View Full Version : What GTA stole from Driver

If you think about it Driver 2 had the ability to exit a vehicle and "commandeer" another; in full 3-D!!! So in truth GTA stole the idea of having there next game in 3-D.... Yes you could steal cars in GTA 1 London 1969 and GTA 2 before Driver 2 but not in 3-D; So driver should, in my opinion get the credit for it.
It isn't just being in 3-D either; GTA VC ripped off the idea of creating a city-look-alike of Miami after Driver had created a more realistic copy of Miami.
I hadn't played alot of missions in the GTA's for PSX but I can say that their is a large difference; the missions in GTA 2 where not linear; as a matter-o-fact you could beat the game by destruction of property alone.....Driver is more linear; all three have good stories(even though a flashback perspective for D3 isn't to exciting but is gold to me). This leads me to another GTA theft; the idea that GTA stole the linear concept from Driver to give their game more intrique.
The truth is that I like both games but found more fun in the Driver series over GTA because of GTA's poor realism as well as vehicle physics as well as textures.
DRIVER ALL THE WAY!!!

what I think GTA truly stole was Driver's camera buttons (L2, R2, L2+R2)

god damn i know im going to get flammed for this. but actualy all gta games are in 3d...if you look at the buildings they are 3d squares and rectangles... the cars and peds are just 3d flats. its techniacaly a 3d world....but dont get me wrong I played driver and think its ok...but it wasnt great IMO but neither was vice...vice got old too fast. I never played driver 2 but i heard it kicked ass. but i am going to get drver 3 (ps2) and later on pc.

actually the only thing that was 3d was the buildings, trees and gates in GTA2, GTA1 wasnt 3d at all. The people and cars were just sprites if you didnt notice

Intrigue, you mean? And where do you get the idea the GTA is linear? GTA (both III and VC) are perhaps the most non-linear games currently out. Do you have to pick a specific mode for driving around? No. Does the game choose what order the missions go in, and you must go in that order to make progress in the game? No. GTA isn't linear; Driver is.

Well, at least I can agree with you there.
The idea that a game is COMPLETELY a rip off of another just because one had 3D before the other, well, I don't know how to put this easily, is a very stupid theory.
Ok, let see, just because one game used Miami, means another can't? What about movies that used Miami, I guess Driver can't use it now. Oh yeah, what about the first people that moved there, I guess no one else can move there because they'd just be rip offs of the first people.
GTA is not linear. Simply put. Well, not comletely linear, but mostly. Not completely linear in that you can't just skip to the last mission without doing the first ones. But of course its not complete freedom, because there are missions, and missions have guidelines.
I don't hate you, its just that you're coming up with any reason you can find to say that GTA copied Driver. I used to be the same way. If I could I'd go back in time and smack myself for it.
They're both good games in the areas they focus on, which happens to be different areas in both games. I happen to like driving and police chases more than driving people around in taxis, or delivering pizzas.
Dinner! I'll write more when I get back!

Saying that GTA ripped the 3D from Driver is an ignorant claim in-and-of itself. I am pretty sure the GTA guys were planning on making GTA 3d in the first place, but since the size of the city and the number of things going on at once was so large, the PS1 wouldn't have been able to handle it all in full 3d, so they went the top down approach where the idle half of the game would be 3d and the active half of the game would be sprites. I had the idea of GTA being 3d like a day after I played the game, so I can assure you the developers thought of it too. I will say that GTA did seem to rip the L2 and R2 look buttons, but that is about it.
And as far as GTA using Miami for Vice city and THAT being a copy from Driver... that's also just ignorant. Play the first GTA... notice the names of the 3 cities in the game, then notice that GTA came out first.
(For reference purposes the 3 cities in the original GTA were as follows: Liberty City, San Andreas, Vice City)
Here are links to the Rockstar games website for the original GTA giving details about each of the cities.

It was quite a good idea. :D Although, it was almost necessary because you could do drive-bys in GTA.
matt__jon

Could you do drive-by's in the original GTA? Or did that come later.

