Hey all. Just finished reading the latest Anime Insider.

They say that Media Blasters is releasing Voltron on DVD in September. It will be available in eight 3 DVD sets with 15! episodes each (120 episodes).

www.voltronDVD.com for more info.

BTW what is up with all the September releases? We get Godzilla, Tenchi, Star Wars, Voltron, Lost, etc. I might have to get another job just to afford all this cool stuff coming out!

Also they are going to release the ORIGINAL UNCUT versions of the TWO shows that made up Voltron next year.

The two shows are: (and I quote).

Hundred Beast King Five Lion: Go-Lion (the robot) is a space warlord struck down by a goddess for his arrogance and split into five robot lions, which end up in stasis on planet Althea. His five human pilots are the last survivors of a war that destroyed Earth in 1999 (obviously we are still here). Darker and considerably more violent than the Voltron we remember.

Armored Fleet Dairugger XV: The Earthlings are on peaceful missions of exploration, but they run afoul of the evil Drule empire and must fight for their lives in 15 high-tech vehicles. This series had a complex political storyline involving the Alliance and the Drule, and featured a massive body count.

Maybe if these are popular we will finally see the much talked about (and produced as a toy) THIRD Voltron on DVD in the USA. Which was comprised of THREE robots that combined into one Six-Armed robot. :weird:

Plus the rumors of a LIVE-ACTION Voltron and a NEW Cartoon! :D

I personally hope that a certain other Anime show gets a similar treatment IF the movie gets made. I am speaking of Star Blazers (aka Space Battleship Yamato). Which (if you can find it) only has THREE shows per DVD (this show was at least 3 years long and had at least 156 episodes) which is really annoying to watch. Cause you WILL lose interest before you get to the end.

Ah gosh...you must have not been a teen or adolescent in the eighties Titano, because its hard to find those from the eighties who don't know about Voltron. Even our parents know about Voltron because they endured us hollering "GO VOLTRON FORCE!!!" And all the pressure they felt from us teens & adolescents demanding Voltron collectibles as presents and other stuff.

Here is a piccy:

Here is the anime's opening intro...Caution, watch for goose bumps for those who remember it :p iC_Z-ebp9Es&search

Voltron had a cool pop-rock theme too. That was part of its appeal. The eighties was a time known for original and creative music. Not many other times that I have known within the past 30 years has turned out music so poignant. Voltron was like the predecessors to the Power Rangers as they had the colors, and similar color assignments for suits (red is for the leader, pink is the girl, green for the smarty pants, black for the lone wolfs, etc.) and their lion machines would come together to form the robot you see in the picture. They battle kaiju like creatures called Roe (Ro) beasts.

Later on, Voltron also became a space ship/vehicle oriented show and the battles took place in outerspace and on other planets/moons.

Here is a piccy:
http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/4055/votronspace1xn.png (http://imageshack.us)

And here is the specific intro for that show: E3GLqGdPdPg

The shows were popular and sold lots of action figures, toys, clothes you name it. Which the show even had where the Voltron lion people met up with the Voltron space ship people and fought their combined enemies together. That has even been done on some Power Rangers shows. Yes, those were the days. My brother was a bigger Voltron fan than I was, but my overall favorite was Mighty Orbots. Sadly my favorite wasn't as popular. All I have left is something at You Tube that reminds me of what used to be. I have a linkey for you:

I remember some 700 Club type of show that had clips og Voltron and Transformers and the hosts of the show were deciding which show was more harmful to kids. The result was Transformers. Had Voltron not been so heavily edited, I think Transformers would have won

Sorry Keith, don't keep up with Sci-Fi Japan as well as I should.

BTW Tim the announcer on those Voltron videos you found sounds familiar!
I know...it's Peter Cullen the voice of Optimus Prime in Transformers Generation 1! He was also King Alfor, Coran, & Commander Hawkins in Voltron.

I own the Trendmasters Voltron Lion toy. The new one from Toynami is rather pricey. I wish I could find the Vehicle one for cheap.

I think I recall Mighty Orbots. It was not on very long.

I think I still have a VHS of a couple of Voltus V episodes, Here is a pic of the robot from that.

Trying to find pics of the Third Voltron (which was never made into a Voltron show) is rather hard. The show they were going to use was Light Speed Electric God Albegas. There are some pics here
http://www.zincpanic.com/character/3609.html. (Click on the pics to the right) of the various robots. I think the first one is the combined form (which I guess does NOT have 6 arms).

BTW since the USA is on kind of an "old-school" Anime "Run". With Gatchaman, Macross, and now Voltron. Why no Tranzor Z (Mazinger Z), Starvengers (Getter Robo), or Gai King? I know they are making a revamped version of Gai King. Also they made re-vamped versions of Mazinger Z (Mazinkaiser), & Getter Robo (Shin Getter Robo). I want the Originals! on DVD!

It also would be nice to get the entire run of Voltus V (Choudenji Machine Voltes V) on DVD.

Anybody remember THIS one? Thundersub!

Anybody else got one they want to see?

Yeah I noticed that. He did quite a few voiceovers back then.

Yes they came back and with a bang in the price department. :p Thing about it, I used to have the yellow, green and blue lions long ago. My first cousin ended up getting the whole set of them and made the large Voltron. I used to have the smaller die-cast one. NO SEPARATION of the lions. :( I guess we ran mom ragged on the Kenner Star Wars stuff long ago. She said we had quite a few "toys". :haha: We had LOTS of Star Wars stuff. Enough to open a store. Too bad we didn't keep it all, as the original Kenner stuff can fetch big dollars in value. Like Princess Lei that had the Bespin outfit was valued at $1,000.00 about 10 years ago, and we used to have 3 of those. Blah!!! That would have been $3,000.00 on eBay. :( :(

I think I recall Mighty Orbots. It was not on very long.
Nah it wasn't long. About 13 episodes. I don't know why it didn't do too well. It had action and even better anime color effect graphics over Voltron. :(

OMGosh!!!! You know I saw that picture tonight at a Super Walmart on a $1.00 DVD in a bargin bin. They had a few of those. You better check your local Wal-Mart and Super Walmarts.

There was a 3rd Voltron?! Hmmm...I kind of don't remember that, but then again it vaguely comes back to me. I have to click the link to see it.

EDIT: After clicking the link, I don't remember those machines.

They were thinking about making a third Voltron. It was never made, but the toys DID come out under the Voltron label. I bought one of them the first time I went to Disney World (About 20 years ago). In a store in Futureland. All they had were the smaller versions of the Lions/Vehicle ones, and this one (I think it was the blue one). They had all 3, but they were like $20 each, which at the time was a bit too much for me.

I avoid Wal-Mart as much as possible, cause they are EVIL!

How about Thundersub? Anybody recall that one?

No cause they run small businesses (or even sometimes large businesses) out of business by undercutting their prices. Plus the people who work there are treated like crap. Just ask Mr. Walmart (if he posts again).

Anyhow, Thundersub, if I remember right was a show similar to Star Blazers. Except they had a Submarine (which also was a spaceship & aircraft carrier). It fought off invaders from space, using a weapon very similar to the Wave Motion Gun in Star Blazers. It was not on very long, maybe one season. I think they showed it on a competitor channel. The reason I watched it, is cause the lineup on one channel was this. (I think)

Star Blazers
Capt. Harlock & The Queen of 1000 Worlds (which I did not like)
Tranzor Z
Voltron

The other channel had

Gobots (also did not really like)
Thundersub
etc. (Can't recall what was on there this was about 1984 or so).

I thought Gobots was a very weird show. Very weird for transforming robots. I never saw Captain Harlock, but he had a kick butt looking space ship. :D I used to like Tranzor Z. My brother used to watch it with me so we could laugh at the Aprhodite robot when it fired missles ;)

Captain Harlock is from the same guy who did the Anime version of Star Blazers. Also did Galazy Express 999, Queen Esmereldas, and Intestella 5555.

The reason I did not like the show is cause it was dull. Later I learned they took two shows and combined them into one. The shows were Captain Harlock (aka Captain Herlock), and Queen Esmereldas.

I liked the Go-Bot toys, but the show was a bit odd. Definately not as cool as Transformers. BTW some of the original toys for BOTH Transformers and Go-Bots were made by the same company.

Yes I remember that. Hey do you remember Cykill, then renegade leader? Well I remember when they were doing some toy interpretations in the model kits, they used the Mospeda cyclone armour and rider unit for Cykill, and the leader on the good side (whose name I forget) used a "white" colored Jupiter Base Alpha fighter. Odd. The model kit was done by Revell at the time. And we all know the Jet Fire in the toy form (for the Transformers show) was nothing more than a Veritech Fighter from Robotech.

Hey since we are still talking anime, did you ever see Appleseed?

EricDent
05-29-2006, 02:26 AM
I think I saw a few of those models in the past. I can't recall seeing Appleseed.

I have seen Akira, Castle Caligstro (Lupin 3rd), Robotech, Macross Do You Remember Love, Macross II, Macross Plus, Ninja Scroll, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Spirited Away, Castle In The Sky, and a whole mess of Anime Shows too numerous to name.

BTW did you know that "The Flying House" a famous Christian cartoon is an Anime?

Speaking off giant robots though how about this one.

Neither have I, but they are selling the Appleseed DVD now. It was available in the early 1990's, but I never picked it up. I was buying Robotech VHS tapes then. Though with it being available again, I might see what its about. :)

I saw several of those you mentioned. Though for me, my favorite animes have been Gunbuster, Robotech (all generations), Macross Do You Remember Love, Macross Plus the Movie, Wolf's Rain (quite nice ;)), Vampire Hunter D (quite mature), Gundam Seed, Dragon Ball Z ( I didn't care too much for GT), and Last Exile. Last Exile gets my nod for a very respectable anime. Not many like it and it's very dramatic. In some ways it could try and surpass Robotech for military drama. I also loved that opening theme song. I actually had a sigh of relief at the end to see Sophia visiting the grave of Capt. Alex, and then see the Silvana ship manuever close by. Macross Do You Remember love stands out mostly where Hikaru and Misa were trapped on that desolate planet and they had to rough it for a while. Misa was so much alone. :(. The other part was at the end where Hikaru (in his battloid) saluted Misa on the bridge of the Macross and zoomed in to get the Zentreadi leader. Misa was taking the huge battle fortress in to do the job, but Hikaru beat her there. Minmei sang a very powerful song, and to see Hikaru burst through the hologram screens and take aim with all weapons was a moving and powerful scene. Man talk about the memories.

yes I did hear that, but I haven't caught those on tv.

I saw the commercial about those, and I wonder how it is. Though some evenings I haven't turned the tv on. Unless I know something is coming on that I really wanted to see, and it seems I have been watching more of my movies than anything. I watch movies sometimes if I am on the computer doing some work. It would be nice if my laptop had the tv tuner capability. Then I know I would be glued to the lcd screen for sure. LOL!!!

Speaking of female inspired anime main characters, did you ever see Bubblegum Crisis? They wore suits of armour similar to the Robotech 3rd generation Mospeda bike suits, but they were all girls.

It's very good, very '70s giant robot show. They fight giant monsters called Mimetic Beasts. There are several different teams of Robot Pilots, from each country. Each of them has some sort of "tension" going on between the two pilots of each robot.

China-A huge guy (think Lunk) and a Chun-Li looking girl avoid saying they love each other.

UK-A brother & sister team, the brother "yearns" for his sister (weird).

Russia-A Dominatrix like woman & her "Slave" who is in love with her.

Japan-(The Main Characters) A guy named Goh who saved a 14 year old girl named Anna and maried her 2 years later, who's old partner (Mira, who was also his lover) died and comes back to life. Also the guy's boss Kiriko is Anna's mom, and Anna's brother lives with them in a rather small apartment.

No country-a mysterious loner with a really powerful mecha, draws the attention (and possible love) of the daughter of a Space commander who gets killed. She is like 12 or so I think.

As you can see this show is rather weird, but if you can get past all the "interesting" bits, it has really cool mecha action. Plus the US VA of Anna (the wife of Goh) is the same woman who does stuff like Chrono Crusade (Sister Rossette Christopher), and other roles.

Another couple of series I got into recently are:

Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok: Loki (the Norse god of Mischief) is punished by Odin and sent to Earth as a kid. He opens up a Detective Agency, which is joined by a young Teenage girl. His man-servant is really his "son" the World-Eating snake, and is joined later by his other "son" Fenrir the Wolf. Thor, Heimdall, Frey & Freya (who is in love with Loki & is turned into a little girl), are all Teenagers (or younger). It is a mix of Norse legends, comedy, and supernatural happenings.

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/loki-ragnarok-dvd-1.jpg

All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku (both the OVA & TV series): About a scientist who makes an android and decided to make it with a cat's brain. She goes around fighting the "Evil" corporation Mishima who wants to take over the world. They just go about it in rather odd ways. It is a mix of over the top comedy and action. Her owner is a young kid named Renoskae (or something like that).

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/NukuNuku.jpg

In the TV series Nuku Nuku goes to school with some rather interesting people. A singer, who sings to say stuff like "La La LaLa, School is really fun, now let's go outside and play in the sun". A bookworm, who only talks TWICE during the whole series. A rich girl, who has Twin underlings that constantly follow her around, and say "That's Right, That's Right, What She said is right". A "pretty-boy", who is also athletic. A "normal" girl, who is Nuku's best friend, when trouble happens she breaks out her whistle and bosses everyone around like a drill instructor (her ENTIRE family are the Class Representatives at their school/job). The other 2 people are a Scientist who invents stuff & studies stuff constantly, and a girl who is OBSESSED with the Occult/Mysticism.

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/TV.jpg

Recently got the All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku Dash set: In this version Nuku Nuku is blond (she is a red-head in the other 2 shows). She is created as a weapon to stop her more powerful "big sister". She is programed to protect all life. Also the show is a bit more romantic, cause the kid Renoskae, is now 14 (Nuku Nuku looks about 19). Renoskae really likes Nuku Nuku. Then he sees her Alter-ego (he does not figure out who it is until the final episode) in action and falls for her as well. He calls her "Super Sexy". This program is also a bit more dramatic. Also the ending is a bit of a tear-jerker.

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/dash.jpg

Also have been catching a few episodes of Eureka 7 on Cartoon Network, not sure if I like it or not. It's sort of odd.

Nope must have missed the Robot Chicken Voltron skit. I have seen a few Transformers ones, they are really funny!

They did a few takeoffs of Voltron in shows like Megas XLR, Dexter's Lab, and Fairly Oddparents (I think).

Speaking of Robot Chicken, the most hilarious one I think is the Scooby Doo one. Where Velma "gets some action".

Heh-heh sorry for getting off topic but,
. BTW what is up with all the September releases? We get Godzilla, Tenchi, Star Wars, Voltron, Lost, etc. I might have to get another job just to afford all this cool stuff coming out!

Tenchi? As in Tenchi Myuo? I don't know where I've been but, is it true? Please tell me it is true! And Star Wars! What about it. Are they re-releasing it again? Tell me. Please oh please tell me it is true!!!!

