My old PIII 500Mhz 128MB RAM with a Voodoo 3 3000 was recently upgraded from windows 98 to windows XP.

On Windows 98, I-War: Special Edition worked perfectly, with no faults what so ever. However, when I try to run 3dfx 800x600 mode on windows XP it starts, then immediately crashes to desktop, giving me an error saying:

A problem has been detected during BRender initialisation

Please refer to the readme file for help on this problem

Obviously the readme file says nothing. Besides, the game worked perfectly on '98. What is wrong? How can I fix my problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I-war is one of the best games ever made (i've completed both)

The problem is that Voodoo3's do not have proper XP drivers. You might be S.O.L :(

BTW, you have XP running on a 500? Ouch. Then again, I experimented with running it on a Pentium Pro 233.

Well I tried running it on my laptop, which has a Geforce 2 Go card, and I got the same problem. Should I try using the Glidewrapper? And if so, what settings should I use?? (on the wrapper)

Now that would be funny, a voodoo3 running iwar in emulated 3dfx mode :bulb:

Please, I would greatly appreciate any help in solving my problem. Are there no hardcore veterans of the independence war out there to help me relive my Navy days???

Hmmm... Thanks GrandpaTrout (and others). That gets me to the nav screen. But now it displays very slowly. As in move the mouse and wait three minutes for the cursor to move.

Thanks for all the help guys, but I think I'll focus on getting a joystick for my legacy system instead of spending more time on the glide wrapper. If I had no legacy system I'd stick it out with the wrapper, but I wanted to do another run of Privateer II anyway.

Johan - you might try some of the WinXP drivers for your 3dfx card over at voodoofiles.com - this is a bit of a shot in the dark but it may be worth a try. That site is very helpful.

Regarding your laptop, you can probably use the wrapper. Just install it, run it with default settings, and then run IW in either of the Glide modes (the 800x600 is better since it looks nicer). Make sure to turn starfield blur off within the game, or your framerate will slow to a crawl.

Good luck! Post back with your results. :)

Is there anything I need to know about installing GlideWrapper to work with Independence War??

Also - there are no XP drivers (3rd party or official) for Voodoo 3 3000 available. There are however drivers for win 2k, but I'm not sure installing those would be such a good idea. Should I give it a try?

Oh yeah it says it is an 'Independence War Loading Error'

The Program runs fine in software mode, but crashes after doing a mission.

Software mode doesn't use your video card's 3d acceleration.

Not sure what to do about your Voodoo3, I'm afraid. For your laptop, just download the wrapper, install it, run it once, then run IW, and you should be good to go. It should be that easy. If you have trouble, post back here.

Hope this helps.

Yes the glide wrapper on the laptop definitely works - thanks a lot for your help. Now I just need to solve the problem on my desktop.

However, if I complete a mission, it crashes straight to desktop. Any ideas??

That bug may well be fixed in the next version of the wrapper.

How big is the normal install supposed to be? I've recently been trying to finally go back and finish independence war 1, but even with the glidewrapper I get a Crash to desktop right after a black screen. Is the install really only ~80mb?

Where is the glide wrapper? I want to test it in my new computer.
