Is there a general rule for employing, or not, mercenaries. I mean, these guys who come up to you and will join for you 8k+ credits per year and increase your stats, etc.
Generally, unless you are a hard-core warrior-race, I'm not sure they are worth their money. Fine you get a destoryer or something for 1 year of 8k credits, but carrying this on over many years costs a lot. You can build 1 destoryer or whatever in 3-5 years worth of wages.
Thoughts?

1: Do not employ mercenaries who do not affect the whole fleet.
2: Plan your tactics and fleets and use only mercenaries who fit into them.
Actually, as a human I use only one (a human with an advanced destroyer, but I cannot recall his name) mercenary and mainly because his ship has far more advanced radar than mines. On normal level he takes part in only one or two fights before his ship becomes too slow to accompany my main fleet.

Yeah, and as I play as a Shinari, I don't do much battling and as such I think they might be a bit of a waste of money.

everybody thinks Shinaries are bad at battle, just becouse they can't use torpedos, turbo lasers and mezon guns! but they have ship manipulator! it's easy to research and fast! and if there's Solarians or Antaries in the game easly have an antimatter ray or D-ray(if there's Iberon in the game). so Shinaries not so bad at battles!
