when playing as carnby, i open the desk drawer in 'ALANS OFFICE' using the small key. It shows the picture of the drawer being open with some items inside, after this the game crashes straight to the desktop! no error codes....no explainations...nothing. Im running windows 2000, voodoo3 3dfx with directx 9.0a. this happens every time i play. im pretty sure i need those items so until then im stuck in this game!! any ideas???

Yes, unfortunately this is something that happens with some graphics card drivers with some operating systems, apparently because the drivers are not bug-free – particularly with the OpenGL routines which are heavily used in this game.
Most people are able to sort if out by trying out different drivers – both earlier and newer ones – for their card until they get it to work, but not always.
You can either use a cheat code to gain all objects (the 'Wizardmaster' cheat in the case of the PC) or you can load a saved game made after the contents of the drawer have been taken.
It is exactly with this sort of problem in mind that I made an archive of saved games, which can be downloaded from the UK Alone in the Dark forum at:
http://www.infogrames.co.uk//third_party/forum/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=3
Read the details on the 'Saved Games Archive' thread to see how to use the game saves, and to find which one to use.
Because the gameplay is not completely linear you may either find that you need to do some parts again, or on the other hand you may have an extra item or two that you didn't have before, but on the whole it's better than being stuck altogether.
But the best is of course to see if you can find a bug-free driver first.

i had a feeling opengl was to blame, damn me for getting a 3dfx just before they went out. i checked out somethings last night before i read your post and notcied that people were having similar problems with some opengl games like alice. i figure there has to be some patch for the drivers somewhere.........ill be looking, thanks again!
