I have a major problem with high pings when I play on-line. I have been averaging around 200 to 280 ping times! Sometimes it would go over 500 and really screw up stuff! I then went to my broadband provider, (roadrunner) and requested the most up to date cable modem available. Now, I am getting a ping time ranging from 140 to 220, with the pings dropping below 100 every so often. Anyone know of any other solutions? Would a different nic do the trick? I am using a 3comm now, should I try a Kingston or Netgear? Should I be drastic and try DSL?!? Any good and helpful information would be much appreciated!! Thanks!

Well it depends where you live and where the servers you play on are too. I don't think a 140ping is to bad but I know what ya mean. Run some 'Traceroutes' to some of your favorite servers at about the times you like to play.
Did you try changing your 'Receive Window' and other sh!t like that?

Thats true Heartlesz,..I do live in Texas, USA and the server I love is in the Nederlands or Germany or something. Of course the one sniper server I love is way around the world! I will try the traceroute though and see. As for changing the "receive window", I have not. I have just been looking at hardware for the time being. I will screw with the unreal settings and look for what u r talkin about too. Thanks for your input!

I often play on overseas servers. There is no way you're going to push that ping under 140. Consider that local players already get between 30 and 60 so it's no wonder your ping is so high. 280 to 500 does seem excessive though. Are you experiencing wavy ping during matches ?

Fearless, you rock! You are just helping me in all kinds of ways today. I do experience wavy pings during gameplay. I have been keeping track lately and since I got the new cable modem, I connect at about 120 and it can dip to 90 or so and then spike up to around 225 at the most so far. My red connection light usually comes on everytime I play, but, I have not lost a connection in quite some time. (Thank Goodness) I also have asked around and noticed that players closer to the server are getting way lower pings and higher kills. I still kill about 30 to 50 each game with my high only sitting at 93,..but I want to kill 100+!! Anyway, thanks again fearless,..you are a great asset to the forum! =)

yeah ive heard lots of bad things coming from roadrunner's services, i have adelphia and i usually average 75, sometimes 50-60 depending on where the server is, but yeah, i still see lots of 100+ servers so i dunno
i would recommend using tweaking settings for the modem (dont uncap it, that gets lots of people locked up)
but the last time i loaded my registry with "tweaks".. it dropped the download by 100 kb/sec.. and considering i get about 320, thats a huge difference
btw, receive window has nothing to do with UT =P

Thanks for all the great input people! I would have to agree with "If you see Kay", in that it seems like RR does suck when it comes to online gaming. Some people in the game have said to kill the RR and go with a DSL connection. They said that DSL may be slower on downloads (like movies, music, etc.) but that the ping times in UT or whatever would be alot better,...I dont know if that is true or not though. Our local broadband providers want ridiculous prices per month, so for now, Im gonna stick with RR or go with SBC DSL or something,..I just dont know. If I could get ping times like Yewnuhtee, in the 50-75 range, I would be in heaven! I guess for now, I will look into the tweeks suggested by yew and see what happens! Thanks to you all for your in-sight!;)
