[tutorial] HOW to install custom scenery on my RCT3?

There are so many people got the error, however i would like to make a thread about how to install proper. maybe sticky this thread will be useful.


Step 1. Where I download to?.

Just download to desktop and move to *Drive Letter*:\Program Files\Atari\RollerCoaster Tycoon® 3\Style\Themed

or direct to this 'Themed' folder.

Step 2. How to extract the ZIP or RAR file.

Extracting the ZIP archive is possible in Windows XP, by Open this Zip file by double click to open, then click 'Extract all files' the left side menu of explorer.

With WinZip installed, it is also possible to extract the contents of a ZIP archive file.
To begin, right mouse button click on the ZIP file and extract here.

With WinRAR installed, it is possible to extract the RAR/ZIP archive.
To begin, right mouse button click on the RAR file and extract here.

With WinAce installed, You can extract the many type inc ZIP archive.
To begin, right mouse button click on this archive and 'Extract to...'

If you dont have WinZip or WinRAR
WinZip (http://www.winzip.com/)
WinRAR (http://www.rarlab.com/)

Other programs you can use with ZIP or other compession file.
www.powerarchiver.com - free
www.picozip.com
www.winace.com

If this custom scenery pack is EXE file, then you dont have to worry to extract.

Step 3. How to stop the SID error or crash my game?.

IMPORTANT CHECK THE FOLDER
If this folders aren't right in structured, then you will get the error.

Open this folder you have extracted/installed and you should find a folder (or sometime there might have more than one folder like DRP's lightz pack) and two files with the style ovl extension.

All the custom scenery folder should be look like this: (my custom slide support)

If error, then move to the right structure.

Once it is working, You may can delete the ZIP RAR or EXE of custom scenery or save it as backup.

I'm not sure about Winace, but it's probably the same as Winzip. I use Powerarchiver & it works the same. It can be downloaded at the link below & it's a free program.

Yes, I can extract files with it by right clicking and click on "Extract to..." or the icon above. I am having trouble with screenshots because it's too big and "Microsoft Word" won't resize it.
There is no Term of Service when I install it. Ad-Aware SE Personal I have on my PC would tell if it's a dangerous or unreliable program.

Still confused. I downloaded Iceatcs files and also Shyguy's Mainstreet packs 1, 2, 3, as well as Expo 3000. I keep getting errors though and the game is crashing. Your instructions Iceatcs aren't very clear to me. Could you possibly explain them again or PM me? Thanks!

I don't understand... I have mine setup like it should be, and I still get the no svd for sid error on many things. The main one is that Disfan's Tables and Blinds. I use 7zip.

Edit: Never mind. I got it to work, all I had to do was drag all the stuff out of the folder marked Disfan's Tables and Blinds.

The weird thing is it works the first time I open up a new park and use it, but then once I save the park and try to open it up again everytime i try to click on the scenery button the game closes and a window pops up saying RCT3 has dificulties running and had to close. Ok I have been messing with this for about 4 days now and I can not figure out what Im doing wrong..As I stated in a previous post the scenery works fine when I first use it, but then if I save the park and open it up again and try to use any scenery the game closes.. I follow all of the steps given to install the custom scenery.. this is an example of what I did to instal J-cats Steel Worx
- I downloaded the files at trackworx.com (this is the manuel install)
- the winzip window opens containing the file
- I extraxted the file to my desktop.
- Then I dragged that file to c:\Program files\Atari\RollerCoaster Tycoon 3\style\themed

So can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong so I can save my work and then be able to work on it at a later time without my game closing.

Make sure there isn't a read me file along with the scenery folder. Once you extract the folder, open it up and make sure there isn't, if there is, just drag the scenery folder, not folder that contains the scenery and the readme. If that makes any sense...

I take it you're looking in your "My Documents" folder.

You have to look in your "Program Files" folder for "Atari" -- in there should be a folder called "Style."

I have Rct3, Soaked and Wild! (europe versions!)
only got errors with a few scenery packs, like the vermont theme, vodhin light pack 2 (updated version), Rockwork and Animated Striplights!
Other scenery will install like the vodhin light pack 2 (old version).

Is there anything I can do about this, as all these scenery packs are working in a Gold version of Rct3 (some people told me)

Carefully follow the instruction in regards to the folder structure. Probably your unzip program has added an additional directory level.

If you are getting the no svd for sid error, there is a video tutorial for installing custom scenery, it's most likely to be the person installing it wrong.

The reason I ask is that on checking this set on my computer, the folder name under Style/Themed is "VodinsCafeKit", and is NOT "Cafe Tables" as shown on your screenshot.

Upon double clicking that I have the two OVL files (style.com and style.unique) plus FIVE folders (Accoutriments, Buffet, Iron Works, Shared, and Table Sets)...you show only "Table Sets", however, inside your "Table Sets" you have all the same files that I have in FIVE folders.

