Thought I'd better make a new thread for this as I don't want to hijack the other thread.
What do you guys think of this, have played a demo of and it looks very good but I'm not sure whether to pre-order it and save a tenner (about $18) or to wait until its released and read some reviews of it first.

Sneaked a look at it on my work machine (P4 3GHz, 1 gig RAM, GF FX5200). Slideshow. I'd take a second look if I had a Radeon 9700/9800 though.

Thats odd. I suppose it shows up the difference between the low-end and high-end FXs (i'm using a 2.8GHz, 1gig Ram FX5900XT) bit juddery at all high settings back medium looks pretty good.

True, True. I have a FX5700 ultra in an Intel D865 @3.0Ghz with 1GB RAM. Runs great, looks awesome.

I have 2 gigahertz, 512 MB RAM, Radeon 9600 Pro but it ran fine (with anti-aliasing on, too). So I don't think it's a total system hog, it just works better with some configs then others and hopefully that will be ironed out in a patch at or soon after release.

It only looks good on dx9 cards. People like me stuck with older vid cards end up looking at crud.

Yep, the 5200 looks like it's destined to be a doorstop, the performance on that thing is truly awful.
Unfortunately, this rig is small form factor, which limits the upgrade possibilities. The only potential upgrade is a low-profile Powercolor Radeon 9600SE - would that be a reasonable choice? They're $76 over at newegg.com
Advice welcome, thanks in advance. :)

Ok if I can just steer this back, what do people think of Far Cry or have not many of you seen it running well to judge?

Dont get them started on Graphics cards. They will be at it all day.
PCZONE magazine in the UK have reviewed it, but the online review is in their subscribers area. They gave it 93% and were extremely effusive about it.
I will certainly be getting myself a copy (although I will get it retail, because mailorder sucks if there is no-one at home during business hours)
I loved the semi-branching approach to the map design that meant you have options in how you want to tackle the map and also replay value. So many FPS's I play once and only once. They are linear so once you have experienced it they have nothing more to offer. By my reckoning I have played the FarCry demo level to completion at least a dozen times just looking for different insertion points and hidden paths.

**SMACK** Oh, uh....sorry. Yes I have tried it. I say Awesome!!
I preordered it based mostly on the teaser movies that showed how well developed the built-in mission creator was.
Currently I crank out custom Op Flashpoint missions for the "Thursday night digital crakheads club". Seeing the FarCry editor in action has given me new custom mission possibilities to look forward to.

A freind of mind tried it on a machine designed for serious graphics work and it chugged. The only was he got it smooth was when he turned down the detail to the point it looked like any other FPS. *shrug*

Looks good but AFAIK it only has 'checkpoint' autosaves, at least I couldn't find a quick save in the demo. :(

theres a quicksave mod

btw, one thing i LOVE about the demo is there are 2-3 insertion points, you can do some NICE ambushes with the M4 rifle and proning behind some bushes and sneaking really close to an encampment.
the binoculars are pretty badass too...they have a directional mic on them so you can hear what you're looking at (silly random convo's of bored soldiers)

This is a good thing. Quicksaving cheapens the game. A penalty for dying keeps the tension up.

I hate not having a quicksave, because as a parent I can't afford the time to keep redoing the same gamplay over, and over, and over again.
Non quicksave FPS games increase my tension alright, because they're so frustrating!
And yes, I would have liked a quicksafe / save anywhere in Edge Of Chaos!

woulda been nice..but the big egg rock base was always a 2 minute trip away...sometimes less.

Stephen dont worry too much about it. The demo level alone had 8 checkpoints on it (that I ran across at least).
What ever you do make sure you grab the patrol boat from the nearby dock at the start. It is so much fun to buzz about in and the machine and rocket launcher are devastating.

I've tried both demos, the original and the second one called "Research" which they say has some of the AI issues fixed.
The mod "TC_CryModification v 0_1" worked very well for saving and quicksaving with the original demo as far as I can tell. It didn't work on the 2nd demo but it wasn't made for that one, I guess. It will probably be a rather enjoyable game.
Whats all the hype about a "totally inovative" AI?
For me, at the "normal" difficulty level the missions were very hard and at "easy" extremly easy. The difference seemed to be only a reduction of the hit points ratios between the player and bots??
No doubt, It does require "intelligence" to be distracted by a rock that was thrown behind the bots. (theoretically that is an intelligence bourn of fantasy)
No intelligence is required imo when the Bots very effectivly shoot through walls, the engine knows where the player is anyhow. More realisticly intelligent would be: they have a limited amount of ammo too and wouldn't risk shooting at something a human can't see?
Bots don't just attack head on, they can find complex paths across large areas of the map and search you out just fine (for example if you snipe from a distance). They will even sneak around behind you in winding tunnels to attack from behind.
At the same time they leave their posts and are fairly slow at finding the paths so you can send them on a wild goose chase and infiltrate from behind easily.
There is something fudgy about the way they seem to "know" if you have targeted them with the rifle scope for more than a few seconds at a time.
Imo the AI does have some interesting features but the old problem of a situative based decision for seemingly contradictory behaviour is still there, for example:
Bots will, during combat, ignore containers of explosives right next to them, or even take cover behind a barrel of fuel instead of fleeing from the potentially deadly explosion.
Of course, that could be considered a game "feature" from a "blow stuff up" perspective, but it's not very intelligent.

well the AI is still pretty good.
the game really reminds me of operation flashpoint..without the hair splitting difficulty. :)

"Bots will, during combat, ignore containers of explosives right next to them, or even take cover behind a barrel of fuel instead of fleeing from the potentially deadly explosion."
No, that would be called comic relief.
Now I'm really looking forward to playing this if only to see how badly the A.I. will behave. This could be a "knee slapper" title.
Oh wait, it's not supposed to be...... nevermind.

silliest thing i've seen an AI do...stand there as i walk by not seeing them, and YELL something out instead of just shooting me...
needless to say, he got mowed down by my P90 for opening his big mouth.
2nd stupidest, mow down their own teammates, seriously..one of em just started shooting his buddies, one by one...
smartest: ****ing surround my ass in the jungle.

Yeah, the AI seems a bit uneven. Sometimes they're really smart and believable. Other times they sit there and keep shooting the dock.