That didn't come until later, the only way you could do drive-by's in the first 2 GTA games you could go to a shop and get machine guns mounted on the front of your car. Seems like they wanted to implement drive-bys but couldn't do it the exact way they wanted to.

Yeah, I dont understand how people get away with calling Driv3r a GTA rip off (even reviewers). All GTA did was take Driver 2 and added guns and [barely] better graphics:haha: . And about how Driv3r hasnt "evolved" since the first; um, how has GTA "evolved"? It went 3D then just rehashed again for Vice. Even in 3D form, its almost exactly like the first two. Lots of gore, blood, blowing stuff up, nasty jokes, bad language etc. Wow, what a BIG evolution:rolleyes: . I think that the media are being hypocrits.

In certain ways, yes. The only thing Driv3r took from GTA was the guns, but if they didnt implement guns, people would whine and complain about it just like they are for the fact that theres no blood. And also the fact that the media makes GTA look like the holy grail for the same reasons that they hate Driv3r.

Dont start. Its just my opinion, big deal. You dont have to think that way. Yes, GTA did steal the whole 3D free roaming city from Driver. They could've kept the game unique and stayed with the top down view. And the media makes Driver sound like the bad guy in this. "Oh, the series hasnt evolved blah blah blah" while their little baby named GTA hasnt evolved at all except for what it stole from Driver. And Driver took the guns from GTA, so call it even. But if they didnt put guns, the media would chop their heads off for it.
Are you going to choke me through your monitor now?
GTA owns driver
06-23-2004, 10:38 PM
awwwwww keep crying. im glad gta "stole" from this knockoff driver game. They sure as hell made it alot better. From the first time i saw the commercial for driv3r, i laughed. ahhaahah. like that. ahahhahahaha. because they ripped off gta with the guns and i dont even really care, i just think its funny because this whole little feud thing. If you think about it, and really think about it, GTA is really a better game than "Driver"
Driver is so simple, and predictable. The swimmies on 'Timmy' AHAHAHAHAHA HAHA OH MY GOD THERES SWIMMIES ON HIM AHAHHAA. thats just Atari's way of saying, i know this game is gonna suck so ill make fun of the one who owns me. HA. dont cry DRIVERS! Im sure your game will be GREEAT. and you can see all the things that they stole from gta, and how much they made them suck :o go ahead and keep sucking GTA's balls. and who gives a **** about linear. get over it. GTAs miami was better than drivers. OH YEA MORE REALISTIC? cry.
oh, and no offence.... just my opinion:)

The only reason GTA had its unique view is because the PS1 couldn't handle a full 3d in the scale that the developers wanted. And Driver wasn't the first game to do a behind the car 3d view, so in a way Driver really didn't do anything special, they took different ideas from different games. And so you know, the top-down view was in GTA3 and Vice City... press select. But I could always say Driver ripped the whole free roaming thing from GTA then they ripped getting out of the car and stealing other cars in Driver 2 from GTA then the guns in Driver 3.

