I know you can't really compare those 2 games, but in a way they can be compared, because, after all, they are games.
Battlezone II is a first person tactical tank sim in which you control other units in a plot that follows a storyline using a mission structure.
EOC is a space sim in which you are playing a story also.
After being playing those two at the same time I'd say that EOC has great graphics, but also Battlezone II.
However if you played the first Battlezone, you kind of feel that the sequel is more like Mechwarrior than Battlezone. Even the airstrike reminds you the aerotechs in MW2 series.
Except for Pluto, the environments are not quite exotic in a spacebound way. Jungle, snow, the ugly dark planet (I say ugly because it was made with poor taste). Not very imaginative but it looks decent (except for the dark planet).
Battlezone II has very interesting in game situations and it has not the steep learning curve that the previous game had. Indeed the functionalities that are accesible for the player are enhanced as well as the interfase. But the lack of a decent storyline ruined all the good things it had and all the enhancements, and that's the main complain I have.
So I am playing Battlezone II because I bought it, to see it completely.
EOC also has a better learning curve but it still has some illogical things inherited from the first game. For example in the mission where you go to the Maas Station to steal a cargo pod, not placing the replacement pod in its place causes the enemy to start attacking you, and you don't know why it is happening.
At first glance it seemed logical that The "useful pod" was the pod with the fighters. Otherwise it is unknown why it is useful.
It is illogical that you have to undock Jafs vessel since you can be spotted as a separate object. Logic says that the cargo pod should be given to Jafs and Jafs come to base with you attached to it and you undock elsewhere. There is plenty of room in Jafs ship to dock the cargo pod.
Stations don't have a damage bar. How are you supposed to eliminate the Marauders base?
Those illogical things led me to do something I hate... to get a walkthrough to win the mission.
I still have the "need ore" mission active with "pirate ore" and "trade via Jafs" objectives at the Aldo station. How do I get rid of those, it is unknown to me. Walkthroughs don't refer to it. I have looted the cargo vessels repeatedly and the objectives are still there.
Also, when I contact the Stepsons to go after the marauder base and I dock with Lucrecia's base to save the game, the wingmen are gone.
However, EOC is far better than IWDE and the appealing thing is the storyline. But the annoying thing is the illogical elements that are present.
So EOC is simply better because of the storyline. In terms of gameplay I find Battlezone II and EOC equally appealing. So EOC wins. But I still hate to use a walkthrough...
