I do not think that formations would be so important.
There is no ultimate formation. It depends on the equipment of your fleet and your plan, not to mention the formation of the enemy.
For example, the equipment:
1. Your ships are cloaked:
Use formation 6 to quickly get behind the enemy.
2. You have short range equipment (like computer jammer)
Use formation 4 to 6.
3. You are affraid of short range enemy equipment and want to use your long range ones (like rockets):
Use formation 1 to 3 or 7.
Or your plan:
1. You want your larger ships to be closer to the enemy (likely being targeted first):
Use formation 4, 5, 7 or 8.
2. You want the opposit:
Use formation 1, 2, 3 or 9.
Or the enemy formation:
use formation 3 against 8 or 9.

Personally I prefer formation 7 when I face with a large enemy fleet, otherwise usually formation 1 to avoid thinking.

Yes, there is an utimate formation.;) It has been awhile and I'm not sure about the number, but I use whatever formation that put all my ships the farthest from the enemy ships. Then I immediate cloak all my ships; now, I would have all the time in the galaxy to form an attack formation of my own (in most case, my small fleet of about 32 battleships can defeat 1000 Krahen D-ray battleships without taken any damage on my ships). If you use the pre-set formation, your fleet will be destroyed within nanosecond.

No. For example I prefer formation 7 because it gives numerical superiority against other formations. (Funny. Numerical superiority of 15 or 30 against hundreds.:cool: )
