Beware: the final game is subject to change and leave out features (as seen last time) so don't get too excited, but you can still hope for a good game.

The realation is Your an getaway driver evading cop and the road become just Parallell lines.
It likely could be the "Parallel Lines" of the road. Although-
The new subtitle "Parallel Lines" possibly could be a reference to the new open-structure missions, like the parallel lines of a story that branches out with bonus/alternate missions and multiple endings.
Or both.

I think the name is so lame, it could be called Driver: Amish Road Rage...

Amish Road Rage? What the hell is amich road rage?
I still think Driver 4 was better. But Parallel Lines, WTF is that suppost to mean? Why not Driver the wheelmans revenge, or Driver streets of NY (wait, no can't do that, thats based off of True Crime Streets of LA).

""
It's no secret that when the last Driver game came out, the game ended up being a major disappointment. Following the old adage, "If at first you don't succeed …", Atari has decided to "try, try again" with the development of Driver: Parallel Lines for the PS2 and Xbox. I recently had the chance to sit down with an early alpha build of the game, and admittedly came away surprisingly impressed by what's been done so far.
Parallel Lines is a brand-new take on the Driver experience. This time around, the game takes place in New York City back in 1978. The player takes on the role of an 18-year-old driver for hire known simply as "The Kid" (or TK). TK starts off as a young hotshot driver, doing nickel and dime jobs for anyone willing to pay his price. As the game progresses, The Kid earns his stripes as one of the best drivers in town, and starts to pull off some major scores for the criminal hierarchy.
To go along with the game's new story and characters, the developers went through a lot of effort to put together a totally revamped gaming experience for previous Driver fans. It's obvious that the development team took a long hard look at what went wrong with the last game, and corrected those problems for Parallel Lines. First off, the missions are no longer as linear as they were before. The game is generally open-ended (though there are a few key missions required to advance the story), and the player can choose not only which missions to take, but also how exactly to accomplish the goals. This time around, if a player fails a mission, he no longer has to restart the mission until he gets it right. Instead, if a mission isn't completed, the player can simply continue driving as if nothing happened and either find a new mission, or drive back to the start and try to complete his current mission.
This sort of seamless gameplay leads right into another big improvement in Parallel Lines: no load screens. Apparently, the game loads up missions as you drive around the city. While this may not seem like much at first, in reality it helps to create a truly immersive feel, as the player isn't taken out of the experience to wait for loads. And, this seamless gameplay is present in every aspect of the game. Mini-games can be started or abandoned at any time, and even multiplayer matches can be started from within the single-player experience.
Speaking of multiplayer, that's another addition to the Driver franchise: online support for up to eight different players. Parallel Lines is set to include a variety of different gameplay types. There's cops and robbers, in which one driver plays the part of the robber, while the other players try to chase him down in their squad cars. There's your basic racing mode, with players trying to outdo each other on the track. And there's even a team-based carjacking mode, in which the goal is to capture four cars scattered around the map and return them to your home "base." Think capture the flag, but with cars.
Other improvements made to Driver: Parallel Lines include an improved A.I. system, faster vehicle speeds, a roster of roughly 80 different vehicles, and the addition of a new garage feature. In the garage, a player can take money earned from mini-games and repair and repaint his current car, or add in performance upgrades to help improve his car's capabilities.
Graphically, Driver: Parallel Lines still looked a little rough around the edges. The models and animations were jagged and stiff, and there wasn't a whole lot of detail in any of the textures. Hopefully, this was because the game being shown was an early alpha build. If so, the developers should be able to clean things up substantially before the game's scheduled release in March of next year.
All tolled, Driver: Parallel Lines is shaping up to be everything that Driver 3 wasn't. The game looks entertaining and does a lot to draw the player into the story and the setting. If the development continues on its current path, Parallel Lines could very well redeem the Driver franchise, and even earn the series a little extra street cred.