EricDent
06-06-2006, 01:38 AM
Well the Tenchi Muyo! thing I am referring to is the 3rd OVA series (the other 2 are on the 13 episode series on DVD called Tenchi Muyo!) called Tenchi Muyo! Ryo Ohki. The first of 3 volumes came out LAST year around September. The Funimation company got bought by someone recently. And they wanted to make sure to get most of the USA voice actors back for the other 2 volumes (one comes out in September, the other in November). They said that there will be special bonuses for making us wait for so long.

As for Star Wars, yep Lucas is doing it again. This time though it will be the Original Un-altered versions of A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi on DVD. For a limited time only (Sept. 11th-Dec. 31 2006). They are 2 disc editions, which also include the "Special Editions" of the films on the 2nd Disc. They are sold separately for about $30 each.

I also picked up All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku Dash. It is a little more drama-based than the other 2 series were. Also is a bit more romantic, cause the kid in the other 2 series is 14 in this show. Pretty good deal for 12 episodes & a Manga for $45 (the Manga is marked as $15 by itself)

Even more Anime fun!

Warning this title is rated MA! Also it's rather wacky & weird!

A "Magical Girl" type show (Like Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, etc.)

Also Really LONG description alert!

UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie: In the near future humans build a space bridge. Aliens come & visit Earth. They have a strict policy to adapt to another planets culture. A princess of the Planet Valhalla, named Valkyrie, is fed up with arranged marriage proposals to stuck-up, lazy, good-for-nothing princes. So she runs away on her royal UFO. These UFOs can go anywhere they want, unlike normal space travel vehicles, who much like Airplanes today follow set flight paths. Anyways, she accidentally crashes into a Japanese Bath House, run by Kazuto Tokino. This kills Kazuto, so sort-of like Ultraman, she gives him half her soul (which she describes as "The most precious thing a girl can give to a boy"). This turns her into a 8 year old girl (she is normally 18). The princess has a rival, another princess named Hydra, who wants to take her back to their planet. Hydra crashes her ship into a local shrine. The shrine is run by a girl who has a crush on Kazuto (although he is too dense to figure it out), she does NOT get killed. However to stop Hydra's rampage, she uses her Shrine Maiden powers to seal Hydra's power, also turning Hydra into an 8 year old girl. Whenever trouble arises, Valkyrie kisses Kazuto, and transforms back into her normal body like Sailor Moon. This transformation, Hydra's transformation, and Liane's Transformation & the bath house scenes are what make this show rated MA, cause there is lots of nudity. Hydra also can transform back into her normal body if the Shrine Maiden releases the seal (temporarily). Later in the show yet another princess shows up named Liane, she has the body-size of a 10 year-old (short) but is rather well-endowed. She has the ability to transform to mimic other people, the only two quirks about her transformation, are 1: She retains her antenna (she is an Alien), and 2: She retains her rather naughty mind set. Also in the cast are Kazuto's younger sister (middle school aged girl), Spot (an alien dog-like creature who can talk), who Val (Valkyrie's nickname) constantly pesters by pulling his ears, and riding him around. Also Miss Sanada, who was Valkyries servant, comes to Earth. She is a Cat-Girl, and is rather possessive of the princess. She thinks cause Kazuto shares a soul with the princess that they are finances. She goes out of her way to prevent ANY other girl from getting Kazuto by using a special ray-gun that transforms girls into Cat-Girls (there are about 100 or so pretty shortly), they work for free at the bath house. The bath house is rather popular with aliens, cause the luxury of hot-water is normally regulated to just a shower, and they LOVE baths!

Sorry this is rather long, but it was kind of hard to explain unless you watch it, or have a long description of the show.

Any body else have a favorite Anime they want to share? Since Godzilla is in hibernation, and Gamera 4 is a ways off from DVD land.

BTW Tim if you like Military Drama so much, you REALLY should check out Mobile Suit Gundam & it's infinite spin-offs & movies. It has military intrigue, giant robots, and rather young ace-pilots. It was made originally in the late '60s. Also Macross is kind-of a knock-off of MS Gundam, cause the creator of Macross really liked Gundam.

Here is another one I picked up:

Happy Lesson

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/happy_lesson.jpg

About a teenage boy who's parent's die & leave him their HUGE house. 5 of his high school teacher's decide to take up the job of being his "mother". So they all go live with him. Each one has a different "quirk". 1: His homeroom teacher, is the cook, and by changing her outfit/accent becomes his "tutor" making him study like crazy. 2: His gym-teacher, is a real tough-as nails type, and makes all her students train like crazy, she likes practicing her wrestling moves on him. 3: His Art teacher, looks about 12 years old, wears anime Cos-play outfits all the time, and asks him to play balet with her. 4: The school nurse, who is also into mysticism, tries to ease his stress by chanting/purifiying everything, all the boys at school want to be sick so that she can "cure" them. 5: His chemistry teacher, she likes to make weird inventions and try them out on him.
Also he has a admirer, the class president has a huge crush on him (but he does not care). He also has 2 "sisters", he used to live in a foster home & addopted 2 girls as his sisters. They later are "adopted" by the 5 "moms", but they live somewhere else. Also the Chemistry teacher had a friend, who is a girl, they planned to "conquer" the world, but the teacher changed her mind. The girl soon meets the guy & she falls in love with him, but he does not notice.

If this seems familiar sounding, it is. There are several animes called "harem" anime, cause they feature 1 clueless/bumbling/goofy guy surrounded by attractive females who all "love" him in some way.

Included in this catagory of anime are:
Tenchi Muyo! (all the various series & movies)
Dual! Parrellel Trouble Adventure
ETC. (quite a few, cause it is a bit of a fantasy for guys to be with more than one girl @ a time).

That anime description in post number 32 seems a bit fun. And yes, more and more anime are having nude scenes. To the Japanese, anime is a work of art, and they can do some things in anime they can't do for the same price in live action (especially all the mecha oriented stories). I remeber watching an anime once that was about a mech pilot who took on several ace pilots. The show was in the flavor of Escaflowne and Gundam mixed. I wished I could remember what it was. I do remember seeing it on VHS where I rented it from my local Hollywood Video store. They have however scaled down almost all the VHS copies to a bare minimal.

I became familiar with Orgus through video rental.

Eric if you had the choice to be a pilot in any mecha from any anime, which would it be?

I am caught between 3 things, the Cyclone bike armor of Robotech, Gunbuster and also Orgus 4 mode mecha. You know there is an Orgus 2 saga, which I haven't seen, but I need to locate.

Great stuff guys, I hope my budget can hold up while I read through here. Some of those anime discs are like 50 bucks a pop here in Canada. I have recently run across a cgi Anime called Malice Doll which is great if you can stomach the small amount of tentacular insertion in it. A cleaner anime that I have gotten hooked on, a tv show in Japan that came out on DVD called Haibane Renmei about these angel like creatures living in servitude in this strange town run by the ghostlike humanoids in masks, might be something worth watching.

I admit as well that Shonen jump's onepiece is enchanting.

Anybody know where a guy can get his hands on the Thundercats series? And anybody watch Astroboy as much as I did? The very first anime ever! and the best!!

Astroboy is one I missed sadly.

Welcome to the forum Master of None. :)

As far as a place to buy Thundercats..."I can take care of that".

MOVIES UNLIMITED CLICKEY (http://www.moviesunlimited.com/musite/findresults_title.asp?mscssid=RJWXA2RVQSFE8NU8WMLJ41NM3AFSB877)

Deep Discount DVD (http://search.deepdiscountdvd.com/search?p=Q&ts=custom&w=Thundercats)

Walmart Clickey (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/search-ng.gsp?search_constraint=4096&search_query=Thundercats&ic=20_0)

These places probably will ship to Canada. Just check in the shopping cart procession for shipping. I know shipping is free at Deep Discount, but I don't know how it applies to Canadian residents.

I must say again Welcome to the Godzilla board at Atari. We also have another Canadian member who stops in from time to time. His screen name is DaremoAlpha.

Astroboy is coming out on DVD soon. I think it's either availible in July or September. Or maybe I saw it recently @ Best Buy....Try looking!

I have heard Canada is rather expensive, but at least you still get Health Care free? (Or do you still?)

If you think Live Action can't get away with nudity, then obviously you have never seen the live action version of Cutey Honey. Which I have not, except for the DVD covers...WEIRD! All she wears is a mask & a scarf, how the heck did they pull that off?

As for the Mecha question, I always wanted to pilot a Veritech.

That show you described sounds like G-Gundam, where a bunch of Gundams meet in a tournament. It is an alternate universe to the other Gundam series. Or perhaps if it was in outer space, then it could have been Pilot Candidate. I am not certain though, could you be a little clearer?

I might have to hold off on purchasing any anime in the future, due to some $ issues.

It's never late for Anime!

Here is an older title that I got awhile ago.

Metal Fighter Miku

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/metal.jpg

About a 4 member all girl tag team of Pro Wrestlers. They are competing for a shot at the title holder Aquamarine. The leader of the team gets the shot, if they win. Miku is the leader of the team called the Pretty Four. They have a rivalry with a team called the Moonlight Saphires led by Saphire (who is really the daughter of the wrestling league owner). Here is the catch of the show, the teams (all of the teams are all female BTW) all wear some sort of version of a power suit. The Pretty Four have gotten a new trainer, the guy who trained (and loved) Aquamarine. The only problem he has is the bottle. By the end of the series, Miku fights Aquamarine, and figures out that wrestlers don't need power suits to perform amazing feats.

Hey guys, don't let me hog the spotlight all the time, please feel free to describe or discuss your favorite Anime shows. But, please no naughty stuff! (AKA Hentai)  :weird: :weird:   !

BTW I was looking @ youtube today for the Transformers trailer (which had moved), and saw some scenes from the Live-Action Sailor Moon (mostly the transformations of the Sailor Scouts). It looked kind of silly, but might be good for a laugh. BTW the girls wear a body suit during the transformations (so you don't see anything offensive). Oh, and Usagi (Serena, AKA Sailor Moon) is a normal looking Japanese girl before she transforms & gets the trademark long blonde hair with pigtails.

Oops, goofed up on the Cutey Honey live-action thing it's actually Kekko Kamen
based off an anime by Go Nagai. He also did these shows: Getter Robo (Starvengers), Devilman, Mazinger Z (Tranzor Z), Cutey Honey, & Devil Lady.
His style is pretty weird.

My personal recommendation for ANYBODY who wants to check out Anime for the first time is Read Or Die OVA (Original Video Animation, also could be OAV original animation video). It is also called R.O.D. Here is a quick synopsis (plot).

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/read_or_die.jpg

Yomiko Readman is an agent called "The Paper" who works for the British Library (who is really a secret agent base). She has a mysterious power, called "paper mastery", she can use paper in any form. She can make a huge paper airplane out of loose leaf paper, stop bullets with an index card, and even make a parachute (reluctantly) out of a rare book. She is also a Bibliophile, which means she literally loves books. She spends all her money on books, & her entire apartment building is filled with books. She is joined by Nancy Matahari (AKA Miss Deep) who can pass through solid objects. Their boss is Mr. Joker (which is NOT the Batman villain), who is under the orders of Mr. Gentleman. Mr. Gentleman is the secret leader of Britain, and is thought to be immortal, and knows everything.

I Highly recommend this show. Here is a link for some pics/more info about the show (and a couple of others).
http://karmaburn.com/read_or_die.php

There is a follow up TV series called R.O.D The TV. About a group of 3 paper masters called the 3 sisters Detective Agency. The show is 26 episodes long, and is called Read or Dream (I still call it Read or Die).

Hey Tim, ever see Trigun? If so maybe you can tell us about it?
Or anybody else? How about Macross, Tenchi Muyo!, Inuyasha, etc.

If it's not too offensive (notice I did not show pics of the girls in the show Godannar, cause they could be offensive).

Timothy2035

I never saw Trigun, at least I can't recall, though its foggy, but I might have seen it.

Hey here is a news site here: GATV (http://www.gatv.tv/)

Maybe we can follow them to see some latest happenings. :D

EricDent
07-08-2006, 01:43 AM
That site is really behind!

Trigun is set on a desert planet. The main character is Vash the Stampede, a slightly goofy, and sometimes serious person. The planet's population is desended from several crashed spaceships, called seeds. They have a power plant aboard them, which the population is dependent on. Vash did something really bad, and has a $$600 Million bounty on his head. He has an evil brother named Knives. Knives sends a group of powerful people called "The Gung Ho Guns" to kill Vash. Vash is helped by a priest (who is also an ace gunman) named Wolfwood, and 2 girls who work for an insurance company, Millie & Meryll. Here is a pic of Vash (who is voiced in the USA dub by Johnny Yong Bosch).

Does that sound familar Tim? If not how about your favorite Robotech Era Macross or Southern Cross?

Timothy2035
07-08-2006, 01:56 AM
No, this doesn't ring a bell with me.

Though my favorite of the Robotech's well, I loved Macross for the drama, Southern Cross for the energy and determination and New Generation for the mecha. :p

Though I guess my most pivotal characters are:

Claudia Grant
Lisa Hayes
Dana Sterling
Bowie Grant
Marie Crystal
Scott Bernard
Rand

I guess if I had to toss the coin, Macross wins. It was so much drama and struggle. Especially when the SDF-1 had to leave Earth, rather they were forced to leave and they couldn't deport their citizens on board in the New Ontario quadrant. :(

Captain Gloval had to give the news and Minmei helped him out as he broke down with disappointment. Lisa running to the control room to get the ship to take off. Really touching. Those were my teen days.

Then too, seeing the SDF-1 rise for the last time in episode #36 (I believe) and fire its reflex gun one last time to try and stop Kyrhon. With Azonea at his side, he rams the SDF-1 and he and Azonea while holding hands turn to dust from the power of the explosion. I jumped up at home and shouted "NOOOO not the SDF-1. OH NO!!!" Gosh I must have been the attention of the house as people wondered had something happened to me. :p I wondered how could there ever be a continuance of Robotech with a disaster like that. I think that was the first memorable anime to me, as it was the first to show death. I never saw death in any cartoon or other anime show until then.

That set me on a journey to find out more about what anime was.

I like Gundam Seed the first incarnate show. That had a lot of the drama and impact Robotech was known for. I also thought the ending song was a real kicker.

Never really liked Gundam Seed, it ripped off the story of the original series for the first half of its run, which made me angry. None of the "Alternate Universe" Gundam series before it had to directly steal story elements, it was all design choices that linked it to the original series.

I suppose it's hard to explain ... Gundam Seed is one of the newer Gundam shows that is set in a different timeline than the original story. It uses the basic idea of the older shows to create a new story. But Seed actually used about a half of the actual story elements from the original Gundam instead of its writers doing their own work. I recommend you look for the older series -- especially the first one, titled simply "Mobile Suit Gundam" and see what I mean.

That said, I don't think any less of you for liking Seed. It's your choice. I'm just really into Gundam and the whole issue about it kinda cheeses me off.

Timothy2035
07-08-2006, 03:02 AM
Well Swordoath, it seems you have a good understanding of Gundam. I never knew that. I didn't get into the earlier Gundams. I do have a VHS of a Gundam show. I just scanned this. :p

http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/1673/gundam1tb.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The thing I liked about it is the intense combat. What I didn't like was that one lone mech survives against a gauntlet of other Gundams. Odd. LOL!!!

swordoath
07-08-2006, 03:13 AM
Yeah, that's Gundam Wing for you. The Gundams (the suits with white heads and gold crests) are super powerful compared to other Mobile Suits in that series. It's another Alternate Universe Gundam title.

