not true... Iceatcs has done it...

and so has Marnetmar:
http://www.vodhin.net/images/webRCT3.jpg
How I don't know exactly, though it seems related to a flag in jonwil's importer that is now working (v13)

very simple, just black and white, black is for tranparent, but grey can be semi-tranparent...
...Well yeah the black (0,0,0) and white (255,255,255)
Maybe in the Photoshop if you save greyscale, it might work for the alpha, because you only allow all RGB in same number to get all the range of greys...
In paint, you can save 8bits (256 colors) BMP.
So -please don't take me wrong, you've done a fantastic job on this, and all I want to do is make sure you know what's cooking out there... I really wish I had time to figure this stuff out, but my brain's cheeze-wiz as it is. I'm just tossing out some ideas that might work (or maybe not).
I like the idea of a window you could stick on any wall, and I'd love to see transparent windows in the full walls. The curtain Idea I had would be only two types: narrow for single windows and wide for the double. bother would be a floor to ceiling kinda job- anod could be a single flat texture, like the sprites from old 3D games.

Yes it can be done shyguy, the problem I've been having is the web texture came out fine, but I have other textures that I made the same way & for some reason they either don't show up at all or only part shows up & it's not the right part lol
I don't understand this, since the textures were made the same way & at the same time, although I've tried remaking some & got the same results. Once I can get it figured out to work correctly all the time, I'll make some kind of tut for this.
EDIT: Actually it's not a flag setting Vodhin, it's adding the extra alpha texture file when making the ovl files ;)

I was going to make a cool haunted house scenery, but you can use these just for that. Its awesome looking. Congrats on the hard work. It does look like it paid off. Its seems pretty flexible to work with. :)

Oh, OK... See... this is why I don't make scenery. But on the textures not working sometimes- I wonder: could it be due to the shade used? Example- a faded blue in RGB 64.64.128 is mostly gray- as all multiples of 8 translate to gray. 63.63.127 has no gray and looks nearly the same- the pallet to render the color is completely different, though. But I don't know exactly what I'm talking about, only something I noticed when playing with RGB values and their hex equivilants.

Actually you use 2 different texture files for the transparencies. The regular texture you want to show up & the second for the "alpha" to tell the game which parts should show up & which should be transparent. The "alpha" texture is simply a black & white "outline" (sort of) of the original texture, this tells the game to show the white area & not the black.
I haven't figured out why they don't work sometimes, it's confusing when I made several the same way, but I must be doing something wrong somewhere. I'll get it figured out though.
What an absolutely fantastic set this is....and my god - so versatile.
i would've never imagined me being able to use these parts in such an unrelated manner.
i mean, there is the standard use - as historical buildings:
http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/5856/resort12da.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
but there is also a much wider use in building elements - just look at this mega lattice covering im building for a park:
http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/482/daylattice11bz.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/1503/nightlattice1go.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/865/daylattice23dj.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
you've seriously done a fantastic job on this - every peice fits perfectly...ever color is painted right, every texture tiles well... just absoluetly fantastic!
thanks soo much shyguy!

Very cool, n747!
I knew you guys would come up with all sorts of uses for these pieces that I never even dreamed of. (Okay, well I did kind of know that there were many uses beyond just Main Street theming that could be done).
Great Job.
Can't wait to see what other applications you guys find for these pieces...

Man I'm having a lot of fun with this set
I think there will be a huge appreciation for ANY structure made with it due to the respect in the amount of time it takes just to make one perfect spire! lol there are so many pieces involved for one good looking wall it's insane!
Yes, for Magical Journeys I'm making a Ragtime Road and this scenery works PERFECTLY! I just need to perfect my color coordinations with the set and whatnot.
Thanks again!
BUT
I'm having a bit of an issue. With the roof-railings they don't seem to match up perfectly with the height of the roof cap. Any ideas?

I would be having fun if this set actually worked!:(
See what happens is...
...1.I download.
2.I extract it to C:\Program Files\Atari\RollerCoasterTycoon(R) 3\Style\Themed.
3.Go into game click on scenery icon, Game freezes.
4.Alt+Tab out message says: no svd for sid or no sid for svd (Don't know which one!)
What am I doing wrong?

I know it's too much to ask for people to actually read these threads, but here's a repeat of the solution to this problem, which you would have found if you did, in fact, read the latest posts to this thread...
"You still have too many folders, I think. Under the "Themed" directory, you should have a folder called "shy-Main Street Set." When you open that folder, you should have 2 files ("style.common.ovl" and "style.unique.ovl") and one more folder called "shy-Main Street Set". Click on that folder and you should have all the .ovl files.
If you have an extra folder in this sequence, it's not going to work and you'll get those error messages.
If you open the first folder and there's another one inside (#2) and then another inside that, with the 2 files and 3rd folder, remove folder #2 and all its contents and copy it into the "Themed" directory. Remove the original extra folder."