Thank you for that link. This is great news. I think I would try to restart the missions anyway if I failed them, unless I drove a really long way and didn't feel like going back. This sounds so much better than D3 turned out, although D3 sounded good at first too (but not this good even). Of course, I will try to be skeptical, but I will probably end up getting this game anyway. Its my favorite game series from last generation, and hopefully they'll continue to make games. I won't be mad if they leave guns out, but thats a lot of time and work they spent on the last game to go back on. I'll update the first post. Thanks!

So they decided to make it like it was in 1978 movie The Driver and more and more like GTA. I will miss Tanner if they are going to do it like that. Tanner was like main character who cannot be killed. Maybe they sold all the rights to Tanner in to that new movie they are making, so game character cannot be Tanner anymore. But I guess that anykind of main character setup don't work so well in games. There haven't been many successfull game based main character which lasted more than two sequels, other than Driver series maybe? Lara Croft could be also successfull but I doubt it has been success all times. Preview link doesn't work anymore perhaps it means that they got wrong information about Driver 4 ?

It's possible that they might not be able to discuss the game until after it's presented, so they took it down. Not sure.

Wow, that's really good to hear.
I would imagine a lot of the features DPL boasts are going to be based on Atari's rather recent release of Test Drive: Eve of Destruction... Many of the game modes sound very similar, and the game engine really reminded me of some Driver series variation.
I think Atari is going to have to do a large amount of research and experimenting to make this game, and make it well. Online game play is a tricky thing for the PS2, and even more tricky for a company and a franchise that has rarely/never (for the franchise) touched upon it.
1970s licensed soundtracks would be a great compliment to the plethora of announced features, but I guess we can't expect too much of them.
All I have to say is ROCK ON ATARI for being so diligent in your efforts to revitalize a series that was almost dead.

No, I'm not, and I didn't intend to sound mean or anything, I was just telling you where the information was.
I mean, I didn't know that information was RECENTLY added... Try being in my shoes: I read the entire thread then saw your question about multiplayer... I mean, I just saw the answer to your question, and assumed you didn't pay attention to the article or something.
Thus, I answered your question in a rather obvious, dry tone, because I thought you (like many members on these boards) were just being ignorant. I'm sorry for my assumption.

Yes, at least one would be good. But more is better.
I live in the city, so we have a wide variety of vehicles. So 80 isn't much. Not to mention we have around 10 different kinds of planes flying over my house daily, and thats just the navy base.
Still an improvement over D3. I wonder if you will also have save garages. It would make sense, if you can upgrade a car and have to buy parts for it, that you should have a place to save it (if you drove it far enough to get back). Plus, we should have some cars that are more rare than others to make saving cars worth it. Not only will you have to unlock a hidden car, you'll probably have to drive it back to the house too.

About the TAR thing, I wonder if you'll get missions from the answering machine again? I always liked that. So far online play has only been confirmed for mini games, but since the mini games are accessed in TAR mode, and by the nature of it being online, everyone who's playings console will just draw up what they need and not what two players need, theorectically every aspect of the game could be played online, even TAR. Keep your fingers crossed.

Well, for one thing, they might have helicopters, police mainly. the dodo was a piece of crap, but they will defently not but airplanes in it. That wouldn't have anything to do with the whole Driver experience.
carlover325
08-18-2005, 04:04 AM
Somehow, I don't see there being any flyable aircrafts in Driver: PL. Atari said the game will be going back to it's roots, and planes and helicopters seem like things a wheelman would use. I could be wrong though, and that would be cool.
matt__jon
08-18-2005, 10:40 AM
I see no reason not to add planes, you may say its not gonna be like the original Driver, but the cars will be. They added on foot in 2 and no one complained about that (though they did complain the game was choppy and not as fun), and that has nothing to do with driving.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Atari have revealed the new Driver will be titled Driver Parallel Lines and be published on this generation consoles and PC. The game will be set in the 1970's in America with a new hero. There will be a 8 way multiplayer. No other details have been revealed.