Unlike Universal Century where battles are much more realistic, and winning is never guaranteed.

That's a hard one. My favorite Gundam series is Gundam 0083, but my favorite Gundam movie is Char's Counterattack. I like the DVD release of Char's Counterattack because it has some nice bonus features, like a model-building music video, plus the booklet included with it is nice and thick and has a lot of information.

But I like all parts of my collection for different reasons. And soon I'll have more to add -- Bandai will be releasing more Gundam soon, this time the Zeta movie trilogy!

I mentioned that Tim might like Gundam. Since he likes Robotech so much. I watched some of that stuff when they showed it on Cartoon Network's Toonami (when it was on weekday evenings). It was really interesting. I think the one I liked the most was MS Gundam, which is the first one.

Trigun is really good, sort of a mix of comedy, action, & drama set in sort of a "Wild West" atmosphere. You should check it out Tim.

Hey Gvamp or KG Kaiju is there an Anime you guys like?

Timothy2035

KG Kaiju is at the G-Fest. He will be back probably Sunday or Monday.

On second thought, after pondering that Trigun pic you posted, I did see the 1st couple of episodes, but thought it was just a similarity to Cowboy Beebop. I didn't follow it at length.

I don't know if gvamp is into anime. Maybe if he sees the topic up towards the top, he will read and post.

I can't wait till my Orguss 2 gets here. :)

EricDent
07-08-2006, 03:56 PM
Well I suppose I could see a similarity in those 2 shows. The only exception is the fact that Spike Spiegel is a Bounty Hunter, along with Jet Black, and later is joined by Faye Valentine, & Radical Edward (along with Ein the Dog). Vash has a bounty on his head, and unlike Spike, does not like to fight. In fact during the whole series Vash only accidentally kills people.

Like what was your favorite team? I think looking back over all the renditions, and even powers, I guess my favorite was the Zeo Rangers. Those suits were so cool. Which I think anime voice favorite Johnny Young Bosch was a part of the Zeo era. :p

Though to say who was my favorite overall Power Ranger, that's tough.

Cause they fight the Monster of the Week (they allways get HUGE somehow), and there are lots of giant mecha of some sort.

As for my favorite Power Ranger Team, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers!
With Billy, Zack, Jason, Kimberly  , Trini (RIP), & Tommy. They were the first ones I saw, and probably the coolest.

Timothy2035
07-11-2006, 11:28 PM
I don't know about the Power Rangers specific thread. I am not sure how many people would post in it. We'll see. I am sure its worth a try. :p

Oh did you know that Trini (who was Thuy Trang) died a few years ago in a car accident in California. I think it was an auto accident and the other person who drove the other vehicle was Dustin Nygen's (I know I misspelled the last name) wife who was expecting a baby at the time. I had read that recently at a Power Rangers' devotee fan site. :(

EDIT: I was thinking that perhaps the thread may get some pretty good feedback, but we would have to weed out the inappropriate responses. If you do the Official Power Rangers Discussion thread Eric, set some ground rules. I will support you on it. Also throw in a rule about screen pic sizes need to be only thumbnail (which if clicked will redirect to the site hosting it) or about the dimensions of 320 x 240 (like you would see in an Image Shack reduction option). We wouldn't want a lot of pictures posted of favorite Power Rangers that clog up the thread with HUGE images. That hurts dial-up users in loading screens.

EricDent

Well obviously I put up the new Super Sentai topic. Hopefully it gets some feedback. Also just to let you know, the Japanese actress who played Bandora (AKA Rita Repulsa) died recently.

Any how, I got the last DVD of UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie season 1. It was pretty good. I am considering possibly borrowing a couple of DVDs from a co-worker who likes anime as well. If I like them, I might purchase a few.

Here is another anime that even non-anime fans might like.

Record of Lodoss War
Set on a medieval world, it tells the story of a war between good & evil. It features all sorts of Dungeons & Dragons like characters. A heroic human fighter, a somewhat studious wizard/cleric, a cute elf girl warrior, a sneaky thief, and a gruff old dwarf. They fight several monsters such as kobolds, dragons, and undead.

Outlaw Star is about a group of bounty hunters, who can never catch a break. The main character is Gene Starwind, he finds a mysterious "girl" inside a really big suitcase. She is the key to finding a treasure called The Galactic Layline. Other people want that as well, so they try to stop them. Their enemies include the MacDougall brothers, The Kei Pirate, and the Anten Seven (led by Lord Hazanko). The crew includes Gene, Jim Hawking (a kid computer genius), Melfina (the girl I mentioned who also is the ships navigator, and literly is part of the ship when they fly), Aisha Clanclan a shapechanging cat-girl (don't get her mad), "Twilight" Suzuka a female assassin who was out to kill Gene, and "Hot Ice" Hilda who helped them find the XGP15A-II which they rename The Outlaw Star (She dies early in the show). They participate in a galaxy race during the show. The show is pretty good, but does have sort of a lame "ending". There is a sort-of spin off show caled Angel Links, which is set in the same universe as Outlaw Star. The show is 26 episode series, on 3 DVDs in that collection set (the old version had 4 discs and was about $80).

Here is a pic of the crew of the Outlaw Star

(Aisha, Jim, Gene, Melfina, Suzuka)

Yep, i have seen Fist of the North Star, I kind of liked that movie (it's out of print, and no new DVD yet), there were 2 TV series Fist of the North Star & New Fist of the North star. I can definately say that the show is NOT for kids, cause of all the blood. Same with the film.

The old Guyver OAV series was fun, though it's an older title now and might be hard to find, especially since Manga Entertainment is pretty much defunct now. I can't wait for the new series to be brought over, it looks awesome. :D

http://planetjesterz.com/guyver/gallery/sho54.jpg (http://www.bluecase.com/ScamSiren/bcap0502/check_bad.asp?DOM=planetjesterz.com&URL=http://planetjesterz.com/guyver/gallery/sho54.jpg)

Kaiju fans will probably like it. The monsters aren't giant like in Godzilla, but there are a lot of them and they're really interesting and weird looking.

Case in point, here's a few of the monsters.

http://planetjesterz.com/guyver/gallery/ht1.jpg (http://www.bluecase.com/ScamSiren/bcap0502/check_bad.asp?DOM=planetjesterz.com&URL=http://planetjesterz.com/guyver/gallery/ht1.jpg)

The storyline has to do with Sho ***amachi and his discovery one of the Guyver Armor units. He activates it accidentally and it bonds to him. Suddenly he's in the middle of a global power struggle headed by the corrupt Chronos Corporation. Chronos is kinda like a shady Mafia-type outfit except they also make weird monsters called Zoanoids out of regular humans. Chronos is after the Guyver units because the Guyver Armor is the strongest weapon on the planet. Anyway, there are a lot of monster fights and the Guyver armor looks really cool, and it's worth watching. The new series will be over here soon and you'll proably be able to find it really easily, but in the meantime there's the old series to dig up if you're interested.

The Guyver is pretty cool. I did not even know they were doing another series!
Hope it continues the one that never really had an ending. The Guyver T.V. series is really easy to find, 2 discs for about $25. As for Guyver Out Of Control (that OVA movie you mention) I had it on VHS in the past, it is A LOT different than the TV show!

The series was an OVA in Japan. Never saw it on TV but the thing was only two blocks of six episodes so it doesn't really conform well to TV viewing. I never saw the movie unfortunately. The new series is different again but looks interesting.

Official Japanese site for the new series. I can't read any of it but since I'm pretty good with the story I don't really need to. Going through the Character section makes me smile, especially the Zoanoid part.

It definately looks like a follow up to the other Guyver show that is out in the USA on DVD from Manga Video. BTW they are still around, cause the New Un-cut & subtitled version of the Street Fighter II The Animated Movie is coming out soon.

Here is a site about Guyver Out of Control: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guyver#Guyver:_Out_of_Control
(Yeah I know wiki is kind of off sometimes, but this one looks ok).

BTW the Live-Action Guyver film featuring Mark Hammil is on Sci-Fi at 11 PM (check your listings)
There are 2 Live-Action films, they aren't very good, but are kind of funny to watch.

Here is an anime some people might be familiar with...

Tenchi Muyo! (Which means No Need For Tenchi) Tenchi means Heaven and Earth so it could be No Need For Heaven And Earth.

There are several different series,

Tenchi Muyo OVA 1 & 2: On the $100 DVD set from Pioneer, which includes an interactive Tenchi Encyclopedia. Tells the story of Tenchi Masaki, an average high schooler, who's life is totally changed when he investigates a mysterious cave that is rummoured to contain a demon.

Tenchi Universe: An alternate storyline that tells a longer version of the Tenchi story. This time a spaceship crashes near his house, and he goes to investigate, only to discover things are about to change forever.

Tenchi in Tokyo: Another alternate storyline that tells a slighty different version of the Tenchi story. This time Tenchi goes to Tokyo to study, while the other girls stay in the country. Tenchi meets another girl, and starts to really like her, but she might not be what she seems. Features Sayuka Kumishiro    .

Tenchi Muyo! GXP: A side story featuring one of Tenchi's neighbors who is accidentally recruited into the Galaxy Police and has madcap adventures. If you thought the ladies from Tenchi Muyo! were nice to look at, you should see these girls    . Later in the show the Tenchi characters show up.

Magical Project S: A takeoff of Sailor Moon featuring Sasami (Ayaka's little sister) being a Magical Girl, it is only availible subtitled on DVD. Tells the story of Sasami, who is chosen by the soon to be queen of a magical kingdom, Tsunami to restore ballance to the earth. Trying to stop her is Pixy Misa an evil magical girl, who is sent by Ranmia, who also was in line for the queen-ship, but did not get chosen.

Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure: Not really a Tenchi show, but does have ties to the story. Is set in an alternate universe with giant mecha. Very similar to the Tenchi series, cause the main character suddenly is forced to live with a bunch of females, who all vie for his attention.

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki: The latest chapter in the Tenchi story, only vol. 1 is currently availible on DVD, but vols. 2-3 are coming in Sept. & Nov. Tenchi finds out that he is not an only child, and he gets a fiancee.

There are also 3 movies & 1 special.

Tenchi Muyo! In Love: Tenchi goes back in time to prevent something happening to his mother, if he does not, he won't exsist. So he gets help from the girls to stop an evil alien named Kain.

Tenchi Muyo! In Love 2: Tenchi mysteriously disapears, the girls look for him, when they find him, he looks older and is married. It is soon revealed that his "bride" might not be real.

Tenchi Muyo! Daughter of Darkness: Tenchi suddenly gets a very attractive "daughter" only to discover she might not be what she seems.
A long time rival of Tenchi's grandfather is behind the shenanagins.

The Mihoshi Space Adventure/Pretty Sammy special: The 1st show is a story which sets up Tenchi Universe by introducing Mihoshi's reluctant partner Kiyone. The 2nd part of the disc is 3 episodes of Pretty Sammy, which is another spoof of Sailor Moon with Sasami as Pretty Sammy.

BTW just to let you know, the only shows that are part of the "Real" Tenchi story, according to the creator of the show. Are: Tenchi Muyo! OVA 1 & 2, GXP, Dual, and Ryo-Ohki.

I will post pics of the girls if you want...Only the appropriate kind of course.

Welcome Mr. Bowler!
Alot of those shows are now on DVD. A few of them are reasonabley priced, such as Gundam Wing. Also some of the shows you mention are still on TV. Dragon Ball Z & GT are all out on DVD now, but obviously there are an insane # of DVDs for those shows. Yu-Yu is out on DVD as well, I don't think there are more than 15 DVDs of that show. Yu-Gi-Oh season 1 is on DVD now, and I guess GX is supposed to come back on Cartoon Network soon.

I mostly stick to shorter shows that are 13-26 episodes long. The only exceptions are SDF Macross (36 episodes) and Gatchaman (108 episodes).

Anyways just to add to Tim's list:

Well Eric is a common name. It means Honorable Ruler.

So my name would be Eric (Honorable Ruler) Ronald (Advisor To The King) Dent (Denton means: From the valley farm).

So lets see, I am a Chancellor who used to live on a farm. Which is weird cause my dad's parents worked on a farm in Superior Montana (which is in a valley).

Anyways, looking up stuff like that is really interesting.

Just picked up the first 2 volumes of a new series called Gun Sword. I have heard good things about this show. It looks like a cross between Trigun, and a Giant Mecha show. The main character is named Van. Like Vash the Stampede he does not like to fight, but this is not because he hates hurting people, it's cause he is super lazy. He also loves condiments on everything he eats.

I will let you know if it's good.

Watched the first volume of Gun Sword last night. It was good!

Basically the story is Van (pronounced like Vaughn) helps an orphan girl named Wendy Garret. Wendy is looking for her lost brother, Van is looking for the man who killed his fiancée, this man might have taken Wendy's brother as well. The man has a distinguishing mark, a claw for his right hand.

Van has a gun that becomes a sword, it is sort of like the weapon that Ivy in Soul Calibur has. It also helps him summon his Mecha (called armors in this show) Dann (which looks kind of similar to the Evengellion mecha). He summons it from an orbiting space station, by turning his hat sideways, and making a "V" slash with his gun-sword.

Like I said before Van LOVES condiments, and absolutely DROWNS any food he eats with ALL the condiments in the restaurants/inns they go to.

Here is a few pics of the characters.

Watched the 2nd Volume, it was even cooler than the first. They get an sort-of nemesis/rival named Ray, who also pilots an Armor (it seems like everybody they meet has one). Also they gain a new member of their traveling party, Ray's younger brother (who you can tell really likes Wendy) Joshua.

Feel free to add some of your favorites.

Super Deformed Gundam: (Various movies) from 1989-2003
Mobile Fighter G Gundam: 49 episodes, 1994-1995
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: 49 episodes, 1995-1996
After War Gundam X: 39 episodes, 1996
New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz: OVA, 3 episodes, 1997, Movie, 1998
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: 50 episodes, 2002-2003
Superior Defender Gundam Force: 52 episodes, did not finish it's run
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny: 52 episodes, 2004-2005
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED C.E. 73: Stargazer (online only): 3 episodes, 2006

So lets see thats (at least): 574 episodes (not including the movies), at let's say 25 minutes each=14350 minutes=at least 240 HOURS of Gundam!

That is not even the longest running show....That honor goes to "Meet The Press" which has been on since 1947!

Hate to be a nitpicker there Eric, but Turn A should be listed with the Alternate Universe titles. There's this big deal about how it's supposed to link all of Gundam (the Universal Century and the Alternate Universes)together, but it was never actually anything solid so the fanbase is what really did anything to enhance that aspect. Technically Super Deformed/Superior Defender could be a seperate entry as they really don't stitch with anything else in Gundam continuity. You also never mentioned the Gundam EVOLVE series, G-Saviour or Gaia Gear, and there are also manga, radio dramas, novels, photobooks, games and serialized stories that add to the Gundam mythos.

Plus the merchandising! The likeness of Gundam has been on everything from model kits to clothing to lunchboxes to cars. Pretty much everything you can think of has a Gundam equivalent -- even to the extent of foods, drinks and candies.

