commence with the drooling, get the 2 demo's :) BUY IT. :)

thought i'd give ya'll a heads up as to the release and amazing graphics level. :)

PS. dont run this on anything less than a geforce 4200ish card.
my 9600 pro handles it like a peach. :)

i really enjoy the gameplay. really tactical.
reminds me of operation flashpoint, just without the hair pulling difficulty. :)

stealth is crucial...and i love steath games (deus ex, MGS1/2) :)

How many FPS's can you play the same 5 or 6 times and find a different path to the end (and occassionally back to the beginning)?

If you are unsure of the gameplay, get a nice bit of jungle with a patrol mincing through it, select your dessie and fire a shot at them, now sticking with the dessie see how long you can survive with them hunting you down.

great fun.

First few a little downers: There is a very silly bug in the second mission that can be corrected by tweaking a single character in a config file. I cant run the game smoothly at 1024x768 on a AMD 1700+ with a FX5600.

And the rest: This game is great. Involving. Challenging, Beautiful, Fast paced, Slow Paced, Imaginative and generally good fun. Oh and it still looks better than any of my other games even when playing at 800x600 (which runs silky smooth btw)

I am on mission 5 now (I would be further, but I had to fight the wife for PC time this weekend) and barring the aforementioned bug-ette I am enthralled. I haven't had that 'I wonder what happens next' feeling since I played medal of honour (or even perhaps Half-Life).

Remember the sniper rifle can be your friend and your worst enemy (it gives away your position instantly).

Get an MP5 as quick as you can (tunnels section on the communications island - Fort mission) for quick and quiet takedowns that dont give away your position, although always go for the headshot, mooks in full body armour can take almost a full clip of body shots from the SMG.

Oh and if you can get to an alarm in 5 seconds the reinforcements dont tend to show up.

Arrived on saturday for me, A day late in the post, I won't be able to play it for 3 weeks as my computer is at uni and the one at home has no DVD drive or graphics card capable of running it.       Grrrrr!!!!! Ah well will have to drool over Screenies and the manual for 3 weeks. D**M the Royal Mail.

Yeah it is really wierd. Suddenly we have had 2 AAA games come out on DVD as their primary format.

There must be some industry standard saying that there are enough DVD's in the country to make this a viable option.

I bought both (UT2004 and FarCry) and they took a 9Gb chunk out of my harddrive.

Yea, I really like the ability to go anywhere, as opposed to most other game's "here is a path, cant get off it" which from my best knowledge is still even in HL2..

Beware ATI users. I know this game brags up NVIDIA up and down, but if I boost the EFX too much with my ATI 9700 pro the game will not load. I occasionally get some weird graphic tearing and need to reboot to correct. Funny how the latest patch seems to deal with NVIDIA issues only. Grrr friggin grr. Anyone else having trouble with camera angles when driving the jeep? Aside from that, the game is fun and looks incredible. I am currently moving through the rusted Jap carrier.

The game doesn't like Antialiasing being forced on. Set the quality settings in the ATI control panel to 'normal' (application preference for AA), and set the appropriate detail level and antialiasing in Far Cry itself.

I'm running the game with full detail on at 1024x768, and it looks lovely and plays at a decent framerate (Radeon 9800pro, with AthlonXP 2400+).

Damn this game is good.

Nice balance of sneaking, steaming in and sitting on the next planet across and popping heads with a sniper rifle. Oh and beware of the Trigens, even the early ones you come across are bloody dangerous and quick. The bigger ones are just stupidly tough.

For those tight combat situations I would heartily reccommend a flashbang followed swiftly by a frag grenade. Once they are stunned they cant dive for cover. Once the grenade has gone off steam in with the Jackhammer to finish the job.

Excellent game. I love to fire off a few rounds from a nice clearing, shift to a spot where I can hide and watch, and then wipe out the opposing patrol when they move into the open to flush me out.

The AI is quite good. I have been flanked several times. And The Corporate is right, the sniper rifle is a dead giveaway. It makes a much more balanced weapon now. No silent kills. You have to choose carefully when and how to use it best.

