What is retro you ask? The building for the Space Rings and Planetarium are retro. Laser Blast and the Motion Simulator are not.
Retro is the time period of the scifi of the 30's and 40's, when John W Campbell was publishing sci-fi. HG Wells War of the Worlds radio show is retro, the movie would be the period after retro (but since there is a lot of themeing from that particular movie, that is alright.) Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica are all modern.
Retro was what we thought space travel was going to be like before Werner Van Braun and the end of WWII when Space Travel started to be a reality.

After the first round of judging, I jotted down a few things that might be used as tips or suggestions to all future small park competitions. These are in no order other than how they came to me, and they can be used or ignored as entrants see fit. As a judge, these are just a few of the things "I" look for or things which effect "MY" subjective score that is given for the park.
1. Double check your park. Pull up the rides with the park options button and ensure all rides/stalls/facilities are open and ready for business. As a judge, we are just opening the park and letting it run for a year.
2. As mentioned above, we will not tweek the park in any way, so I would also recommend training your staff at least once. With patch 2, if a staff memeber has at least "some" training, they will not quit. If you do not train your staff, more than likey before the year is out, you will have a few of them quit. This could effect what your peeps are thinking, which will effect the subjective score if you have a lot of negitive thoughts.
3. Part of the competition is making a profit. IF you are not charging for entrance to the park, I've found that a good formula for setting a price would be to take the excitement + intensity and divide by 2.
4. Ensure you take care of your peeps basic needs. If at the end of the year you have a bunch of them needing a toilet or really hungry it will hurt your rating. A lack of these will also decrease your profit as peeps will just wander around and not be riding rides.
5. We are doing a themed competition, check to make sure the rides you put in place have correct themed entrances/exits.
6. Save your park before you test a new ride. Do this so the date will not progress. After you test the ride, you can reload the park and the date will be back to where it was before you tested. (This does bring up the question for DWWilkin, how about we let them have the first month to test coasters and such as long as the park is closed and no peeps enter?)
I'm just wanting to let you know some of the things that "I" look at while judging. Looking forward to seeing what this new competition brings. If it is anything like the last one, it will be good!

DCWill has some excellent ideas. You will see that I oopsed in my park because I forgot a toilet... (I wondered why ride usage was falling at the end of the year...) But as to designing and testing. Open your file and immediately put it on pause. Build some things. Save this with a different name then the previous save. Run your park. If you like it go back to the most recent save, if you don't go back to the save before that. When that opens pause right away again. I designed my whole park this way and got to the middle of day 2, so that is about 45 time clicks...
Testing of Coasters can be done with ghost cars if you have the game on pause. If you have the construction window open, a ghost car starts up your lift hill... Watch that it is kind of fun. I believe I am not sending out the file with the game cllosed and no advertising. If the entrants would like advertising and the park open, let me know. I had a problem in the design phase and 8 peeps snuck in the sandbox park while I built it. Having the park closed while you build it, in those brief clock ticks while you place the game on pause, will get those 8 peeps out of the park...
As to a free month, I am against it. (But I can be outvoted) Only because you can test your park all the way for the year before submitting. Build it, save it, then run it, and if you like it, send us the saved copy...

While I agree that rides can be tested to see if they are going to work right (coasters), peeps will not ride a ride if it has not been tested (and given the ride stats). If we have them just give us the park at day 2 without the rides being tested, it may take a little bit to get peeps to actually ride the ride and be the "testers" to see if it is safe. Anyway, this is my logic for allowing the month for getting rides tested and open for when we get the parks, but also the reason I said it was a question for you.

Ahhh, I seee... I noted when watching my park a slow crawl the first month as the peeps made their way to rides and then decided to go on them. If our entrants have built there park and tested the rides knowing that they will work and having goof excitement and intensity, then give us a version at a point saved before the testing process, as long as the ride is open, the coaster will test automatically and then peeps will go on it.
Another thought is to build your park. Start running it with the coasters in test (Park closed), then as soon as they complete a circuit, Pause again and give us the park... That would get peeps to the ride faster. But peeps do go on the coasters that go from the build phase to run phase...

In the scenario editor you can reset time. If entrants were to open their parks in scenario editor, they could reset the date (as long as no peeps enter). Or maybe I'm missing the point or something...not sure. Only problem with this is people could cheat and try to change the map or something. Just a suggestion...