some more
Revealed in deprived by Atari in Games Convention , the new Driver named Driver: Parallel Lines will be finally intended for the consoles of this generation, namely the PS2 and Xbox. On the technical level, the play seems similar to Driv3r; the action will proceed in the Seventies with a new hero, a new scenario with American. Even if Reflections goodbye seems to have said to the boats, one can control more than 80 cars in which it will be now possible to draw on your adversaries while leaving your gun by the window. The great innovation of this episode comes us from the playable online mode up to eight. After a DRIV3R very discussed by its performances, let us await the first official images now to know some more. Driver: Parallel Lines is planned for March 2006 in Europe.

Even More
After a third episode in extreme cases of indecent with respect to the players, Driver is on the point of returning in "a new" episode entitled Driver: Parallel Lines. Always developed in the studios of Reflections Interactive for the account of Atari this episode should include as bases the precedent with new a scénar and improvements what is clearly not a good predicts.
It is at the time of a presentation deprived in Game Convention of Leipzig that the play revealed after being more or less announced with the E3 last. The people having been able to attend this presentation report that the play will be playable online with 8 for the first time, that the solo mode will take place in the Seventies and that one will be able to draw while rolling to the manner of immensely awaited 187 Wrinkle gold Die.
The play is awaited for March 2006 on Xbox and PS2. Enfin "waited" is not the term, "envisaged" is adapted much more; -)

[ Infos ] Driver 4: Parallel Lines! (MAJ)
August 20, 2005 with 12h48 by Thibaut
Information circulates since a small moment on the anglophone forums, next Driver would be entitled Driver: Parallel Lines and will leave on PS2 in March 2006, not of Next-Gen at the horizon, at least initially...
As had announced it Atari in E3, this fourth episode must mark the true return to the sources, keeping best of the two first opus which made the success of the series. If the first infos appear rather thin, it is murmured however that the intrigue would proceed in the years ' 70 and that finally a Online mode to 8 would be part!
The official magazine German Playstation reveals moreover than the hero would be a 18 year old young person called The Kid, than a new system of aiming would be of exit, than mini-plays would be part, than it would be possible also to draw on board the one from the 80 vehicles available, customisables of surcroit!
Where the pack wounds, it is that the bâteaux ones were withdrawn, but especially that famous "the return to the sources" promised in E3 should not as obvious as be discounted insofar as aspect AWG will be always present and that the play uses the same strings as Driv3r .
Wait and see...

For anyone that doubted the French translations, heres an article in plain english that confirms drive-by shootings and a lack of aquatic vessels:
At the Liepzig Game Convention Atari revealed the official title of the newest game in the Driver franchise. Driver : Parallel Lines will be released on PS2 and Xbox, scheduled for March 2006. In ParallelLines Atari goes back in time as the setting for the game is late 70's, New York, where you play a young criminal named The Kid. Reflections seems to no longer be using the boat, but there will be about 80 other vehicles in the game, and you will be able to stick your gun out the window, and shoot while driving. Racing will take up 80% of the game, and the remainder are the on-foot missions & minigames. Unilke Driv3r, Parallel Lines will have various online multiplayer modes for up to 8 players.

Reflections forgot to tell us about the miles. Will there more miles than in driv3r? I would really love to see all of New York to drive in. Imagine if it had all of New York. It would likely mean that the missions would probably be all over New York. There would be so much to do. I hope that the missions, the miles, and the story are bigger than their past driver games.

DRIV3R was not a disappointment to me. I LOVE it! I've played through and won it so many times that I know every word in all the cutscenes. It is a fabulous game!!! I still hope that there will be a future `Driver` game in which Tanner either lives or dies after the shot from Jericho. It would also be cool to play as Jericho!

