Well, Atari tech support can't figure this one out, it took an hour plus with them to no avail. The game crashes to desktop as it tries to load the first level of the game. Right when I choose easy or normal difficulty it has the "ok" option and one that is pressed it goes to the "loading screen", not 3 seconds later it crashes to desktop. All drivers are current, and I've tried looking for conflicts and we could not find anything. The only thing I can think of is my ATI Radeon 9800 pro card. What could be causing it to crash as it tries to load the level? I am on DX9.0b. 1.6, XP, 1024mg. The patch is installed. Any help. Even with all background programs closed this is still and issue. Anyone else have this issue or solved it?

Your problem sounds very similar to mine. Once I make the selections I see a somewhat fuzzy beginning screen, then I receive a general protection fault error and end up on the desktop. The suggestions received from Atari did not help. When I posted the prolem sometime ago, I got no help from other users. I'm just waiting for patch #2 to see if that helps.

Mac, sounds like I get the same error you do - after selecting Normal, I get a blurry startup screen that I cannot read and then the GPF below on my desktop. I had installed the first patch to get rid of a different GPF that occurred when I tried to load the product - at least this one is a different one. Maybe Atari should go back to console games, PC games do not seem to be their strength.
General protection fault!

I just replaced my video card - My old one was was only 32 MB, the minimum for this game, and it wasn't enough. I went with a 128 MB and it works fine. Not sure why Atari reps couldn't figure this out for you. I don't even need to do all the things they recommended, like closing running processes, etc.
Good luck!

Mac,
You were right, and Atari support actually came back to me and said the same thing - that I needed to upgrade my video card. I did so and the game works fine.
Thanks for getting back to me, have fun with the game.