The internet helps alot. I personally don't really like Gundam, I think the only ones I saw were part of MS Gundam, & Gundam Wing.

Any other suggestions for Anime to cover? Don't forget you could tell us about your favorite stuff, don't let me hog the spotlight the whole time...

If you do one make sure to include some pics (if possible), and if it's availible in the USA on DVD (most of the stuff I did is still availible, but might be hard to find certain Gundam shows).

Hey these forums are great. Good place to share info! and to show off the knowledge that may one day pay big on Jeopardy. Now I have to tell you guys about an anime I just got called scrapped princess. The stuff is solid gold! My Anime buddy lent me his copy and I must say one of the best animes I have seen.

Now for all of this talk of voltron macross and Gundam. None of that has ever really appealed to me. I suppose the closest thing would be the Transformers which I watched as a child. Everything on these gundam type shows is a little to inorganic for me. I like the fleshy stuff, not so much metal. The Record of Lodoss which someone recommended is great, and this scrapped princess is top notch. I suppose that is why I dig Godzilla as well. All the giant hunks of fleshy anger roaming around destroying infrastructure. Great! (that being said I oly really like Jet Jaguar for his comical value.)

later folks. you all keep me laughing.

MasterofNone, there should be a little icon of a mountain with a yellow sky and a box around it in the "full editor" (hit Reply instead of using the quick reply field). You will have to have the image up on another website to link to -- if you don't have your own webspace, I suggest Photobucket to host images, as they are free and it's quite easy to use.

http://www.photobucket.com

Follow the instructions to put up images in Photobucket, then come back here and use the Insert Image icon. When it asks for the URL, put in the address of the image you loaded onto PB -- it tells you what it is right under the image in your PB account.

As a side note, if you like giant fights but dislike robots, I recommend you look into Evangelion. At the start it looks like a standard robot show, but in reality they're not robots at all ... The show is quite interesting if a little heady.

I might have to check out Scrapped Princess. Looks interesting.

The question I have, is do we consider Transformers as an Anime? I say yes, cause it was an American show based on Japanese toys, then later it was made into actual Anime shows (Robots In Disguise, Armada, Cybertron, & Energon), there are even Japanese Transformers shows that never came over to the USA (Victory Force, Beast Wars 2, etc.)

So Masterofnone! you liked Transformers, did you like Macross? (Part of the Robotech series). If so you might get a kick out of that Godannar Anime I mentioned (on the first page) it has a very '70s feel to the show, much like Tranzor Z, and Starvengers.

Here is a pic of the main characters from Godannar.

BTW just did a slight update to this topic. Putting pictures in each one.
I also moved some of the Photobucket items, so the "quote" pics won't be there.

If you want you can edit your "quote" post and add a /Anime/(picture name).jpg to the picture link. If that does not work, then just delete the "quote" and redo it based on the new improved post.

BTW Tim & Swordoath, you might want to resize those Gundam images you guys put on page 2.

Monster Rancher was pretty good to me as an anime. Did you ever play the video game that was available for the PSOne?

EricDent
08-02-2006, 08:57 PM
Yeah, I played up to Monster Rancher 3. There is a Monster Rancher 4 in stores now for PS2. I had an awesome T-Rex monster called Godzilla in the first game.

Ever try a game called Magic Pengel? It is a monster raiseing game, where you draw the monster you want to have fight. Of course I made a Godzilla-looking monster. He was kinda blocky looking, but you could tell it was Godzilla. BTW you used the controller to draw, which made it a tad difficult.

Also have you guys ever played Mario Paint for the SNES? It was a painting game, where you could make stuff like music videos, and other stuff. It came with a mouse and I was pretty good at traceing pictures of Street Fighter II characters.

Any how, back on topic...Digimon is pretty cool, and it's even still on TV on Toon Disney. Yu-Gi-Oh is also still on the WB, which might change soon cause WB & UPN are combining into one channel.

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi you say Godzilla85? I have that on DVD, and own the Manga (which is even more risque if you catch my drift).

That is possibly the best spoof Anime ever made. They spoof every genre & famous movie you can think of. Star Wars, Star Blazers, Tranzor Z, Bruce Lee, Tekken, Noir films, etc.

Certain characters we obviously can't post pictures of (Mune Mune for example, cause she is the "Sexy Babe" of the show, and wears rather revealing outfits constantly).

Here are the main characters though.

Satoshi "Sasshi" Isamiya
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/art22.jpg

Arumi Asahina
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/art09.jpg

Here is a quick description as given on this site: http://www.abenobashidvd.com/

"Now that we’ve got that established, what exactly is this series about?
Well, Arumi Asahina says that "Bein’ human, havin’ your health... that’s the
most important thing." Try telling that to her twelve-year-old friend Sasshi
Imamiya. He’s lost his home, lost the toy collection that defined his very
geekdom, and he’s about to lose his best friend, Arumi. Reality is
closing in on him.
That is, until they discover that their neighborhood shopping district is
actually a portal to a series of parallel existences. Reality decides to take a vacation-an extended vacation-as Arumi and Sasshi suddenly find themselves in a world like their own… only not. And as they try to fight their way back to the real world, they’ll face menacing mushrooms, big-breasted space pirates, killer kung-fu fighters, a tripped-out transvestite, a sorcerer who seems to be in some sort of midlife crisis... and that’s just the beginning of this wacky series!"

I highly recomend this series if you are in the mood for a good laugh. Warning, there is quite a bit of nudity, and possibly mature themes involved, so keep the kiddies away!

Guess what is coming soon?

Robotech the Shadow Chronicles.

You ask what is this. Why, its the continuation of the 3rd generation of Robotech (known also as Mospeda). The search for Admiral Rick Hunter and the SDF-3 that never materialized from hyperspace in the last human resistance against the Invid invaders of Earth.

The climatic end to a passionate anime saga just got rejuvinated and a closure to try and answer the question, what happened to Hunter?

Here is my source (and Funimation is behind it, the same company under the corporate umbrella of Navarre, who has BCI under them as well who just released the Ultraman 1st collection).

July 25, 2006

The Anime News Network is reporting that FUNimation Productions, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Navarre Corporation, has acquired the rights to Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles, the "first true sequel" to the 1980s Robotech anime series. Robotech's North American license holder Harmony Gold revealed the project at Anime Expo back in 2004 as a potential TV series, Robotech: Shadow Force (see "4th Robotech Anime Series in Production"). Now that long awaited sequel arrives in the form of an 88-minute movie, which FUNimation hopes to place in theaters and on TV.

FUNimation's acquisition of the new Robotech feature is another example of that company's aggressive pursuit of popular anime licenses. ADV currently has the rights to the classic Robotech series (as well as the related Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeada properties that Carl Macek combined to create the original 85-episode Robotech series) and could also benefit from a revival of interest in the property.

Developed by Tatsunoko Productions (Speed Racer, Battle of the Planets) the new Robotech movie should be a major boost for the hybrid mecha-happy property that was a key component in the development of the modern anime market (and fan base) in the U.S. In spite of legal disputes in Japan that have kept some related movies such as the 1984 feature, Macross: Do You Remember Me from ever being released officially in the U.S., Robotech has been a licensing powerhouse with a wide range of spin-off properties including a role-playing games, video games, CCGs (see "Robotech Collectible Card Game"), comics (Wildstorm's being the most recent), novels, and toys including Toynami's superb Robotech Masterpiece series of die-cast transforming toys (see "Robotech Masterpiece Collection").

I've heard about it before. Sounds cool!

BTW at Dragoncon (about 1994) I saw a fan-dub parody called Robotech III Not Necessarily The Sentinels. This was after they showed another one called Space Dipwads, which was Star Blazers re-dubbed. Both had me LOL & in tears from the laughter!

You got to fill me in more on that.

Guess what, the She-Ra Princess of Power that I have listed in post # 101 is in stores now. I saw it at a Super Wal-Mart for I think $18.88. I was tempted to put it in layaway, but had to discipline myself and say no (for now). I had only the money for food at the time. LOL!!! Though I will be back. I liked the show, even though it was on a "girl's premise". There were a few episodes where He-Man did a cross over to the show and vice versa. Plus its the "Best Episodes" so I am sure it will be the better action show airings of the series.

I think really I like the show due to the fact, I like horses, so seing that her horse aided her in the fight, that made the interest in the show perk up for me. Like in He-Man, I really liked Battlecat and went wild to see Adam transform his pet tiger into a raging beast. LOL!!!!

Do I need therapy? :p

Well I did not see the whole thing of that Robotech spoof. Cause it was like almost 1 AM, and I needed to go home. I took the train (MARTA) there so I needed to catch the last train home, or I would have had to stay in some strangers room at the hotel. As for Space Dipwads I saw about half of it cause I went to the costume contest. What I saw was pretty darn funny though.

Space Dipwads was just a Star Blazers episode that was re-dubbed live, with silly sound effects & voices. I was laughing so much cause the effects were so darn ridiculous!

Robotech Spoof I saw like the first 10 minutes, it looked like maybe some edited scenes from the show (which are now back on the DVDs) re-dubbed. The bit I recall is Rick & Minmay were in a barracks type building. Minmay was questioning Rick on why he wanted to see her. Her thought was that he just wanted to finally "do her" (she said something else that was naughtier).

Sorry it's so vague but it was about 15 years ago.

Anyhow, any other anime shows out there that interest you guys/gals?

EricDent

Here are 2 totally unrelated anime movies. Even though they have a similar name.

SDF Macross II The Movie is a fictional story set in the Macross Universe.

Macross Plus is a story set 30 years after the Great War between Humans & Zentradi.

Both involve idol singers.

Macross II (1992)
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/macrossII.jpg

Macross II is the story of Hibiki Kanzaki a reporter for Scramble News Network.
He becomes involved in a new battle between the Earth & a new Zentradi-controlling race called the Marduk. They control the Zentradi with females known as Emulators. The Emulators control the Zentradi by using a song. Which is why the Macross defense, called the Minmay defense does not work.
Hibiki stumbles across Ishtar, a Marduk Emulator, who is encountering Earth culture for the first time. Like the Zentradi before them, the Marduk eventually choose not to fight, and over throw their Emperor Ingues. Who forces the Zentradi & Marduk to sacrifice themselves by using the "Song of Death". Lord Feff, who is secretly in love with Ishtar (who is his superior, and thus is considered a "forbidden" love), helps with the revolt. It also features the SDF-1 in a very stirring role.

Macross Plus (1994)
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/macross2.jpg

Macross Plus is the story of 2 test pilots on Planet Eden. They are Isamu Alva Dyson & Guld Goa Bowman. They both had a female friend/lover named Myung Fang Lone who was a singer, but is now the manager for the virtual idol singer, Sharon Apple. They are testing out 2 new planes to become the next Veritech fighter. Unbeknownst to the 2 friends/enemies the UN Spacey has secretly designed an un-maned fighter. Then all heck breaks loose, cause Sharon Apple gets her new AI chip, and since Sharon used some of Myung's memories (Myung controlled Sharon until the AI was perfected), Sharon wants Isamu, and if she can't have Isamu, no one can. She takes over both the new UN Spacey AI fighter, and the SDF-1.

If you have not seen Macross Plus, I highly recommend it. It has gorgeous visuals, great story lines, and awe inspiring music done by Yoko Kanno.

As for Macross II, it is also rather well done, but not quite as polished as Macross Plus. It does feature some very Minmay-esqe songs by a singer called Wendy Ryder.

BTW there are 2 versions of Macross Plus available. One is a Movie called Macross Plus The Movie, which is how the director intended it should be seen. Also there is a 2 DVD set of 4 episodes which expands on the story, and IMO makes a little more sense, cause the movie version is a little hard to follow.

I'm feeling lazy,so here's a description of Rurouni Kenshin from Wikipedia....

Himura KenshinThe prototype series first appeared as a pair of separate short stories (both are titled Rurouni: Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story) published in 1992 and 1993 in the manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump Special. In 1994, Watsuki created a final ongoing version that was published in Shonen Jump until its conclusion in 1999, which the various anime series are based from. In 2000, it was followed up by Yahiko no Sakabatō ("Yahiko's Reversed-Edge Sword"). The manga consists of 28 tankōbon volumes (Yahiko no Sakabatō was never compiled). The storyline of Kenshin is divided into three storyline arcs: Tokyo, Kyoto, and the Jinchū (a made-up word, which could be translated as the revenge of the man) arc. The Jinchū arc was not animated, save for the parts about Kenshin's background which formed one of the OVAs released (see below)

There are four animated Rurouni Kenshin series. るろうに剣心 "Rurouni" is a neologism created from the verb "ru," meaning "to wander," and "ronin," meaning "masterless samurai." A rough translation of the title would be "Kenshin the Wandering Swordsman". This became the English title of the first story arc.

The TV series was set during the early Meiji period. In the United States, Rurouni Kenshin was the second most popular cable TV show for ages 13-17, after Lizzie McGuire in 2003. The TV series was split into three approximate seasons, with the first 27 episodes generally following the Tokyo Arc, episodes 28-62 closely following the Kyoto Arc, and episodes 63-95 being "filler" non-manga based episodes designed to allow for the manga to get ahead a little. The anime series slid from high popularity after the Kyoto Arc to eventual cancellation before the Jinchū/Revenge Arc could be animated.
Note: There were also two "specials" that aired and were once considered a part of the TV series (making the total number of episodes to 97). However, when the show was dubbed and brought over to the states, those episodes were "left out" and have become somewhat of a legend/considered to be "lost" by some fans.
A movie (Rurouni Kenshin: Ishin Shishi no Requiem/Rurouni Kenshin: Requiem for the Ishin Patriots, called Samurai X: The Motion Picture in the English language release), which tells a story where Kenshin meets a samurai who is trying to start a revolution to overthrow the Meiji government.
The first OVA series (Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen/Rurouni Kenshin: Recollection, split apart as Samurai X: Trust and Samurai X: Betrayal in the English language releases), set during the downfall of the Tokugawa shogunate and telling of Kenshin's childhood and young adult life. Only a few characters from the TV series appear in this OVA, namely Kenshin, Kenshin's master, Hiko Seijūrō (Seijuro Hiko in the English anime), and Saitō Hajime (Hajime Saito in the English anime), as well as a cameo by Makoto Shishio in sillouette at the end.
The second OVA series (Rurouni Kenshin: Seisōhen/Rurouni Kenshin: Time, called Samurai X: Reflection in the English language releases), set after the TV series and telling of Kenshin and Kaoru's later years, differs from the manga on many key plot points.
The OVA series -- which feature a number of historical characters -- attempts to be more realistic and accurate than the TV series, which begins as a romantic comedy but evolves into a period drama. The OVA made use of live footage spliced with animation cells giving the series a different feel than straight animation.

There is a good deal of debate regarding the authenticity of the second OVA. Most avid fans tend to completely ignore this OVA and disagree with the ending that was given in it. Creator Nobuhiro Watsuki also concurs with his fans and states that he enjoys happy endings best.

Both OVAs were re-released in "Director's Cut" forms that spliced the separate "episodes" together into continuous movies, as well as adding some extra footage. The order of musical cues in both director's cut OVAs were significantly altered, although the tracks themselves were not altered or omitted.

