How can I figure out if I have a dynamic IP or not? How do I deactivate XP's built-in firewall?

Thank you,
Jere

Not sure on the dynamic ip, maybe ask ur isp as for the xp firewall, goto network connections, right click ur connection icon click properties, click the advanced tab and uncheck the internet connection firewall.

it depends on the type of connection you have; dial-up, DSL, cable, T1+.
Dial-up & some DSL connections are dynamic. This mean everytime you connect to the net, you have a new IP address. Cable, T1+, and most DSL are static meaning you always have the IP address becouse you're connected to the net 24/7/365. The only way you can have a static IP on dial-up is to dedicate a phone line to the internet, and never log out. But the chances are your service provider you disconnect you if there is no activity for about 15 to 30 min.
I got onto cable about 6-7 months ago (got a 2 meg connection :D , a T1 is only 1.5 meg per second) and I love it ! I'll never go back to dial-up again if I can help it.