Hm, I wouldve never of guessed that you liked GTA, GTA Owns Driver. Your name is not obvious at all and it fits in really well in a board about Driv3r. What in the world are you doing here if you dont like Driver? Congrats, you've just won the "moron of the day" award!
I was never crying, I was just stating fact. I love the GTA games. In fact, I have GTA3 and Vice City on both PC and PS2, and I used to have GTA1 and still have GTA2 on PSone. Its just that I prefer the more realistic/gritty style of Driver over GTAs cartoon style mayhem (although both games are amusing in their own ways). Ok, so both games took elements from each other, big deal. That isnt even what I'm mad about. I'm annoyed at the media when they complain about stuff in Driv3r, but say nothing about the same problem in Vice City, even though the problems are worse in Vice City (like texture loading and pop up). At the same time, they give Vice City a way higher score than Driv3r. I sort of felt ripped off when I played Vice because it was exactly like the 3rd one except a new city. And the media complained about how Driver hasnt evolved. GTA hasnt evolved at all either, but they fail to mention that. Vice City is just a rehashed GTA3 with nothing new except indoor places. At least Driver has gradually gotten better. Driver 2 introduced car jacking and the 3rd introduced weapons. The first two GTAs were exactly the same, then they went to 3D (but were otherwise the exact same) and those two were the exact same. Thats fact and nobody can prove that wrong. I've played all the GTAs except for London 1969 which was just a GTA1 add on pack. I'm not here to fight, but you insisted, so I just proved you wrong.
Oh, and GTA isnt predictable? When I first saw previews for Vice City, I said "Just watch, the next one will be San Andreas" because Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas are the 3 cities in GTA1. Hm, I turned out right, whatta suprise. And the same goes for the actual games. You start a mission, watch a crappy looking cutscene with loads of cuss words, racist jokes, etc, then you go into a mission where you shoot someone/something to retrieve a briefcase or kill a gang leader. Then you beat the mission and someone else either gets mad at you or lets you join their gang, and the cycle goes through again.
I'm not saying Driv3r isnt predictable or that its has evolved a lot, but I'm just saying that you're being a hypocrite and I'm thouroughly explaining why.
BTW, Stuntman's metaphor is perfect for how I feel about Driv3r.

How in the world am I being a Driver fanboy when I have 5 GTA games and love them all? All I said is that GTA took the 3D (which is fact)! And I said that Driv3r took the weapons idea(which is also fact)!!
I'm not mad at you, Wheelman, just this obvious GTA fanboy who's just here to start fights and all the hypocrites bashing Driv3r while the game that they built a shrine for has the same problems.

I wasn't saying you were being the Driver fanboy, look at the guy who made this post. I just don't believe the GTA guys stole the 3d because if me at the age of 12 could have thought "This game needs 3d." I'm sure the developers thought of it too. There is like a 99.9% probability that GTA3 would have been 3d no matter what other games came out. But that is just what I believe.

Same goes for weapons in Driver 2. I was like "I wanna shoot people!" But the GTA fanboys dont want to believe that, so I just fired back with the 3D thing. I just cant stand hypocrites if you didnt notice already:D . I dont care what game, movie, etc or what reason, but I'll always fight against hypocrites!

Gta= Full of random violence, drugs, racism and fun in a cartoonish way.
Driver= More serious and straightforward story-driven driving game.

Both are great games, I remember when GTA 3 came out and it was the best game out! You have to give them credit for hyping it up, which they are good at. I loved vice city aswell and driv3r its just gta has a bigger fanbase ever since gta3 came out. I mean you can make a good game and all but that only 1/2 of what it takes, you have to hype it up and make people want to buy it. Just watch like a month before SA comes out, you will see advertisement everywhere! More publicity= bigger fanbase
Just my 2 cents
Both are lovely games.

who cares people.....all we know is that driv3r blew away any previous GTAs.
but now that those THEIVEs at Fockstar have driv3r to suck on, count on seeing some fimiliar items in SA....im also interested in seeing what Fockstar is gonna come up with in retaliation to the Timmy Vermecellis.
now "GTA owns Driver" you can go back to your Looney Toon cars, your Ken And Barbie style cities, your cussing, your *****s, and humping in GTA.
and btw Miami in driv3r is WAY more realistic then GTA will ever be...Fockstar will have to try extremly hard to outdo Reflections.
and I did like Vice City....but since then it was the only game of its kind...but now after playing driv3r....I will never touch another Fockstar game again. (im so glad my parents didnt let me buy GTA3 or Vice City)

I remember reading a magazine where they had pictures of real swimsuit models and High quality computer rendered models. And you had to guess which one's were real and which one's were generated. Man I couldnt even tell which was a render, they even had the little hairs on the arms and legs. I guess you could consider that real hehe.
Could you imagine the posibilitys? Gaming itself has come a very very very long way, just imagine it in another 10yrs.
