View Full Version : My DSL, update
Thanks for the help a while back guys. I would reply to the original thread, but apparently we won't be getting them back. http://smilies.jeeptalk.org/cwm/3dlil/rolleyes.gif
Everything is up and running.
Getting 210/1200 (256/1500 advertised) at RWIN: 31600, MTU: 1492 (PPPoE). And running through a Linksys BEFSX41 Firewall/DualVPN router.
And all for $30US/month! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif (local phone through company and special geographical pricing).
Hopefully I will be able to get 384/3000 for an additional $5US ( :haha: ). If I get this new service with the faster upload speed, I probably then get into the server stuff talked about in the lost thread.
Thanks again,
DrCR

I hope that "geographical" low price isn't because you are far away from a DSL substation and won't get fast service. Because DSL really only works best within a few miles of a central office. That's why it's so popular in large cities; many cable TV lines are overloaded already providing TV to so many, so using the phone works better.
Sometimes the cable signal is so weak in my apartment that the cable boxes have to be rebooted.
My 210/1200 is about right based on those in my area, but outside the 'special geographical pricing' area as well as those through the same provider across the US.

p.s. At about 92% efficency

 Whoa, that's really bad. Who's your provider (NY right?) What are you paying, your caps, and avg upload/download? Perhaps you should consider switching.
My 210/1200 is sustained, reliable, and its mine. All mine, no sharing with the neighborhood. ;)

I have a cable connection capped at the official speed of 256/3000. I still can't believe it, but I get speeds right about 256/3000. It's just not normal to get internet as fast as it's supposed to be.

Maybe no one else in your area has subscribed yet. That's the way it is for a friend of mine. He gets bindingly fast rates much like you do.
It's all fun and games until the whole neighborhood subscribes and esp. if some of them are gamers. Watch the bandwidth fall through the floor...
At any rate, enjoy it EricMan! I envy you. :D

<insert typical gripe about only having one provider of DSL/no cable in my country on the ass end of the world>
Though, on the other hand, I'm now living about 500m (in a direct line) from the main telecomms centre (http://www.skycity.co.nz/cache_sky_tower_homepage.htm) of... well the country & there's a new wireless 250k service at a fairly competitive price... I just need a job :bulb:

Opp, when I said I needed to reboot the cable box, I meant the TV cable boxes. :) Specifically the new ones we got that import TV schedules and the like. We even have a plug-in cable amplifier, but sometimes the signal just breaks up because there are so many people on the cable lines.
We use Verizon DSL exactly because of those city conditions.
