This is the place for all your questions on the game, mostly for newbs who don't know about the game. I can probably answer most questions since I read just about every article google can translate on D3, although I believe some of them are bull, but anyway, all questions here.
First up, is for PR_Flak, my friends asked me why they changed the name to DRIV3R and if there'll be a new trailer soon (besides the one I posted a link to the other night)?

Okey because i'm semi-truck fan i have to use some thing:
1. what like trailer connection system will be, do you just back under trailer and use some button to get it connected?
2. can you see some semi-trucks whitout trailers in traffic?
3. can you go some places to get trailers (docks, train station... and so on)?
4. normal brakes or ABS?
5. are you gonna do realistic brake system, not like in midtown madness?
6. will there be different like semi-truck tractors, not just those peterbilt 379 looking tractors?
7. what will be trucks gear count?
Then some other questions:
8. i saw some pics where was trains station or something like that, are we able to use trains?
9. are cops like in driver 1, i mean that sueside style driving?
10. can car totally wreck whit only one good crash?
11. can you swim?
12. what will happen if car drops to sea, will it just sink and then you have to swim back to shore?
13. are we able to use manual transmission?
14. how big those citys will be?
15. is there gonna be multiplayer game?
16. will player take damag in car crashes, i mean if you hit to truck whit some muscle car, your car takes damage but does player take damage?
17. can we go inside houses?
18. how many cars there will be?
okey i think that was enough :D
matt__jon

1. All you do is back the semi under the trailer and it hooks on
2. Yes
3. Yes
4. Well, according to the manuals of past Driver games, the brakes were automatically set on ABS, but you could turn that off. I don't know if you can this time though.
5. Not sure what you're talking about, never played MM. Players of the Driver series and Stuntman will feel right at home, according to an article, so it should be similar to past games by Reflections.
6. Probably, we just haven't seen the other ones yet.
7. Not sure, there probably won't be gears or anything like that though. (meaning nothing to do with transmissions) But they haven't said anything about that either.
8. I'm not sure about the trains. Martin Edmonson said in an article, if it looks like you can control it, then you can. Well, I guess its all based on your opinion of how it looks, but don't get your hopes up, just in case. I'm hoping to drive trains too.
9. The only description about the cop chases we've heard is that they'll be Hollywood style chases, and so far we haven't seen any cop chases, so who knows...
10. Well, considering you can wrap your car around a pole, yes.
11. Yes
12. It'll probably slowly sink, I'd suspect you can get out of a sinking vehicle, why else would they let you swim (I hope they're using the same logic as me on this one).
13. They haven't said anything about transmissions, I'd assume there won't be any since there weren't any in the past games.
14. Each city will be just over 30 square miles. I don't know if this is counting all the water in each city, I hope not.
15. An early article said there won't be multiplayer, so I wouldn't expect one. Some websites say it will have it though, or online games.
16. Yes
17. Yes, Tanner will even have a house in Miami
18. Last time I heard there were gonna be about 50-60 vehicles, but I'm not too sure about that, because theres a huge diversity of cars, from extremely rare to extremely cheap, and unless they're showing us a few of the secret cars, I'd suspect there are more than that. Again, don't get your hopes up.

Hey, PR Flak, if you're still here, do you know when a direct feed of the video of Driver 3 from the Videogame Awards will be available online? So far we only, I think, got a bit of the whole trailer, I was wondering if there'd be a full version of this (http://members.cox.net/leekirkham1/Driver3/D3_index.html) on the internet anytime soon? Thanks.

