Well, in case nobody got it yet, there's this french website about the big twist. Nothing's confirmed, but I like to believe it is true.
To make it short, you start out in the 70s, and then you get thrown in jail. You get out 30 years later, and it's 2008.
That means that they're making two New Yorks, one of the 70s, and the other in modern times.
That really would change everything in the game, cars, peds, buildings.
Discuss.

I dunno, I find it hard to believe.
It's hard enough to make a city with the features, detail, and size that Atari reports as it is. But to do it twice?! And fit it on one disc? :o

yea, wouldn't it be kinda hard to hide a whole freaking city for so long? How come we havent seen any screen shots of the 2008 '' city''. Also, wouldnt it take too long and be too complicated for reflections? [ no offence]

Well it's not confirmed.
Yeah it would be long I guess. Or maybe the number of square feet will be divided in two, for both cities. That would actually suck though.
Yeah I'm also starting to think this can't be true.

Well, it explanes why The Kid looks like 40 years old in some screens. I just hope (if it's true) that they don't jack it up by making a buncha dorky futuristic cars and stuff.

i wont believe it till i see it. because a month ago, we knew that there would be one city, 30 cars on screen. now we "think" we have two cities, 80 cars on screen, and 200 peds on screen. sounds like a 360 game. im taking everything i hear now with a grain of salt, because we are being hit with so much crazy information its hard to believe.
im glad that we aren't getting really hyped up though, thats what happened last time....

Its not all that farfetched, its not like they're making two completely different cities, its the same city, a lot of the stuff from 78 is still around in NY, all they have to do is take out a few buildings, make some new cars, put some new buildings in, take away the 70's look. Its much easier than making a brand new city of the same size. Plus, some of the old cars can still be around in modern times, so they don't need to make as many new cars.
I don't believe it, but it would be awesome if they did something like this.
And the reason we haven't seen pics of 2008 parallel lines is because if this is the "big secret" they're holding out on us, they want to keep it secret. So they probably won't confirm this anyway, we won't know if this is true until we get the game.
Plus, the game is called "Parallel Lines," seems to indicate two of the same thing, life after prison is parallel to life before prison??? Any takers? As for now, I just played D3, so I'm not expecting too much.
And if this is true, I wouldn't expect too many futuristic cars, as its only 2008 when you get out of prison, which is 3 years away, not 2308 or anything like that. Would the songs change? That would suck!

I hope this ain't true! Atari said 160 miles and that's awesome. but i want 160 different miles, not 80 miles twice of similar terrain. cause thatwould such!

i don't know, to me just making another city would just screw some story and good parts, and the "classic" car chase feel, here's my opinion:
+Another 'future' version of NY
+Present time cars
-longer release date (probally)
Hopefully when they take time to do the same city, they'll fix minor problems they see or put other things in like...
+Improve AI
+Hey, why not let you change clothes
+more vehicles
+Different types of peds
Making another city won't be perfect though...
-longer release date
-what if you can't play 1978 NY?
-don't put in modern pieces of crap as cars
-there is too many morons in present time
-NO World trade centers!?:(
Overall, I think one place in time would be good enough

Who says the game will be delayed if this is true? If this really is the big secret, they already had it planned out from the beginning, and have been working on it since then. Duh. Its not like they woke up two days ago and said, hey, lets make 78 NY and 08 NY, and then immediatly told the press. And if it is the big secret, they've been telling us there is a secret for a while, so they did not wake up yesterday and decide to add a whole new city.
I'd like this to be true, besides, people complain, I want a Viper in the game, yatta yatta, well, then this game has the best of two worlds, the original Driver set in the 70's, and Driver set today for all the kids who think old cars are ugly. Hopefully there'll be an option after beating 1978 NY to be able to play in 78 or 08.
And if they do have 08 NY, what if you could see cars from before you went to jail and they had more rust on them, or the opposite, some have been restored.
I'm not sure as to how much space the 3 cities on D3 took up on the DVD, though I'm pretty sure it wasn't the whole thing, because they would've made a big deal about using the whole DVD, like Rockstar with San Andreas. People think the games better just because its bigger, so telling them it has more data will sell a few people on it. And from the amount of roads in this game, it has the same amount as all the cities in D3, who knows if thats split between the "two" cities or not, I don't care, cause D3's cities were huge.
I just don't want a shallow city like Nice, where it came in from the coast about 4 blocks (exaggerating) and thats as far in as it came, it just makes the city seem so much smaller, square cities are better.

