Atari Plans PSP Launch Titles
By David Smith
2/2/2004

Atari has "a couple of titles" in the works for the launch of Sony's PSP handheld late this year, president Bruno Bonnell confirmed today during the publisher's earnings conference call. While Atari is still waiting on announcing specific titles, it will "definitely support" the PSP from its launch, Bonnell said.
Bonnell also briefly addressed the subject of other future products from the major videogame hardware manufacturers, but in essence, the news is that there is no news. While Atari is of course laying the groundwork for games on next generation consoles, Bonnell said, it has received no specifics it can disclose about those consoles or when they will be released.

Whatever Atari happens to have planned, we'll look forward to seeing its games later this year, most likely at E3.

Maybe D3, or a Driver Compilation game, will be a launch title for PSP. It'd be nice to have that D1+2 Special Edition game with a better framerate, more gameplay (like D3's gameplay), and if they feel like taking the time, better graphics too (although they don't need to be much better for that small screen.) Maybe it could have D3's engine but the levels from the old Drivers.

Also on the same site, theres an article on the possibility of the new Nintendo handheld, the DS, having a 3D screen:

Lets just hope both these handhelds have good games, I want both (but only if the DS does have a 3D screen, which makes sense after reading the article, more sense than just 2 2D screens, which seems stupid to me)

Yes, I read that I while ago and the first thing that popped in my head was DRIV3R for PSP, I think that would be awesome. I know I will get the PSP, I am giving the NDS a wait and see approach. If it is 3D that will peek my interest. I want to see what games go into development for it as well.

So they'd rather waste development time on an unreleased handheld than make it for the Cube?

No, they didn't even say Driver 3 is being made for a handheld.

Why waste the time making the graphics worse so they can get it on the cube and run as fast as the PS2 version?

I highly highly doubt it has to do with graphics, aside from maybe texture resolution or cinematics.

Maybe polygons. I have no idea what the system specs of the cube are, but I've played cube demo's in stores and it seems they can't run as many polygons as PS2 games can. But I could be wrong. Could be texture resolution too.

Look. Rebel Strike has more polygons on screen at 60fps with multiple texture layers than any other console game on the market.

It has the power. Have you even looked at how much ram the PS2 has? Technically a PS2 can do a large amount of processing but the low ram really is a serious bottleneck.

The only reason it wouldn't be "possible" is if the textures amount to over 1.5GB. A PS2 and Xbox have to do 8 times as much work to get a single polygon looking like one on the GameCube, assuming it's using multiple texture layers like bump-mapping, self-shadowing and reflections.

Remember...Nintendo had a fall in sales in the past year. It would be a risky buisness move and not every game can be on every system. It has taken loads of money to develop this game. They will definitely expect all of the money back and more with sales.

Yeah, maybe if your N5 does better you'll get to play D4 on it.

Maybe.
