I finally figured out all the problems I had with making custom scenery for RollerCoaster Tycoon 3. The main issue was the texture mapping, it was a nightmare for me to do this till I found a helpful site yesterday. And that's why I started making a custom scenery set with Chinese theming. I already made a little Chinese lantern with my own-made textures. Here it is.

Thank you for the positive comments!

This is the list until now:

- Chinese walls and fences
- Chinese roofs
- Chinese doors and windows
- Chinese bridges
- Chinese decorations (outside and inside buildings), I especially want to make these so that people can make very detailed Chinese restaurants, bars, shops, attractions etc.
- Chinese streetlights (objects where you can put the original RCT3 lights in)
- Chinese paving
- Objects for the creation of Chinese gardens
- And maybe Chinese trees etc.

If you want to see how it could be going to look like you can search for images with Google by typing in the following words: yuyuan (famous gardens in Shanghai), forbidden city (Beijing).

Definitely! I used to have these pagodas by a lake with a coaster running by in RCT2 and always to remake it in 3D, I don't like the workarounds we have for Asian theming right now, can't wait to see this pack!

How about making chinese path extras (lamp, litter bin, bench etc)
All of these are possible with the importer as it is right now so there is no reason not to :)

I cant wait for this set! But that object in your first post seems to have a lot of polys, have you seen if it slows down the game?

Coaster_Phantom
01-08-2006, 07:06 AM
Thank you all!

@j2cCreations: I already tested the Chinese lantern in the game and it doesn't seem to slow the game down and it also doesn't disappear when you zoom out far away. Even when I placed about hundreds of them there was no lag at all.

The lantern also was a little bit dark in the game. But my videocard is really bad and all the objects in my game are always dark, but in a week or so I'm getting a new computer so that I can see how it really looks like in the game.

By the way: All roofs, objects, door, windows etc. will be recolorable.

Guybrush_47

The lantern would look lovely if you could figure out a way of getting it to light inside. You'd need to make it look like the thing is glowing, but if you put a fair bit of time into it, you'd have a gorgeous looking light.

Phantom, take it from someone who knows, don't go crazy right away. Make sure that you have a plan and stick to it. My work progress contains of, doing a test piece, fixing the errors, and then making all the combinations for it. When thats done, i then make an object, and then back to the walls. If you keep doing that, by the time you've made 4 different types of walls, you'll have enough objects to put with them :)

If you need any help or crit, just give us a bell. Oh and one last thing, try and collect as many pictures as you can for referencing, at the momment i have roughly 150 odd pictures of jurassic park, and they're hard to find. The more pictures you get the easier it will be make the models. Good luck sir :)

01-08-2006, 10:05 AM
Thanks Vodhin and Guybrush :D

@Guybrush: I'm still working on the lantern and I'm experimenting a little bit with the effect points that are in the latest importer. I hope I can make a decent lightball but I don't know how to do it yet. But practice makes perfect (I hope).

About the pictures, I now have roughly over 200 pictures of ancient Chinese buildings, benches, lanterns, gardens etc. I also read a lot about China so creating everything how it's suposed to won't be a problem. And I'm not gonna do this the fast way because I want this to be good looking.

Thanks again! :D:D:D:D:D

The important thing to remember imo is that textures can always be replaced. But the uvw settings can take hours to sort out, but in the end it's worth it. Everything HAS to line up, if it doesn't you naked eye spots the fault straight off.

Also i'm a strong believer in versatile textures. You should be able to use the same textures over and over for different models. Either way, i'm looking forward to some more wip shots.

Hi everyone, next week I have a test week at school and I'll have to learn for it this week and next week and that's why I don't have time to work on this project for a little while. So, I'll be continuing this project in two weeks. But for those who can't wait here are a few pics of what I've done so far. These are a few of the roof models. There will be much more when it's all finished. The models are not yet included with textures.

:) Hi everyone, here's a little preview of how a curved roof will look like. The roof on the image below has the size of one square in RCT3, also the roof looks a little bit blocky right now but that's because of the colours I added and because the image is so big. The roof looks actually really smooth in the game itself. There will also be different roof borders/trims that you can add to all the roofs that I'm going to make. The roof borders/trims will have all sorts of decorations on them.

And the texture I added to the roof on the image below is off course not the texture that I'm really using, it is a test texture, that's what I always do first before adding the texture that I'm really going to use.

http://img385.imageshack.us/img385/5397/roofcurvededge2mr.jpg

And by the way, thanks everybody for the replies. It gives me and I also think other scenery creators a good feeling when other people are interested in what they're making :D Eventually, we're all doing this for the community.

Don't really like that texture imo. Although i can't really tell because the colours are pretty dark like you said.

