Hello,
Tried to install my old Risk CD on my spiffy new Windows 2000 machine. No go. Install program bombs out with a warning that it requires Windows 95 to install.
A friend who bought his CD at the same time as I did some years ago had no problem installing his on his machine. Any ideas, patches, or workarounds?

win 2k huh? if you have service pack two or three, then do this (if not go get one, www.windowsupdate.com).
Click Start, Run and type:
REGSVR32 C:\WINNT\APPPATCH\SLAYERUI.DLL
and hit Enter. If it says "succesfull" then right click on the setup.exe file on the CD and click properties. Click the compatibilty tab at the top and then select Run in Windows 95 Comaptibilty Mode. Click Ok.
Double click Setup.exe to install the game.
Should take about 3 minutes to do this, assuming you already have the service pack...

Zalgaddas,
Thanks. Closer. But no cigar.
After installing the compatibility mode, like you described, you actiually have to make a shortcut in order to set compatibility mode for the app. This let the install program run and let me get through one screen of selecting which components of the game I want to install.
Then it brings up the old familiar screen showing each file in the build being copied with the hard drive with the three status bars on the left for file percentage, build percentage, and hard drive space free.
It bombs out trying to copy the first file called RISK.EXE. The actual error message is: "General error whilst copying files. Please check your target location and try again. Error Number:-1 Related File risk.EXE"
Any other ideas?

Hmm... Are you able to copy the disc to the hard drive... not install it... but just copy it? That could tell you if there is a problem with the disc itself or not, if it can't just copy the disc i'd take it back to the store and get another disc.
Do you also have admin rights on the account your signed in with?
Hmm... Think think think....
Oh yea, if you're able to copy the disc to the hard drive...you might try installing from your hard drive to your hard drive. Could just be a transfer error, problem with the ide bus or who knows. If that does work, you might want to update your IDE controller driver.

Yep,
THe first thing I tried when I got that error message was to copy the file to my hard drive. No problem. So then I copied the whole disk to my hard drive and tried ot install from there as you suggested. After making th shortcut and setting the compatibility mode to Windows 95, setup bombs out with the following error message.
Setup Initialization Error
Setup requires _SETUP.DLL and _ISRES.DLL (located in _SETUP.LIB) in order to operate properly. Please ensure these files are located with SETUP.EXE.
All three files referenced _SETUP.DLL, _ISRES.DLL, and _SETUP.LIB are in the root directory that I copied the CD to. So this isn't working either.
Yes, I am the administrator on this machine. Any other ideas?

Remove all temporary files from "c:\windows\temp" and/or "c:\temp" and you may even go into Star, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, DISK CLEAN UP. Check all the boes in here and then clic ok and have it whipe everything outa there.
The try installing again... ?
[Edit] In your version of windows it may be under C:\winnt

Thanks, I'll give that a try. But what is that supposed to do?

When install shield runs it creates temp files in those folders for the installation. Essentially it has to unpack files somewhere while the install shield wizard runs. SO it stick it's file there and then unpacks the game from the cd. But if there is a problem with the files in the temp directory (like they are corrupted or there are different versions of those files) then it may thorw up an error like this. I know how it sounds when someone suggeests you delete files in your Windows folder, very sketchy, so if you want to do some research yourself, goto consumer.installshield.com or you can look up what the winnt/temp folder is for on www.microsoft.com/technet. (there is no www. in front of consumer.installshield).

Thanks.
Tried deleting all of those files. No effect. The same error message was given as in the previous message.

Hmm, ok try this.
Goto consumer.installshield.com and goto the Frequently Asked Questions section at the top.
Scroll to the bottom and click on How to update the installshield engine.
Or just click here: http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108322
And then here: http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108497
This website is probably going to be your best bet at finding a solution....
I wouldn't expect an answer from Atari through this forum, its primarly just a froum for end users like You and I to help other end users. Occationally a Moderator will reply... on occation...

Well, nothing there seemed to help.
I got the official reply back from Atari saying it was not compatible, however it might run...and then some of the things that have been mentioned here.
Oh well, time to go copy my friend's disc! :)

Question... why would coping your friends disc make it work any better... (unless the disc is bad) ???
Its going to to do the same thing as installshield is not part of the game but part of your computer...
If it does work I would be interested to know though. :bulb:

The reason his will work is that although these were purchased from the same store and the same time, they were evidently NOT from the same software build.
Although both list the same Hasbro Product number, and have packaging that obstensibly looks the same, mine has a copyright date on the CD case of 1996. His 1997.
He has had no problem installing his CD to Windows 2000 without any compatibility modes set.

Hmm... interesting....
That may just mean that his version was a second run of the product becasue they already sold so many the first time around...
They had a second batch made.... I mean... they have a gold and version of it now so it obvously sells well...
I wonder if there is a version number for the software itself you can look at...
Good luck.
