Tampa, Florida - Passengers riding the Sheikra roller coaster at Busch Gardens were stuck at the horizonal platform, just before the drop.
Twenty-four passengers were stranded on the ride for about an hour on Saturday, high above the theme park.
A rescue trolley traveled up to the top and brought the passengers down safely one row at a time.
There were no injuries.
After 40 minutes of test runs, the ride was deemed safe again for passengers.
A Busch Gardens spokesman says he knows it was an inconvenience to the park patrons, but safety is the number one priority of the park.
A computer detected an error in Sheikra's air compressor, causing the car to stop at the highest part of the ride.
That must have been pretty scary if you're afraid of heights.

Well good thing the computer detected that. Amazing what techonlogy is doing to save our lives. Imagine what would have happened if it didn't.......

Actually I'm somewhat afraid of heights, and I do ride coasters. I've never been on a coaster higher than about 200ft or so. I admit I am scared of getting stuck on the top of a coaster... but then again, that's part of the thrill, isn't it?

I have to admit that I really find news reports of a ride getting stuck like that to be annoying. Essentially, the item says: Something broke, safety systems did their job, everyone's fine, there's nothing to see here.
In my opinion, if the press is going to mention every such ride malfunction, they also ought to mention every bus that breaks down on the freeway. Now, I've heard arguments that state that a ride breakdown is "more dangerous" due to the heights involved. To that, I say try telling it to the folks who were killed this summer on a freeway in Metro Detroit when their bus broke down, and they were struck by another vehicle. That story didn't get as much news coverage as SheikRa's breakdown is getting, and people were killed on that bus.
But, ride breakdowns are more "glamorous" for the media, and it helps in their agenda of trying to avoid letting the public have any fun at all, thereby getting on the good side of Ed Markey.
Sorry, just had to rant a bit, as it's one of my pet peeves!
Just to make sure there's no misunderstanding... since it did make the news, I think it's an appropriate topic for this forum. I just don't think it deserved to make the news.

I was there when it happened! :D
I don't really remember where we were, but we looked at shei-kra and saw that the train was stuck at the top! There were people standing around on the top of the lift, it was funny. :D

Of course, you could sit at the top of a 420ft hill for 20 minutes and have someone push you over... :)

I think its really fun to get stuck at the top. Then I get to spit from the top and watch it hit supports, or even better, the people below. I also like talking on the top. It is also a great point for taking pics. So, if I got stuck at the top, I wouldn't be angry.

Well that's Six Flag's Crapyiness. Busch Gradens keeps their casters in excellent condition.

First time of heard of a Beemer getting stuck or anything in a while.
I agree with you Harpo. I've seen so many ride breakdowns on the news, it gets really annoying. Especially when nothing really happens, which is most of the time. They might as well announce it everytime someone trips. You know, since more people get hurt walking and falling every year that ride injuries.

Yes, Wooden, you can. Most of my trips to SF over Georgia are very pleasant. They've been doing a wonderful job the past two years, and I can't wait to see next year's park. Offhand, I'd say that SFoG is heading in the right direction, with Goliath next year and the new mystery coaster for 2008.

I know, I personally liuke my local SF park. (SF New England)
But I was just saying they do not keep their roller coasters in the best shape the can be. I mean all the other parks manage to do this, so why not them?

I really like Six Flags over Texas. It is a great park, but Wooden, I know what you mean, the SF park near you is no good, so you think they are all bad. But there are a few that are good.

i live in Austin Texas, aorund three or less hours away from three different six flags parks
so far i have to say, astroworld closing is no big loss, except for the rides
the experience of even being in that park makes me want a biohazard scrubdown
sic flags over texas can be quite enjoyable
and depending ont he day, you hardly wait more than 10 minutes for any given ride
and the coasters are certainly amazing
altho the schwarzkopf looper they have, shockwave i believe, nees some retracking done again, it has gotten rough this year
and six flags:fiest texas is a WONDERFULL park
it wasn't bui;t by them, but azquired after the original owner made what he wanted, then wanted to get out with his money
the theming is wonderifull, the coaster use of the landscape is incredible, even for six flags, look at superman, krypton coaster, a custom b&m floorless
they did get the plug n play boomerang, but there is also the rattler, a great wooden that has been retracked one too many times due to complaints
if you can't take the heat, THEN DON'T RIDE THE FRIGGIN WOODIES PEOPLE!!!!
sheesh

Sadly, that is true... it takes all the fun out of bashing Six Flags all the time, but it is true... :(

There was no injuries.
May I ask why there would be injuries on a coaster that's just sitting on the track? What would they do? Get all crazy and mental and like bang they're heads against the seat?
I was just wondering why they would put that in there.:D
