Glad you asked.
go to www.betatests.net and register. Then you can apply for any beta test that Atari is running. We have many coming so register now.
Also stay tuned here, and you will start to see many threads talking about the joy's and trials of being a betatester.
Our goal here is to provide the ultimate Beta test community on the net, so let us know how we can do that via this forum.
Thanks

how many people are currently involved with atari's beta testing program??
BetaTestAdmin

There are currently thousands of active betatesters (mostly for Horizons), and many thousands more have registered accounts at betatests.net.

This might seem like a stupid question for you, but what exactly is a Beta test? I've heard of the term before, but I never knew what the definition was.

in short a beta test is when a game/mod/map needs to be tested before it is released for bugs problems and other things that may need tweaking/changing before its released. the more beta testers u have to beta test games/mods/maps the more bugs you will find which is good for what your testing as it will get fixed - than have them release mods/games/maps without beta testing will have alot of negative feedback people saying (why hasn't this been tested)
So in other words its to test things thoroughly before it is released to the public. But there is always specific guidelines for each thing ur testing andhow to provide your feedback.
Hope that sort of explains it for you :)

Thank you. That was a beautiful explanation. I don't think that I would be a good Beta tester though since my computer is so slow. I don't know what is wrong with it. It's over five years old so I guess that I just need a new computer...

What about Driver 3?...
BetaTestAdmin
09-05-2003, 06:01 PM
Currently only our online PC games are being tested, but we will probbaly have online console testing in the future. Non-online games are all tested by our in-house testers, so no Budokai 2 or Driver 3 as far as I know. Sorry.

What games should we come to expect in the near future arriving at betatests.net? Also, will we be notified via Mail when a new beta test opens, or will the applications we've turned in already just be continually considered for each beta?

Hello,
I have recently recieved my Horizon's Beta Test Acceptance letter informing me of my current information, CD Key info and some very Vauge instructions as to how to begin my Beta Test Experience.
I am wondering if there is a way to download the game, or if I am waiting for a Beta CD. If I am waiting for a CD, will there be an e-mail sent to me informing me of its delievery, or will it just randomly show up?
If I can download it, where can I download it from?
Thank you for any help in advanced.

While there is an FTP site to download the file, I'm not certain if it's to be made available to everyone who got an acceptance mail but no CD, or just a few.

Thank you for your swift reply.
I guess I am just going to have to wait and see what an administrator has to say about it.
Well . . . Is there a way for me to request the FTP information from the Horizons staff?
Thanks again for any reply.

Actually, yes. I pulled this right off of the members section of the Horizons section at betatests.net.
The Horizons CD image can be found at the FTP site. Please e-mail betatestadmin@atari.com if you do not have the login info.
So my guess would be this is your best bet. Good luck, and I hope it doesn't download corrupt like it did for me 6 times. ;) 7th time's the charm.

Your chances of getting into Beta III are 1 in 22.5 (According to Tazoon.com)
You probably will not recieve a reply until they start trying to overload the servers.

I downloaded and installed Horizons just fine.
When I run the shortcut it placed on the desktop, it takes me to the Istaria website login (I assume this is supposed to happen). I don't have an account there, so I go to register and I get an unhandled exception in ASP.NET from their site. Am I missing something blatently obvious, here? Or is this a problem I'll just have to wait out?

My status for participation in the Horizons Beta testing has been at pending for 4 months now...is this normal, or have I somehow been caught in some horrendous vortex of inevitable pending?
I got my application acceptance email from Atari on may 19, 2003 and ever since I've been in pending status. :(

Hey, I've already been added to the tester list and all that but I have a question. I have applied to the PC tests and assume that they will be avalibe for download uppon acceptance. But what about the PS2 games? will you be mailing me a copy? or do I need to be within a certain area to pick it up?
I know the logical answere would be mailing it to me but in the past I've been unable to participate due to living in Canada or because it was required to pick up the CD from a given location.

is anyone else downloading or in the past download Horizons extremly slow... mines downloading at approx 6.8 KB/sec and its saying 30 hours!?! I mean if I could atleast get double that speed i would be happy is there any way to improve the speed?
Try a traceroute...if your connection is normal it just means the ftp server is occupied enough so that you can't ge t more speed. If not there could be a problem with your routing and the only way to bypass it is using an open socks proxy.

Do you have any intention of using the "rewards" program stated, where experienced and helpful testers get priority over new testers? From what I have seen, it seems to be completly random. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Either check your account profile for the game in question or email them at betatestadmin@atari.com to check if your CD key is correct.

We do not have a set schedule on what and when our next betatests will start. However as soon as a game is announced to the public, we try to get some news up on the site about a potential beta. We encourage everyone to check back betatests.net monthly for new mail.

You can also log into www.betatests.net and look at your profile. Your CD-key for the game is listed there and should be correct. We had a few people get chopped CD-key numbers this week.

The Horizons Beta is random currently. We are pulling people from the system that meet our needs (video card type, connection speed etc...) However the rewards system is working and if you are in a BETA and submit a bug and it gets into the bug database you get points.
We are working out what the rewards will be and we will most likely see the first batch go out when Horizons ships.

We never decline anyone (unless you break the NDA then you are rejected from the BETA).
However to answer your question directly, the BETA acceptance phase varies. We have been accepting people for Horizons for months since it is such a large game. Other games like Unreal 2 have only been accepting for a few weeks and will stop soon.
We try to get fresh blood into all our BETA tests, so if you apply to multiple BETA's you will eventually get in.

The NWN beta test (for those like myself who have been testing since the beginning of the system) still lists as a pending, despite the fact that the game has been retail for a year now.

Sorry, all NDAs are in legal terms to ensure it can be help up in court. It differs what game you're testing, but basically, it says you cannot disclose any gameplay information, technical details, screen shots, etc, of the beta. In some, it states you can't even mention you're in the beta.
BetaTestAdmin
09-16-2003, 02:54 PM
As far as the NDA goes, it's pretty much common sense. You can obviously discuss anything you want to with fellow beta testers in a private space, such as on the private boards or in the game itself.
As far as with non-beta-testers, legally speaking you shouldn't even mention which game you're testing, but I don't think Atari is going to be going after you if you mention that you're testing Horizons to a friend of yours. What is a serious violation is posting information about the game in spaces where it can be viewed publicly. Discussing aspects of the game on a public board, posting screenshots, or distributing the game installer are all actions which could get you removed from the beta, and possibly have legal action taken against you.
Clearly, if you just stick to testing the game and discussing it in the places set aside for such discussion, there's no problem.

I can't find the info anywhere, but what ports are Horizons using to connect to the servers and what packets are they sending(tcp/udp)? Because I can't connect, all I get is them saying the servers might be down, but when i login it says that spirit is healthy.
So does anyone know what ports are being used, or where I can find this information since tazoon.com is down?

I had to download Opera to be able to use the "Create your Account" page. I'm able to get through all the screens except it keeps giving me an error saying I haven't put in the minimum number (7)of password characters (I'm putting in 8 characters). Is this a problem other people are experiencing? I haven't been able to get an answer from the support/tech group. If I have put this question in the wrong thread, please forgive.

Ok I have been accepted to the Horizons beta, I have downloaded everything and it all works fine.
My account name and password allow me to log onto all the places I need to log in accept the game itself.
It keeps telling me my name and password are not found. I have been trying for two days now with no luck.
I even tested it out trying to recreate the account in case I missed something, but it says the CD key is already in use and won't let me create a new account.
I am beyond frustrated.
All I want to do is log in, please.

Sign up at BetaTests.net. Being in Australia shouldn't make a difference, as you should still be able to play the game. Also, I beleive the Horizons beta test (not Europe) is the one that applies for Australia.

Don't know if this is the right place to post but here goes...
Got my "you are accepted" mail today :D complete with key and everything. Tho no info. Checked the betatest site and found info for downloading the game atleast. But there and then it stopped.
It was no info on what to do next after you have downloaded. No info what boards to use (I have found that info my self, but I can't use it yet..) No info on where to register the game account etc etc.
So I am just wondering if there will be more emails with the complete information or am I left to dig the things I wonder about out for my self?

Well I managed to think out how to get started, or access the needed account pages, but not beeing able to acess tazoon boards , or find more info sure makes this, well a investigating task to get started.
But since this forum is just for general questions, I am really stuck as I have some questions wich probably falls under the NDA...
So if anyone would know where i could go to look or where to send a mail for some answers, it would be most grateful.. otherwise I guess I have to wait until the Weekend is over and people are back to work... :)

Check out this (http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=322612) thread for information on how to get in. Also, the beta is used for players to find bugs and help straighten the game out for release. You're not playing it "just for fun", nor are you getting paid.

Unless you work for a software company, or have been testing games for a particular company for a long period of time, you will not be getting paid. If, however, you do manage to get a few bucks outta someone, lemmie know cause of the 4 or 5 mmorpg's I've tested, I've got nada in way of financial compensation... not that I'm complaining =)

1) Phantom is not made by Atari, and they have nothing to do with it. For a good reason, it's a huge joke.
2) When they appear on the list. To date, only PC games have been tested, although a few PS2 games have sign-ups.

Once you're accepted, you can submit them via the Horizons section of your BetaTests.net account.

At BetaTests.net, you can sign up to test various PS2 games. It seems at the moment though that none are in public testing, so you may not get in.

For the beta tests? The only one with upcoming signups is Axis and Allies, which takes place on May 11th.
If you mean purging the database to clear out all the pendings, no idea. It would require the techs to do a lot more work, as they can't just wipe the whole thing because they want to keep a record of what users have tested what.

If you go to the thread named:
Which Atari games have YOU tested (http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=363057)
About half way down the page there is a thread by Betatestadmin that says:
Nobody will ever get accepted for the Atari Betatesting System (DB APP) outside of Atari, it's the bug reporting system for the bug reporting system itself, it's only displayed becuase all betatests all displayed on the requests page. At least you know we're not hiding anything.

Not sure. :)
I had signed up but then after I read that thread I decided that it was a waste of space on my profile so I withdrew the request.
I would much rather have my other requests prominently displayed!
Of course, I could be totatly wrong in how they view the applications so it probably doesn't matter either way.

Depends on the test, but usually 2-5 days, I believe. I believe they sent confirmation e-mails for Shadow Ops testers 2 days before the test officially begun, according to betatests.net.

No, they do not get the full game. With over 2000 testers in some tests, that could prove really hard!
And yes, top testers and those who went above the call of duty get goodies.

I doubt it would be something as high as the top 100. Considering that I would suspect only 1/2 of the actual testers submit bugs, and those who do probably submit very few, I would think the range would be a lot smaller to get goodies. I'm not entirely positive though, you'd have to ask BTA.

Thanks

11-11-2004, 01:49 PM
You are not gauranteed compensation (and for legal reason, and budgetary, betatesters are not paid), but sometimes we'll have special gifts for our best-performing betatesters. This is not always the case, though, so that's why we have to be sure that you're not expecting to get a reward outright, aside from getting to try the game before anyone else, and gett the chance to give your input, naturally.
What I look for in betatesters, aside from a fairly powerful system and broadband access, is the ability to find unusual ways of breaking the game, or exploiting its weaknesses, and the ability to articulate these flaws when reporting them. Forum participation and being part of the betatester community is also good.

Don't think that's against the NDA, i've seen testers of other company's posting on public forums that they are/where testers.
As long as you don't tell or show people all kinds of stuff about the game your testing, there's probably nothing wrong with telling people that you are a betatester.

As a background to my question, I am a global moderator at a growing gaming forum called Gaming Universe (http://forums.thegaminguniverse.com) and have been accepted into the Soaked! beta. My question pertains to a specific action I can take there at the end of the beta period.
Once the final beta has concluded, is it considered acceptable to - say, a week before full release - post a preview of the game, review-style? My feeling is it would create some hype for the game once it DOES come out, after all.
If preferred, I can limit to a preview the day it comes out, or something like that. I thought I'd ask before just doing it.

By a preview, I meant much like a normal game review, just talking about what the game will have and my opinions on how the game is/will be. If I am put much in awe from the game being tested, I would be posting a pretty good preview, which equals good hype. :)

When a bug reports has the status "closed" did I find the bug?

got on the beta about 3 weeks I quess and put in for Dragonshard but atm it is still pending...Question is did I do something wrong or miss something or does it normally take a long period of time to be selected for a beta test?

i guess 3 weeks ago the participants for Dragonshard were already selected so no luck for you, unless there will be another wave of testers.
For the pending - in case you werent selected for a beta, youll see it pending for the rest of ethernity (unless you remove it manually), so its normal to see pending on past projects
thanks NX, withdrew it and quess I'll wait it out for next beta test to open. really wanted to try it seeing as AO and Wow have both lost their appeal to me, GW is will have to suffice atm....

Thanks
Mike Gilmartin

Heres a link for a new atari closed beta http://www.terriblesecretofspace.com/beta/use/Timeshift/form1.html
Called Timeshift A first person shooter
The beta test will be composed of the multiplayer game mode only, the purpose of which is to get your feedback on game tuning and balance, help with hardware compatibility testing, and also general functionality testing. Remember that if you are selected for the beta you will be under a strict non-disclosure agreement (NDA) which means you cannot discuss the product outside of our dedicated private beta forum.

As far as I know there aren't any restrictions to where you live. I'm from the Netherlands myself and I didn't have any problems. You can just sign up as soon as betatests.net is back up.

I recently started expeirenceing MAJOR lag times trying to access the site. I've been promoting the hell out of your games on my site, especially back when I had the F.E.A.R beta and I was loving the experience but now I can't get to your site  It's still betatests.net right?
Well more reading has told me... no. Where can I apply for beta's as of now?

Betatests.net has been down for a while now. If a beta is planned to be opened to the public, an announcement will be posted with details on where to apply.

Once new development at games.atari.com resumes we'll likely do a beta for both the current site and content plus RISK.
Betatests.net should return (recoded and better than before) in a month or two :D

I have tried to click on the link that you posted below in order to become a beta tester. You've supplied the link www.betatesters.com in answer to a posting that inquired "how to become a beta tester." When I've done so I've either been sent to a search page stating that that page can't be found or I've got a page that was completely blank. I would appreciate any help that you could give to me in order that I may too become a beta tester.

If you want to become a beta tester then keep watching this board... As Bowarcher mentioned BETATESTS.NET is currently being upgraded/re-written/modernized...
BTA (BetaTestAdmin) will announce if there are any games/products that need beta testing in this forum (not this thread). (which at the moment I believe are none). If he does and you see one your interested in helping out with then post a message in his announcement thread...
until then:
Sit back... Enjoy your time... Hope to see you in a BETA soon :D
PS he will also post when the site is back up... I can not wait either :atari:

Hi Folks,
Because betatests.net is down, these days we do a simple online sign-up form when a beta is announced.
Just keep an eye out for these announcements and there will usually be a link on the actual announcement that takes you to the sign up form.

Ok ... here's what I know ...
1. I found a link on ign.com I guess you can e-mail forum mods about how to become one.
2. No - you do it online/offline. You report feedback on forums or in e-mails.
3. ROTFLMBO ... next ...
4. You need a gaming system - I did beta testing on the PS2, 360 and PC.
5. Either e-mail a forum mod or search google for beta testing.
Here's my experiences with Test Drive Unlimited.
