Summary: when you have an alliance with another race you can offer ridiculous exchanges through the diplomacy screen and the AI will accept it.
Example: I was playing Psilon and allied with the Nommo. I was well behind in technology and wanted to trade for some of the Nommo's good stuff - unfortunately I didn't have any tech that the Nommo didn't already possess. So I offered to exchange one of my border planets for three of the Nommo's best techs: it agreed to my offer.
That was easy I said to myself, so I next decided to offer another of my border planets in exchange for one of his planets and two of his best technologies: it agreed.
Something is not right I said to myself, so I looked over all the planets I had and found the worst one, then I looked over all the planets the Nommo had and found the best one. I offered to exchange my size 4 Red2 average planet with 1038 population for Nommo's Yellow1 very rich size 12 planet with 65,000 population and I also asked for two more of its best tech: yes, it agreed to the exchange!!

Keep in mind planets that are Red2 to you may well be Sweet Spot to them. Also keep in mind that most people report exactly the opposite behavior - the typical complaint is that a long-term ally with CB/CR at 200 won't take 5 great planets (for them) and 10 level 50 techs for Very Light Armor.

The AIs don't value their planets highly enough - definitely nowhere nearly as highly as they value their techs! I once traded about 4 techs to an Imsaies empire for two of their highly developed, population 40000+ planets. I was about 4 tech levels above them (this was pre code-patch). Their empire was close to a senate victory win, but after I traded for those two planets, I ended up winning via the senate instead :).

I guess the AI players would also turn senate victory off if they had the chance.

Or at least they wouldn't make bonehead trades if they realized it would result in their defeat.:weird:

If you haven't tried this 'feature' you should.
Start in the senate.
Build a colony ship or two and start some new worlds.
Quickly make alliances with as many as you can. Should take about 30 turns or so and you should be allied with a couple of races.
Trade your 1 of your newly founded worlds for three of your allies. If one of those is particularly poor trade it for three more planets from the same or another allie.
Keep doing this until you own all the good planets.
Have fun!

What race should I be? Playing as the Ithkul (even if you could put yourself in the Senate) this is unlikely to happen.

Ithkul, of course, is the one race where you'll probably not make any alliances. Everyone hates you from the start and it just gets worse from there!
