New Coaster World Record

I was involved in a new world record last Friday...the most naked people riding a coaster!

The record was set on the Nemesis Inferno roller coaster at Thorpe Park, England. The coaster train capacity of 28 is the new world record, as three full trains of naked people rode early Friday morning whilst the park was closed.

Fear not...we sat on plastic coverings, which were changed after every ride!

This is a trip report on Friday's events at Thorpe Park.

The event was to set a new world record (recognised by Guinness World of
Records, who were represented at the event) for the greatest number of naked
people on a roller coaster. Originally it was going to be held on Colossus,
but it was switched to Nemesis Inferno on Thursday, which I believe was due
to some problems they were having with Colossus that casted some doubt over
whether it would be available early on Friday. I was happy with the switch,
but was worried about that mist tunnel!

In total 81 people turned up to take part (76 university students from 15
universities around Britain, an older couple from Bath, Tony (a naturist who
had heard of the event from Bare Witness, as I did) and Richard Jones and
myself from coaster clubs).

We were registered and, after signing waiver forms for the TV and reporters,
were taken to a large empty room to get changed into bathrobes (which were
provided by the Park). There were some vanity screens in one corner of the
room in case the ladies wished for privacy, but most people, ladies
included, got stripped off and into bathrobes in the open area! Of the 81
taking part, about 20 were women.

We were led to Nemesis Inferno and then split into groups of 28 (the
capacity of the coaster) to ride. Richard and I were on the very first train
of the day. Each batch of 28 volunteers were taken to the ride station,
where we disrobed and boarded the coaster train. Each seat had a plastic
cover which was replaced after each ride to avoid any health issues, and we
had to keep our shoes on to satisfy health & safety regulations.

It was apparent that many of the students were somewhat afraid of the
coaster experience, and, together with the fear of being naked in public,
made it a real scream, literally! The coaster was as good as I remembered it
from last time I was at Thorpe, quite intense, smooth and exciting. Wow! (as
John Wardley would say). The only problem was the temperature. We were
assured that the mist would be turned down to its lowest setting, but on
riding it was apparent that even its lowest setting was pretty wet, and
freezing cold! As well as getting somewhat damp by the mist in the tunnels,
the event was held on a very cloudy morning between 8.45am and 9.30am, with
temperatures around 7C (45F). It also rained from time to time during the
naked riding, making it even colder. After riding we all robed-up and left
the station to allow the next batch of riders through.

Several of us managed to get on the coaster again during the naked session,
and Richard and I clocked-up 3 goes in total. Susan (my wife), who had come down with
me for the day, was allowed through to the ride area for most of the
session, and she spent her time looking out for flashing male students! She
took a few photos (mostly of semi-unrobed men I believe) although we will
have to see how shaky they are when they come back from being developed! I
did a little filming, although the rain limited the amount of filming that
could be done, and also I wanted to ride as much as possible during the
naked session.

Although technically each train-full of riders equalled the record with 28
naked riders, they decided to have one "official" train as the record
breakers. The winning train was selected on the best "on-ride" photos, and
our train won! We will all get certificates from Guinness World of Records
of our record entry, and entered into the Book of Records..

The students used the day to raise a lot of money for charity too.
Individual universities raised money through sponsorship, and Thorpe Park
gave £1000 to one student for his University to donate to their chosen
charity. The winning student was chosen on the basis of the funniest ride
photo. He managed to sneak a piece of paper on with him which said "I see
naked people".

After riding we stood around whilst the media did interviews, took photos
etc. There were quite a few reports in Saturday's press and on the Internet,
with photos and reports in The Sun, The Mirror and the Daily Express
newspapers. Richard and I could be seen in our white bathrobes in both the
Express (page 9) and a much clearer one in The Mirror (page 3!!). I spent
some time with the press photographers afterwards, who were all sorting
their photos on their laptops. It surprised me how much they all worked
together, swapped best photos etc, despite working for competing newspapers!

We all received a "goody bag", a ride photo, and a free day at the park.
Many of us kept the bathrobes too. It was an excellent day, and a totally
unique one. A couple of us took advantage of the event to have our photo
taken naked in front of the coaster!

The ride experience was exhilarating, liberating and cold!...but immense
fun. If the opportunity arises to beat the 28-rider record, I will
definitely be up for another naked coaster challenge! (even if I have to
become a "student" for the day again!).

how did people get to be elected to ride in the back/front?



i'd be worried of getting a little... excited... (though the cold would have helped probably)......

and Collossos, is that a wood coaster? I don't think I"d want to ride one nude, too painful, and negative Gs and nudity might not be a good thing.

Yes, I thought that it was a little unfair that only one train got the certificates...but all of us had the opportunity to be joint-record holders as each train carried a full load. The front and back seats were taken on a first come first served basis, apart from the last few rides, where the media specifically asked for the pretty girls to be on the front...that's plain unfair!

As far as excitement goes, it was far too cold for that!

Colossus is the world's first 10-inversion coaster (made by Intamin) and is of course a steel coaster. There is a huge wooden coaster called Colossus at Heide Park in Germany (coincidentally where I was last week).

Another event is being organised at Alton Towers later this month!

Details as follows:


Granada is celebrating 50 years of Guinness World Records with a live 2 hour show on iTV1 on Saturday September 11th from 8pm. Coverage will continue on ITV2 after the main show.
As part of the show we are looking to spend an evening in a theme park sending people onto various rides naked to break some records. Obviously entrance to the park will be free and the park will be closed to the public for filming. The record will be pre-recorded one evening between 23 and 29 August at Alton Towers (Staffordshire), and broadcast on the live show. As it is on from 8 till 10pm there will be no major full on nudity shown and the rides cover all the important bits! The exact date is still being negotiated with Alton Towers. The rides that will be used to set a record are also still in negotiation but will involve a distinguishing element such as distance, water or duration
We will definitely know the final details by the end of this week.