That's all they showed on the VGAs, but it might not be the entire video that Atari gave to them.
Here's a question: What do you think the options for the film director will be when Tanner is on-foot?
IceKing

"DRIV3R details emerge
Martin Edmondson of Reflections Interactive talks about his plans for the third game in the Driver series.
Martin Edmondson, the managing and development director of Reflections Interactive, has today revealed new information on DRIV3R via an official interview released by Atari. The game has been in development at Reflections for over three years now, and uses an enhanced version of the physics engine that was used in Stuntman. According to the Edmondson, the physics and dynamics of the game's vehicles have been more or less finished for some time, and the team is currently busy scripting the missions, working on the out-of-car sections, and optimizing code.
DRIV3R will feature around 70 different vehicles for players to take control of, including cars, vans, trucks, bikes, and boats. As we revealed at ECTS earlier this year, DRIV3R will also feature fully articulated trucks. "You can drive around in the cab and when eventually you find a trailer section you can couple up," explained Edmondson. "You're then in charge of a full 18-wheel articulated rig--complete with airbrakes and airhorn."
DRIV3R's primary 'undercover' mode of play will see players reprising the role of Tanner who, along with his partner Tobias Jones, has to infiltrate a gang of car thieves to bring them down. Other gameplay options available will include a survival mode in which players are pitted against four police vehicles, an option to 'take a ride' in any of the game's four cities without having to worry about missions or enemies, and a number of minigames including quick chases, checkpoint races, and the like. DRIV3R will also feature the same film director options as the previous games in the series--allowing players to create their own action replays using multiple camera angles.
Edmondson has stated that the main difference between DRIV3R and the previous games in the series is that the upcoming game is much more realistic, both in terms of appearance and gameplay. Despite obvious comparisons being drawn with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (one of the four cities in the game is Miami), Edmondson claims that most of the inspiration for DRIV3R has come from movies rather than games, and movie car chases in particular. "The Driver, Bullitt, French Connection and so on," he explained. "I would say we were influenced more heavily by the older 70's car chases as most of the more modern chases do not stand up against the classics, with the exception perhaps of Ronin."
DRIV3R is currently scheduled for release on PlayStation 2 and Xbox in spring 2004, with a PC version coming later. For more information on DRIV3R, check out our previous coverage of the game."

PSgamer262

Hmmmm, I think it's just a typo, why would they all of a sudden add a new city???
matt__jon
12-09-2003, 05:59 PM
It doesn't necesarily mean they suddenly added it, it takes more time than that, but if they were trying to keep a fourth city secret, why would they just all of a sudden tell us about it, and then not even mention where it is? Anyway, I doubt there wil be a 4th city. 70 cars, better than 5-60 they said a while ago.

Your car in Vice City stayed for a long while before it dissapered, with D3 maybe they'll leave there cars longer! Its a possibilty, In thr stuntman arena all the parts stayed.
Merlin
12-10-2003, 07:42 PM
Vice City on PS2 was eccentric. Some times you could walk ten paces away and your car would vanish; others, you could go from the strip club to the stadium and back again, your car would still be where you left it.
matt__jon
12-10-2003, 08:09 PM
Yeah, that was annoying in GTA3 and VC how once in a while your car wouldn't stay, I tried to figure out why it didn't work sometimes, I thought maybe you had to be in it for a minute or so, not the case, I think there was just a glitch that did it. Some vehicles in that game could stay longer than others, like tanks. I once made a blockade of tanks to keep the cars in the race on the first island from rounding the first corner (GTA3), and then I finished the missions on that island (over the period of a few days while saving the game and shutting it off), then moved on to the second island and did a few missions there, and while speeding back across the bridge to Portland I was almost off the bridge right when the tanks appeared out of nowhere. Luckily I wasn't driving a big vehicle or it would've exploded. They did eventually disappear though, I think I had to set them on fire though so they'd explode.

