I generally design several different ship size system ships so that in theory the ROY could pick one that fits the industry output of that planet, and therefore I won't have to worry about micromanaging anti-piracy operations.

That isn't what happens though. If as I normally do I have an FR, LC, and BS hull for sys ships, the ROY will only build the BS hull. If it can't build that yet, it will build module to increase the hull type that planet can build. ARGH! This means piracy problems will go through the roof as the ROY is taking the 50 turns it needs to build that BS ship when it could have an FR in 5.

This is the opposite problem of starships of course, where the ROY pays far too much attention to industry cost and therefore busily builds smaller ships up the wazoo if you let it. Anyone else notice this problem???

Actually, no. But then I always queue up three system ships at the start of a new colony (I use corvettes, but frigates should also work). Many turns later I'll look at the system defense fleet and find that there are 6-8 corvettes, and 2-5 destroyers in medium industry systems, or 5-6 cruiser/BC and just the 3 corvettes in 1 planet systems with high industry output.

Of course, frontier worlds are different, as system defense fleets (seem to) get an even higher priority from 'Roy.
