Getting kicked out to the desktop under certain circumstances (or even completely at random) seems to happen to some people with certain graphics card drivers; some cards are more prone to it than others (the ATI Rage series for example). It happened to me once in a while, but only when I was loading a saved game. Because it didn't happen every time I was OK. I have an ATI Radeon DDR.

All you can do is to try different drivers, starting with the latest, then trying to get hold of earlier ones. Unfortunately there's no guarantee that you'll be able to get a bug-free version for your particular combination of card and OS. For what it's worth, the problem appears to lie in the OpenGL file of the driver suite; some manufacturers seem to have been a bit sloppy when it comes to writing their drivers.