I don't know if u saw it, but in Vice City, when Tommy is in is car, he shoots through the windows :S, and it doesn't brake... little detail that makes me say: WhAT ThE HELL

we see it on a lot of pics, the shade seems perfect =/, will it follow the sun ? maybe I'm wrong, but in Gta and Driver 1-2 I think the darkness comes slowly as the sun goes down, but we don't see the shades on all buildings... if they are able to add sun effects like that, congrats ! :)

Does anyone know how the traffic AI will be? Because I remember in the original Driver, you would be driving down the road at 90 and all of a sudden a car pulls out in front of you. I just hope that they improve it a little bit...
matt__jon
12-11-2003, 04:40 PM
I liked that, its boring being able to drive straight down the street without dodging anyone, plus if you miss the car at the intersection if could slow the cops down or they could total their cars. But no, I don't know what the AI is gonna be like, but I assume it'll be like past games where the game randomly put traffic in different places on the road, so its not trying to block you off at intersections, it just happens that way.
I also thought it was stupid in VC how the side windows couldn't break.

Hey does anyone know wether there will be fight simulations in Driv3r (ex. True Crime)? Tanner fighting in the game would bring the awesome value of the game up a whole lot. Even if it is very simple fighting mechanics sucks as kicks, punches, and some grappling.
2Min2Mid
12-18-2003, 05:27 PM
If you left the door of your car open in Vice City, the memory would save it for a while, but if you closed it, it will dissapear soon.
That's what I've heard
matt__jon
12-18-2003, 06:42 PM
Thats probably how it works.
Anyway, I haven't really heard about hand to hand combat, but I'd assume theres at least kicking and punching.
Hey PR_Flak, according to this (http://www.ghome.de/news/3093654397938/atari.php?sid=d796b75785b910c424c265629e51dffa) site, there will be a Driver 1+2 special edition released for PSX at the end of January next year. Any new add-ons to the games, like more cars, better framerate, ability to turn up traffic levels on PS2, play D1 cities in D2 game engine? Anything like that that would make me want it, since I have the first two? Or a PC version?
Tanner02
12-18-2003, 09:52 PM
I was just hoping for some fighting, cause a lack of hand to hand combat in Max Payne made him appear like a huge wuss. Some fighting at least makes you know that he doesn't hide behind guns.
Well yeah add-ons would be great. What would even be better is if like what happened to Metal Gear Solid. They did a total remake of both games in the design of the 3rd game. They keep the same storyline and cut scenes just clean everything up and remaster the soundtrack.
matt__jon
12-18-2003, 10:09 PM
I doubt they'd do that though, since it says its for PSX, so they really can't do much more except optimize the code. And besides, they're concentrating everything on D3 right now. Well, some things, they're probably focusing more on future games now, since they're nearly finished with D3.

A huge wuss with a shotgun. You don't argue with a bloke carrying a shotgun, even if he's wearing a tutu and practicing ballet.
My point is, the hand combat/wuss comment is worthless. Besides, if you have to "hide behind" something, guns are a good place to start. Especially when all your foes are trigger-happy and armed to the teeth :)

What I would like to have is a playable demo of some sort, I know the game comes out mid-March but I feel it is an opportune time for a demo of DRIV3R to show up whether it be for XBOX, PS2, or PC (I prefer XBOX, but will take it anyway given). I remember when I received my demo of Driver for the PS1, I was hooked & played it to death (still have it). It helped me pass the time until its full release. What ever happened to all those cool playable demos I would receive in the mail? I suppose with all the Gaming mags serving up the demos it is a lost practice. So come on Atari, release a playable mission to a gaming mag or make it available as a PC download, and PLEASE do it soon!!!!! If anyone knows of this happening please inform me as to when and how.
Also does anyone know of any preorder specials taking place that includes goodies like Best Buy did with Stuntman? Let me know as I am a DRIV3R junkie and I need my fix.
BTW: I am looking forward to the DRIV3R short films starting in late Jan. Sounds like it will be quite cool.
Thanks,

I don't think they programmed the game to keep cars with more volume around longer, cop cars stay around longer, get a cop to follow you, they can stay up to, or more than 3 times the distance a normal car can away from you without dissapearing. And cop cars are smaller than Bobcats. I think though it might've made gov't vehicles stay around longer. I'm not sure though.