I'm wondering if either you have renamed and/or combined files - if so, you can not do that...these have SPECFIC paths the game follows to locate the file...change it and they don't work. If you haven't renamed or changed anything, then I would remove this folder and download a new one from Vodin's site because I think that's where your problem is. I could be wrong (wouldn't be the first time), but what you have installed on your computer doesn't look right.

Observant of you...although you missed the fact that this was written back in January...of 2006. And you missed the fact that this IS one of the 3 or 4 already in the Tutorial Thread - the link on that Tutorial thread takes you right to THIS thread. :p

The thing to remember is that the game engine is designed so it follows a specific path to access each scenery file. If that path is altered - by placing the file in the wrong spot or extra files being created - the game is unable to access the file.

The most common error is where an extra folder holding the CS files is created. The way to check for this is to navigate to where Scenery folders are stored. Most people will know how to access this, but I'll lay out the steps for those who may not be sure:

If you are running XP, you probably have an icon on your desktop called "MyComputer", double-click that icon to open.

Most people have the game installed on it's default position, so find where it lists your hard drives and find "(C: )", double-click on that entry to open.

Now you need to find a folder named "Program Files", again double-click to open.

Among the individual folders should be one labeled "Atari", go ahead and double-click to open.

Inside you'll find the folder for "RollerCoaster Tycoon 3", open that.

Inside are lot's of files and folders required in the game, scroll down and find the one labeled "Style", double-click to open it.

Customs Scenery goes in the folder entitled "Themed", yep, go ahead and open that one too.

Here you will see all the different scenery folders - in-game and custom. This is where you place your custom scenery folders. Find the folder for the set you are having problems with and open it.

This is the important part, as soon as you open that folder you will see one or more files or folders that are the actual individual object files PLUS there should be two OVL files...one named Style.common and the other Style.unique.

Those two OVL files MUST be there for your CS to function properly. That's where the path the game follows to access them says they must be. If they aren't, then usually an extra folder has been created during the zip process.

If the two OVL files are missing, is there instead just a folder with the name of the scenery set on it present?

I thought so. Go ahead and open that folder. Chances are when you open it you'll find those two missing OVL files plus the actual sscenery files/folders.

What's this mean? Well, the path the game is looking for when you see those two OVL files is C:\Program Files\Atari\RollerCoaster Tycoon 3\Style\Themed\Set (you can see the path up at the top of your screen).

The path if there's an extra folder will show C:\Program Files\Atari\RollerCoaster Tycoon 3\Style\Themed\Set\Set. Note how that folder at the end appears twice? We need to get rid of that extra layer. It's simple to do...

Find the folder that holds the two OVL files (along with the actual object files/folders that were there with them.) and drag that entire folder to your desktop.

Now in Style\Themed you should have a folder with the name of the set that is empty. Delete that extra folder.

Now you can drag the correct folder (the one with the two OVL files) from your desktop back into Style\Themed. That should make the path correct for the game to access the objects and the set should now work.

How does an extra layer get formed by mistake? Well, there's several ways but one way to make sure it doesn't occur is to always unzip new CS set's to your desktop FIRST, and then find the correct folder (with the two OVL files) and drag it to your Style\Themed folder yourself. If the CS set comes with an .exe file, I always change the destination to have it go to my desktop as well.

The SID doenst help me at all. I dont have my CS in a folder, its all just saved here : F:\Programme Files\Atari\RollerCoaster Tycoon 3\Style\Themed. Thats for all of it, No subfolders or anything, I cant sort thwem out like yours, And i dont have acces to ANY of them

Sorry, but they MUST have folders in order to work, and the folders wouldn't just disappear when you installed them. What about the folders of in-game scenery? Are they there?

If you took stuff out of the folders when installing them, then I don't see anything you can do other than to un-install the game, delete the loose custom scenery files that left in Style\Themed, and then start all over again but doing it correctly after you read and follow the instructions show in several of the stickied tutorials here.

Where are you looking?

If you are looking in MyDoucuments, that's the wrong place. Instead click on MyComputer, the look for the "C" drive (if you installed it in the default place), look for ProgramFiles, then Find Atari. Inside of Atari will be a folder for RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, open that and scroll down to find Style. Themed is inside of it.

Do you use a pc or a Mac? If a pc do you have XP or Vista? If Vista are you using the Admin account?

When you installed RCT3 on that computer, did you install it in the default place (drive C:) - or did you install it on another drive?

I don't really see how this helps with the sid error. I'm having a lot of trouble with it, and after re-re-reading, I still don't understand.

OK, i have no idea what im doing wrong. Half the CS i download work right away, but then other times i get the SVD error, or w.e its called. You said move the 2nd title or sumthing to the right of the structure? what does that mean?

umm dont double post it a rule you will learn as i see you are new now to udo it press the edit button now make sure that you open it again the folder that is then paste it that should do it