The reason we want the time not to move is so we can tell how much it cost to build the park. While it would be just as easy to subtract money at start from money given, we do take out things such as training staff, salaries, etc. This give us an actual cost of money spend on building the park. The other goes into account of park/company value at the end of the year. Opening the park in the editor to save it does reset the date, but it also resets the money spent in the finance screen. Hope that is a bit clearer than pond water, as I just woke up :)

Do to some nasty virus that leaked to through my wireless network, my rct3 computer has crashed and I have to reinstall my OS. I was able to retrieve everything on my computer and I just need to install the os and copy it back on. Also these past couple days I've been busy with the interview and other things. Its calmed down some so I can start working judging for the last contest. I do have some good news and bad news. First off nobody except one form from dcwill has ever actually submitted it. I already did one before hand and I just need 3 more to go.
@ddwilkin please respond to the e-mails and would you like me to transfer the forms to you? I can have it sent to me to and kept as a backup. This way you will be able to firectly look at it and anounce the winner in the comming days.
The bad news: Do to plans ahead I do not think I will be able to judge for this one. Very sorry. I still will manage coordinating it though.
I need a firm answer on these as soon as you can so we can get the last compition out of the way and on to the next one!!
Cheers Tikitiki

A post to this thread, or a PM to me will get you included in the entrants list. It helps at the judging site if we know who has entered.
As of right now I have KoasterKid and WickedFan for sure. I have included all of our last entrants in the list, and we are open to many more throughout the competition.

Actually half of your score is based on a subjective rating from the judges. So scenery can count. To see an idea of some of the previous entries, look at the first Small Park comp... You can see that various entrants have provided scenery...
Good Luck...

ummm doesn't retro mean you can't use modern rides? Or did I get this wrong?

03-31-2005, 07:31 PM
The Motion Simulator would look out of place, unless of course it was hidden in its own building that looked retro on the outside. Think how Tommorland looked when it was first opened.
Star Wars is modern. Buck Rogers the serial is retro. Buck Rogers the series with Gil Gerard would be Modern. HG Wells War of the worlds was retro...
Hope that helps...

Sure you can have a modern coaster, but the presentation is everything... Think of other theme parks, it is hard to sometimes hide the new amongst the theme. Perhaps building the stratacoaster leaving a retro building, and going through scenery that was retro. If you look at my example park in the 1st competition, I have 2 coasters that are not Jungle themed, yet with all the scenery of the trees and bushes I think it fits pretty well.

I just came to think... I am building my park in the scenario editor... so money isn't used at all... but doesn't initial park value reflect money spent?
Well there's no point in changing now as I have made my three coasters and a nice haunted mansion ride as well...

The park should be built as a scenario... That is why the first post has a file to download...
I would save the rides and then import them into the scenario file.

Hey all,
Just curious to see who all is still in this competition?
It has taken me a little longer than I wanted to get a park done for this theme, but here is it.
Download park here (http://rapidshare.de/files/1140733/Small_Retro_Scifi_sub.dat.html)
After letting it run for a year, here is what I came up with:
Cost to build park: 51,000 (forgot to write down the exact)
Money at start: 46,125.92 (minus staff training from build cost)
Total $ at 10/31: 71,730.61
Profit: 25,604.69
Park Value at 10/31: 132,541.40
Company Value at 10/31: 203,272.00
Peeps at 10/31: 854
Park rating at 10/31: 983
Total excitement: 51.31
Average excitement: 3.95
I suck at fireworks, therefore this park has no firework show.