I have never said anything bad about Driv3r, and I never will. I thought Driv3r was a great game, and I still do. Although, the cities can get somewhat boring because there isn't much to do. The glitches I didn't find so bad, because they never actually effected the gameplay in my game. Driv3r was great, but Driver: PL will be even better. :) :D

Looks like Reflections have been listening to the forums, back then we were talking about online and about how the characters should hold their weapons, kudos to Reflections.
However, in the scanned pictures posted, i am worried that the cars are getting shrunk in size and detail.I understand to increase the activity up to a level of a busy living street, there have to be a sacrifice, i hope they can mantain the car sizes or even better improve the details.

What?! I said that you people bi*ch about it, except carlover325, I could care less if people hated games that I liked, my friends don't like racing games, but I don't complain about them not, and where the hell do you get of with me saying people like me and have to agree with me, 1: The day I registered no one has agreed with me, 2: NO ONE IS FREAKIN LIKE ME! The last thing I want is everyone to be like me. As a matter of a fact, everybody hates me, so how can people who hate me want to be like me.

Driver: Parallel lines is coming out 3/15/06. They say that they are not calling it driver nor driver 4 because they feel that driver has been put to the next level. Atari has not yet said if driver parallel lines will be coming out for the new systems so there's still a chance, who knows. Ok well for one thing no more tanner, you have guns and you can shoot out of the car like true crime, also driv3r could only handle 8 to 10 cars on screen as traffic, well driver: parallel lines can hold up to 20 to 30 cars on screen, the cars can be stored, upgraded and you could choose anyone of your cars for any mission. And yes you could save your cars. You will see cops chasing other people and fire trucks and garbage trucks running there route, and they said that there this one thing where a guy is at the top of a building and going to jump and the cops are at the bottom trying to stop him. And you don't have to pass every mission u can save it and go on so thats good. Also Reflections is trying to get Downloadable missions and so can save them on your memory card but right now this may not make the final game.
And some of the mini games are back, heres the list:
Survival- (Also online)
trailblazer- (Also online)
Quickchase- (Also online)
Race tracks- (oval, drit, and street)- (Also online)
Destruction derby- (Also online)
Online list:
Survival
Circuit racing
Cops and robbers
Capture the flag (team based)
Cars also go real speeds and everything can get knock over, like when you hit a light pole in driver 3 your car would take damage, but in driver parallel lines if you hit the pole at a right speed you will take damge and the pole will get knocked down. The AI has gotten way better plus there only working with one city this time so they could add more into the game. Atari is also hiding something big about the game but they won't tell anyone about it yet.On 9/6/05, egm.1up.com will have extended details in there site as an extra for this issue. All this info is from there latest issue October #196. There you could find screenshots of the game. I dont have the issue, this info is all from Reckless. I just summarized it from another thread in clear and understandable text into one post here at the FAQ. Reckless cant get scans right now so dont ask. I do not have a scanner but once i get the issue I'll give you a full report. I'll try to upload scans in one of my friends house to post them here. So if you have questions ask Reckless not me and I hope your as excited about this game as I am. Peace and enjoy.

I think this big "gameplay changing" thing is most likely snow that builds up on the ground. People have been asking for it for years, and now the games set in NY.
Of course, in these situations, its best not to think about it as most of the time these "things we're keeping secret that changes the gameplay completely" end up sucking balls

Yeah, I think I remember hearing once that the real NY city has 6000 miles of roads, which is quite rediculous, so I don't blame Reflections for making the city smaller than in reality. It is just a game, most games these days are based too much on realism, even I wanted absolute realism in a game at a time, but for one things thats way too much research and work to be profitable, another is thats not that fun to play.
Imagine playing a realistic GTA, for instance. You have a gun, and you go to shoot someone, and when you press the button, you hear the character thinking "Its not right to shoot innocent people", or if you're driving and you're mashing the gas pedal, and the car stops accelerating at the speed limit and you hear the character think "I should slow down or I'll get a ticket" How would that be fun? Thats what realities like, haven't we all had enough of reality?

