As you guys are space-sim fanatics, I was wondering if any of you might know if my copy of Wing Commander IV on DVD is worth anything.

It was an OEM copy supplied with the old Creative Labs DXR2 DVD decoder card, and is very difficult to get working properly on a modern PC without that card.

Essentially it's a Win98 version of WC4 (no hardware acceleration though), but all the movies are MPEG2 format, and are played through the Windows old MCI interface - which not many software players support. You can watch the footage directly by loading it into a software DVD player though.

I've still got the DXR2 card and I'm thinking of ebaying the WC4 DVD and giving the decoder card away essentially free with it.

What do you reckon?

Hmmm... I have WC4 on CD. It takes 4 CDs and there is an EXE file (sort of Windows patch) I have elsewhere to run on Windows. It works fine in my old P233. Haven't tested it in my new computer (DX9, PIV 3Ghz, 512 DDR RAM).

If I didn't have it I'd buy it. Not really aware of how much it would cost, but it is definitely a great game. I don't get rid of good games, but that's me.

Hmmm, though I've not seen the dvd on ebay for a while, I'd guess that the DVD version would be not be worth much more than the CD version. Course, I don't think that people are actively searching for that title, looking more for the Kilrathi Saga, which is hard as hell to get a good copy of... Too bad Origin never released more of those (tho there are theories that Origin leaking slowly to the market and justifying the $170 pricetag)... Mabe you can net $25, but that'd be the absolute maximum, I'd guess...

PS. AR, it takes 6 CDs, iirc. I believe that WC3 & WCP were both 4 CDs, but WC4 was definately 6.

Since I am WC fan I would like to add that it’s rare right now, and a lot of WC fan are looking for it (including me:)). The last two I tried to go for on Ebay here in Germany went for 26,02€ and 35,52€. If you will announce it on some wc fansite, like www.wcnews.com for example, you’ll probably get more, especially since you’re also giving away videocard that it came with. Just my humble opinion.

PS And Coolie is right WC4 takes 6 CDs

Thanks for that link, very useful!

I'll sort it out and put it up for auction. Even if it only sells for a small amount, it's better than nothing.

Huh, who knew? (well, apparently, not me...)

Store w/ DVD edition (http://starvector.com/cgi/lp.cgi?97259044+ca0281.html). Doesn't seem to be in stock, but it lists @ $40. (from wcnews.com... haven't been there for a while)

PS. There seems to be a thread on the wcnews forum (http://www.crius.net/zone/showthread.php?t=9008&highlight=version), where a guy is working on a patch to play the dvd in XP... *shrug*

I'd think it would have extra collectibility value by way of being Steves' copy :)
(assuming that Wing Commander fans have a healthy appreciation for Iwar)

I would say that not many wc fans appreciate iwar, but there are some...
Don't be surprised if you meet some overly zealous wc fanatics :(

Infidels!
Worse than infidels, incompetent infidels.
That was some really unimpressive destruction

I'd have thought WC games would be much more liable to destruction for being a rip off --by Starwars fans :haha:

Well I can happily live with all of it. My fantasy allows a happy coexistance of SW, B5, WC, I-War, SL+FL and some other Space Operas. I even watch Star Trek from time to time... :D

I don't know about the other three, but if they think I-War and WC are related in plot or game dynamics...they obviously haven't played it.

Is there a place I can write to in order to give them a verbal spanking? ;)