If you mean that they sink in a little, I did that so people could use them for ground railings too. (But they won't line up with the grid, though)

First I have to finish Main Street. Then Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland, and THEN Tomorrowland. And then I will die of old age.
Oh, and Hillibilly...
Great work!
------------------
I have also been playing around with tranparencies and I have gotten them to work better. I created the window I was working on above and attached it to a transparent wall. Now it can be placed inside any regular wall and the disappearing problem is better. It still happens, but at farther distances.

Hey, Shyguy, you can use your railing on the ground. you just have to use the short piece at the ends to line up with the grid... I also leaves room from shrubs and trees. Also, you now have a showroom over at vodhin.net (http://www.vodhin.net/CustomScenery/index.html) ;)

Did you download the zip file in the first post? If so, you'll need to get Powerarchiver or Winzip to extract the contents of the zip to the C/Program Files/Atari/RollerCoaster Tycoon 3/Style/Themed folder & then it'll be in your game.
Links for PowerArchiver & Winzip below, these are free to download & use.

Where did you extract it to SCAREcrow22?
It needs to be in the C/Program Files/Atari/RollerCoaster Tycoon 3/Style/Themed unless your game is installed in a different drive than "C".

One question about this scenery. Why does it require that you click on each piece of scenery to remove it?
The option to highlight an area and remove all scenery doesn't work with this scenery. It has to be removed one by one.

I hope that this has not been answered, but I don't want to read all the pages in this thread, so excuse me.
Has anybody else experianced a severe drop in frame rate when looking over a completed building with this set. I have an entire town square built with the set, and every time I roll the mouse over it, I get some of the worse frame rate I have ever seen with RCT3, with peeps, and without. The game comes to complete crawl. If I am not in isometric view, forget it. The rest of the park runs smooth as silk, but this one area is the problem.
I am in no way bashing Shyguy for what has to be one of the best custom scenery sets released for RCT3, but I was just curious if anybody else was having this problem, or if it was just me.

This set, along with most of the custom sets doesn't have collision detection enabled on them. This makes them a bit more user friendly, but you can't delete them in a group like the regular stuff.

Some of these props are a bit high in the poly count, which especially if you're using a lot of them together will cause a drop in the frame rate in the game. The tradeoff is that they look great ;)

Hi Shyguy,
That's a wonderful set you made there, but I have a question:
How did you do that option with the walls etc. placing on halfway on the grid? What did you do in the scenery importer?
Thanks in advance,

EDIT: Aah...I found it, you used the option quarter tile for all pieces.

Sorry, I don't know how to make a self-extactor "thingy". You need winzip, winrar, or Windows XP (which comes with it's own extractor.)
Maybe someone else with more knowledge of these things can make a self-extacting version.

shyguy, I just have to say again just what a joy it is to build with this set. I'm creating things I never thought possible.
One thing I wonder if you'll consider...the triple arched window has the understandable problem where it disappears quickly when you zoom out a short distance. I do understand the reason for that. But I was wondering if it would be possible to somehow transfer that exact same window as a two dimensional image on a wall...similar to the single and double windows. That way the wall with the image could be placed behind the 3-D version. Is that possible? I really love the triple window, but it's really limited as to where I can use it because of the small draw distance.
Reguardless, thanks again for this great pack!

I will probably make a new version and include it in the 2nd Main Street Set. I'm slowly learning more tricks to lower the polygon counts.

Main Street Set version 1.2 released!
There's good news and bad news... The bad is you'll have to install this set again. :sour:
The good news is it fixes a couple problems. (Well, at least makes them better... :D
http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/9183/newset7xb.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The above pieces have been improved!
The disappearing problem has been greatly improved on the Dormers, the Cornices and the (yay!) Triple Window. Also, the lighting was backwards on the Awning, making it too dark. Now it's much brighter. Also, the Toys sign has been offset a bit for asthetic purposes.
The disappearing problem has been greatly improved by attaching the objects to a huge, transparent wall. Now you can move back twice as far before they start to vanish. Just be careful when coloring objects nearby, as you might accidentily click on the transparent wall instead, and color the wrong piece. (There's never a perfect solution...)

I found with other sets that it works best to delete the old set first then re-install the updates. I had a few problems with Klinn's Frameworks just trying to install on top of the old.
I have not had any problems with any scenery that has been updated working in parks where I had used the previous versions. It has always shown up normally after updating.

I know in RCT2 this would defintely be a problem. If you have the old version of an object in your park, and you have the new version of the object in your Data Folder, you wouldnt be able to opne the park.
So thats why I asked, but then again, this isnt RCT2....

