View Full Version : New Music Video Released - Thriller

OK I'm really excited about this project... and this teaser video aims to show a little of what I'm working on. It's very much a follow-on from finding out about the particle effects, but it's still in the experimental stages and so I would urge anyone to exercise EXTREME CAUTION if they try to figure out what I did... I don't fully understand myself.
RCT3 crashed so many times trying to get this footage... and as you will see, it is so chilling that it even bleached the camera film. I will post my findings once the project is over, but for now, download the teaser video, and don't have nightmares...
DarkSim's Ghost Teaser Video (http://users.aber.ac.uk/jch3/rct3/ghost teaser.wmv) (3.8Mb)
Special thanks to Foo-Foo (my brother) for ideas.
UPDATE: Well, the finished product is here, and it sure was a fun project! I hope you'll all enjoy the show!
Turn out the lights, curl up in front of the screen, and watch DarkSim's Thriller (http://users.aber.ac.uk/jch3/thriller.wmv) (50Mb)
Special thanks must go to:
Bitter Jeweler, for help launching my venture into RCT3 videos.
Simbolism, for showing the true beauty of this game, especially with his Frightmare park.
Milkdud, for ideas for the coaster (from Wooden Stake).
cstrfrk at www.jonseitz.com/rct3d for the fog effect.
Vodhin, for telling me about the invisible track trick.
Mikeyca, whose ride videos are amazing.
Klinn, just because his Agent Peep video was so enjoyable and kept me going!
And many more here in this great community! Keep creating...

let me guess...you took peep body parts, converted them into .frw. Then using the mix master collored them white!!

That was by far the most strangely inticing video I have ever witnessed on these forums. I like the idea of using the particle effect to create new possibilities, but not to twirl white peeps with no heads in front of a building. But hey, that's just me!

That was ummmm... "intresting". Whats up with the peeps and the Reincarnating Soon???????

what ever floats your boat! I personally thought that was awsome. Frontier never would of thought of that:cry:

I think he used a peep body in .FRW format and used the APE to make it white and float at you... like a ghost..
nice work!!

I actually thought that the creepiest part of the whole thing was the Genetically Modified Films logo! Especially along with the music.
I will post my findings once the project is over
BOOOOO! How could you do this to us? :(

Wow, so weird. I though the thing was edited actually.
I'm not sure how you can convert peeps into frw's though. It looks like they're on a standup coaster with the settings adjusted so you don't see the coaster iteslf. (it seems like that because of the lights.)

Well, if it's got Donnie Darko music as the soundtrack.. it better be good! :D
LightWarriorK
02-14-2005, 12:18 AM
I don't think it was the APE.....
The "ghosts" and the lights seem to be... from Stand-Up Coasters on the outside and Inverted Coasters on the inside...
But... how then did you remove the coaster cars, the coaster tracks the supports and the peep heads??? I must think it has to be an edit to the actual files.
I'm confused... but wow, waiting for more!
Vodhin
02-14-2005, 12:38 AM
Lower the draw distance of the coaster and supports to the lowest setting... Keep your peeps at the highest.
Not sure, but I think he also super-imposed several shots and set the colors to high contract B&W. Why there's no head on the peep is unknown to me...
Nice effect, though. Remindes me of Poltergeist.

Hmmm... I've been playing with the fireworks editor a LOT, and have done a few effects of my own. You, however, have definately kick things up a notch. Good job!!! That was a very eerie effect. I'd love to have a hint as to how you did it. I wonder if it's at all related to the posts you and BitterJeweler have made concerning the particle effects.
Great Job!!! Can't wait for a little more insight.

If interested, see Inspiration Park (below) for my latest FX fun.. ;)
BTW.. (almost forgot) I just saw your jumping fountains!!! Way Cool!!! (and thanks for the compliments in the "APE is Awesome" thread) I'd love a closer look.. Yours look a little more like real water... I'd LOVE to know what particle you used.
Keep up the great work!!!! Can't wait for more. :noob:

Fabulous job! LOVED the dance sequences :D and I loved what you did with the zombie hands literally exploding out of the ground. The headless ghost peeps were great as well.
I do have to say that I was a bit sad that you replaced the Donnie Darko soundtrack from your trailer. I was VERY much looking forward to hearing THAT as your spooky soundtrack. Ah well. Fantastic nonetheless! :D

im not too sure how spooky you could make a RCT3 video... but it was VERY cool the way you made things invisible n' such. Very cool indeed. I'm afraid to mess with my files for fear that I will break my game:rolleyes: but if i could do the things u do i would haha. great job darksim

Oh...my....gosh.....
That was the most amazing, most stunning, most...most...cool video I have ever seen! OMG! THAT WAS AWESOME!
Those sychronized dance sequences were jaw-dropping! All the special effects were perfectly done. Just, OMG!
Now as you promised you HAVE to tell us how you did all those things! The dances, the decapitated peeps (I knew they were on invisible coasters but dunno how you got them white and decapitated)...and everything else!
Oh, and the park was named Neverland! ROFLMAFAO!!!!

