1. INSTALLATION
1.1 - "Wrong Volume in drive"
First, disable any virus scanning software you may be running, especially Norton. These programs tend to be overprotective and can prevent legitimate software from installing correctly in an effort to protect your system.
If that is not the case, copy all 4 CD's to one folder on the hard drive, then run the setup.exe program from the created folder. After install just delete that folder and use the Play disc to play the game.
Another method that works if you are low on HD space but have 2 CDROM drives that can read CD's, is to put CD1 in one drive and CD2 in the other. When it asks for CD2, leave CD1 alone and Browse to CD2. Then for 3 and 4, just use the drive that CD2 was in, and leave CD1 in the first drive throughout the entire install. This will prevent it from saying the wrong volume is in the drive during the installation.
You may have to manually run DirectX9.0 setup as well. It doesn't always run when installing from copied files on the hard drive.
1.2 - "Error 0x800xxxxx"
http://support.installshield.com/kb/view.asp?articleid=q104985
1.3 - "Out of disk space"
Make sure you have at least 4GB free on your C: drive (or the drive Windows is installed on).
Optionally, you may be able to get around this by changing your %TEMP% and %TMP% environment variables to point to a drive that has at least 4GB free.
1.4 - "Please insert Disk x with Datax.cab"
This is just an odd disk read error. The installer is not able to find a data file it is looking for and assumes it is on another CD. Here are some steps you can take to fix it:
- Clean the CD, inspect for scratches, use a laser lens cleaner on the drive.
- Try installing from another drive.
- Clear the contents of the temp folder (c:\windows\temp on w9x, c:\documents and settings\(username)\local settings\temp on w2k/xp)
- Disable all background applications, taskbar icons, antivirus programs, etc.
- Copy the entire CD to the hard drive, then install from there. If there is more than one CD and it won't let you browse to the next disc when it gets to that part, copy all the CD's to the same folder (overwriting as necessary) and install.
- If fails to install from hard drive, try booting into Safe Mode and installing from the hard drive then.
- If fails to even copy to hard drive, test CD on another machine or seek a replacement disk from your retailer.
2. LAUNCH
2.1 - "Full Screen Mode Not Available"
This error typically occurs when the requirements for the game are not met by the system, specifically the video card.
You need to be using a GeForce Series video card, or a RADEON Series 8500 or greater video card to play the game. If a card of this type is not installed, the game will malfunction. Consider upgrading to a device that meets the requirements.
2.2 - Blackscreen/Lockup on launch with patch installed
This is the same issue as 2.1. Double check your video card to make sure it is a GEFORCE or RADEON 8500+.
2.3 - Returns to desktop with no errors, process is still in memory.
Turn off any background applications, taskbar icons, and antivirus programs.
If you have two CD/DVD/CD-RW drives, try both to see if the other will allow the game to install properly.
Make sure the CD is clean of damage or debris, and that the reflective surface is not watermarked (distorted).
Make sure that a backup of the CD is not being used.
2.4 - "Device Not Created 2"
Disable all background programs, especially refresh rate locking programs or video card utilities.
Revert your video card driver to a previous revision, such as the 43.45 Detonator driver from http://www.nvidia.com/ for GeForce Cards.
Set the refresh rate for the computer to 60hz and try again.
3. VIDEO
3.1 - Square Wheels/Objects in Game
In the game options, Toggle "Force Object LOD"
3.2 - When using Focus graphics are corrupt, flashing, or slow.
- Go into the Enter the Matrix installation folder and look for a file called "MatrixConfig".
- Alternately, you can try using your Start Menu's "Search files and folders" feature.
- In the Search, simply type "MatrixConfig" into the search field.
- When the search is complete, a single file should be listed. Double click on it to open it with a text editor (IE Notepad, Wordpad)
- Scroll down until you find the text that says this:
;Please turn to 1 if you experience graphical corruption during Focus moves
ALTERNATEFOCUS=0
FULLSCREEN=1
WBUFFER=0
Change the value:
ALTERNATEFOCUS=0
to
ALTERNATEFOCUS=1
Make sure you save the document, exit, and retry the game.
3.3 - Textures are misaligned with RADEON 7x00 Series
RADEON 7x00 cards exhibit visual flaws with the latest Catalyst 3.2 drivers
XP v.6307 and 9x v.9088. Although this card is not supported, we recommend downloading the previous drivers for XP, 6.13.3276, and for 9x 4.13.7189 from ATI's website.
3.4 - Low Framerate
- Set your texture filter to "Bilinear".
- Turn OFF all of the following;
Force Object LOD
Allow Gamma
W-Buffer(dither)
Shadows
- Turn off Anti-Aliasing and then make sure the rest is all at its default value.