However, it does contain my most hated feature combination:

Near instant kill opponents, and no control over saving.

The control scheme is a little frustrating, but not sure how I would rather it worked. The second mouse button would be nice for grenade throwing. But if I did that, would I really want to have aimed fire back? I do wish that it was easier to use the underslung grenade launcher. It is just a bit too awkward to be better than thrown.

steve: bet you wish you had this kind of tech for i-war.

what amazes me most, is all the surface shaders in use, pipes are rough and shiny, and show it, the torpedo's on the carrier are just awsome.
trigens are heavily bump mapped
also alot of surface interaction, shooting chains out to make a bridge tilt under an enemies feet, etc.
maybe only HL2 will rival it.

By the time HL2/Doom finally arrive, I can't believe the graphics will have the same "wow" factor of Far Cry since CryTec has done so much right, and first. I thought that lighting and shadows in DXIW were as good as they got until FC. Breathtaking.

I-War 2 had pretty good tech for its time. Still, in a space game you only really get a chance to enjoy the pretty graphics when you're really close to something, but unfortunately it's more difficult to get close to stuff in a space game than in a FPS.

where LODing comes into play. :)

but yes, iwar 2's gfx are still good

especially the lighting. i use iwar2's lighting as mood therapy. in the depths of winter, i like to visit firefrost. after a busy day... mwari, or some of the fomalhaut systems. theres a spot near a star somewhere in fomalhaut, that, if it was the future and i owned a space station, id move it to and sit on my... space porch, with an old dog, and carpet slippers.

I could use a tactics suggestion as I am a bit stuck.

On my way to rescue the CIA lady in the control mission I have passed through a medical laboratory where you first see an armed trigen.

The bit I am stuck on is the next set piece. You go down a couple of corridors through a door into a firefight between mercs and trigens. The mercs have a mini-gun emplacement and the trigens have numbers and big claws. I must have tried this section 20 times now and I have killed everyone a couple of times but have come out so weak that the next encounter is over before I can respond.

Suggestions?

I really love the graphics in IW2, sometimes I just used to sit by an L-point and watch the different ships some through, or float in deep space and look at all the pretty dust clouds and galaxies in some of the systems.

I don't have Far Cry, but I recently went out and bought Hordes of the Underdark for NWN. As a singleplayer RPG campaign, it gets just about everything right, good play dynamics, fun plot, and tons of atmosphere. Very recommended. :)

The mercs have a mini-gun emplacement and the trigens have numbers and big claws

Edit: added spoiler tags.

I hung back near the chain link fence until it sounds like the mercs are almost done. Then I bounced a flash grenade around the corner. I was planning to attack, but it turns out there is a huge explosive item right there. And the trigen with the missile launcher hits it (must have fired on the grenade) and blows everyone to bits.

That leaves a flaming barrel. You can move the barrel by shooting it with the mini gun. I put it in front of the next door, then crept up to trigger the next bunch of mercs - right into the flames. I killed the rest with head shots.

Into the kitchen, trigger an army of trigens. Sprint run for the minigun. They fly out into a mass of bullets from me. Only one gets a swipe (still enough to take out full armor). I armor up on corpses - on to the next part of the level.

I did notice there was another explosive tank. Perhaps that was meant for the trigen army.

It is wicked tough now. I am stuck trying to cross land. Ouch. I wonder what this game is like on the harder levels?

Thanks Grandpa. I'm glad I am not the only one finding the game a proper challenge.

The game offered freeform play - and with the open levels they really deliver. I spent half an hour just hang gliding around - that was good fun! There is one level where you can just see this tower in the distance, I sailed over that way, and a few tries later found a way I could land if I just approached it right. Then I had this excellent sniper spot loaded with ammo, and planted behind the opponents. Well worth looking for.

Another level I just wandered around in the jungles for a while. Looking for possible approaches. I find it fun to just creep around. But then I am not much of a FPS run and gun type.