Trip Report - 27 August 2004

Registration for the World Record Naked Coaster-riding attempt commenced at approx 4.30pm in the Administration building behind Towers Street, where we signed TV waivers and had a photo "mugshot" taken by Vanessa from Granada.

Once everyone had arrived we were led through the park (the long way) to the Cadbury's Heroes area adjacent to Air. We got changed into our bathrobes (provided by the park) in portacabins behind the gated exit nearby and then waited for the fun to start.

We were joined by two "Page 3 Girls" (the event was being covered exclusively by The Sun, and was in today's newspaper and also on their websiteThe Sun (http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2004420339,,00.html)) and were led to the area adjacent to the Nemesis exit path. At this stage we were told by the Guinness World Records staff that all jewellery had to be removed (something they didn't insist on at Thorpe Park), including watches, rings and even ALL piercings!

Gathered in a large group on the slope adjacent to the exit path, we were told by the film crew that, on their signal, we were to disrobe, whilst an interviewer was being filmed on the exit ramp (so we would be in the background of the shot). At this stage, loads of Alton Towers staff appeared from nowhere! One of the participants was a female member of AT staff, so they had all come along to cheer her on! A few of us were interviewed on
camera, and then we were ready to ride.

At this stage, the funniest thing happened. As we all know, on busy days the Monorail queue takes a long time to clear, so despite the rides being closed, the last few trains of guests were leaving the park. Imagine their surprise as they were passing Nemesis, seeing a group of either robed or totally naked people waving to them! The looks on their faces! Many people did a double-take, some pointing (and laughing), others clasping their hands over their mouths in shock and surprise. They could not believe what they were seeing. I guess one or two might complain about it...you know what people are like...but I'll never forget some of the expressions on their faces.

Once given the all clear we ran (literally) up the exit ramp to get on Nemesis, all of us completely naked apart from shoes. Two of the front seats were reserved for the Page 3 Girls. I managed to get on row 2 on the first train. Strangely enough, despite all of us being naked when leaving the sloped area, the Page 3 Girls, who take their kit off as their "day job", only took their robes off when reaching their seats! Wimps!

Not all riders managed to get on the first train. Nemesis seats 32, which is now the new World Record for the number of naked people on a coaster (beating the previous record of 28 set at Thorpe Park in May). I am not sure exactly how many people took part in the event, but I would guess at approx 40 people, so some had to wait for the next train to equal the new record. I expected the vast majority of riders to be male, but around a
third of the riders were female. In case you were worried about the public who were to ride Nemesis the next morning, the seats were draped in plastic covers to protect the seats!

In total, 5 full trains ran "naked", and I managed to get on all of
them...including once on the front row and once at the back Fortunately, the weather was very kind to us (considering how poor it has been the last few weeks) and any rain cleared the park mid-morning. The sun got out in the afternoon, and so the naked session was not too cold. Riding naked, you get
a bit cold during the ride itself, especially on the front row, but when you stop in the brakes you suddenly get a warm "glow", which sounds strange, but it's true.

As it was starting to get dark, many of the photos were taken early in the session, and much of the filming was done in the station. The last ride of the night was just after 8.30pm, when it was almost dark, so we got some naked dark riding too, which was superb, if a little cold!

The ride photos had been kept on during the session and were made available to riders, but at the normal price of £4.95! Alton kept the nearby drinks and food stall open too, but again they charged the normal price (For the publicity they got, it would have been a nice gesture to have offered a warming complimentary coffee, but alas they still wanted our cash). I told the girls in the photo booth that I couldn't buy a photo as I had no money on me...but then again, I was standing there totally naked! I quickly got changed and returned with cash to buy a fridge magnet with my photo on.

We walked back through the park to the Admin car park and left for home. The Sun were making use of the empty Admin car park to get some photos of a naked Page 3 girl, posing in front of their stretch Limo (a mental picture that kept me awake nicely for the 4-hour drive home)!

Compared to Thorpe Park this event was much more "naked". At Thorpe, all the nakedness was confined to the station and the coaster...here we were naked in the open, and pretty much non-stop for 2 hours. After the initial period of nakedness, nobody really seemed bothered trying to cover themselves up
after that...we were one big naked happy family!

Congratulations, again, David! How thrilling for you, in more ways than one! I always enjoy reading about your naked coaster riding exploits! Glad you were able to make it on the coaster all five times, too. Can't believe they made everyone remove their piercings...that's a little strange, but whatever! From your story, it sounds like the wife wasn't able to be with you on your excursion. Hopefully, she was there to share your world record experience though! Glad you had a good time!

Yes, Susan couldn't make the event this time (lack of available holidays at work). It was really excellent fun...and I have some memories that will last a very long time. Imagine 40 people naked running around on a coaster platform, waving to the public on the monorail, etc.

There isn't much of me (and my interview was the only one not shown in the final clip), but I am 3rd from left at the front (0:24), and I am on the nearest seat to the camera in the 2nd row of the train when it comes back into the station (3:01). When the woman is interviewed about what she will tell her grandchildren, the torso and arm on the left of the screen is me too! (1:11 to 1:24)

I actually attended Alton Towers in May 2003 to ride "Air Bare", which was going to be "covered" by the Sun newspaper, but sadly the weather turned bad and the Sun called it off during the day. I got a free day on park, and a voucher to return again, but the Air event never got rescheduled.

So, it nearly happened!