The animated series enjoys immense popularity worldwide, and although designed primarily for male fans, its detailed exploration of emotion and relationships (especially the romantic relationship that develops between Kenshin and Kaoru) attracts many female followers. Since the series ran for so long (95 episodes), each of the main characters was explored quite in depth. Together with the OVAs explaining Kenshin's past and future, this series is considered by many one of the most complete shows about the period and of the 'samurai' genre. The series is currently distributed by Sony Pictures Television International.

Samurai X was used for the Sony dub of the TV series, which aired in Europe, the Philippines and India. This version was also shown in some other countries. The Sony dub, while generally well-received by casual viewers in these countries, has been criticized by fans for its localization of the series (There is no variation on "de gozaru"; Kenshin is not unusually polite; there is plenty of slang), and for changing the names of some characters Kaoru was changed to "Corrie", Yahiko to "Yoshi", Saito to "Sato" (the "i" is missing) and Kenshin to "Kenshi" (the "n" in shin is missing). The pronunciation of Sanosuke's name also varies, sometimes Sanosuke and Sanosuki.

Thanks for the info Godzilla85! It would be ultra cool if you could post some pictures. I have heard of Rurouni Kenshin before, but never really got into it. Mainly cause I try to stick with shorter length series. Preferably 13-26 episodes long. The only exceptions that I own of series longer than that are SDF Macross (36 episodes), and Gatchaman (105 episodes).

Ever see one called Samurai Deeper Kyo? It looked pretty good from the 1 episode I got free on a DVD in an Anime magazine.

There are quite a few noteable Samurai-type animes.

Samurai 7 (Giant Mecha & Samurai)
Ninja Scroll (has Samurai in it)
Ninja Resurrection (has Samurai in it)
Ninja Scroll The Series (has Samurai in it)
Samurai Champloo
Jubei-Chan The Legend Of The Lovely Eyepatch

Thanks GRK.

I just got a new DVD of a new anime show called Negima! Magister Negi Magi.

Take 1 part Harry Potter, 1 part Harem anime, put them together in a cauldron of Magic potion, and you get this show. Vol. 1 is out now, it has 6 episodes for $20. It is distributed by Funimation.

Here is the basic plot:

Negi Springfield, a 9 3/4 year old (says he is 10) becomes an English teacher at an academy for girls. He teaches a class of Junior High girls (who are all at least 15). They think he is cute. Unbeknownst to the girls, he is secretly a wizard-in-training. This teaching job is part of his training. In order to become a Magister, he has to find a partner. The partner is someone who protects him from harm when he casts spells.

So a mix of magic & mayhem abound in this show.

Here is a pic of Negi's class (Negi is in the Green Suit).

Slight update, changed the name of the Gun X Sword show to it's real name, Gun Sword (The X is just a design inbetween the words Gun & Sword).

Any requests, or other anime you want to know about (not hentai) please feel free to ask.

In honor of the Jetman Sentai show. I am now going to do Gatchaman. This show helped inspire Super Sentai. Because it features a 5 person team with color coded costumes fighting evil forces, which had the technology to create giant mecha that often resemble animals. This show started in Japan in 1972. Which if your keeping score is 3 years before Goranger (the first Super Sentai) came on.

Here is a pic of the team
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/gatchaman.jpg

Whte=Ken The Eagle (Ken Washio), The leader of Gatchaman. In fact he is called Gatchaman.
Green=Ryu The Owl (Ryu Nakanishi), The pilot of the God Pheonix (the team's vehicle), he does not see that much action, but he can hold his own.
Black=Joe The Condor (Joe Asakura), 2nd in command, fires the Bird Missile that destroys most of the mecha they fight, has a major grudge with the enemy Galactor.
Yellow=Jinpei The Swallow, the smallest on the team, but not the weakest, gets into trouble quite often.
Pink=Jun The Swan, the navigator of the God Pheonix, also acts as Jinpei's sister.
All the team members, with the exceptions of Ken & Ryu are orphans.

Each team member had a vehicle.
Ken had a jet, Ryu had the body of the God Pheonix, Joe had a race car, Jinpei had a weird robo-buggy, and Jun had a motorcycle. ALL 5 vehicles had to come together to form the God Pheonix, or it could not fire the Bird Missile. The God Pheonix also could go into "Firebird mode" but this causes a lot of strain on the team members.

Here are the vehicle pics:
G-1 (Ken): http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/firstg1.gif

G-2 (Joe): http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/firstg2.gif

G-3 (Jun): http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/firstg3.gif

G-4 (Jinpei): http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/firstg4.gif

G-5 (Ryu) (Note this is the completed God Pheonix): http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/firstg5.gif

Each team member also had a signature weapon.
Ken had the Bird boomerang he said "Bird Run" whenever he threw it, Ryu had a grappling gun, Joe had 2 weapons a grappling hook gun & feather shurikens, Jinpei had a bolo, and Jun had a explosive Yo-Yo.

The enemy is called Galactor, they are a secret orginzation trying to take over the world (why does that sound familiar? I know COBRA!!!). They are secretly led by Leader X, who runs the show. The man? getting the orders from Leader X is Berg Katse.

Here is a pic of him/her. I say her cause Berg has a really good talent at disguises, and he/she dresses up as a woman several times, and it's hard to notice the difference. Plus he/she might BE a woman, cause he/she wears a mask at all times, so therefore it's imposible to tell.

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/Katse.gif

Here is the intro: 9jfSMRmoOyY

If this show looks familiar, it's cause it came out in the USA 3 times!

One was called Battle of the Planets, which took away most of the violence/bloodshed (there is a lot of it in the Japanese version) and added 7 Zark 7 a cute robot. They also changed the names of the characters:
Ken=Mark, Ryu=Tiny, Joe=Jason, Jinpei=Keyop (the Voice Actor made him talk like a bird in this version), & Jun=Princess.

Here is that intro: rQRMkdE_jog

The 2nd was called G-Force, they did not tone down the violence that much in this version, but since the USA distributor disliked "quiet" in animated features, they put in the most annoying synthisizer music EVER. It also changed the names: Ken=Ace Goodheart, Ryu=Hoot Owl, Joe=Dirk Daring, Jinpei=PeeWee & Jun=Agatha June

That intro
pPBETiZNduQ

It was also called Eagle Riders, which took the 2 sequels to Gatchaman (Gatchaman 2, and Gatchaman Fighter) and changed the names yet again.
Ken=Hunter Haris, Ryu=Ollie Keeawani, Joe=Joe Thax, Jinpei=Mickey Dugan, & Jun=Kelly Jennar.

I can't seem to locate a video of that opening.

There also was a '90s re-do of Gatchaman, called Gatchaman '90s. It is an OVA of 3 45 minute episodes which tells the whole Gatchaman story.
They changed the names for the dub of the show.
Ken The Eagle, Rocky The Owl, Joe The Condor, Jimmy The Swallow, and Jun The Swan.

Here is a pic from that show:
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/gatchaman2.jpg

I was mentioning earlier that they fight mecha that look like animals, well here are 4 of the over 100 mecha they fight.

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/mecha101_1.jpghttp://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/mecha98_1.jpghttp://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/mecha75_1.jpghttp://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/mecha20_1.jpg

BTW the series is about 105 episodes long. Which is at least 18 DVDs. It is availible from ADV films.

The other way to get it is to get the Battle of the Planets version, which has 36 episodes on 6 discs. It also has 1 episode of G-Force on each of the 6 discs, along with the 36 corresponding episodes of Gatchaman.

Feel free to discuss...

Speaking of Gatchaman from Eric's post #127, at Robotech dot com, they give the ability to get a free download of an episode, which is playable in an Apple iPod or on your computer in Apple iTunes. I have it on my computer and the episode is quite entertaining. :) I believe Eric might have mentioned it before here in the forum, but since we are now shifting to Gatchaman, I thought I would add where to get a free episode.

Here is a link to the page at Robotech dot com (though many may not know, but I love Robotech slightly more than ....Mothra. :p ) SOURCE (http://www.robotech.com/news/viewarticle.php?id=263)

G-force had a run on Toonami back in the late '90s (before Adult swim took their spot at midnight.) It was on in the late '80s originally though. Plus they ran it constantly on TBS late night (about 3 am or so). Battle of the Planets was on Boomerang for maybe a month, they showed a marathon of it for like the entire weekend last year. It also was on in the late '70s-'80s originally.
Eagle Riders was on about 1998 or so on either Fox or WB. As for Gatchaman, it ended it's run in 1973-1974 or so.

This show is availible on DVD though, so go out & get it! You should still be able to find Volumes 1-14 with 6 episodes on each DVD for about $15 each, or if you like boxes & extras for $25 for 3 DVDs in a Alex Ross artbox the 3rd DVD is an extra DVD, sort of like the ones in the Robotech mini-box sets they had a few years ago. IE they have info, interviews, pictures, etc. dealing with one character. Vols. 15-16 are out NOW!

BTW a slight update to the very first post on this topic, about Voltron. I heard that Vol. 1 (I assume it's a box set) comes with 15! episodes! Talk about value!
It's about $25 for 3 discs. Also I saw something interesting on Amazon.com. A Silverhawks limited edition Collectors set!

In honor of the soon to be released Robotech The Shadow Chronicles.

Here is Super Dimensional Fortress Macross (AKA The Macross Saga of Robotech). Note: This is talking about the Japanese version, so many names will NOT be the US character names on Robotech.

Story: In 1999, a city-sized alien spacecraft crashes on Earth, and over the course of 10 years the humans rebuild the spacecraft just before a fleet of Zentradi warships arrive on the hunt for the ship belonging to their enemy, the Supervision Army. Meanwhile, a young pilot comes of age and struggles with a love triangle between a rising pop singer and a dedicated bridge officer. During the war that ensues, the human crew operating this untested alien ship find themselves alone in fending off the invaders. Due to inexperience operating the ship, they end up stranded on the edge of the solar system, with refugees from the city that grew around the restored space craft living within the ship. The malfunctioning "fold system", which usually allows rapid space travel, vanishes, causing the crew to take about a year to return to Earth using conventional engines.

Main Characters: (Human)
Hikaru Ichijyo a teenage amateur pilot who gets caught up in the war. AKA Rick Hunter in Robotech.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/Hikaru_ichijyo.jpg

Lynn Minmay a teenage girl who is possibly the one key to salvation from the Zentradi.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/minmay.jpg

Misa Hayase an officer in the UN Spacy, much to her fathers (Admiral Hayase)
dismay, she volunteers to the SDF-1. Is called Lisa Hayes in Robotech.

Roy Focker ace pilot, and older brother figure to Hikaru. Flies the Skull-1 Valkyrie.

Claudia LaSalle another officer on the SDF-1, has a relationship with Roy. Is friends with Misa. Is known as Claudia Grant in Robotech.

Hayao Kakizaki part of Hikaru's flight wing. Is known as Ben Dixon in Robotech.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/ben.jpg

Maximilian Jenius an astonishing pilot, who is also a key participant in the conflict with the Zentradi. Is known as Max Sterling in Robotech.

Bruno J. Global the captain of the SDF-1, loves to smoke his pipe.

Main Characters: (Zentradi)

Vrlitwhai Kridanik the commander of the Zentradi fleet sent to look for the SDF-1. AKA Breetai in Robotech.

Lap Lamiz is the commander of the Meltlandi (female Zentradi) forces. Known as Azonia in Robotech.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/Azonia.jpg

Milia Fallyna is the Meltlandi ace pilot who knows no equal. Named Miriya Parino in Robotech.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/Millia.jpg

Quamzin Kravshera (Kamujin) is the most aggressive Zentradi commander, and gets in lots of mishaps cause he is rather reckless. Known as Khyron in Robotech.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/Kyhron.jpg

This show basically launched the Anime genre into the USA. Before this there were a few Anime shows brought over, such as Gigantor (Tetsujin 28), Star Blazers (Space Battleship Yamato), among others. However they never really caught on as much as this show as part of the Robotech saga did. The Robotech saga was an alagamation of 3 seperate and unrelated shows, which Carl Macek asembled into the Robotech saga, mostly due to the TV networks needing a longer series to put on TV. There are 36 episodes in the SDF Macross series, 23 in the Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross (The Robotech Masters), and 25 in Genesis Climber Mospeada (The New Generation). They made 1 new show "Dana's Story" to tie Macross & Southern Cross together (even though they are not). This totalled the minimum 65 episode requirement to put on TV as a daily show.

Eric, you can now do 13 images per post, but this also takes into account any smileys.

And this is my little contribution to the Macross topic at hand now....(though mine is from the "Robotech" persuasion)

Here it is, the main center and focus of interest that spanned all the stories and offspins of Robotech, the one, the only Space Battle Fortress Macross ( SDF-1).

http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/2896/sdf1robotechfy8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I think this is the one ship in all anime history that stands out above all the rest. Going through countless animes and other toon shows, I don't think any other ship could be more recognized than the SDF-1. It was a sad day for me when episode #36 "To the Stars" aired. It was here that Captain (who had been promoted to Admiral) Gloval commanded his last mission aboard this ill fated ship. A ship that survived a brutal onslaught by alien Zentraedi invaders, which set up in a lake in a sense, near dead, and was triggered into action once again to protect Earth and its human inhabitants.

The brave crew of 1st Officer Lisa Hayes, 2nd Officer Claudia Grant, and other crewmen Sammy Porter, Lt. Kim Young, and Vanessa ( I believe last name Graves) all moved into classic military readiness and took the ship up to fire upon Kyrhon. Though Kyrhon's ship just got grazed by the blast from the reflex main cannon. The Zentreadi ship was set course to ram the SDF-1 and take it out once and for all. A energized response by the remaining fighters from launched squadrons did what they could to try and defend the now powerless space fortress, but to no avail. The weaponse weren't enough, even having destroid valkaryies deployed trying to aid the situation. Kyrhon rams the great ship and the last image of human life shows the bridge of Kyrhon's ship, and Kyrhon and his female Zentreadi Lead Azonea are shouting victory. But the explosion turns them to dust before your very eyes.

All on the SDF-1 are believed to have died, but when Rick lands his fighter at the crash site, Lisa comes running to him. He wonders how she survived, but Lisa tells Rick that Captain Gloval pushed her out an escape hatch at the last moment.

My reasoning for that would be that Lisa's battle experience and contact with the aliens would benefit Earth in case the aliens return. That Lisa can be a leader in the resistance. A strong military analysis, and one that cost lives. :(

Thanks for the info about images. Might help out slightly. I have not gotten to that particular episode in the SDF Macross version. Since it is 2 Volumes away. I will let you know the differences in that episode when I see it. I am certain they are very different though.

Minor Characters in Macross:

Vanessa Laird, Kim Kabirov, Shammy Milliome: 3 bridge officers who are rather young and inexperienced. Later get into a relationship with 3 micronized Zentradi spies. Shammy is called Sammy in Robotech.

Lynn Kaifunn: Minmay's cousin who Misa is strangley drawn to. Later has a relationship? with Minmay. AKA Lynn Kyle in Robotech.

Boddole Zer is the supreme commander of the Zentradi forces. Is known as Dolza in Robotech.