Klinn,
I believe it has a lot to do with the size of the object. Some of the huge scenery pieces that come with RCT3 have way more than 350 faces and they don't disappear.

it could be right, shyguy, because my new pieces, the twin argonaths - those are about 700 polygons each, and have no problem with the disappear,

Hey im new at the custom scenery stuff can you tell me what to do with the main street pack i downloaded as to how to get it in the game? thx
Vodhin
12-14-2005, 12:48 PM
Hi 088801! Welcome to the boards! I have a little section on my site that may help you get this set working- Click Here (http://www.vodhin.net/CustomScenery/index.html). Keep in mind that these custom sets will not show up in any scenarios until they have been "invented" during game play. It's best to just start a new sandbox park and they should be there from the start of the game.
The most common problem for folks using custom scenery is misplaced files. The custom sets find their needed files by following a hard coded path buried within them, so if you have installed RCT3 into a different directory than the default one that the game uses during setup, then the files will not work.
After un-zipping the files, check to see that there are the following two files with in the set's top folder: style.comon.ovl and style.unique.ovl. some PC's wont show the ovl bit, but as long as those two files are present in the top most containing folder the set should be fine.
If the files are not there- like there is another folder and the files are in that one, then the set will NOT work. You need to fix it: you can delete the top most folder and start again or just move the sub folder to the desktop, delete the now empty top folder, and then move the one on the desktop back into the Themed folder.
I hope this helps :D

Hi Shyguy ...
I have just a little technical question. You wrote somewhere that you want update your Main Street Packs 1 & 2 sometimes, because of the texture-problem. If you do it, have this any effects on the parks with your current scenery ... apart from the effect, that the objects don't disappered.

I have just a little technical question. You wrote somewhere that you want update your Main Street Packs 1 & 2 sometimes, because of the texture-problem. If you do it, have this any effects on the parks with your current scenery ... apart from the effect, that the objects don't disappered.
It should have NO effect except to cut down lag. The pieces will all look the same and you won't have to re-build anything.

I've downloaded the scenery pack and instaleld it but, every time I go to use it, the game crashes and kicks me back out to Windows...
Am I doing something wrong? How do I fix the problem?

Hey shy, in one of your other threads u said the no svd:for sid: or w/e problem can be fixed by taking out extra folders. I did just that and I'll show you what I have, game still crashes. Could you help?http://img487.imageshack.us/img487/7038/shy13hu.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I can see right away what your problem is. When you open the first folder, there should be 3 things in there...another folder and 2 files. Look at all the other folders of the other scenery packs. You will see the same thing.
When you click on the second folder, then you should see the list of all the many files. Just look at the scenery packs that work and make the Main Street one the same way.

I don't know what else to tell you. There is a thread on how to install custom scenery. Maybe you should read that. I've explained this over and over many times in my threads. All custom scenery is installed the same way. There's nothing different about the pack you're trying to install.

In that folder you should have the one called "shy-Main Street Set" and ALSO style.common.ovl and style.unique.ovl (judging by your screenshot these last two appear to be in with all the other main street files - they have to be outside the folder).
Look at the other scenery packs like shyguy said - they all have the two .ovl files and the folder containing all the other ones.

Seriously now, sorry but this gets frustrating, just delete the main folder and reinstall the set over again, but this time FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS!

How do you take a screen shot of your desktop? I want to make sure I'm installing these packs right. The first time I downloaded them, I was able to use the scenery the first time I ran the game. If I close the game and restart it, go back in to the same saved game, the scenery is still in my park but, if I go to click to add more walls and roofs, the game crashes and I have to uninstall the scenery pack.

Quality set, although I seem to be getting a few problems on mine,
A few of the roof pieces, (the green ones in the image below) are only coming up as being one whole colourable piece, which means the whole piece is just whatever colour I set it too, which looks like crap.
Any ideas on how to fix it, running soaked btw?

If you are talking about the white trim those are separate paces that come either the set that you use along with the regular roof pieces.

Yes, they are called "Roof Caps" and are meant to be placed on top of the roof pieces. There is a regular one and a corner one.
Hope I helped.

You have probably installed the set incorrectly. Look at the top of the custom scenery forums, there are several threads stickied detailing how to install custom scenery.
I cant download it its saying "File not found"? any solution?

I already have Main Street Set 1 v. 1.2, but it is not clear whether the one you get from shyguy's site is the latest version or simply version 1.0. Both the archive I have and the one I get from shyguy's site contain the same number of files (136), but the archive I have is of a slightly larger size than the one I can currently get from shyguy's site. Does anyone know for sure which one I should use?

i love your main street scenery. i downloaded it a while back, but i still use it. i have used the main street scenery to build 'the marsten house' from the movie 'salem's lot'. if you haven't seen what the marsten house looks like, it is kind of a gothic looking victorian house, not too different from what the house in the film ''psycho'' looks like. your roofs you designed, like the spire, made the building of the marsten house possible. i just wanted to say thanks for posting it and allowing it to be downloaded. here is a url of the video i made that has the marsten house in it. -bry:up:
