Not neccasarily. You WILL have to know how the spells work and what they do in order to compete with someone who does. But unlike in the CCG, both players have immediate access to the same library (granted you've played through the campaingn) which makes things better balanced when it comes down to it.

Yes play through the quest mode. It does a very complete job of teaching everyone (even us oldschool players) how to survive in the Battleground.
