I have had this "disc read error" problem, and may be eligable to receive a free PS2 game. Maybe I'll get D: PL?

My PS2 did that at somepoint too.:weird: If your case was the same as mine, your ps2's screwed.

I doubt they'd let you get a new game. (You'd probably have to choose from a crappy list of old games) :(

This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. What the hell? I almost think it's a joke...

Some PS2s have disc read errors so Sony gets sued? Is there something I'm not understanding here?

"Is there something I'm not understanding here?"

Apparently. This isn't just "some" PS2s malfunctioning, this is a class action law suit because tens of [if not hundreds of] thousands of customers have complained about the same thing. I'm all for it, I had to take my POS in twice, and it still malfunctions occasionally.

It hasnt happend with my current ps2 (altho my first 1 broke down just by sitting in front of my tv...). But before I got my first ps2, I rented 2 of em' from hastings to just play a few games to try it out...both of them gave me the "Error" message with every game.

Its happened to me, and everyone, so they're not gonna give you anything. The fact that someone could actually get a lawsuit over this just proves the stupidity of the legal system. You can sue for getting hit by a baseball at a baseball game. What a great world. Maybe I'll get sued for farting indoors next, I'll have to pay the victim $5mil for damages

I started getting DREs about a year after purchasing my PS2, and after spraying some Dust Off! cleaner into the console, it worked fine.

I checked my model number, and I'm eligible for the "free game".

I cleaned the dust off too, but quite francally it still seems to happen. I don't know what's wrong with my ps2.

As did I, but to no avail. I actually sent my PS2 to Sony for a free repair, but it still acts up

I did that too, but after a while it keeps showing up. It seems to me like there's no stoping this thing, but hopefully the ps3 won't experience the problems as the ps2 did.

All you can do is take the CD out, blow on it or wipe it with your shirt, thats what I do, usually works the first time, otherwise I just get really pissed at the console and hope it eventually works, I think it does usually work though, even after a few times. I may have gave up once because I couldn't get it to read the disc. I can't believe theres a law suit over it, but as I said, legal system these days. I also didn't read up on the lawsuit so I don't know how serious it is, too lazy.

I have a PS2 that is described in the settlement, I have a 39001. I have never had any major problems with "Disc Read Error" messages. It has only happened a few times, and only with my GameShark disc. I have had my PS2 for over 2 years now, and never been disappointed with it's performance. Maybe I'm just a lucky person who got a good PS2.

When I got those messages, I thoght that I should clean it up, dust it, ect; Then NO games would play on it so I brought it in at "compUSA" And they told me it was screwed. I bought another and I hadn't had the problem since.

See, how can they sue just because a large number of PS2s have frequent errors? They could sue if every single one of those versions with those numbers didn't work correctly, but it's evidence here that that's obviously not true.

I believe because they are insinuating Sony intentionally produced defective PS2s with the intent of repairing the defects to make profits.

Then what are you arguing for?

I think that the best solution is to buy a ps3 rather than buying another ps2 and having to pray so that you don't pick the wrong ps3. I hope that the ps3 won't experience this problem otherwise it will mean bad for me.

My PS2 has worked just fine so far, knock on wood. It even plays D3 fairly smoothly almost all the time.

I'm arguing for free love man. Free Love!!! You're just trying to oppress us. Help, I'm being repressed! Now we see the violence inherent in the system!

Seriously, dude, what happened to the matt__jon all the n00bs looked up to? Apparently it IS possible to get less mature. :bulb:

I'm not eligible because mine didn't break fast enough, I didn't take it in to get it repaired or even try, and I opened mine. :D

I hope that was a joke. Can't tell if the smiley was put because it was sarcastic or trying to make me less angry. You wouldn't like me when I was angry.

Besides, half of what I said was a quote from Monty Python.

It wasn't a joke, but it also wasn't there to "make you angry" or put you down in any way. I'm simply pointing out that I've noticed you acting less mature on the forums than I remember.

matt__jon

Oh, well thats ok. Was I ever mature?

You did NOT post crap posts so you know.

My cousin Paul found a website last sunday that tells you all the steps how to get rid of disc read errors. Here's the site. http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars
