Greets all... just thought I'd make a little digest post here for any I-war classic fans...
I had a heck of a time getting I-war to run on my WinXP machine, but after reading MANY threads and applying a little common sense, this is what I've found. I'm posting all the little tid-bits in one post witht the hope that someone will stickie it for the 'old-timers' :)
Things to make sure of before attempting to run I-War:
1. You have the I-War 1.24 patch.
2. Your system's virtual memory is set to LESS than 512MB.
3. You have the latest Glide Wrapper.
Install the beast (I-War) and apply the 1.24 patch (don't bother with the patch if you have the deluxe version). Then install the Glide Wrapper and set it to these settings:
http://geek.pointclark.net/gliderwrappersettings.gif
***NOTE: These settings work for me, but you may want to start here and gradually apply more complex settings to get the most out of the game.
Then try to fire up I-war. DO NOT USE THE 'PLAIN' I-WAR ICON.
You have to use the "Independence War 3Dfx V2" icon.
If you have any other success stories, then please feel free to post them here. I'm not about to answer a TON of questions, so don't post yer woes here. I'm just trying to start a conversation about what you found that works. My next post will be the sources I found for the above mentioned patches and helpers.
Cheers,

P.S.: I still am getting the exit crash, and I don't really give a damn... LOL :)

Ahhh... so how did you feel when you finally got the game running? I only achieved this last night after 3 months of trying! (I didn't know about the <512Mb issue)
So... burning question: do you get that slight jumping forward glitch every few seconds as you fly your ship? Bearable, but noticeable.

My copy of IW/DE works pretty well on version 0.80 of the glide wrapper, with only a couple bugs (the crash on exit bug and a general lack of colored lighting), but it plays nicely.
One thing that i'm very glad the glide wrapper can do is the "try high-res" option in the 'resolution' menu, makes all the graphics except the hud elements and look very sharp at 1600x1200 :D

I actually squealed so loud that my wife came over to see what the commotion was all about... then she promptly left when she found out that it was ANOTHER computer game  ...ahh well, some people just don't understand... heh.

Nothing like that, sorry... but I'm sure getting ticked off at the old 'throw the cargo pod into the hopper mission'. The docking autopilot is NOTHING like the AP in EOC. It's more than a little rough around the edges.
FYI, My system specs are:
Athlon AMD 1400
750MB RAM
Nvidia Ti 4200 video
Creative Live Value sound
Logitech controlers including a Freedom 2.4 wireless joystick.
Hope this helps and thanks for the feedback!
Cheers,
Timex

Actually the docking AP in the original game is better - it can dock to moving and rotating objects, while the one in EOC has severe trouble docking to anything that isn't still.

Ha! There must be hundreds of parallel scenerios being played out across the world. That's *exactly* what happened with me. :haha:
"But dearest... this is no game. It's a portal to a superior meta-reality where we can transcend the parameters of our everyday existence."

I wonder............. :weird:
Maybe I should try the Deluxe Version of I-War? Or is that literally the standard I-War with just the 1.24 3DFX patch added? Does anybody know?
Thanks.

Hmm i play on xp and it works fine?
only wierd effect ive noticed is that if i dont load the game immediatley on boot. The cd drive seems to die.
But i copied the /movie files to the iwar directory to stop
that being a worry. Once the game is loaded it seems
absoloutley fine (we did have some slight slowdown in
the battle of mwari but put that down to the huge number
of ships on the screen).

The deluxe version has an additional 18 mission campaign, played from the indie side. It also has a slightly modified game engine that supports some extra features such as save points.

A little cute fun I have found is download the demo first to configure the system then load the actual game.
This may help the settings somewhat but I have found no problems on XP besides the patch.
I have seen this on other games such as Starlancer with XP.

On the backside? Meaning where the thrusters are located on a StarFury? That is good to know.

Could you please post the settings for the glide wrapper that's listed in the first post in this thread because it doesn't show up onscreen? Please see the quote below about the Glide Wrapper. Thanks.
