I've put a strategy guide online.
GET IT! (http://farcaster.net/imod/moo3/iModders_Guide_to_Master_of_Orion_3.pdf) (.pdf, 1.6 MB)
It covers some basic issues and tries to clarify issues I am asked about very often: race picks, economics, shipbuilding, diplomacy, espionage, unrest control etc.
It is based on the upcoming iMod 2.2, but many facts are valuable to other mods too.
Hope you like it.

What a pity - 232 views and not a single comment... :(

thats life in the big internet though. Its an interesting read, but would have made a bigger impact if it notes on vanilla 1.25 as well as iMod

That's definitly right, but then I should have written two seperate guides.
And as most of the facts are true for vanilla 1.25, I considered it not to be worth the effort.

Actually, you could have just added side notes saying that this is close to or is the same as vanilla moo w/o having to write 2 guides. It might have increased the work, but would also have increased how much could easily what changes iMod made and helped noobs with vanilla 1.25 and get them excited over iMod at the same time.
*EDIT* Ive done work like this when modding warzone2100, so I know how hard it is both to write the file and not hear a peep from anyone on it. I like to mod. NWN, WZ2100, SC4, MOO.. TA was another but never got too deep into it.

I like to mod. What are you planning to change?

Not sure yet. Most of what i am planning on are DEAs, specials, diplo (maybe). I've been looking through several mods that are out right now including iMod. I have a lot of the patches from BH and gerra installed. I love the hullsize patch. I can make small swarm ships that will out perform much larger ships for system duty. hehe ever been attacked by an angry swarm of lancers armed with hvy mnt weapons? Not fun if your fleet only has a mass of spinals
First thing to start with is go through ostegos mod and see what was changed and incorporate some of it depending on what it is. The specials though are a must for the next game as well as planetary add-ons. Vaguely remember reading something about add-ons for the space port being busted. Is this hard coded or a spreadsheet problem?
I like to tinker though, so have no set plans on what I will eventually add replaced fix or break :weird:
*EDIT* biggest mod job I did was the 1.11 update for warzone. If you think moo spreadsheets were a mess you should check out everything that goes into the wdg files for warzone 2100
All those files are comma seperated and the codes are hell to decipher w/o the database pumpkin studios gave us.. only problem is the database was out of date so you still have to learn the files to update the database to more easily add to the existing format

I love the hullsize patch. I can make small swarm ships that will out perform much larger ships for system duty. hehe ever been attacked by an angry swarm of lancers armed with hvy mnt weapons? This definitly sounds like a good idea. But keep in mind that an AI player will always try to build the biggest hull available. You could level this by rearranging the autobuild and give PD a higher priority...
First thing to start with is go through ostegos mod and see what was changed and incorporate some of it depending on what it is. Again, a very good idea. iMods economy is based on Otsegos, too. But some of the stuff is broken and leads to DXSU errors (espionage system IIRC and other thisgs). Don't know anything about space port add-ons. I've modded the vanilla 1.2.5 ones...

Most of what I play for is the early micro and economic aspects anyway. Spying is fun but gets to be more of a hassle than its worth. Spying would be better if you could get intel on new planets, planet makeup, fleet makeup, hull configurations... One thing I also like better about IG2. Spies were more useful in that game as they would produce useful intel instead of just blowing things up and killing leaders.

To Laryllan:
Nice work. I'd definitely like to see this as a nascent effort at building a more complete instructional/strategy guide. I certainly know that, after a couple of years away from the game, I could use it!
Thanks for your efforts in this regard.

I definitely plan to check out the impact of the new patches. There's too much good stuff to pass up. :-)