Star Blazers!!!
Developed by Leji Matsumoto as Space Battleship Yamato.
Features a desperate race to Iscandar by the courageous crew of the Yamato (AKA Argo). Little do they know, that Iscandar & Gamilon are in the same solar system. The Gamilon's are the militaristic race, who are bombarding the Earth with radiation bombs. If the Yamato does not get to Iscandar & back in 1 Earth year, the Earth will be totally inhabitable. Queen Stahsha is the leader of Iscandar, and is tired of the Gamilons. She offers the Earth a Cosmo DNA machine, which can fix the radiation. The only problem is that Iscandar is 148,000 light years away! She also provides the technology to travel that great distance, the Wave Motion Engine. Also the designs for the Wave Motion Gun.

Characters: English (Japanese)
Derek Wildstar (Susumu Kodai) the main character, who later becomes the capitain of the Yamato. He also defends the ship by flying as part of the Black Tiger sqaudron, and is the main gunner for the awesome Wave Motion Gun.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/Anime2/kodai.gif

Nova (Yuki Mori) love interest to Derek. Is mainly the Radar opperator on the Yamato. Also serves as an assistant nurse.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/Anime2/nova.gif

Mark Venture (Daisuke Shima) is Derek's best friend, and the leader of the Navigation crew.

Captain Avatar (Captain Juhzoh Okita) is the capitain of the Yamato, but secretly harbors radiation posioning which eventually claims his life. Is like a father figure to Derek.

Sandor (Shiroh Sanada) is a cyborg, and also Chief Technician on the Yamato.

Doctor Sane (Doctor Sakezoh Sado) is the ship's doctor.

Gamilons:
Leader Desslok (Desslar Sohtoh) the leader of Gamilon.

General Krypt (Hiss) Deslar's second in command.

Here is a special "Double Feature" post.

One is a very recent DVD that loads of people have been waiting for.
The other is a Musical Anime which I often talk about.

The First feature:

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/Anime2/castle-cat.jpg

First of all, the first feature is Lupin III in The Castle of Cagliostro. Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, acclaimed director of Spirited Away, Porco Rosso, Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle In The Sky, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Winds, Howl's Moving Castle, and My Neighbor Totoro.

It is called "...One of the greatest adventure movies of all time" by Steven Spielberg.

Here is what it says on the back of the DVD case. "When master thief Lupin III, aka "The Wolf" inadvertently steals a fortune in counterfeit bills from a casino, he is quick to realize the high-quality printing plates that made them are worth even more. Tracing the source of the money to the small European country of Cagliostro, Lupin and his team of colorful outlaws cross swords with the nation's mysterious monarch over his forthcoming marriage to the last princess of the Cagliostro family. It's a fast-paced adventure as Lupin must battle fearsome ninjas, rescue a damsel in distress and uncover the key to the lost Cagliostro fortune."

Here are some images from the film:

The 2nd Feature:

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/Anime2/200px-Interstella5555.jpg

The second feature is a Musical Anime. It is an anime done to music, the music is Daft Punk's Discovery (which if you are into Techno or House music I recommend). The film is called Interstella 5555 The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem (yes those "5"s are supposed to be there). It is directed by Leiji Matsumoto who did anime shows such as Space Battleship Yamato (Star Blazers), Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, & Queen Emeraldas.

Here is what it says on the back of the DVD case: "Four musicians from another galaxy are kidnapped by an evil manager to ultimately become the biggest band on Earth. Daft Punk's music meets Leiji Matsumoto's designs for this animated musical."

BTW this animated musical has absolutely NO dialog, it's all music, some has lyrics which the characters "sing", there is also instrumental stuff as well.

Here are some images from the show. As you can see Leiji Matsumoto's designs are very similar to all his designs for his other shows.

Before Earth:

On Earth:

If you are even remotely into Anime, I highly recommend both of these titles.

Here are 2 new shows that are currently on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim Saturday lineup (12 Midnight, check local listings).

Trinity Blood: This show is set in the future after some cataclysmic war, the Vampires have literally risen from the pages of literature to become reality. They are now at war with the left over human population. The Vatican has a special unit of vampire hunters led by Father Abel Nightroad (Who is secretly a special breed of vampire called a Krusnik which feeds on the blood of Vampires). It is only on episode 3 this week so you can still get into it without missing much.
PIC: (Father Nightroad & Sister Esther the main characters)
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/Anime2/tb2xu.jpg

Bleach: A very popular show in Japan (They are up to episode 95 and don't plan on stopping soon, also up to volume 23 in the Manga) about a young teenager Ichigo who has the ability to see the recently departed (ghosts). His life is turned upside down when he meets Rukia a "Soul Reaper" or as they are called in Japan "Death". Soon he is forced to become a soul reaper cause Rukia is seriously injured while fighting demonic ghosts called "Hollows". BTW the US dub of the show is really good so far, & features everyones favorite "Power Ranger" turned Voice Actor Johnny Yong Bosch as Ichigo. It also is only on the 3rd episode, so you can still get into it.
PIC: (From Left to Right: Tatsuki Arisawa, Orihime Inoue, Karin Kurosaki, Ichigo Kurosaki, Rukia Kuchiki, Keigo Asano, & Yasutora "Chad" Sado)
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/Anime2/Bleach-02-01-02.jpg

Warning these shows are very bloody, and violent. Trinity Blood is rated TV-MA, and Bleach is rated TV-PG13 (or whatever that equivilant is on TV ratings.) Do NOT let your youngsters watch these shows, it is ADULT swim for a reason!

NOTE: The time has changed for these shows, Trinity Blood is now on at 11:30 PM, and Bleach is on at 12 AM (Check local listings), also for all you night owls. Voltron (Lions) & Gigantor are on Saturday (well early Sunday) at 5 AM & 5:30 AM (Check local listings).

Any requests?

I got the last DBZ movie called Wrath of the Dragon recently. Also got the final volume of Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarök.

Dragon Ball Z Movie 13 (The last one!) Wrath of the Dragon (AKA If Goku Does Not Do It Who Will). Features Goku, Gohan, Trunks, Videl, Vegeta (rather briefly), Krillian (also really briefly), & Goten. (No Piccolo) Also appearing are 2 new characters; Hoi an evil priest intent on raising the phantom beast Hildegarn from his prison inside 2 people. Those 2 people are Taipon & his younger brother. Trunks grows really attached to Taipon as a big brother figure. During the film he is forced to make some hard decisions regarding Taipon. He also gets a certain sword in the movie. As normal Goku saves the day by using his ultimate attack, while he is in Super Saiyan 3 mode. That attack is the Dragon Fist (which looks very similar to the Ken/Ryu Shou Ryu Ken, in fact in the Japanese version Goku says Ryu Ken before he launches the attack.)
PIC: (Goku delivers the Dragon Punch)

As far as Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarök is concerned. Loki's daughter (he has 3 kids?) Hel shows up to try to kill Loki, cause she is tricked into thinking that Loki does not love her by Odin. After the resolution of that mess, Loki & the other gods consider returning to the realm of the gods. There is only one small problem, what to do about Mayuka, the girl that obviously loves Loki. So Loki decides to stay behind, and is quickly joined by the somewhat nicer other gods (who are not trying to kill him), then a mysterious girl shows up at the door....The End???

I finally broke down & purchased the Love Hina complete collection.

This is another "Harem" anime show, it is by Ken Akamatsu, who also wrote the story of Negima.

It is the story of the Ronin (a person who failed University exams) Keitaro Urashima. He made a promise 15 years ago to a mysterious young girl (He is 20 now), to get into Tokyo University, the only problem, he can't remember what the girl's name was. The other problem, is he can't even pass the entrance exam. Through a series of events, he becomes the manager of an all girls dorm, formerly run by his Grandmother. There he meets several girls: Naru (a rather firey red-head), Kitsune (an older women with a large libedo), Shinobu (a pre-teen girl, who has a huge crush on him), Motoko (an expert swordswoman who might just be falling in love with him), and Su (a mysterious foreign pre-teen girl with boundless energy). They are soon joined by a few other girls: Haruka (Keitaro's Aunt), Mutsumi (who may, or may not be the mysterious girl in question), and Sarah (the ward of a professor at Tokyo U).
They also meet up with Seta (the professor, who was Naru & Kitsune's tutor, and who Naru had a huge crush on). Tim will espesically like the pet of the group, a special breed of turtle, named Tama, who can fly, and loves hot springs (the dorm is also a hot springs). There is a few references to Gamera (a giant mecha-Tama), Godzilla, Ultraman, and Mothra. In one of the episodes Motoko has a dream that she gets transported inside a RPG video-game. In the video game, two Mutsuki twins sing a song to summon the Dragon King (really a huge version of Tama) the song & their outfits are very similar (and in fact are a parody) to the Mothra summoning song. Keitaro has really bad luck BTW, and is often "accidentally" going into places at the wrong time (such as when the girls are in the hot springs), this always results in one of two things A: Naru punches/kicks him into oblivion B: Motoko uses her special sword moves to knock him into oblivion. If you like romantic comedy anime, pick this one up.

Here is a picture of the group: (From left to right) Haruka, Su, Shinobu, Kitsune (Her real name is Mitsune), Motoko, Keitaro, & Naru.

Here is a pic of Tama.

Hope you enjoy this. There is also a Manga which is pretty similar to the anime, with a few changes (much like most Manga that get changed into Anime). It is 14 issues long (the show is 24 episodes). There are also 3 movies.

Unless there are any requests, this will be the last entry in the Anime Topic until probably after Christmas. Cause I will be gone from Oct. 29-Nov. 7 to Hawaii, and after that is when Retail stores get really busy. That is probably also when the Super Sentai topic will return as well.

I saw an episode of that last show once... REALLY bad dubbing. Might've been a fan dub, as I watched it online. Weird show.

It was probably a Fan-Dub. Cause the English dub is pretty good. It features Wendee Lee, Derek Stephen Prince, Dorothy Elias-Fahn, Julie Ann Taylor, Bridget Hoffman, Barbara Goodson, Mari Devon, Mona Marshall, & Kirk Thornton (BTW all of them had some role on the various seasons of Digimon).

Since the "Giant Creature Feature" was realy fun, I will probably do a similar event called "Animation Appreciation" with the following DVDs

R.O.D Read Or Die
The Castle of Cagliostro
Macross II Movie (not really part of the "real" Macross saga)
The World's Strongest DBZ Movie
My Neighbor Totoro or Kiki's Delivery Service (Depends on which one I buy).

BTW I bought a stuffed animal that looks EXACTLY like Tama off of Love Hina. I am up to volume 10 of the Manga now. It definately goes into the movies & past the anime series.

Also recently picked up Kiki's Delivery Service. Anybody who wants to introduce/get into the wonderful world of Anime should watch this feature. It is perhaps the best Studio Ghibli film ever IMO, even better than Spirited Away.
It has a really heartwarming story, great characters, and a really gorgeous look. Also it features an awesome dubbing job, by Disney. Including the best character actor EVER, the late Phil Hartman, as the wise-cracking Gigi the Cat.
Do yourself, and your family a favor & PICK IT UP NOW, before it is to late. It is availible on 2-Disc DVD NOW!

Just finished the Love Hina manga, it goes even beyond the OVAs. I won't give anything away, but here is a hint (Here comes the bride).

Also noticed that the same guy who did the Love Hina & Negima series did another series called A.I. Love You.

Which features another guy, who has difficulties talking to real girls, so he writes a computer program (an Artificial Intelligence) that is a girl. Of course some how she becomes real, and becomes his girlfriend. Which has the effect of attracting several other girls, who finally see his worth. It is a manga series with only 8 volumes.

Also the first volume of the new Guyver Bio Boosted Armor anime series is now in stores. This is the most complete version of the very popular, yet controversial series. The previous anime series and manga NEVER ended, it just stops. Also the Guyver Out of Control anime movie, never really had a closure either.

Also for all you '80s kids out there, Transformers The Movie The 20th Anniversary DVD is now out (Has it really been 20 years, since I saw this film in the theater? Darn I am OLD!!! Kidding!)

Any and all requests, or contributions to this topic are greatly appreciated. Even if we discussed some thing in the past, there is always more info availible. Or perhaps a new show is on the horizon, such as .HACK gets another series on Cartoon Network, or even "American Anime" such as Teen Titans, Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi, or Avatar.

Thanks

OK Corey Johnson (it seems you like lower case letters), do you like anime?
If not, please post elsewhere.

I picked up the first 3 Volumes of A.I. Love You Manga, so far they are really funny. I learned that this was Mr. Akamatsu's first Manga that he did.

Also got the first volume of Guyver Bio Boosted Armor, it shares many simularities with the first series that was done in the '90s, but they do have several new types of Zoinoids (the monster-type creatures that Sho fights).

Also picked up UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie Season 2 Volume 1, it introduces another rather odd Princess to the mix. Her name is Chorus, she loves quoting pop-culture & anime references constantly. She even dressed up as the "Martian Girl" off of Ghidorah The Three-Headed Monster (who I guess really destroyed Venus and NOT Mars, so therefore it was the "Venutian Girl")
She also does Transformers, Gundam, and other famous stuff (if a little obscure in certain occassions). Here is a picture:

OK then, Jin-Roh The Wolf Brigade it is, even though I personally have never seen it.

Here is an entire Website dedicated to the film.

http://jin-roh.viz.com/

Here is a rather long statement made on that site about the story.

"MADNESS COMES FROM FAIRY TALES"
–Political grafitti, postwar Germany

Uncompromising is the word for JIN-ROH: THE WOLF BRIGADE. The best Japanese animated film since Hayao Miyazaki’s PRINCESS MONONOKE or Hideaki Anno’s THE END OF EVANGELION, JIN-ROH may be fairly counted as the last great anime film of the 20th century–or perhaps the first great one of the 21st. A remarkable collaboration between two generations of filmmakers, JIN-ROH marries a hard-hearted script by Mamoru Oshii–the internationally acclaimed maker of GHOST IN THE SHELL–with the vérité direction of Hiroyuki Okiura, assistant to Oshii on GHOST.

An ominous new child of its pedigree, JIN-ROH goes to places beyond GHOST IN THE SHELL. Its protagonist is not another Major Kusanagi, GHOST’s cold and unsatisfied government cyborg looking to ascend to virtual angelhood. Like Kusanagi, JIN-ROH's Constable Kazuki Fuse (said "foo-seh") is a special-forces operative who kills in the name of the law. Like Kusanagi, he doubts the worth of his humanity. But unlike Kusanagi, Fuse is yet a man of flesh and blood, and he still remains human enough to feel cold–to be frightened–and to seek, with quiet desperation, to be absolved.

JIN-ROH's setting is Tokyo–not the Tokyo of the future, but of an alternate past. In the bizarre, ironic tradition of Philip K. Dick’s THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE, JIN-ROH presents a Japan that lost a different Second World War–not to America, but to Nazi Germany. Now, more than ten years after the defeat, the occupation troops have left, but their legacy is JIN-ROH’s twilight-zone city where the domestic terrorism of "The Sect" plays out in everyday bombings and street battles against the counterterrorist Capital Police–and their elite armored, helmeted, and red-goggled Special Unit.

One night in the sewers below Tokyo, Fuse and the men of the Special Unit confront a fleeing band of Sect members. Fuse has his gun out and aimed at one among their number, a young girl carrying an explosive satchel charge. He should shoot her. He means to shoot her. But in his hesitation, she detonates the bomb, and in the weeks that follow, Fuse falls under investigation by his superiors, even as he feels compelled to seek out the identity of the terrorist he failed to kill.