:p Talking about GTA and tanks in GTAVC you could fly a tank around the city!
Step 1: Just enter this code! Floating Cars – Right, R2, 2, R1, L2, 0, R1, R2
Step 2: Now as you drive forward shoot the gun on the tank you gain speed and the begin to fly!
NOTE!!! Turn the gun barrle on the tank the opposite direction you want to go
PLEASE TRY THIS OUT IT IS SO MUCH FUN!!!

I loved the "free ride" part of Driver 2 but I absolutley hated the missions. Does anyone know if you will have any "Freedom" in this game?. The realistic graphics and damage would be great fun, but I'm not going to play that "beat the time limit and catch the train" crap. Just like GTA and VC the game environment was great but a lot of the missions are just plain stupid. I will admit that GTA 3 on PS2 had some great early missions where you could decide how to kill someone. You could cause a traffic jam and trap their car and toss in a bomb...or you pearch on a building like a sniper...y'know? I thought all the games were gonna catch onto that style, but the more I read the lass I see of that. I may be wrong about Driv3r being a very linear game, but that is what I have heard. Any info?
Thank you for any news.

DRIV3R is a linear, story based game. However, there are multiple ways of completing each mission.
And good news for you, the "Take a Ride" option is available the moment you put the game in. I am not sure if all three cities are available right away as you might have to finish the Miami missions to get Nice, and so forth.
F1Canuck3
02-18-2004, 05:27 PM
...that would be good if they included a mode for the non-linear players out there. They usually make you unlock locations though
the missions but I think Driver 2 had 2 locations for free ride and the other two you had to unlock...but I didn't, I just played the free ride until I got bored.....then GTA came out.
Thanks for the info, I wish they put a racing section in Driv3r !

The missions is what makes the game, and the take a ride only extends it to about triple the gaming time, 4 me anyway. But on the other hand thats with D1 & D2. I beat true crime and never put it back in the consol 2 take a drive in the free roam.

So far, they have always said there won't be multiplayer. But maybe they say it to mislead competition (GTA). Online multiplayer would be nice, as long as they don't suspend the head-to-head (splitscreen, or two consoles) multiplayer.
Or PC: LAN-network -> can't be that hard to implement...
Offcourse there will be the possibility to drive in 1st person. It has always been possible, and it will stay for sure..

I have started playing driver 1 & 2 again, in order to get myself prepared for the next.
When i see the latest in-game screenshots and i take a look at the maps, i'm happy to see that the roads are much more varying. Driver1 in fact is boring as hell if you drive from one side of the city to the other. 90° turns all the time.
Driver 2 did a bit better. But 'most' roads where still the same. Also, they mostly had the same 'width'. Repeating buildings and scenery made it again.. boring after a while in the free ride.
In Driv3r, things look much better. Varying on every level. I want to discover new things, new places, awkward situations (like the advertising for Yahoo somewhere in Havana) and nice looking buildings etc...
On the other hand, i think driv3r will be much more difficult... first of all to find your way through the city, but also doing pursuits through all kind of narrow streets with many bends & corners.
matt__jon
02-21-2004, 11:20 AM
Yeah, they picked the cities so driving through all of them would be different. Miami is wide open streets, grid layout, flat. Nice has slightly narrower streets, goes up into the mountains, few grid-like areas, and Istanbul is mostly narrow alleys and smoggy.

Well, Nice goes up into the mountains, so hopefully it'll live up to Frisco. I hope they put Frisco back in eventually. I guess its better they wait though, cause the next GTA will probably be in Frisco, if it is called San Andreas, and having 2 cities that are also in GTA (although it sounds better cause you get 2 in 1) would upset GTA fanboys even more.

F#CK GTA! Tanner was in Frisco first dammit so Tanner owns the city. And it'll look twice as bad for R* if Reflections make a way more better Frisco. And for a secret place in frisco they can add ALCATRAZ...still in businness.