Much attention has been on the video, particle effects, invisible cars, headless peeps - all of which are simply **WOW** and a ton of fun to watch.
I did want to mention I really enjoyed riding the roller coaster. I haven't downloaded coasters people have made, but the ones I've been on via CoasterCam have usually been painful. The coaster either snaps your neck, or a hill crest is taken too fast sending you flying into space. Your coaster was fast AND with smooth transitions.
So we have a great vid and a great coaster in the same movie. An amazing accomplishment.

This video uses the most extensive effects in game (and out) I've ever seen! Great job!
And to think I thought Everlong seemed gothic... this is just plain scary! I really like the castle scenery and all. I simply CAN'T building indoor roller coasters or ones that go by cool scenery, and am jealous at whoever can. I'm jealous at you!
"Thriller" by Michael Jackson? This is the only mention on his name I've heard for months that doesn't follow with insults!
By the way, what movie editor do you use for your films?
VERY, VERY good job! I look forward to more videos by you!

.Oh my god. That was awsome. How did you do the dancing. I've tried to make my peeps dance but I can never get the cheat to work. Great special effect, video editing, music, and the lightning added a great touch! 15/10!!!!!!!!!!!!
CK the Fat
02-25-2005, 08:40 PM
The "dance" was just the peeps doing their sway thing when you pick them up and move them around, then set them down. DarkSim just made the film go forward and backward so they did a certain motion more than one time, like a dance. You can tell by looking at the gargoyales spitting fire, how it goes out and then is sucked back up! Good effect, though.

Thank you all very much for the kind words! This was such a fun video to make, and there were actually very few editing techniques needed! I guess that's testament to how much RCT3 actually lets you do solely with the game. For example, the teaser was actually one continuous shot with a black and white effect added. As for the headless peeps... I'll come to that later!
As CK quite correctly observed, the dance sequence was played forward and backward in time to the music. Milkdud got the "Neverland" reference, and there are a load of subtleties in there as well, especially with reference to the original "Thriller" video. See if you can spot them...
Thanks to TheProfessor101 for the coaster compliments! I always take great care in designing my coasters, and I'm glad it hasn't gone unnoticed :) I'll share the track if there's enough interest - unfortunately I had too much footage to include in the 6 minutes, so there are still some track sections which are unseen!
I think I'll post a separate thread/tutorial for the headless peeps, because it involves manipulating the .ovl game files, and can cause your game to crash on startup (so please don't try it unless you save backups of any files you intend to change! Don't blame me if it goes wrong! [/disclaimer]). I actually wanted floating torsos, which I could see in the peep designer, but as soon as the park loaded up, it crashed. Aww :(
Once again, thanks for all the enthusiasm and support. I wouldn't have made it if it wasn't for all the interest shown here! You're all a part of this video too!
Keep creating!
PS: mikeyca - the Donnie Darko music was nice and creepy, but I'd already planned out my video to Thriller. I think the DD music would be better suited for a ride video. Are you up for it? ;)

Absolutely Wonderful
Being on dial-up, I can tell you that I am honestly glad that I spent the time to download that video. Great use of particle effects and the overall theme behind the video. Timing was superb, scenery was well-designed, one of the best videos I have seen on these forums lately. Keep working on great projects like this! Can't wait for what you have up your sleeves next.

Wow! I finally got around to seeing this. What an amazing video you've created!!!
So many cool elements, many of which have already been mentioned, I'll just add one more: I loved the exterior shot of the lab housing the monster animatronic. Seeing the light of the electric arcing flickering through the windows provided a perfect bit of suspense leading up to the interior shot.
Like others, I almost lost it when I saw that 'Neverland' sign. :haha: Your effects are incredible and inspiring. I really must get into APE some time soon.
Excellent production.

Awesome vid... loved every minute of it... the dancing peeps were hilarious.
I can see how they came back headless... got hit in the face with some trees at pretty high speeds during some spots on the on-ride vid! I really enjoyed the 'spirit' particle effects throughout the graveyard... and the zombie hands 'exploding' from the ground was brilliant!
Loved it! Can't wait to see what's next!

That was awesome! The ride... the dancing peeps... and especially at the end with all the monsters coming out of the ground.
There was some clever stuff in there, dropping the peeps for dancing, cutting two scenes together to have the zombie hands appear. And uh... do I want to know what gave you the idea for the headless peeps? *Shivers run down spine*
Great vid! *Golf claps*
