I'm wondering what a good number of ships to have in an attacking fleet(s) is. Currently I've got around 4 destroyers, 1 advanced destroyer and 25 or so fighters in my main fleet. That seems a large-ish number to me but I saw another race's fleet which had something like 60 fighters.
What's a good number of ships to have in a fleet to kill the 'average' emeny fleet?
Also, if I want to invade a planet, does the type/number of space ships I have effect my chances at all, or will be purely be based on numbers of tanks, etc. (i.e. are spaceships used in ground battles)?

You can find here that (in case of played battles) fighters have no real use, especially later in the game.Originally posted by Ozental

(Late in a normal or hard game thousands of ships.) Not to mention that the quality is even more important than quantity. (For example, if your ships are properly equipped you can destroy 5 destroyers and 60 fighters without loosing any of your capital ships.)Originally posted by Ozental

No, they are not used. (I think not even when laser strike is researched.) However, the more ships the more tanks they can carry, not to mention when the enemy uses orbital guns ...