Well, you're right but some cars nowadays aren't worth anything,
that doesn't mean all of them, just some.
Yeah too bad they don't have as many AWD or RWD anymore.

But if it is true, and it probably isn't, I guess it would be cool. Like Matt Jon said, they would't really need to start at zero to make the 2008 NY.

Hmm... If you really think about it, if it's done right, as far as storyline and gameplay are concerned, it sounds really quite interesting to me! But this seems like it strays so much from the usual car theft undercover stuff that the Driver series is known for... But #1theman is right, if it's a secret, they're not gonna confirm it... Besides, what do the french know? Heh, just kidding! I'll bet the translation got screwed up...

Good lord, maybe it's the release date! If that's the case, I BETTER be able to drive into a gas station and fill up!

I translated it, and I know the language. Don't worry, that's what the site says.

I really hope it's just BS. It would ruin the whole game IMO.
The whole game would suck ass if they made 2 different NYs.
Y'know, it wouldn't be that hard to make 2 New Yorks. From what I know about GTA filestructure and stuff, there are files called .ipl's, and they are a small text list of where what goes in the game map. Most of the models and textures are the same, it's just a few that are specific to 78 or 08. There would be 2 .ipl files, one for 78 and one for 08, But they wouldn't be 2 completeley different cities, and thats not what reflections is doing. Its more like 1 and a quarter, really.

Why? I mean, I think that'd be really cool, especially if they were both fully functional. Imagine how cool it would be to see how the city has changed.

I would be cool. But it make you think really
What is the twist? Gareth said he was not saying, so what can it be if the 2 cities have been confirmate?Makes you think What is Reflections hiding?

you know, the more i think about it, this driver is going to be a great game. from what weve heard so far, this game has a deep story. it even spans 30 years. so basically, reflections is doing what they do best, like they did in driver 1. they create an awesome story that could be a movie, and add in an awesome car chase expirience. i'm starting to gain more confidence that PL won't flop...
and also, the changing of time periods is a whole new idea to the free roam car chase genre, if thats what you would call it. first we had the basic car games (d1), then they let you go on foot, (d2), then they let you shoot guns and expirience weather and day/night change (gta, true crime, the getaway). after that, these free roam do-whatever games all conformed with eachother and basically did the same thing. D:PL is not only going to have all of these things, but after you think youv'e discovered everything there is to know about the city it changes to a whole different time period. and on top of that, it actually has an awesome story that separates it from all of the other games... the driver series always had that. games have done this, but as far as im concerned its never happened in a game like this.
#1theman
12-08-2005, 05:26 PM
But they could easily because there going out on a limb and not following ever other free-roam. That means it could easily as you called it "flop". But as you see with Reflections history they go for damage physics, and Detail.
And with the Story not linear it will fill in if the 2 cities "flop"

As long as they do what they did in the original, and none of the new features mess with the original premise of the series, it should be good. Who cares if they are or aren't like the other guys. Even if it is like the others, it has some different stuff that makes it better, like attention to detail on graphics, physics, and damage. Throw in free roam, car mods (finally!!), more traffic, its time to be the only game primarily about car chases, like it used to be. As long as the car chases are good, nothing else matters. Nothing else feels cooler than weaving between cars with cops that are equally matched with your driving skills and eventually loosing them. I love the slides where you come close to hitting something and just miss, especially when you didn't know it was gonna happen, "where'd that guy come from?"
