So now it's time to pay attention to Hill #3. And the five tunnels. And a little something extra we've recently added to the design.

It's a great new element, but not something we can discuss just yet.

The best part of it, though, is that The Gravity Group and Will are still scrutinizing the design and making improvements here and there.

Yes, the supports are metal, just as many other more modern wooden coasters have steel supports.

Villan at Geagua Lake is a hybrid. Also it sucks. I don't think Voyage will suck though. It doesn't looke like it will have the back kicking feel.

It sucks because the types of trains it has. There Greastuler (Spelling?) Known for there sucky wooden coaster trains and great spinning mouses.

Uhh... no. They're PTC trains.

When talking about The Villain, okinawa is right -- Villain has Gerstlauer trains.

During its first year, Villain was a great ride, but Six Flags failed to maintain it properly, and it became too rough too fast -- very similar to Raging Wolf Bobs. Cedar Fair did a major overhaul on RWB prior to 2005, and it runs MUCH better now (also using Gerstlauer trains), and is back to being the fun ride it was 20 years ago. Rumor is that Cedar Fair will be giving a similar treatment to Villain this winter.

SnooSnoo
10-31-2005, 11:50 AM
I pray they fix the Villian. I refuse to ride that ride. By FAR the worst ride experience i've ever had on a coaster. No matter where you sit, you will be in pain when you get off.

RWB is a good ride now, i'm glad they fixed it.

Harpo
10-31-2005, 12:12 PM
My worst-ever ride experience was on Flashback at Magic Mountain -- the one and only coaster that I feel should be turned into scrap metal due to having absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever (in my opinion).

Wood coasters with a metal structure, such as The Voyage will be, generally have lower maintenance costs, which is a large part of why they are attractive to parks. For all-wood coasters, a well maintained coaster replaces every board approximately once every 7 years. For a big wood coaster, that's a lot of replacement wood!

Wood coasters with steel supports are not particularly uncommon, and have been around for a long time. Even The Comet at Great Escape, a coaster that's been around quite a while and is currently in its 3rd "life," has metal supports.

Far more uncommon are steel coasters with wood supports, such as Cedar Point's Gemini, or Valleyfair's Excalibur. Gemini is exceptionally rare, being a steel racing coaster with wood supports. It's the only one I've seen, although I don't know if there's another one somewhere else in the world. I'm fairly certain it's the only one out of all the coasters in the U.S., Canada, and United Kingdom.

El Toro is an Intamin, so I have respect for it. HOWEVER, the layout sucks. thats like 20 minutes of dabbeling to come up with. Voyage on the other hand, is built by four dudes who know what they are doing. I think Voyage will be up first (because the parts have only started to arrive for El Toro) and I think Voyage will be the better coaster.

alpengeist04
11-11-2005, 01:41 PM
I don't compare coasters till I ride them, so I won't side with El Toro or The Voyage. I was just teasing WoddenWarior because he's so anti-Six Flags and El Toro.

^ As far as the layout goes, never judge a book by its cover, so you should wait to ride El Toro before bashing it.;) :)

I'm guessing that it will either be a trick track or a dip on the flat section out of the turnaround that seems like it should be an MCBR. I would like to see a trick track more, but more airtime can't hurt. ;)

Oh, and the new element will be announced early next week on the CoasterBuzz (http://www.holidayworld.com/holiblog/uploaded_images/n14tunnel3-756709.JPG) podcast. Be sure to listen...even though it isn't as good as Coaster Radio or In The Loop, but whatever.

PTC is duh best. I'm glad they picked it.

Rather nice looking vehicle, although I'm surprised it hasn't been made to look more ship-like. The running board looks a bit like a ship, but I would have seen it as a great opportunity to have an entire train of varnished wood, instead of painted wood. Then, if they really wanted to go all-out, the side units, where the manual lap bar release mechanism is located, could have been formed to look like some of the carvings on ancient ships.

It probably would be too tough to do with making it both durable and good looking, but it would have been interesting to have the seats look like they were made out of material from sails.

Another neat modification would have been to have a bowsprit on the front of the train. However, while I think it would look great, that probably would be a maintenance nightmare.

I am pleased to see that the trains don't have the high-back seats. I definitely prefer the more open feeling without the high-backs.

