they're a newcomer or someone that has been on this forum for a while. It would be an opportunity to play against people with different styles and gain experience from it. I guess we could dish out some titles for those who like that sort of thing.

As stated in the basic rules, you are free to organize a match on custom settings if your opponent agrees to them (there's nothing stopping you challenging Elipsis to a tloc 1on1 ;) ). In fact, it would interesting to see what custom settings people come up with (the ones I listed are the bog standard DM rules).

That's perfect :) . I'm not going to make demo recordings an obligation but, I for one, would like to see a DM match with tloc on :p . I'm going to get some webspace at topcities to host big files and have a look at any sites that allow you to submit demos (I'm having a look at cached.net right now).

Fearless - I can always host the demo files. I have plenty of webspace as I run the webserver from my house! :) And I won't charge a thing! ;)

I will also volunteer my UT server if/when it's needed. it's been EXTREMELY dead lately, so I don't see a problem utilizing it if someone would like to play on it. It has zero ping for insta too.

Let me know if you would like to have me host the demo files and I'll get it set up.

Sure, if it's possible for you to host the demos then that would be great (I didn't know you were running a webserver :p ). Those demos can get pretty big, about 10 MB for a clan match, but they should be a bit smaller for a 1on1.

Me wonders if maybe we just use only the tele:eek: ;) Not this time but I would be up for that --I used to be pretty good at telefragn - now I mostly just use it to get around or if I have poor weapon selection for ex: If I have only the enforcer - flack, bio , razor, or pulse - I will tend to favor the TL -- but if I am getting ridled with mini pellets then I will use the pulse. But for 1v1 I will use whatever to frag ur ars;) :up:

So how is tie breaker decided -- Is this a third map or do just the players decide when it comes to that?

I would suggest deciding this before entering the match to help combat any situation that may arise.

Oh and I did a search for Aggy's Compo board and its been removed so I pm'd her. If I recall its just a board with all the peeps names on a left hand column then all the peeps names across the top like this

so when a played b the results would be put into that box and so on. And the players would track their history accross the board and could see who they beat or who beat them ---maybe this be easier then the PG method. Aggy put that out there and we decided to go with the simple method - but this method should allow newcomers into the system by just adding them to the bottom and the next avail column to the right.

The idea is that it's a best of two (the frag count is added up clanbase style). If the scores are even (which is very rare), the match is declared nul and there is no winner.

Aggy's board sounds like a good idea to automate things. If it isn't too much trouble, it would be nice to have a board to keep track of scores and ranks.

Yep, web, FTP, mail. :) Getting ready to put things all on a nice big linux box too! :p As soon as I get home tonight, I'll create the user accounts to upload the demos. And I have plenty of space to do the hosting...nothing to worry about there. When anyone is ready to upload their demos, email or PM me and I'll send the interested party the info.

So in theory say we play your map and I win by 20-16 then we play mine and you win by 17-20 I would receicve the "w"? We wouldn't play another map to decide the winner?

Yes, that's the idea. It might seem a bit odd but it's a quick and simple way of doing things (that's how matches are carried out on clanbase). You have to be careful of what maps you choose if there is a change of servers. For example, it's a very bad idea to play with high ping on a ping-dominant map.

Elipsis, nice choice of map :D . I've already played on this map and it's so easy to get knocked off the pathways and fall to your doom. I guess the possibility of using a 3rd party map lies with the server admin.

DM is the form of UT I play the least of. I have never seen this map and If you wish to use it then we will need to use ur server. And if I recall you had horrible ping with spikes at the server I have admin to.

So - Is there somewhere I could go and play this map? Without having to put up with just picking a random pub?

I played some on Cinci Server tonight and that was just awful. LOL at the peeps spamming the spawing points and tunnel entrances.

Don't usually play 1 on 1's, mebbe had 6 in the last two years, so I could be valuable in helping ppl up the ladder :D, but for the fun of it I'm in \o/

I'm in the UK and usually conscious to play 9pm GMT onwards any day of the week.

I'm on ADSL so I mainly ping ok on US servers namely; Wu's, =UTK'S=, & Flash's.