Her name was Nanami, and the young radical now haunts Fuse in double exposure: in the living face of her older sister, Kei, whom he tracks down, and with whom he begins a love affair–and as an unquiet spirit, in Fuse’s dreams…of a girl pursued, and torn apart by wolves. Fuse is paranoid of himself most of all…yet there is still more to fear.

JIN-ROH has as its subtitle, "The Wolf Brigade"–after the name of a rumored inner cabal within the faction-ridden Capital Police. The literal meaning of jin-roh is "man-wolf." This is not the term, okami-otoko, that the Japanese use to refer to a werewolf, and indeed, writer Oshii is concerned in this film with a different myth, that of Little Red Riding Hood–or rather, the more sinister, original version of the story known in Grimm’s Fairy Tales as Rotkäppchen.

The movie JIN-ROH is about those in society who are predators among prey. But these "beasts" never bother to change their shape; like Red Riding Hood’s wolf, they merely drape themselves with human clothes that do not even disguise the eyes, teeth and claws of a killer. Society rightly fears them. In JIN-ROH the Capital Police are themselves hunted–marked for elimination as a force by their own government, and by a public eager to forget the past and look the other way from the present. So what is it then, writer Oshii asks, that draws the human ever closer–when she can see that the wolf hides nothing?

The characters involved in the movie are:

BTW Tim not to be nitpicky, but back on page 2 of this topic is a rather LARGE picture of MS Gundam that still needs to be reduced...

Requests, or discussions always welcome!

I got the first volume of the Trinity Blood Manga, in the show Father Abel Nightroad is kinda goofy (before he becomes his Crusnik bad-ass self), and in the manga he is really goofy (even more so than the show). It basically covers the first 2 episodes of the show. They are also going to be coming out with the novel that the show is based on.

Here is an interesting discussion point. I just watched SDF Macross Vol. 5, and in the pictures on the back of Vol. 6 (which I will watch tomorrow) it shows Max & Milia's (Miria) baby. Who is "supposed" to be Dana Sterling in the Southern Cross portion of Robotech. There is a slight problem with this, the baby has green hair, just like Milia. In Southern Cross, Dana has red hair. This is the most obvious point that the Robotech saga, was 3 different shows, that they combined into one.

If you want proof here is some:

Max & Milia's baby

Just finishing watching the Macross saga, so far no mention of any SDF-2 (I am on episode 33), or any of that other Robotech stuff.

I also got the 2nd Vol. of Guyver Bio-Boosted Armor, it definately will be more complete than the previous series, cause in the preview for the next volume they allready show the mountain where the previous show just "ends" (which they did not get to until the last 2-3 episodes of that series).

Also picked up another romantic comedy called Please Teacher! It is about an alien girl who comes to Earth. Her secret is discovered by an 18 year old boy, who has a rare disease that makes him appear 15. Of course all kinds of weird happenings happen, and somehow they become married. Also she is his homeroom teacher, and it can not be revealed that she & the boy are married.

If anybody wants to discuss these shows or any others, feel free to.
If not, then this may be the end of the Anime Discussion Topic. Cause there is not any discussion at all. It seems kind of silly to have a "discussion" topic without any discussion.

Here is a new series I got into recently. It is called GaoGaiGar The King of the Braves. It is a giant robot series based off of other giant robot series of the '70s & '80s, in fact it was made by die-hard fans of that type of show.

Here is a pic of the Good Guys:
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/Anime2/GaGaGaCharacters-1.jpg

The 2 main characters (in the middle of the pic) are Guy Shishioh, a cyborg who pilots the GaoGaiGar & Mamoru Amami a mysterious boy who is an alien. Mamoru has the ability to fly, detect the machine bad guys, and save the humans the machines turn into their giant monster/mecha.

Here are the bad guys:
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/EricDent7/Anime/Anime2/522px-GaGaGaFourMachineKings.jpg

They are called the Machine Empire, they came to Earth about 10 years ago. The Machine Empire uses humans that have high amounts of hatred, and turns them into beings called "Zonders". They absorb a nearby source of material and become huge monsters.

About 10 years ago The Machine Empire shows up inside a mysterious ship that crashes. Also around this time Galeon shows up, with a baby Mamoru in his mouth, Galeon also saves Guy who is seriously injured, and turned into a Cyborg. Galeon fuses with Guy to become GaiGar, then when the chief Kohtaroh Taiga (who is voiced by the same voice actor as "Yami Yugi" in Yu-Gi-Oh (also Joey is there as well)) tells them to do "Final Fusion" they link up with a Stealth Fighter, a Drill, and a Bullet Train to become GaoGaiGar. The other vehicles are known as StealthGao, DrillGao, & LinerGao. There are also several other transforming robots (who look alot like certain Transformers) as well.

All together it is a very action packed show. It does suffer a little from the "Monster of the Week" syndrome, but makes up for it with entertaining characters and Mecha.

Not all the stuff is "old" covered in the discussion. Negima!, Godannar, the new version of Guyver, among others are discussed.

Suthern Bell, there are actually 2 Anime networks availible on select Digital Cable/Satelite providers check out Funimation.com or ADVFilms.com for info about if you get their channels in your area. They are called the Funimation Channel & Anime Network respectively.

If you feel that too many "old" shows are being covered, feel free to add a post about a new show that you enjoy. Be sure to have pics if possible. Please no Fansub shows, or "naughty" stuff (like Hentai).

I am attempting to show that Anime has been around alot longer than most people realize. As well as showing the roots of anime shows that are popular today.

So Tim, what do you think of the new Guyver series so far? Vol. 3 is out now, and this show is definately going to go farther than the '90s version of the Guyver. Cause they are only on Vol. 3 and they are near the end of that version of the series allready.

If you have not seen that version, here are some SPOILERS...

The Hyper Elite Zoanoid Team 5 show up before the "Lost Unit" does.
Miski does not figure out Sho's secret until almost the end of the show.
Dr. Balcus is not in the show.
It only covers the first 5 volumes of the Manga (There are over 140 chapters of the story, whicg is approximately 15 or so Manga volumes)
It features Steven Jay Blum as Agito!

You should try to locate it on Amazon or even rent it from Netflix.

I borrowed a couple of Anime DVDs from a co-worker.

The show is called EX-Driver.

It is set in the near future, where no one drives their cars, they are all AI controlled. Though once in a while the AI system breaks down. That's where the EX-Drivers come in. They have the special skills needed to drive gas powered vehicles without AI systems (all the AI cars must be electric).

They use their amazing driving skills to stop the cars and save the people inside. The show focuses on the Japan branch (there are branches all over the world). EX-Drivers are the only ones who can stop the AI cars (and other mishaps). The police let them do it, cause they can't handle the speeds & maneuvers that the EX-Drivers do.

The 3 team members are Lisa, Lorna, and Saitochi. All three are still in High School (Saitochi is only 12 but he is really smart so of course he is in Lisa & Lorna's class). Lisa does not like Saitochi, cause she thinks she is the best driver, though later I think she starts to like him. The 6 episode show is action packed, and has a rocking theme.

There is also a movie (which I also borrowed) it shows the Japan team going to the USA to compete in an EX-Driver special race. It also has a extra show which shows the former Japanese team (before Lisa, Lorna, & Saitochi). Which consisted of Rei & Nina (along with Joe, who is in the earlier show, but not the special extra).

If you are looking for a decent short show that deals with cars, and cute girls, check this one out!

I rented Howl's Moving Castle last night, and all I can say is WOW! That film is completely amazing, possibly the best work by Hayao Miyazaki ever (though I have not seen all of his stuff yet). It is about a young woman (which he seems to like to tell stories about young women/girls) who gets cursed into an old woman. She meets up with Howl, a mysterious wizard who lives in a weird steam powered moving castle. I won't spoil the story, but I HIGHLY reccomend this film for anyone who enjoys Anime or a good movie. There are some "big name" actors in the film, Christian Bale as Howl, Billy Crystal as Calcifer, who is a fire demon (he powers the castle) & Lauren Bacal as the "Witch of the Waste". Do yourself, and your family a favor, go & rent/buy this film NOW!

I hardly find that movie to be considered his best work. Spirited Away is by far his best. Of course this is my opinion, but Howl's Moving Castle really wasn't that great. It had no "OH ****!" story. And you watch it once and don't ever wanna watch it again. Spirited Away is always a pleasure to watch, and the story is amazing. And lets not forget the great Totoro. :D

Ahh, alot of people like Miyazaki movies. Most of them have similar plots.

Well think about it, the same guy making a ton of movies. It'd be hard for him to constantly make up completely new stuff. Totoro, Spirited Away, Laputa, and Mononoke are his best, and they're completely different than anything else he made. Which may be partially the reason they're quallifed as the best. But if ya go through the list of movies he's directed, you'd fall over.

EDIT: Oh ****! How the hell did I forget Whisper of the Heart... That movie was ****in' great.

Obviously you are missing out on some really good shows then. Let us get away from that subject ASAP.

Did you know the man who inspired the whole Anime look was Walt Disney? It's true, Osamu Tezuka who created Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy) took the look of the "Big Eyes" from Mickey Mouse, and adapted them for the creation of his Manga & later the very first Anime. Feel free to discuss...

OK that's nice...unfortunately I don't support any kind of illegal downloads, so therefore that show won't be discussed until it is officially brought over to the USA on DVD.

Be sure to support US (or where ever you live) legit Anime distributors, cause if you don't then Anime will cease to be released on DVD. Then all we can do is trade really bad DVD copies of un-translated shows (like they did in the past with VHS tapes).

Please only discuss stuff that has been put on DVD, or is currently showing on Cartoon Network/Anime Network/Funimation Channel.

This is not trying to discourage you from posting, but like I said before, Illegal downloads are PIRATEING and that is not good for anything.

I picked up a coupke of new DVDs recently.

The first is Megazone 23 Vol. 1. This series was made in 1985 (and was part of the "Robotech Movie") it is about a young man who discovers an insidious plot that could shake his whole exsistance. This is brought on by the discovery of a special motorcycle, that has transforming capabilities (and the toy is availible now BTW). The first Volume is 85 minutes long, and does drag in a few spots. You can sort of tell that it was made in the '80s, but it still holds itself pretty well. It also features perhaps the first "Virtual Idol" in an Anime, an AI program called EVE (Who is a predecessor to Sharon Apple of Macross Plus fame by many years). There are 3 volumes total, each one is about $20 each. I got the first for a steal at Sakuracon for only $12.

The second feature is PaniPoni Dash, it is a very random comedy (think Excel Saga), and features loads of pop-culture references. It is about a 10 year old girl, who is a MIT graduate, and then becomes a high-school teacher. She teaches a very odd class. There are 5 episodes on Vol. 1 for $20. The weird thing is that the collection box comes with Vol. 2 in it (which seems to be a occurring theme for the collection box sets lately, especially from ADV).

Both series are from ADV, and both feature long time Voice Actors. Megazone 23 features Vic Mignogna (Edward Elric, Brolly, & Hikaru Ichijyo), and PaniPoni Dash features Hilary Haag (Rosette Christopher, Seth Nightroad, & Anna Saruwatari). Both feature voice actor Monica Rial (Misa Haysae, Hyatt, and many others), who has a co-worker's of mine young daughter featured on her Myspace.

I borrowed another couple of Animes from a co-worker.

The first was Ranma 1/2. It is by Rukio Takahashi who also did Inuyasha. The English dub features several Inuyasha voice actors. At least it did for Season 3 which is the one I borrowed.

The basic story is that Ranma Satome & several other people fell into some cursed springs in China. If you fall into the spring and then later get splashed by cold water you could change into a girl, a panda, a duck, or a pig.

Ranma gets the girl one, and his father got the panda one. He is to be the sucessor to the "Anything Goes School of Kung Fu", but in order to do this, he has to marry the owner's daughter Akane Tendo, who he says that he does not like. Of course since this is a Romantic Comedy, he also has several other girls who think that they are his "fiance". Some of his rivals also want Akane to themselves, and 2 of them are cursed. One called Moose (like the hair care product) gets turned into a duck. The other called Ryoga gets turned into a pig, and is Akane's favorite pet P-Chan (she never figures it out).

BTW in order for them to change back to their normal selves, they have to get doused by Hot water.

The other Anime is Vampire Princess Miyu, a TV series about a Vampire who is sent to protect our world from evil beings that live in the shadows. It is very interesting. It also features some famous voice actors, like the voice actor who did Izzy on Digimon, and also Tenchi's voice actor.

It seems like this site is pretty quiet lately. Did anyone check out Animeonline.com yet? If so, what did you think?

Feel free to talk about your favorite series, as long as its on DVD/TV in the USA.

Just finished the last Gun X Sword volume! It was amazing!
Van & Company finally face off against the Claw, with loads of action. Plus it has a fun ending.

Also picked up UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie Season 3 Vol. 1. 2 more Princesses decide to hang around Earth. The first is Parma who likes girls with glasses. She recruits almost the entire high school, until Valkyrie intervenes. The other is Yamba, who is a real stickler for the "Official Rule Book Of Princess Behaviour". If anyone disobays a rule, she sends them into their own private "Hell", all of which are the person's worst nightmares come true. At least in their minds.

I also borrowed another series. It is called Ai Yori Aoshi. It is sort of Love Hina: The College Years. It's about a young man named Kaoru. He was part of a famous family, but dreaded it, so he left. He was set to marry a young girl named Aoi (Ahowi). Later they accidentally bump into each other again. Then they have to hide their relationship. Of course they suddenly come to live in a huge house with several girls & a pet ferrett. The English dub is even by the same studio that did Love Hina. It features Tony Oliver, famed voice of Rick Hunter, Lupin the 3rd, and lots more. It also features Lia Sargent who has done Dorthy Wayneright (Big O), Chun Li (Street Fighter Animes), Milly Thompson (Trigun), and several others.

Since I just keep talking about Voice Actors, maybe we should have a "Favorite English Voice Actor" topic. My personal favorite is Crispin Freeman, he did Allucard (Hellsing), Holland (Eureka 7), Mr. Joker (Joeseph Carter, Read Or Die), and several other roles (including 4 roles on Naruto! Itachi Uchiha, Ebisu, Shibi Aburame, & Fourth Kazekage).

PLEASE Help this topic! If you do, maybe I will Instant Message you with a special prize!

Picking an Anime title based on a suggestion of a Best Buy employee can be a good thing, or a bad thing. In the case of Origin Spirits Of The Past, it is a bit of both.

Good: Relatively cheap, $20 for 90 minutes. Gonzo still does awesome animation work. Decent dubbing by Funimation.

Bad: Really generic story, borrows way too many ideas from Miyazaki's films, and others. Seems a bit rushed in areas, could be a bit better. Sometimes the music overwhelms the dialogue, so you have to crank the volume to hear what they are saying.

Overall I give it a 6 out of 10. Maybe I should have just picked up Paniponi Dash! Vol. 2.

Just in time for Baseball season, I borrowed another series from my friend Jeff.