Its too hard to tell. If someone who feels like it can get comparison pictures, please do. I gots schoolwork
Pic 10 is some kind of Euro car, driver is on the right side, you can tell by the scoop behind the driver
Pic 9, the brown car and grey car (one we've seen before), looks like a combo of Mustang and Hemi Cuda, with Camaro lights
Pic 7, dark blue Caddilac on left? and Mustang in front of grey car? Also looks like a red GT40 up the road sideways
Pic 11 Plymouth Duster???
Pic 12 yellow car is it a Studebaker?
Pic 13, looks like we have convertible and hard top versions of the Vette maybe?
Pic 14 no clue
I won't add them until I'm sure. I'm not even sure about the ones already on the list. The one I talked about in pic 9 looks like its the shape of the Stang of D3 (all those curves) with the design cues of the Cuda in D3, I originally called it a Stang in the FAQs thread, but took it out cause I'm not sure.
The city is plenty big enough, just hope the chases are fun enough and there are different looking parts. D1 was fun, but everywhere looked the same

Yea I once thought that was a result of trying to get Real Time damage in the game. That the glitch was part of the car frame wraping around poles. That the actual "wrap around damage" was removed but the pole geting to the center of the car leaked out and became a glitch.

oh, i have little doubt that atari will let us down, its just that the whole entire driv3r engine was a wreck (the car damage glitches, the VERY ANNOYING on foot glitches). I hope that when they say that it is "a whole new game" they mean "a whole new game". a game free of null zones, frequent floating corpses, and weird "out of phase" morphing glitches.

The cars getting stuck with a pole inside them is a common glitch, I've seen it in almost every driving game.
GTA SA's damage was horrible. Anyone remember how unrealistic it was? Probably the worst part of the game.
D: PL will be better, of course, but I'm not totally trusting Atari on everything they say. Trust takes a lot to rebuild.

09-15-2005, 10:35 AM
Yeah, one thing I learned from D3 (although I already knew it but I guess I had to find out the hard way to get it really in my head) is to never listen to a company. Of course they're gonna say their products good, they're trying to sell it to our sorry asses.
And I doubt the car stuck in the pole is a glitch from real time damage. They wouldn't leave unfinished, unused code in the game, it would slow it down more to read it, and cause more glitches. Its just a normal glitch in driving games
i think Blondie released an album in 78 called Parallel Lines, maybe that has something to do with the name..

[edit] I suppose this is big enough news for its own thread, so I moved it:
Stuntman 2 for PS3, and possibly Driver 5 (http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=494231)

hmm... stuntman 2, eh? i liked stuntman, cept that i couldnt get past the level where you drive the tuk tuk on the roof. i let my friend borrow it and he got up to the last mission in a few days. i was so stunned and jealous.

Yeah, I loved how hard it was, too bad I had to yell at it so much. Took me a month to beat it. I saw on IGN the other day, its on the top 10 hardest PS2 games

ok enough of that. i want atari or reflections to show us the map of the new york theyre making so we can see exactly how big it is

actually, i dont want to see that... i just want enough information to convince me its gonna be a good game. i want certain things like the "living world" to be confirmed. and i want to see previews. like, i want people from different magazines and websites to test it out and tell us how it is. with driv3r, all we had was promises and hype.

Wish they would relise a demo video, with music. I liked the preview video for D3. I liked also that song.

Let's all tell atari to be as slow as possible. At least we might get a decent game this time. :D

No game should ever try to "beat" another game. That's what's wrong with the world today. Too much competition. Why can't we just enjoy the games we like without comparing them to every other game?

Anyone heard of Play Magazine?
If you have this Magazine you should scan it at an rate so we could read the preview. So u dont have to write out the artical.

Can't please everyone. Check it out now.
A few months ago I was attacked by everyone in this forum, who's Emaxx? yatta yatta yatta. I think you should put new people in your sig. I don't remember names well, so I just looked at one page and took all the names off that. The more names there are, the less special it is.