Sorry to repeat this (I know some people can't stand repeating ... after being nagged at for years by their Mom ;) ) but please remember to make demo recordings of the matches. This is so other people can view the match. FlashAM has generously offered some web space to host demos and screenshots so web space shouldn't be a problem. Also, if you're into improving your style, watching a good demo is a good way to learn from one's mistakes :) .

P.S: I'd best stop playing UT2003 demo if I intend playing any matches as it messes UT gameplay up :p .

Very nice match :) . There were a few rebounds as each of you gained lead and then lost it.

Btw, I had a few problems getting the demo to run but got round to fixing it by replacing these files :

- epiccustommodels.u
- multimesh.u
- relics.u

If any of you are having problems viewing the demo (ut stays stuck on the connecting message), I'd be more than happy to upload the correct files somewhere.

P.S: I'll get working on some decent pages :p .

when I try to demoplay it, UT closes, and I get some error.. I saw the relics.u file in my system folder, not sure about the others.. maybe i gotta rpelace them? Any info would be cool. :cool:

If UT crashes and exits to Windows, it's probably due to the fact that some files are missing. It's a good idea to get demo manager to list these and download some of them. Here's a list :

If I click on the link, it says this page is unavailable. If I cut and paste the link, it comes up with a download box. If I choose open, it asks me what program to open it with. If I download it, it asks me what program to open it with and links me to Microsoft's page which tells me it's an Excel file. I don't have Excel.

It's indeed because it was typed as hyperlink. Geocities is a ****** and doesn't support offsite linking. This is the way to get around it.

1) I thought excel files could be saved as html, that way you can still edit it with excel unlike when you make a picture of it, and I'd guess most people wouldn't have much trouble viewing html files. :D

I pressed the "Print Scrn" key then went to "Paint" and copy pasted then saved as JPEG then uploaded and changed to .txt.

If this doesn't work then I have no idea how to make this avail---I will check my Office 97 CD to see if there is a file I can load - I believe I did a custom install so this may be the issue with the html:bulb:

Don't change to .txt, just leave it as .jpg. It'll work fine then. :)

well without hijacking this thread into being a help the puter noob out--I have never heard of boomspeed - I only just last week learned i had free webspace and I still have no idea how to get my pics on it--- I am not about to spend $ to get the upgraded stuff for my webspace seems how the only reasons I would use it is for here.

Just as an FYI with demos and such. If you play on my server, I automagically get demos "server side". So you don't need to capture one, however, you will need to let me know the date, time and map that you guys played. :)

FlashAM, I've uploaded two zip archives containing the demos that Elipsis recorded as well as all the necessary cache files to play them back. I had a little trouble connecting at first so I used active mode. I didn't have permission to access the demos folder so I simply uploaded the lot in the main folder.

As for the web pages, Farquit has that pretty much covered. There's no way I could have produced something similar to what he did :p .

Actually, I'm Atlantic Standard Time. I could easily play earlier, perhaps 8:00 AST. I think I'm GMT -4. That would make it 12:00 GMT.

Hell, I don't know what the time relationship is because I'm actually on daylight savings time or something like that. Our time goes ahead in spring.

HEHE I am a complete noob at all this puter crap --Don't get me wrong I do ok with it--I even set up new puters on the network at work before. BUT lol I have no clue about ftp's and such.

Well, I'll try to make it tomorrow myself. I tried to do a routine upgrade on my computer...and well, wound up with everything not working. :( So I'm stuck trying to get things working with a reformat. I hope to be up tomorrow, but I can't promise. Wish me luck.

Well Thanks guys--But something that i have been pondering had become very effident tonight. Quest --Our match was only a feather ontop of a Mound of Crap. I just don't have the DM mentality or really the NW mentality when it comes down to it. I will only use certain weapons cause I feal the others - well for lack of better words --CRAP. I just don't have that win at all costs mentallity -- Like I said Questor --This isn't because/or towards you in any way what-so-ever!!! you play a fair and logical game. :D:

I will typically only use such weapons when I am being attacked by them repeatidly-------ANYWAY---NW just lost another peep.

I think I will stick with just the sniper and insta from now on. No more getting flacked or whatever. I used to think that insta was boring -- I now have come to understand why some have decided to play only insta.

Well geez. It's just a silly game. I'm not sure whether I've been insulted or praised or who knows what.

I'm guessing that me switching to rockets or flak is not something that you see as sportsmanlike. Sorry if that's the case. I just play how I play.

I've been at this game since Nov 99 and have only ever played normal weaps deathmatch. I've done a bit of instagib here and there but, IMHO, it get's boring fairly quickly. I like the ability to change to suit the situation or the player.

You are a good player and have no reason to stop playing because you lost one match. I'm not a noob and some even think I can hold my own in a match or two.

I suck with shock and my connection spikes too much to use sniper effectively. I didn't want to use just mini cuz that irritates some peeps.

I just don't know what to say.

Different maps require different strats and weapons. If somone is hoeing a specific weapon I tend to just take there ammo away \o/ No ammo= No ho \o/

If they are bagging you around every corner with the " face flack " make a mental note and don't just cruize around every corner stutter/pause and break up your routine

Just to clear up some things;)

1. SirQuestor -- NO NO NO -- you played a very good game:up:
2. I have only come to the conclusion that my game style and my short comings are better suited for Sniper or Insta matches.
3. I should stop coming here after I've been drinking - cause I either say it wrong or shouldnt have said it at all :eek:
4. I always enjoy a good fought game wether I am the victor or not - I really enjoy a good game. LAst night was just clouded by some experiences I had before coming to play on Nali - and our Match SirQuestor-- I should have just asked for a reschedule - Not that the outcome would have been any different other then me having a better attitude about it;) :up:
5. My attitude lately is pretty much in the dumps---I think a good break from UT or mabye just a switch in game modes will help.

Good Games - and It's not that I lost ---NOT that at all --hell I lose most CTF maps I play and nearly all DM maps. I am mediocre CTF peep and basically a noob at DM. So losing last night was not the issue and never has been;)

Bear with me here :confused: sooo, if I didn't record my demo's in 3rd person spectate, others would not be able to switch between players when viewing said demo, only me who recorded it?

Heh :D . You can record the demo however you want (first person would be a logical choice ;) ). It won't stop people from viewing the demo in first or third person. There are a few details to take into account though :

- A client side demo will only record what a player is seeing. That means that other players will suddenly dissappear as they come fall out of view and reappear again as soon as you have a line-of-sight. This problem doesn't occur with server-side demos.

- You won't be able to observe what another player is seeing in first person view (start demo in third person, flick to player and behindview 0) unless you have demo manager 3. With the old demo driver, the player perspective of other players stays stuck in the same direction thoughout the match.

hehe, Yah I don't meen noob as in new to the game -- Just I have only just started playing DM. I come from AS and DOM then got into CTF with -BBH- I just now(last month or so) have started to play DM for more then just something to do. I am starting to get the hang of it -- My fighting and aim is pretty good -- It's the DM tactics and Strategy that I lack. And to just go and play on a DM server with out spamming doors/Hallways and out right spawn camping- You're not going to win a whole lot of games. I have found some servers where this isn't done or allowed ---Don't get me wrong -- But the majority of DM peeps I've come across will do anything to get a frag -- and I just havent come to that and probably won't ever come to that sytle of play.

Then there is the UTK server -- hehe That takes some time to get used to -- Like SirQuestor said in our match "I won't shoot you if you don't have a weapon" --hehe You won't here that anywhere else :)

So no -- I'm not a noob as far as fraggin ability goes -- But for overall DM ability I would say I have some work cut out for me;) :up:

Actually I have done that -- There are some really skilled folks out there :up: My prob is that I don't know the maps and I have just haven't taken the time to learn em.

I play at the LoC RA server and they have the Pulse and Mini removed from the list of available weapons. I have probably only played a total of 20 maps and I really like it -- but just havent had the time to learn maps -- not to mention that not a whole lot of peeps play on the servers that I ping well to.

Thanks for the Heads-up---I do indeed like RA and Maybe I put alittle more effort into that.

Yeah, 3 am is pushing it honestly (especially since I might getting a job soon). I don't have night school tomorrow so that sounds about right. That would be 10:30 pm@GMT+1. Is a server available and would it be possible to have DM-Closer on ? If it's Wu's server, I think that DM-Closer is already on it.

Note to all : I have uploaded an archive that should fix some of the demo play back problems people are experiencing. For the moment, it's on FlashAM's FTP server under the name of demoplaybackfix.zip.