I would have thought a Chinese building would have roofing like This (http://www.mayang.com/textures/perl/fullsize.pl?category=Architectural/Roofing&image=tiles_with_skylight_221709.JPG)

I'm really interested in the direction you could take with this set. If you include the correct use of lighting, you could create something really special.

Actually, this (http://www.sln.org.uk/geography/images/SLN@Malaysia2005/Richard%20and%20Bob/Chinese%20temple%20161.jpg) is how Chinese roofs look like but the texture is very difficult to make and especially because you can only make 256-indexed bitmap textures.

I think the texture is a little bit to dark, but apart from this, it looks good for me. It's difficult to say, how it looks, if you just see one tile in different colors. We have to wait, until Coaster Phantom had different building parts complete and show us the first nearly completed roof.

Keep on doing your great job. It's nice to see some asian stuff for RCT3. My brother gp-net has created the "Asia Additions Set" for RCT2. Maybe some of you has used it in your RCT2-parks.

I'll reserve some space in my Shrek-Park until' your set is ready for a small chinese restaurant, where peeps can eat "Eyeballs with Ginger" or "Spiced Rat Skewer" :D :D .

Hi all, I'm still working on correct textures for the roofs, I have some problems making them because of the recolorability. I think I'm using the right colors but everytime I save it as a 256 indexed bitmap it looks like crap and sometimes the recolorability doesn't work or the texture is too dark or the recolorability works but for the things that musn't be recolorable. Oh, the drama...but at least all the models for the roofs are finished. If there are some experienced texturemakers reading this, please, can you give me some tips so work will be easier.

Thanks, CP

Your textures may be too dark cause they're not alligned properly. To check this, watch as the sun crosses the sky. They should be very bright when the sun is shining on them and then get darker as the sun sets behind them. If this isn't the case, then you'll need to fix this. And don't ask me how unless you're using 3d max. :p

Guybrush_47
02-06-2006, 06:41 AM
Aye, alot of creating terrian is finding out where they have to be alligned. It took me about 3 hours to work out why the lighting was screwed on my objects.

For some reason, Atari decided to rotate some of the objects, and because they rotated them, and you may not have. The sunlight will be hitting incorrectly. I.E. Shadow when it should be Bright.

Try rotating your model 90 degrees. You should see a lighting difference. What i suggest you do, is place a RCT3 roof piece next to yours, see if the lighting is the same (look at early morning, it shouild go really bright). Take a screenshot, rotate your object in your 3d program by 90 degrees. Export and repeat same process. Stop when your lighting is correct.

No, no, this project is definately not cancelled. I only didn't have the time to work on it, I've been extremely busy the last few weeks and I will be busy for quite a while. I don't know when I can proceed on this project, it could be in one or two months. And I also have a little problem with the recolorable textures, they don't work how I want them to, so I got stuck on that. The problem is that the textures are not detailed enough because of the use of a 256-indexed bitmap. If there's someone who could help me with creating detailed recolorable textures I would be pleased.

While the forums are tight on old thread policies, they might be more lenient here because of the time and effort it generally takes to create new scenery. It ain't easy at all to get it working the proper way.

Well, I began with the hardest roof part of them all. I got it in the game but the textures look really sucky. Everytime I convert it to a 256-indexed bitmap the texture gets messed up and looks really dark and low quality. Could somebody help me with those textures, how do I make them look good? Ending this post I want to thank stuk71 for the provided texture for the roof!

You're using Paint to convert the textures...

Use a photo program capable of indexing the colors- MS Photo Editor should work (comes with MS Word and MS Office)

You might try using Paint Shop Pro- I have been using the demo version and decided to buy it anyway. A good program to have...

@ Vodhin: Thanks for the help, I also have Photoshop but I can't find the option where I can save the texture as a 256-indexed bitmap. When I try to save it as a bitmap I only have the ability to choose how many bits I want, but I can't choose an option that says: save as a 256-indexed bitmap. Do you know how to do it?

@ Weasel: I'm sorry weasel but I need a 256-indexed bitmap, png does only work in the importer for the icons. Thanks anyway!

In Photoshop if you look up at the top click on "image", then click on index color and it will open a box and you can select 256 and mode you want to use. Then save as a bitmap file.

May I suggest adding in a straight roof piece instead of it all being corners?

@Spiltink: Thanks! :D

@live_the_thrill: This is not the only piece that will be in the set. You can find the list of pieces a few posts back :)

Coaster Phantom.... The textures I gave you were already 256 bitmaps, ready to import you don't need to do anything to them... [?]

Would have been ideal for last weeks Battle of the Forums... hopefully this hasn't turned out to be another of those promising looking sets only to be abandoned.

This set needs to be finished, hopefully if Coaster Phantom won't do it, he can pass it off to someone who will, the need for oriental scenery is immense.

I see no reason to ressurect all the asian-related old threads to make a little adverstising for your own project.

You should be careful, that you're not reported to the mods for this kind of spamming.