Freddie1
11-16-2005, 06:57 PM
Yeah all of that would have been cool, but expensive. A regular 6 car 2 bencher stock from PTC is about $250,000, so all that custom stuff would have hurt that price. I still think PTCs are beautiful no matter how painted/themed, I'm just glad they didn't take the easy way out and buy some G trains (Grestlauers).

That would be snow. See... when it's really cold outside, the water freezes in the air creating little white flakes. They accumulate on the ground. This usually happens only during the winter months in a cooler climate region.

I've ridden Hades, and I don't remember any part looking like that. It's prolly the underground part. But uh yeah, Hades has some rough spots but just not anything close to something like SOB or Mean Streak rough.

"Voyage is a wild son of a ?"

"The ride was frightening. I have never been on a wooden coaster that went so fast, and really put the ####'# up me"

"Spent loads of time on the Voyage which is a fantastic ride. BUT it's very aggresive. Reminds me of Desperado. Either way it was an experience. We all think it'll need taming for the public?"

"Voyage is AWESOME"

I'm both nervous and excited. I don't know what to think! It looks like a lot of fun, though. Everyone in the station seemed to be enjoying themselves. Even the plus size woman had a good time.

Ohhh... the tension is mounting!

Yeah, it looks like a lot of fun. Oh, hurry up tomorrow! Might get my adrenaline pumping on Raven or Ledgend beforehand, though (Nobody will be in line:)). This thing looks wild!

Time will tell if you know what I mean. :downcast::cry:

I'm not trying to like, say this ride sucks, because it doesn't, it's a truely amazing ride. But with past records of CCI (NOW Gravity Group, YES Gravity Group is CCI with a different name, and different office, and different people, etc etc). Those fast speed and banked turns are just bound for some roughness.

Let's hope it doesn't happen though :).

That settles my nerves a bit. Sounds like a great coaster.

Well, it's the morning of. I'm sitting here with my Raven shirt ready to go. I think we'll start out on Raven and Legend for a while until some of the crowd clears out at the Voyage. This is also good so that if the Voyage tosses us around too much, our day isn't completely killed.

Here goes nothin'!

Well, I'm home. Not much to report. At the park, before I had a chance to ride The Voyage, I developed very severe stomach cramps. I'm very dissapointed that I didn't feel like riding. My friends rode and really loved it. They said it was a bit rough, but the best woodie they've ever been on. I rode Raven and Legend once before the cramping started and stuck to easy rides throughout the day. I'm REALLY upset that I didn't get to take my maiden Voyage. I'll be back at the park again this season, though, and hopefully no Pepto Bismol will be needed.

There were too many Brits there, anyway. :p

I will be there early June with The European Coaster Club. It is to the end of our 18-day 21-park trip!

Looking forward to it.

Someone on RCCGB message board said that although it was a superb coaster, it was quite "violent". I am not sure how to take that description...if it means powerful, boistrous, etc then that's no problem...but violent can mean rough. I suppose I will just have to wait to ride it myself!

We were at Holiday World over Memorial Day weekend and rode The Voyage (my wife and daughter only rode it once though). It is a little rough going through some of the turns. Mostly the ones where it changes directions. But I didn't think it was that much worse than either The Raven or Legend.

Great! I'll ride it someday. Just have to schedule another trip up there.

I too rode Voyage over Memorial Day weekend at Holiwood Nights. All I can say is wow! It is now my #1 favorite wooden coaster. I highly recommend it Wodden.:up:

We're planning another trip to HW this summer. I still need to get my Voyage and Gobbler Getaway credit in! I'm also going down to Bowling Green, KY to Beech Bend sometime to ride Kentucky Rumbler. That ride looks awesome.

I can't believe I haven't told you all this story yet. On Holiday World's opening day, we had just turned onto Louis Koch Memorial Highway off of I-64 on the way to the park. My mom (who was driving me and two other friends) said, "Oh my gosh! Is that a..." WHAM! A large wild turkey jumps into the side of our car and rips off one of our mirrors. Feathers were flying everywhere. I think the turkey lived, at least for a short while. We had to get the mirror replaced. Suprisingly, insurance actually believed what happened. I wonder how often they get claims about turkeys... Ironically, Gobbler Getaway hadn't opened yet. Maybe if Holiday World guests had been rounding up those turkeys, none of this would have happened.

I think you'll like The Voyage, but Gobbler Getaway was not that great IMO. It's definitely a family ride and not real exciting.

I like Sally rides. I think they're neat. Family rides are a fun thing to do between coaster rides.
