Can't play my old mechwarrior 3 in XP?

I'm feeling nostalgic right now and I wanted to play mechwarrior 3. After installing the game and launching it, I get an error message that the game has a known comapitibility issue with Microsoft XP. I tried to install the most updated patch in the support webpage which is version 1.2 but the game will still not start. Can anybody shed some light on this matter?

Try using compatibility mode. Right click on the program icon, select properties, go to the compatibility tab, and then set the game to run in Windows 98 compatibility mode.