3.5 - Graphics are too dark
If you have a Dell computer that came with an ATI RADEON 9700 video card installed, you need to change your video card drivers to the latest that were released by Dell. The ATI Catalyst drivers will cause this dark graphics problem in this game when used with a video card that came installed in your computer.
If you are using the video card that came installed in your name-brand computer, but is different than the Dell computer listed above, you need to change your video card drivers to the latest that were released by the computer manufacturer.
If you are using a video card that was installed in your computer after it was purchased, you will need to update your video card drivers to the latest version that has been released by the video card manufacturer. Refer to http://www.nvidia.com/ or http://www.ati.com, as these are the two cards supported.
3.6 - Graphics are dark after Patch
-On the LAUNCHER screen for the game see if "ALLOW GAMMA" is turned on, if not then turn it ON, then set the gamma. Default looks like 100 and the max is 500 (Which is the brightest). Have them set according to their needs.
3.7 - Slowdown with multiple enemies on screen
Refer to 4.3 - Slowdown with Multiple enemies on screen
4. SOUND
4.1 - Sound stops working Mid-game
Click on the Start Menu and go to Run. Type DXDIAG and press OK. On the Sound tab of the new window that opens, there is a Hardware Acceleration slider bar. Slide this 2 notches to the Left to "Basic" (Try the "None" setting later if this doesn't work) and click Exit to quit the tool. Retry the game at that time. This acceleration level will not change the performance of the card or of your system, it only changes the method it uses to process the sound.
If that does not fix the issue, please download and install the latest sound card drivers available for your computer from your computer or hardware manufacturer, or if you know who made the hardware, you can download the drivers from the respective chipset manufacturers. These driver updates are crucial for program compatibility, and even if you think you are running the newest drivers you should check for updates as newer hardware especially is updated every few months.
Additionally, the device must be fully compatible with DirectX 9.0. If it is an older device and the above suggestions do not work, upgrading the card to a DirectX 9.0 compliant device may be necessary for proper operation of the game.
4.2 - Lockup with repeating sound
Refer to 4.1
Additionally if you have more than on sound device installed it is recommended that you disable or remove the auxiliary devices. Refer to your computer manufacturer for assistance.
4.3 - Slowdown with multiple enemies on screen
Refer to 4.1
4.4 - Sound is garbled or sounds like static.
Refer to 4.1
4.5 - Can't enable EAX on my Audigy
Download and install the patch from http://www.atarisupport.com/
Additionally update to the newest driver for your card from http://www.soundblaster.com/ or their respective chipset manufacturer's website.
5. CONTROLS
5.1 - Character moves on their own or not at all.
Unplug or disconnect any and all Joysticks, Gamepads, or Steering Wheels attached to the computer and make sure they are disabled in the control panel. Once removed, try the game again.
5.2 - Zoom In/Out not working properly.
Refer to 5.1
Additionally make sure you are using the 3 and 4 keys above the "E" and "R" keys on the keyboard, and not the ones on the numpad.
5.3 - Can't throw grenades.
You have to hold the button down for a moment to allow for pin pull and cock and throw
Also, make sure you have not changed the configuration of the keys. Grenades use the button bound to the alternate fire.
5.4 - Can't reassign keys in config
You need to select the slot you want to alter and then press ENTER before pressing the key you want to change it to.
5.5 - Joystick/Gamepad setup.
If the controller is the only one in the Game Controllers control panel, and tests fine there, and does not have any "profiling" software running, then the directional axis of the controller will automatically be set to move the character around. You can not change this.
Once you have confirmed that you can move the character, go into Options from the main menu, then go into Controls. Pick one of the categories (driving, fighting, etc.). Highlight one of the functions listed (punch, kick, shoot, etc.) and press Enter, then press one of the buttons on the controller to assign that button to the selected function. Now when you play the game, pressing that button should perform the function desired.
Keep in mind joysticks are not officially supported and may not operate as intended.
6. HACKING
6.1 - Can't Play FMV or IMG files
1. Type the command in normally, but DO NOT press enter.
2. Use your cursor to highlight the enter key on the onscreen keyboard.
3. Press the enter key on your KEYPAD.
If this still doesn't get the FMVs to play, try this variation:
1. Type the command in normally, but DO NOT press enter.
2. Use your cursor to highlight the enter key on the onscreen keyboard.
3. Press the CTRL key on your keyboard
NOTE: that the final step is the CTRL key instead of the ENTER key on KEYPAD
6.2 - How do I play Neo, Trinity, or Morpheus?
You can't.
6.3 - Multiplayer hack on PC
This hack only works on the console versions of the game.
