Don't know when it happend ;s
Quoting my Local News Channel
An 11 year old boy at Disney Land was in a deadly crash on the Big Thunder Road Mountain ride when 2 trains collided. The boy complained his neck hurt and they rushed him to the local hospital
So it was "deadly" but no one died

It wasn't a deadly crash. 2 people supposedly got neck injuries becuase 1 train hit another (lightly I'm sure).
RCT, cars traveling at 2mph still cause a fireball, even as big as one at 100mph

Haha true, you'd think the cars in RCT are full of landmines, with the slightest bump causing explosions.

You know as old as that ride is, I hear nothing but problems on that ride. However Space Mountain.....

Space Mountain -- you probably hear nothing, as it's been closed for quite some time for a total makeover -- it's due to reopen in 2005 in preparation for Disneyland's 50th anniversary.
As for the RCT exploding coasters -- is it possible they were made on the same assembly line as the Ford Pinto?

I can't wait to see the new Space Mountain. I bet it's gonna be off the hook even more!

rumors are that they are changing the ride for more scenery but most likely it will be close to the original one. i know from my sources at disney world engineering.

I've been on 3 of the Space Mountain versions -- Disneyland, Magic Kingdom, and Disneyland Paris -- and I really liked Paris' version the best by far. I think it'd be wonderful if they'd do something like that in California, but I suspect that what phoenixhazard indicated is true -- it'll probably be close to the original, but spiffed up a bit. With a goal of sprucing up the park for the 50th anniversary, I would guess that they'd be looking to give an historical look to the park, showing it in a fashion similar to what it looked like 50 years ago. (Of course, Space Mountain wasn't there when the park opened, but Tomorrowland was, and I could see where they might be trying to modify Space Mountain to look like it would have been a good fit in the original Tomorrowland.)

This sounds brilliant! Any news of any other Disney attractions? Tower of Terror at MGM in Paris?, Expedition Everest? etc...:)
Is it me or is this old news about Big Thunder Road Mountain? or is it a second accident 'cos I remember an accident on it about 6 month ago!
Harpo

This accident is new -- it's the 3rd publicly-known accident on Big Thunder at Disneyland since September 2003. The first was the big accident where a wheel assembly fell apart and one rider was killed. The second involved bumping of two empty trains as the ride was being "rebooted." Now, there's this one, involving a bump between two loaded trains.

On Space Mountain, I read that they are taking out the old track layout and putting in brand track that follows the same layout. Also, there are new cars with the speakers and music always on, and they are changing the scenery as well.

Well, I DO work in the auto industry! ;)
Besides, bad jokes are my specialty. Now, if I could only figure out how to make money off of that......
Space Mountain in Paris is a launched looping coaster. It's really a neat ride!

In case this wasn't made clear... Local news is reporting that there were three injuries, two adults and a 10 y.o. boy... Treated and released for neck and back injuries....
...me thinks BTM is destined (sp?) for the scrap heap soon.....
ColonelSandurz
07-09-2004, 03:32 PM
I seriously doubt they would scrap it...they just need to refurbish it...
Harpo
07-09-2004, 03:32 PM
If they keep having these accidents, Disney might not have any choice but to scrap it, as it'll hurt their reputation and people will start being afraid to ride it. It would be unfortunate, since, from the sounds of it, these accidents could have been avoided with training, and Big Thunder is a good ride. If the message isn't getting through, maybe Disneyland needs a new training manager, or that ride needs new supervisors.
(I have to admit, when I went on Big Thunder a couple of weeks ago, I was watching carefully to see what, if anything, was about to go wrong! That's the type of reputation problem Disney really doesn't need!)

It'd be hilarious if the cars on, say, a bobsleigh coaster flew off the track and instead of exploding, mowed down guests as it shot across the ground....

Well you could always drop him in water before he leaves the park, and nobody will ever see him again or ask what happened...

There was a crash a couple of months ago at Disney World on Big Thunder Mountain when a man was killed.

Space Mountain's refurb consists of new track layout, new track, new theming objects, new cars, new soundtrack, and new special effects. It will open July 17, 2005 as part of the 50th (as you all know).

Also, as far as the BTM crash, a coupling broke between two of the cars (the second and third to be exact) and the back part of the train hit the front part, very lightly though. People complain of neck injury (whiplash) was very minor, not to be rude but they are probable trying to set up a lawsuit against Disney. Whiplash has to be at least 20+ miles an hour I think.
Most of the problems are due to failing computer system that controls the block brakes. After the first big accident DOSH demanded a reboot and Cast Members are sometimes required to operate the coaster 'blindly'.
I am not 100% on all of this but thats what I got out of the DLR Press Release.

Stricktly hush hush.......He doesn't need to speak, nobody needs to know. We just cary out the plan, and drop him into the water. And then CRISS CROSS, the job is done....

I've heard "a few months sgo there was a crash and a guy died...:D
Joking!
But I wouldn't want a carriage to bump into me no matter how slow it was going. I was on a log flume last month, and it got stuck at the top of the last section with a big dip. The next carriage was approaching behind. I was thinking....
"What if we drop down now, and the next carriage follows us down?"
It would hit us as we stopped suddenly in the water! Whiplash, and back injury is likely. Also though, shock! Actually I am scared of heights, so this was all magnified in my mind.

I visited Disneyland the year it opened, and every yearafter that for the next 15 or so--have not been back since then.
E tickets and paper tickets for everything. Even then it was a magical place like no other.
lol, I can remember a time I was at Valley Fair in Minisota. I was with my younger brother and we went on The Wild Thing. He couldn't buckle his seatbelt and he is "quite skinny". The bar was big enough for me and not enough for him. I remember going up the hill and dropping down and watching him flying up in the air atleast 1/2 foot off of his seat (or so it looked like it), and remember myself pulling him down.

I thought there was a corkscrew in there as well? Indiana Jones at DL Paris was quite cool too.

I think there is -- I just mentioned "looping" in the generic sense, to indicate that it has inversions.

Disney better clean up their act with maintenance! I won't ride em till they do.www.savedisney.com (http://www.savedisney.com)
Harpo
09-10-2004, 12:41 PM
Actually, the issues have really been more about employee training and following procedures than about maintenance. Such issues could be due to inadequate training, or it could be due to inadquate discipline when someone fails to follow the procedures, or due to insufficient supervision to notice that someone is failing to follow the procedures.
Regardless, I certainly expect better than that from Disney, and I find it quite surprising that they're having such problems. They really do need to get their act together and address these problems before any more incidents happen. Once is merely a slipup and can happen anywhere, but they've had 3 separate incidents on the same ride within much too short a time period. That indicates a fundamental flaw that must be fixed.
