Changing ships, getting new ones

Ive played this game allot of times before but ive never managed to get rid of my tug, how in game can you get new ships like the corvet class ships etc.

You can upgrade your ship near the beginning of the second Act of the game. You'll receive a mission to go a place in the Santa Romera system, to talk to a representative of the MCA, Mwari Colonial Alliance. Go talk to them. :D

You can later upgrade to a heavy corvette. Just keep following the emails you get.
