View Full Version : [OT] Kohan II, Dawn Of War, Rome: Total War...oh my!

Ouch, my aching wallet and fiscal situation.
Three hotly anticipated RTS games all within two weeks of one another. I just bought Kohan II and am loving it so far, having never played the first. Loading times are insubstantial - literally two or three seconds between levels  I just can't figure out how to get my units to disengage from combat yet, which is somewhat annoying.
Dawn of War comes out here on Friday - being a Wh40k nut from way way back in 2nd edition days, I'm eagerly anticipating this one. I was in the beta and played the demo, so I know this is going to be good.
Then, we have Rome: Total War. Needless to say, the Total War series is quite the delicacy for all us armchair generals. With the inclusion of a greatly improved strategic map, this is also set to be a winnar! :bulb: Bets are on one of these three games getting RTS of the year (or game of the year even).
I'd love to get some feedback on what you people make of these games so far! :)

dawn of war doesnt get my vote. it does nothing new. my rts tastes dont include the total war series, fine war simulations, but i liked yuris revenge. and that had ufo's. id pick dow over r:tw.

Right now I'm knee-deep in undead in the Cormyrean Nights module for NWN, so I'd have to pick 'none of the above'. :)

I'll probably end up getting Dawn of War.
I absolutely loathed Kohan I, so I won't be getting part 2 unless it's an incredible improvement. Part 1 never gave you freedom to choose how to attack, you always had to do things the way the game dictatated (which was usually painfully hard)
No interest in Total War series.
Total War is friggin awesome.
But its not an RTS & should not be lumped in with those abortions.
Its turnbased strategy that goes to dynamically generated realtime tactical battles.
Don't forget Nexus, due out early November at the latest.
Kohan II = RTS GAME OF THE YEAR !

 :D
Your quite right about Total War, hoom, its not an RTS. Apologies for that. I wouldn't call Kohan II or Dawn Of War abortions though :sour: They are good games in their own right.
And Nexus should also be quite the game, hopefully :)

My mistake. I confused Kohan with Kessen there. Kohan wasn't a bad game, but nothing groundbreaking. I hope the sequel is better.
Well I'm not singling out any particular RTSes but since I started playing Shogun:Total War, I've had little tolerance for the general crapness of nearly all RTSes.

if you cant build a base, at least 4 different kinds of turrets and set waypoints from factories, im not interested
How about pulling off a breathtakingly daring charge from a hill with your outnumbered army of 800, breaking the morale of the 6000 enemy & making them flee for their lives right into the maw of your elite, flanking cavalry?
And all with only a few clicks of the mouse

Heh, I must admit I remember the Battle of Agincourt from M:TW. Rather than play it the historical way, I sneaked two units of Heavy Cavalry around behind the French army, and then charged their King from behind. Their army broke, and I mowed them down with longbows.
Probably not very realistic, but boy was it fun. :)

Rome is out now :D
Unfortunately I have yet to be paid (monday probably), so I'm currently deciding whether or not to dig into my visa to get it today...

I love mine, too :D
<screams in exasperation>
There are so many huge improvements in Rome :D
But the gods are strange, they giveth & yet also they taketh away.
They munted the camera/controls (Medieval had great camera/controls)
They seem to have not added in combat system fixes that were patched into Medieval
& backbreakingly, last night my 20 unit army lost a siege by 10seconds (ridiculously short battle timer for a battle with over 3000 people) resulting in about 2000 high quality troops dissapearing outright :sour:

The dawn of war demo refused to load on my system, which probably influenced my decision.