I'll take a look at this in the next couple of days, so this isn't a response to DCWill's overall park yet. But it would be interesting to se if Park rating, attendance and profit are affected by Fureworks shows and here might be the perfect opportunity. With so much attention paid to the AI issues of the game, here we can see what happens when we put a few of the shows into the park... That is something that I may indeed test this weekend...
Thanks DCWill...
Maddack
04-06-2005, 11:21 AM
I finished my park and uploaded it.
To see how much my park would cost, I tried selling everything, it made me $30,000. So my guess to what my park cost is $40,000 to $45,000 (based mainly on the rollercoaster that cost 11,500 to build and made 9,200 to sell... about 20% loss) including staff training. I only have 9 staff fully trained though.
As you can see I (deliberately) made the park such that it could theoretically be built in real life around 1980, the corkscrew coaster (more precisely: zero-g roll) is the most modern thing in my park.
Maddack
04-06-2005, 11:41 AM
Just took a look at DCWill's park and that one really rocks!
I really like how you made the buildings (I tried to fiddle with those curved roof blocks but didn't get it as nice as you did). You used the space a lot better than I did... Gave me some good tips for future parks, I hope to never mess with this retro crap again.
Two things I don't like are the Sky Sling (no retro there) and that block brake on rolling thunder... that is a MEGABOOST dude
DCWill
04-06-2005, 12:05 PM
Yeah, I kinda have to agree with the skysling, but it is one of those rides I just like putting in a park.....who knows why. I think it comes from the first senario, where the skysling is your friend. ;) Although if you look at the "seats" it is shaped like a little rocket, thus kinda fitting into the park.
The thing I forgot to mention about my coasters, they are all stock, that is they were prebuilt and came with the game. I noticed that about rolling thunder after I had it placed, and I figured that whoever built it had it that way so it would complete the circuit, so I didn't mess with it. As I'm judging and not actually entering, I didn't want to spend a lot of time on the coasters. I wanted to work more on the layout of the park, and on the buildings. While the buildings are not fancy, they did take a little bit of time.
Personally, I'm looking forward to the western theme. They just put more stuff in the game for that one.
DWWilkin, you might have a point about fireworks. Let me know what you find out.
**Edit** I just took out that block brake, it lowers excite by .01 and lowers intensity by .05, I can't figure out why it was put in there to begin with.....it does look (and work) a lot better without that major boost in it.
Maddack
04-06-2005, 03:44 PM
probably was meant to be an ordinary block brake before they made block brakes boosters (in 1st update I think). Now I see... the entire coaster is above ground level... nice.

It looks like someone is spending some money on raising the terrain.
Note from the first competition, spending all that 100K might be the way to go (actually 101K if you count the loan.) THe best you can do is get 5 points of the 80 for the lowest total amount spent. But if you spend a fortune on theming, rides, shops, terrain, and get the park and company value up, they each are worth 5 points of the 80 (or you can get 10 points if you spend the most but have the highest park and company values after a year....
Further the more rides and attractions, the more peeps. THe more peeps, the more money being spent (so 2 more 5 point categories to shoot for...)
I am just saying, things seemed to work out that way in the first competition...

Hi all, this time around we do not have as many entries as the last time... Is there something we should discuss.
I Know we get a lot of attention based on the stats that these competitions see, but somehow we are not turning that into entries, and I am at a loss. I think these parks are fun to do, the basic layout takes just a few hours, and then the finessing takes a bit more... I know we have no prize but they are all pretty cool parks...
I have been working on the website so everyone can see what has gone before. Is it Soaked taking away everyone's attention?

This was my first competition, and I thought it was nice because it doesn't take that much time and you really have to think about the layout. I personally am not going to buy soaked... I mean, waterparks? not my kind of thing...
What is this website? Put a link in the signature?
PS: more people might join a western or horror theme

Hey guys, I've been seriously busy from playing games, but I can try to make my entry today night (GMT) and submit it tomorrow, if its still applicable...

I think we should allow I feel sick to send in an entry still
As to the website, I am designing a website and then will be buying a domain and finding a hosting ISP. That is still being worked on. (My cool project at 6 am since I am so used to getting up at 5 for work, i couldn't sleep this morning was to work on rollover buttons. I am working on using 2 states of the entry signs from RCT3 for the buttons...)

Ok I have finished my park and uploaded it at the website given by DWWilkin in the first post of this thread... it doesn't give a link...
Here's an overview pic of my park called "A Sci-Fi Tribute"...

Hey all,
Note to Judges only:
Why not judges post a small review (just a few 2-3 lines) about the park while posting competition results, unlike the first competition where judges just posted the ranks, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and so on...
Just a thought, so that we can look out for the mistakes we made and learn from em...
Happy judging! :D:D:D

The judges actually did write down coments, I under pressure to get the anouncement of the winner out must say mea culpa, mea culpa...
DCWill did provide one of the best insights early in this thread about Toilets!!!
Now as we work through the judging of the entries for this contest, it is time to start the next contest going also. I think that the consensus was leaning towards Sppoky... As I hear your comments about that I will start designing the scenario file...
Thanks
David

Boooooooooo I am horrified!
One prob is if you make it rainy (and thunderous) coasters won't be popular.

