hi all,
this is becoming a pain especially whilst playing online,the lights turn to large blocks rather than lights and nothing on my hud displays in any readable form whatsoever,it only does it on my radeon card.tried to tweak countless options in preferences but with no joy whatsoever,any ideas would be greatly appreciated :)
cheers avbuff...(SPUNKYMONKEY in ut)

open gl or d3d?
you could try turning coronas off but i duntink it will help with the hud
maybe try a different gfx driver

have you ran all the direct 3d test?
start>run>dxdiag
If you bought the card from a major chain store take it back and get a new 1

I'm having this same problem. I made the "blocky artifacts on screen" topic...still haven't figured it out. It seems we are the only two people who experience this :( Because everyone I ask with the same card and WinXP has never seen it.

If I turned AA/AF on I get these blocks on lights too (Coronas).
Does not matter if I play 1 player or multiplayer, still there, tried Catalyst 3.2 up to 3.8 but problem still there. Tried 2x-4-x-6x AA etc. same crap. Same with OpenGL and Direct3D. Also get big FPS drop, nearly unplayable. The problem only dissappear if I turn AA/AF totally off.

But why?UT rendering problem or ATI/Catalyst problem?Anyone?

Or is it something I (we) can do in the advanced settings to fix this? (Tried some things, but with no luck..)

I would be GREATFUL for help!!

TechSpecs:
UT GOTY 4.36 (Also tried 4.51 with same problem)
DirectX 9.0b
Catalyst 3.8 (With Controlpanel)
Windows XP Pro (Updated to this day)
Intel Inf 5.02
Asus P4C800 Deluxe (Newest bios to this day)
Kingston HyperX 1Gb (434Mhz)
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb (BBA)

Yeah, I can turn off AA or Coronas, but loss of quality is a bit boring though..but if thats the only way, ill go for it..

Unless anyone have an idea? Info on new UT patches etc?

9600 pro
avg 150 fps and peaks around 400
what are you doing wrong?
this (http://www.tweaktown.com/ttg/ttgdocument.php?dType=guide&dId=20&dPage=2) page might help
make sure you have all updates,you can dable with bios but i wouldnt reccomend it without understanding it first

Thanx for trying help, but this is about UT1 NOT UT2003.........
I still havent solved the problem...I guess UT1 its not AA compatible...

UT1 is very AA friendly. I have mine set for maximum everything @ 1280x1024 and highres textures and still get 90-150fps and no visual annomalies with the cat 3.8 drivers and everything under 3D turned to MAX.

This is with my ATI 9700Pro All-In-Wonder, AMD 2800+, 512MB PC2700.

You may just want to turn off Coronas. Make it Coronas=False and see how that works for you.

Well... I turned off the coronas, but artifacts is still there ( but less). They ONLY go totally away if I turn off AA/AF.
Very strange..a have no problems like this in other games.
I have the GOTY edition of UT1, maybe its something wrong with it? I realy don't understand this one..frustrating.

A friend of mine has 9700 Pro, the same GOTY edition, and same problem using AA/AF. It doesn't seem to be a hardware problem though...but something isn't right. But what!?

i have an ati 9200 128meg crad and it did the same thing as well
but i fixed that by playing in opengl and you need to get the updated opengl.dll driver worked for me

Ive trying everything now, and finally figured out it is the AF (Anisotropic filtering) that is the problem. I can use as much as AA (Antilising Filtering) I want with no graphic bug. But as soon as I turn on the AF the graphics get messed up. Blocks on coronas etc. as described before.

Its ok for me to use only AA, much better than no filtering at all, but I wonder why the AF doesn't work.
Is it ATI drivers problem, or the UT rendering/driver problem?Guess thats the final question.
Hopefully it will be fixed sometime...

And hopefully this can help others who suffer this ATI/UT AA/AF bug.....

if youre using catalyst 3.8 drivers revert back to 3.7 as the 3.8s are known cause overheating problems on cartain makes of radeon cards particularly 9500 upto 9800 pro something to do with the inclusion of 9800 xt drivers

No-no-no!!The overheating issue is fake!!Make a research and se yourself. If you red above you could see ive tried older catalyst drivers with same problem......

ati reported only 1 monitor has blown up,and it wasnt the 3.8s fault
just somebody prolly cranked his res too high for the monitor to handle

im using cats 37 on 9800 pro and have no probs running ut1 at all are u running the game in 32 bit mode as this can cause glitches in the game also try the updated open gl driver also i am using the s3tc textures as they look great

ps perhaps the overheating problem was bull but then again would u risk it after paying out for a top end card

Duggie

open up unrealtournament.ini in your system folder and replace the opngl section with this

[OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice]
Translucency=True
VolumetricLighting=True
ShinySurfaces=True
Coronas=True
HighDetailActors=True
DetailTextures=True
UseS3TC=True
UseTNT=False
MinDepthBits=16
MaxLogUOverV=8
MaxLogVOverU=8
UseMultiTexture=True
UsePalette=True
ShareLists=False
AlwaysMipmap=False
DoPrecache=0
UseTrilinear=True
MaxAnisotropy=0
SupportsLazyTextures=0
GammaOffset=0.000000
LODBias=0.000000
MaxTMUnits=0
RefreshRate=0
DisableSpecialDT=False
UseFilterSGIS=False
UseVertexSpecular=True
UsePrecache=False
DescFlags=0

your system is very similar 2 mine so it should work ok

Just ran ut in direct 3d mode and experinced artifacts around some of the lights perhaps the direct 3d drivers are outdated running in open gl causes no problems whatsoever with the newer opengl.dll i suggest changing the driver to opengl in the preferences and update your opengl.dll

Duggie
10-29-2003, 04:24 PM
you can get it here

http://cwdohnal.home.mindspring.com/utglr/

just extract it to your ut system folder and overwrite the older one

I've tried the updated opengl. Using AA/AF (AF is the problem), problem still there.As you can see above, it will only go away if I turn off AF and only use AA or no filtering at all.
Can you run with both AA and AF using new opengl with no artifacts?

The overheatproblem IS fake, have been using 3.8 since the release, no problems at all. And tons of others have no problems either.

Top end card.Well, i think its crap, not worth the money at all.
I dont care if its burns up :down:

I am currently running ut at 1024 768 6x AF 16x AA no probs at all

under open gl the only thing i noticed under direct x was some of the lights were x shaped around the coronas
