Can someone just refresh me on this???
Is there any need for a large shield generator on a damper field equipped ship or will a small one do as good a job???
Thanks

Basically a small will do just fine. Any level of attack that will actually bring down even a Small Damper Field is virtually guaranteed to have destroyed the ship already anyway.

thanks man, that's how I thought it was.
Now back to design those ships :)

Beamup,
I dont understand your answer. don't the shields block all damage up to a certain(SP?) level ???

They do, stopping power is independent of how big a generator you plop on, but how fast the shield pool rechares AND how big that pool is does change with generator size.

No. The three important characteristics of a shield are stopping power, shield points, and recharge rate. Recharge rate is just how fast shield points come back. The way it works is that, when a shot hits a shield:
- The shield absorbs a fraction of the damage equal to its stopping power.
- This amount of damage is subtracted from the shield points.
- The remaining damage, plus anything from the prior step beyond how many shield points were left, goes on to the armor.
Some damage always gets past the shield unless you have a modded shield with stopping power of 1. The other way to get damage past the shield is to run it out of shield points - after which the shield does nothing. But, Damper Fields recharge so fast you can't run them out of shield points (pretty much) so you just have to live with the 1/4 of the damage that gets past (stopping power of .75).

Thanks Beamup,
I wasn't taking stopping power into account (just looking at shield strength and recharge rate).
