What do you guys think about this one?
Red Alert 2 didnt have it. Not sure about generals but it was a lot of fun without it.

I personally really dislike Fog of War i wish it did not have it i think it makes for slower paced games. Generals did have it. Red Alert 2 was in my opinion one of the greatest games ever made, the graphics are not awesome but the gameplay and speed and tactics is what made it awesome i feel the Fog of War will slow everything down

If I remember correctly, Generals had fog of war except if you used the US Sattelite upgrade, right? I think fog of war is essential in a "realistic" RTS game. If the game wants to allow for the use of sattelite tech, UAV and that sort of thing thats fine, but the "fog of war" is a realistic issue in any real battle.

But this is not a realistic game. Besides why do you want to play a realistic game. We could use some people in the army, if you want to play with realism ;)
I think games are good without too much realism.

My understanding was that Eugen had hired some military specialist types to add a degree of reality to the game. I read it somewhere, but I dont have time to look right now.
I'm planning on joining the military right after I get my masters. Not to fight, of course. Biochem.

haha just got pwned
im sorry i didnt mean to sound retarded.
but i just dont want the game to be slow. i like it fast paced, and active. i mean building bases is fun but whats funner is destroying them.

Fog of war is a necessity in the RTS genre.. if you have a view of the whole map then why would there even be the need for more than 5 various units.. all it would turn into is defend, counterattack then repeat until someone gets the upper hand.
Can anyone imagine Generals without fog of war, what would be the purpose of the Gla tunnels and launching a nearby sneak attack. As gaming moves forward some innovations will be good and used, and some will also be destined to fail and never be implemented again, Fog of War is not one of them.

Red Alert 2, Yuri's Revenge, Tiberian Sun all at there times were considerd the best rts out at the moment and none of them are fog of war, i think fog of war made generals lame, you cant just "see" the whole map you have to scout it first, and you can anti scout. Yes as gaming moves forward things need to change but Fog of War leades to turtling. How does fog of war lead to using only a few units, in Red Alert 2 as allies you have to use many different units and its not fog of war

When I speak of fog of war I mean complete blackness of the whole screen, not the fog or view range that's revealed as your units move alone.

So youre saying the screen should be black at all times?

As much as I hate Fog of war a RTS that lacks any kinda "fog of war" also lacks any kinda challange.

Traditionally fog of war refers to the gray that envelopes a previously explored area of terrain when you're units or buildings are not within visual range of that area. If you left this fog of war out of a game, the game would be officially retarded. That ESRB or whatever would have to put a warning on the box that simply read "retarded". You can't play an RTS without fog of war.
Whether or not the terrain should be revealed or not without manual exploration is debatable. I think it's more fun when it's not or at least requires an upgrade to get it fully revealed.

well yes of course the map shouldnt be "clear" it should start off all black but once you explore an area it should stay visible. Fog of war i think is horrible.

I mean you got an incentive to be aggressive right from the beginning. You say to yourself, if i let him see my base then hell know what im doing so I need to block his scouts. Its more fun that way. I mean, imagine fog of war in C&C. Freakin engineers raping your ass like nobody's bizness.

Nope not black as that's not fog of war.. terrain detail should be visible as it is in Act Of War.. but once explored it shouldn't be always visible like it is in other games of the genre.

None of the C&C games until Generals featured fog of war, and I wouldn't call them 'retarded'. IMO, it's just another way of playing the game, not necessarily better or worse, just different.
I think the best solution would be to have selectable settings when starting a multiplayer game. Map could be set to explored/unexplored, and fog of war to on/off. That way everyone would be happy.

Hi,
Well why not give option to have it or not.
So people who like it will be happy and other who don't like too.
And offer this option ONLINE too.
And player can see if they are this option ON or OFF and decide to stay to play in this room or not.
Have nice day !

Fog of war as said before is a natural part of the RTS genre. However if you look back at games like RA2 they did have fog of war until the airbase was built which gave a radar system thus making it realistically reasonable that you would be able to see the map. I think that a satellite system should be used along with a secondary fog of war system that is only in effect when the player has yet to purchase satellites.