02-22-2004, 05:56 PM
I know, but looks like they aren't doing Frisco this time unless they're hiding something, so they'll have to wait until next time (or Stuntman 2)(or both)(imagine doing Bullit on Stuntman 2)

Oh sorry, it's not confirmed. I just don't see it getting a Mature rating... we'd know by now. Edmondson said there's no blood, and that's probably the only thing that would get M. It's kinda impossible... Driv3r is a driving game, and the ESRB isn't going to overlook that. And I doubt there are going to be cutscenes more intense than Driver 2, which is the only content left that we don't know much about.

Besides, I think if they were aiming for an M, they would've gone all the way and had blood and gore.

It is going to be teen, people just need to except that. The most mature thing about the entire game is the story and cut scenes. I can almost guarantee if the ESRB gives it an M how it stands, Atari will probably disable hitting peds.

...really?...I didn't know that it was going to be a bloodless game?. So why go for the realism then? That's very disappointing, I mean you don't need gore but when you shoot a guy down or run over some bad guy?.....uh....what happens...does a fallen enemy disappear like a Nintendo game?
Every new detail is sounding like a let down....you know what happens with delayed games....you have been warned, I ain't gettin burned Baby !!!!

Yeah, I know how you feel, the first few months of news were good, but then after a while, a lot more things started sounding bad. See what happens when you try to distance yourself from GTA (which its gonna get compared to anyway). I'm not saying make it completely like GTA, but there definately are things that I think could be done better.
1. Can't drive trains. Why?
2. Cars are specific to each city, each city only has about 25.
3. No blood. No biggy really.
4. Can't exit moving vehicles.
5. 8 weapons, 5 of them are weak handguns (MP's and 9mm's). 8 weapons would be better with a better choice, more variety, who cares if GTA has guns you like, Edmonson said the guns are supposed to be fun, what happened?
6. No multiplayer, this doesn't matter to me since I have no one who likes driving games that lives with me, but it matters to other people.
7. Damage lessened so cars would bounce more when they got hit. In the latest trailer a white cab hits another car head on and doesn't get a dent, the hood just flies open.
8. Why's everyone afraid to put a radio in their game now. All cars have radios, except ones that were stolen (I'm talking about the radio, not car). These companies are trying to act like they don't want to be like GTA when its obvious their game has a lot in common with it. Do what GTA does, but do it better. Well, I'm not sure how good Reflections sense of humor is though, their radio might not be as funny if they made one, as in GTA (but VC wasn't as funny as GTA3).
But, I'll still be buying the game, even with these flaws.

I hear you. Some will still get the game, and of course if you love the "Tanner" story or whatever you should get it. I am the kind of gamer that NEEDS that open type game, I hate that over and over again missions. I like to explore and see what the people around do and say. This game looks to have an awesome realistic look that would have been so cool in a GTA type format. I'm sure the game will do well but why limit a game? I think you should let people adjust everything and make it bloodless or a gorefest...lots of driving or lots on foot, adjustable, every gamer is different....did I mention that I hate driving tests? (heh, heh).

yes that's true, how many times in GTA do you end up in the drink after a good chase...glug, glug. Hey! I have a great idea...a new title....."SWIMM3R"...heh, heh. Seriously it IS good that you don't die cheaply in the water.

I am buying this game for what it is, and that is the one and only car chase sim, with unparallel physics and damage modeling.
The blood would be nice but for me it is not necessary for this game. I look at the on foot part as a diversity, a short break from intense driving. Now GTA the blood was great, I personally enjoyed beating someone and walking over them to see my bloody foot prints.

Frsico was one of my favorite citys also, but I think that it would be good 4 driver to do Frisco because then the world would realize that they are board of playin games (GTA Series) with loneytoon graphics

I had no idea they lessened the damage. Why? Why is bouncing better than literally wrapping the car around a tree or ripping the body apart in a rollover? With more damage I would certainly go through cars quicker, but I want to hit something and go

To me, the no blood doesn't bother me, if they had it great, but it's really such a small part of the game it doesn't matter...
And the lessened damage... well it still looks like you will be able to smash up your car pretty good, so it couldn't be that bad.

tell me something..can we still say something that could change something from the game or it is too late now?they can still make changes?