That is true but it would be very interesting to see how others overcome that problem.
PS: Can't wait for the next competition! Spooky theme will hopefully help gain some more participants!

most rides (including spooky themed) are rain-unfriendly, hence that would mean only build merry-go-rounds to make money... on the other hand you're selling a lot of umbrellas

There are 2 scenarios, Fright Night and New Blood that are Spooky Themed. They both play out well. Another way to do things would be to put roofs over pathways and rides... Take the theme and build a castle???
Generic Rides are allowed in each of the themes we have done so far so the Dodgem Cars are covered also.
I built the scenario template last night so the contest thread will be put together tonight and the contest can start tomorrow (Or tonight if everyone is around when I get it up...) And as you start on the new contest I and the other judges shall work on the old contest...
Thanks

Hey all,
So it seems "Spooky" is the probable theme for the 3rd run...
Maybe we could put up a poll for the next theme, but where would we poll it... "General Disc" or "Competitions Disc"... Oh well, just a thought, whatever judges feel right :D:D:D
And as peeps don't like uncovered rides in rain.. would peeps mind if it was covered in a building (built indoors)... Haven't tried that or does someone know ?

One of those two scenarios had a big castle on a mountain, when I zoomed inside the castle I saw rain... hence roofs cannot be used (or does someone know something I don't?) to cover rides and coasters.
Just make the climate temperate or something is my suggestion. maybe it should be open only during night... like 9 pm to 2 am. THAT would be interesting.

Jsade. look at the 3rd competition. Retro Sci-Fi is now in judging phase. We might repeat Sci-fi but probably not until Soaked has arrived since we have several other formats to work thru first. We are currently doing Spooky...

AS soon as I get the final jidging from our judges, i can enter this into my spreadsheet and tabulate the results. Then I will announce the winner here. In the meantime we have entrants and parks being done in the 3rd competition, Spooky!

Judging
Here is a layout of the what we need to judge for competitions 2 and 3. I think at this point in time the best way to do this will be to open this up to all of the current entrants...
Don't judge your own park
I shall provide in the next few posts links to each competitions parks so you can download them
Then you can fill out the judging sheet and email me your results. You can PM me, or you can post your results in a post and I shall compile it. Perhaps if we want we can start a seperate thread for the judging (chime in please)
Here is the form and a link to the excel form I use:
Park Name
Entrant
Judge
##
# of Peeps in park 10/31
Park Rating 10/31
FPS 10/31 (rename a peep "FPS")
$$
Cost of Park
Remaining $$ (100,000- Cost of Park)
$$
Cash 10/31
Profit 10/31 (This is current cash-Remaining $$ from above)
Park Value 10/31
Company Value 10/31
# Fireworks (3)
# Shops
# Food Stalls
# Drink Stalls
# Other
Total of (18)
# Janitors
# Mechanics
# Security
# Entertainers
Total of (18)
## Excitement
# Coasters (3)
# Junior (6)
# Thrill (12)
# Gentle (6)
# Other Rides (6)
Total Rides/Excitement
Average Excitement
Subjective Rating 1-10
http://rapidshare.de/files/2572839/SmallPark.xls.html
to use the form, or send me feedback, we of course need your name, and the park you are judging. Take the financial readings
Then run the park, you can do this at FF until 10/31. Rename a peep if you want to award the optional FPS award please... Then record the other numbers. Some like # of staff and stalls is to ensure the submitted park is within the guidelines.
In each of the categories of rides add the total of those rides 5 thrill rides of average excitement of 3 each means 15 excitement points on that line. This is a validation to ensure that the numbers I have are correct.
The judging is 5 points for first place, 4 for second, etc in these categories:
Least cost of Park
Most Peeps
Highest Park Rating
Greatest Profit
Highest park Value
Highest Company Value
Highest Total excitement
Highest average excitement
and then the subjective rating which is worth 4 to 40 points. Your score of 1 to 10, times 4 is the value...
Any questions, please ask.