I wish game producers would actually let people know early in production if they read and use some ideas... We're not that stupid, and some of these things we mention are actually creative and could benefit the overall value of games like this. The publishers are the only ones that have official forums and stuff that are read by people who don't work on the game, so the ideas said are usually just what you'd like to see. If Reflections had a website with a forum, they could read the things we say, and maybe realize that many people do think the Film Director is a very important part of the game. Which is an example Martin Edmondson has mentioned, in saying that it's not something everyone would spend too much time on - which is wrong.
I agree that they could find some good ideas from forums. But I would be very surpised if they didn't do some consumer research on there own, so they may get our input in other ways.
My question: Does anyone know or has anyone seen what happens to this (http://www.driver-3.de/gallery/details.php?image_id=64) car when it rolls over? It seems obvious that the windshield should instantly flatten, but I'm curious if that is truly the case since they've lessened damage.
@ IceKing
Yeah, the damage still looks very good, and I'm still impressed with it, so everything is just roses.

Are you sure they did lessen damage? or does it just look like they did? - some of those cars get really messed up, like the bumper that starts falling off of the car after it lands the jump through the wooden scaffolding thingy.

Well, it doesn't hurt to say it, but I think at this point you won't see it in D3. I don't know if they really do read these boards anyway.
Sorry about the confusion everyone. They didn't say exactly that they lessened the damage. Edmonson said in one of the articles I read (sorry, don't have a link) that its more cinematic for a car to bounce off what it hits than absorb the impact. And judging from some of the crashes I've seen, like the cars hitting poles or crashing head on, it effected the damage (since its real-time damage this time and is part of the physics engine, instead of the graphics engine), theres barely a dent on the hood of the orange car that hits the pole near the beginning, in real life the grill would be wrapped around the poled, the hood would be too and would've buckled outward in the place it hit. I think I was expecting too much from the damage. They said we can wrap cars around trees and poles, we have yet to see that.
Some of the damage looks very good, the crushed in bumper and trunk on the pack 2 xbox shots, very good. Oh well, it'll still probably be better than anything else, even if there isn't as much absorbtion in the metal of the cars as I'd hoped.

Yeah, I remember reading that interview about the "more cinemaic" damage. And also, like you said, they were also saying you could wrap the car around a pole... hopefully we'll be able to see that. That would be fun!:D
Guess we'll just have to wait and see!

Well the damage should have a setting adjustment in the options menu. For the hard core damage freak at 75 MPH when you hit a car or pole, ect... your car should be totaled. Get out get a new one. For the people that seem to hit every thing well they can decrease the level of damage taken from higher speed impacts.
They have the option in Colin McRae Rally 04 so why Not in DRIV3R. It could be there and it would be a nice option.
I for one would very much enjoy hitting a pole at 80 MPH during a powerslide around a corner and seeing my car wrap around it to some extent.

And I cried myself to sleep last night, because I thought the damage was definitely lessened. My hopes for total destruction are revived! And tomorrow is another update, so I can sleep well tonight.
A damage setting is a very good idea.

That would be cool if a semi could do that !
But my my question is: will we be able to tell how fast we are going? (speedometer) Because I did not see it in any pics.

Awesome pics stuntdriver. If only!
I think they'll be porting this to PC, sorry to say. Maybe they'll release PC pics sooner or later that will proove me wrong, but since they're building it on the Stuntman engine which was only fo PS2, I think thats how its gonna be. But there was one site that said D3 was originally being designed for PC and would be downgraded for consoles. Well, I'm happy with how Stuntman looked, it looked very realistic for a PS2 game, very nice. Plus, PC will probably have more graphical extras like the Xbox version, maybe a few more.

Plus it was the only site I've ever seen that said it, and its not a main site, so I think it was just something the writer made up, like how on gamespot they said there were four cities, that type of stuff.