It is Princess Nine. The story of a girls high school's baseball team, not softball, baseball. It is very well done. It is kind of an older series from 2001, back when ADV still had those preview sections with techno music (you know the popular "do it now" song). Anyways it features Hillary Haag, Monica Rial, and Vic Mignogna. If you don't know who they are, look them up, they have done loads of voice acting, and are probably some of the more popular voice actors out there. The girls in the show come together slowly into a real team, and soon are facing the boys, and wining. The only pet peeve I had is that the storys end kind of left you wanting more. In other words it was a "To be continued" type ending, even though I don't think they ever did make a sequel.

Also I bought Nerima Daikon Brothers on a whim, I was not disapointed. It is a Musical Anime, every so often the characters break into a musical number, and in the English dub, the voice actors actually sang (instead of letting the Japanese voices take over). It features Greg Ayers, Chris Patton, and Luci Christian (again look them up). It has a similar style to The Blues Brothers. It is rated MA though so watch out for some naughty bits.

Don't always believe what the so-called reviewers say. This can be said about the series Final Fantasy Unlimited. The reviewers said that it barely has any ties to the Final Fantasy Universe. This is not true at all, so what if it does not have some long convoluted love story involved, or slightly effeminate looking guys. It does feature loads of Final Fantasy character. In almost every episode, the main characters run into some giant monster, and their wandering protector Kaze has to save them using his weird gun called the Magun. This gun uses soil shells to summon up creatures that Final Fantasy players will recognize (and a couple that are new). Such as Iffrit, Shiva, Ixion, and even Omega Weapon. Also features several Chocobos, Cactaurs, a Moogle, and Cid.

The main story is 2 kids are looking for their lost parents. Who about 12 years ago discovered a weird land called "Wonderland". The land is really a series of lands joined together with a Subway train. They are joined by Lisa, a user of a mysterious energy called "Kigen Arts". They are opposed by the Earl & his 5 henchmen, one of which is called Makenshi, who is the mortal enemy of Kaze. They call each other "White Cloud" (Makenshi), and "Black Wind" (Kaze).

The series is 26 episodes long, and is availible as a "Thin Pack" box now.

The only problem with the show, is again it has a "to be continued" ending. Why do anime creators do this? It really gets annoying watching a series that you enjoy, and then suddenly it's over, and you don't get closeure (i.e. Happy/Sad ending).

I have grown attracted to Gundam Wing over the years, and it's a great series in my opinion. :) There's always a new Anime/Manga coming out, so, in reality, it is quite hard, as to figure out who likes this Anime or that Anime.

Sorry I have been pre-occupied with some details this week. Trying to monitor some concerns and also a new Godzilla game on the way by Atari has had me a bit preoccupied lately. Though I do stop in and check to see if some posts against the rules have been done, but I haven't had a chance to do a lot of posting like before. Though fear not, I am getting back to my stride in here again and will catch up to speed.

On the comment about Eric double posting in seeing his post they are days apart and I will allow that. The concern for double posts usually comes from when I see posting minutes to an hour apart. I ask that this manner of posting not be done. If its been a day or two, I have no big problems with that.

Well Mr. Panther (you might want to change the first part of your name), feel free to do an article on Gundam Wing, since I don't think we covered that show yet. That Tengen Toppa Guren Lagann show looks interesting, it might be a good show to get licenced soon.

I recently borrowed the Ai Yori Aoshi: Enishi series from my friend Jeff. It was short but sweet. More of the same stuff that occured in the regular Ai Yori Aoshi series. I am attempting to watch the other show I borrowed, which is called Ceres Celestial Legend. But, it is rather hard to get interested in, maybe cause it's a Shojo show.

I forgot to mention another series that I borrowed. The show was Azumanga Daioh. It was super cute and super fun. It is based on a comic strip by Kiyohiko Azuma (which is out in Manga form now). It is about a high school. They get a new transfer student Chiyo Mihama, who is 10 years old, but is really smart so she is in High School. She is joined pretty soon by another transfer student from Osaka. Her name is Ayumu Kasuga, but everybody calls her "Osaka". Also in the main cast of characters are:

Tomo Takino: Highly energetic and tomboy like, also very competetive

Koyomi "Yomi" Mizuhara: Childhood friend/antagonist of Tomo, she is the most serious of the group.

Sakaki (no first/last name): Largest & strongest girl in the class, hides the fact that she really likes cute stuff. Especially cats, who have a habit of biting her hand.

Kagura: She joins the class in their 2nd year (of 3 years in Japanese high school), she is also very athletic (like Sakaki), and sees her as a rival.

Kaorin: She has a secret desire to be Sakaki's "friend" (but it might be more like love...) whenever she is around Sakaki, she acts all embarassed.

Of course you can't have a High School show without Teachers.

Yukari Tanizaki: The homeroom/English teacher of Class 3, which is the class with all the above characters. She is a bit of a slob, is lazy, and is a really bad driver (don't mention the word "Car" to Chiyo).

Minamo Kurosawa: AKA "Nyamo": The teacher of class 2, which is the "rival" class of Class 3. Mostly cause Ms. Tanizaki, and Ms. Kurosawa were school mates, and were "rivals". She also is the Gym teacher & Swim team instructor.
She is the total opposite of Yukari.

Mr. Kimura: A "creepy" type teacher, who is kind of perverted. He even states that the reason he became a high school teacher was "because of the high-school girls". This weirdness hides a very responsible and caring individual, who recycles cans, donates to charity, and is married & has a daughter.

This show is appropriate for all ages, and is very funny, and very cute. If you see this series on DVD, I highly recomend you buy it.

If it's by Gainax, then it has to be at least a bit "off the wall". Just like most of their shows. Such as Abenobashi, FLCL (Fooly Cooly), and Otaku no Video.

Of course I have not seen all their shows...

Ceres Celestial Legend was an OK show, if you enjoy Shojo. It was full of crying, kissing, and effeminate looking men. It also had an interesting plot, if you could follow it. Apparantly this "Angel" came to Earth 5000 years ago, she fell in love with a Japanese man. She gave him some of her power, to help him protect her, but it ended up driving him mad, after they had children. Fast forward to present day, 2 twins are the direct decendents of the 2 lovers. The girl Aya is the reincarnation of Ceres The Celestial Being, and her brother Aki is the reincarnation of Hikagi her lover. Then add into the mix Troya who is somehow a construct of the "Mystic Robe" the angel lost, who also loves (and impregnates) Aya. It was a very convoluted show. But, I guess most shows based on Legends are kind of hard to follow.

You will probably love it by 2 or 3. The rest of us did.

I knew at the very first part of the first episode that it was goin to be awesome. Hard to believe that that it Shimon! He'd learned the path to true manliness by then.

That Tengen Toppa Guren Lagann show looks interesting, it might be a good show to get licenced soon.

I wouldnt like it dubbed, Idoubt they could pull off the feeling of the show (Read:Kamina!) Crispin Freeman has a good enough voice, but he probably couldnt do it too well without a REALLY good Scriptwirter and maybe the freakin Japanese Seiyuu standing there coaching.

I hate how they removed that one person from the Opening.

Well considering I have no idea if the show is funny, serious, or weird. I also have no clue what the Japanese cast sounds like. Maybe you could describe the sound of the voices. There are loads & loads of Voice Actors out there. It just depends on who does the licencing (if it gets licenced). Obviously most of there more popular shows were distributed by ADV. So if they follow suit on this show, they could pull in lots of actors.

Anyways, I borrowed another show it is called Chance Pop Session. I will let you guys know if it is any good. It is supposed to have a really cool soundtrack, according to my friend Jeff.

OK then, back to normal DVD releases. (You can keep talking about whatever).

As I mentioned earlier, I borrowed Chance Pop Session. It is pretty good so far.
Only watched the first disc though.

Basically it's about 3 young ladies trying to emulate their icon by becoming singers. They get accepted into a school for music, and quickly get the attention of the headmistress (who used to be a pop idol), much to the dismay of older girls. It features Monica Rial, Hillary Haag, and others on the English dub (they don't sing though, they let the Japanese voices handle that).

I also bought a show that my friend Jeff said was good (I found it at the Half-Price Book store), it is called L/R Licenced By Royalty. It is about 2 agents that serve the country of Ishtar (which looks a lot like England). They get sent on various missions, and are kind of like James Bond with gadgets and disguises galore. I only saw the first disc, but I can tell it is really interesting. It was put on DVD about the time that Pioneer became Geneon. I just need to find the 4th volume (cause all they had was the 1st 3 volumes).

I finished Chance Pop Session, it was rather nice. The only problem was since it was only a 13 episode show, they kind of spoil the story about halfway into the show. The story is the 3 girls are really long-lost sisters, and their mother just happens to be the headmistress of their music school. They almost win a grammy-type award (but their idol Reika does & tells them the news about their mother).

I was watching All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku Dash in Japanese recently, and discovered an interesting fact. The Japanese voice actress (seiyū) who does Nuku Nuku is Megumi Hayashibara. She is known as the "queen" of the seiyū because she is the most prolific voice actress in Japan.
If you are not familiar with her work, you must not listen to the Japanese track of many animes. Her most famous roles are: Rei Ayanami in Neon Genesis Evangelion, Lina Inverse in Slayers, Ranma Saotome (Female version) in Ranma 1/2, Musashi (Jessie of Team Rocket) in Pokemon, Ai Haibara in Case Closed, & Faye Valentine in Cowboy Bebop. She also is a very prolific singer. She sings loads of anime themes. Most of the shows above she sang a theme song in, she also sang the theme songs in Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, Love Hina (she was Haruka in the show), Lost Universe (she was Canal Volphied in the show), Saber Marionette J, Shaman King, and the Japanese version of Tenchi Muyo In Love (The first Tenchi movie, she plays Achika who is Tenchi's mom in the movie). She has over 200 roles to her credit, and at least 300 anime themes. She also has a music career that has 6 CDs so far, and all of them debuted in the top 10 in Japan.

Well according to the article that I read about that Gurren Lagann show, that episode was directed by a guest director. It caused a major rift with the creator of the show. I think he even resigned from his postion.

I did not expect to get any anime for my birthday, but I was wrong. My friend Jeff came over (cause I invited him) and he got me the first 2 volumes of Scrapped Princess. The basic story is there is a 15 year old princess, who according to some prophecy will destroy the world when she turns 16. Every one is trying to kill her, however she is protected by her adopted older brother & sister. The brother is an expert swordsman, and the sister is a powerful sorceress. The setting is kind of a mix of old world Europe, with some fantasy elements mixed in.

You are well informed. Yes the direct of that episode was also the director on the anime Beck and resigned after witnessing the horrible backlash from the fans of the series, I believe the Co-founder of Gainax resigned in the same press conference. Rest assured Shin, it goes back to normal in 5.

Nope never heard of that one. Feel free to tell us about it though.

The story is set on a fictional world where people co-exist with creatures called Yoma. These creatures eat the human's guts and can desguise themselves to be just like a normal human, making almost impossible for normal humans to identify Yoma.

However there is an organization that eliminates Yoma when requested by the villages, the members of the this organization are called Claymores. Claymores are half-human half-Yoma (they were created when a human takes the blood and flesh of a Yoma, this hasn't been much explained in the series, perhaps someone who reads the manga can help?) which makes them very powerful since they have Yoma powers, making them move faster, become stronger (which allows the Claymores to move their huge swords with grace) and gain the ability to sence Yoki (basically means the Yoma's life energy).

I guess this sums up the main things without spoiling too much. If anyone has more info feel free to add it :)
(If I remeber something else that I consider relevant I'll add it).

I don't think it makes a difference, though, since Clare does interesting things later on.

Oh, so Clare really took Teresa's flesh and blood, I thought it was some way of Clare saying she wanted to become a Claymore. So that can explain why Clare isn't very powerful (at first sight)

I bought the Scrapped Princess boxset, cause it was imposible to find individual discs of Vols. 3-6. Plus it was cheaper that way, cause most used vols. (only saw 4 & 6) were $15 each, the boxset was $39.99. It was rather interesting, it went a totally different direction than it suggested in the begining. Basically the story is 5000 years ago humans were fighting aliens in space. The aliens convinced a young woman named Mauser to betray the humans. In doing so, the humans got "locked up" on a seperate continent from the rest of the world, and placed in a society that resembles the Middle Ages.
5000 years later her distant decendant (I assume it's so cause they look alike) is the Scrapped Princess, who has the choice to "unlock" the humans, which she does.

I just picked up Hellsing Ultimate Vol. 2, and boy does it seriously rock! It is full of blood, guts, and crude language (it is rated MA) so it is not for kids. It shows the attack on Hellsing HQ by the Valentine Brothers, and the full power of Alucard (BTW if you type his name backwards you'll know who he really is).
If you are a fan of Hellsing, or vampires in general, go out & buy this now!

Also got the 4th volume of Paniponi Dash, it is even weirder & wackyier than the previous shows. Basically the girls go on a picnic, go over a cliff, reinact parts of MIB (including Tommy Lee Jones), try to find the missing Ichijo, and have a school festival (to try to make $ for charity, which Becky forgets to tell them that the money is going to charity). Plus in the extras it features more discussion with the voice actors about their school experiences.

Just bought S-Cry-Ed Anime Legends box set, will do a review & write-up later.

If you have not seen the show on Cartoon Network, here is a quick synopsis.

A huge earthquake destroys Tokyo, and 22 years later people who lived in that area have these psychic powers. They are called Alters, and each person who is an Alter has different abitilties. Kazuma is an Alter who is trying to make a living outside the city. He runs into trouble with a police-type group called HOLD, who use Alters in their special unit called HOLY.

It is a really cool show.

Hey eric, the Anime Legends box set's are the ones where they have the ENTIRE series in one buy right?

EricDent
06-21-2007, 03:39 AM
Yep, with the exception of the recent Big O set, which only comes with the first part (not Big O II). So it's 13 episodes on 4 DVDs (blech) for $40. They are all about $40. These are just repackaged versions of the older DVDs from the individual DVDs, so they include the "Special Features" (at least the ones I own do).

I have seen these collections (there are probably more) at the store:

S-Cry-Ed
Outlaw Star
Scrapped Princess
Love Hina

Geneon is doing a very similar packaging job for their releases of Tenchi Universe & Tenchi In Tokyo.

Then there are the collections from ADV, these are called "Thin Packs". Because they are Slim-line cased DVDs in Art-Boxes. These sets usually do not feature any of the "Special Features" that were found on the original individiual DVD sets (with the exception of Trailers). They have these sets (maybe more out there somewhere).

Chrno Crusade
Final Fantasy Unlimited
All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku TV
All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku Dash
Maburaho
Azumanga Daioh

These sets are a great way to buy a series, especially if you are low on $. Obviously you would have to know what the series is about before you buy it (which is why I am holding off on Maburaho). If anybody has seen that, can you tell me if it is good? I liked Negima, and am a Harry Potter fan, so that is why I am interested in the show. Cause it is about a magic school (at least that's what it says on the back of the DVD). It also looks like a Harem anime, cause it has a total loser who gets a bunch of ladies, who all want him.

Thanks for the info. I will probably hold off on buying it for now. I am seriously considering getting Azumanga Daioh, cause it was really cute & fun.

Finished S-Cry-ed, it was really cool! I had never seen the whole show, just parts of it when it ran on Cartoon Network. Obviously from what I saw in the Manga (Vol. 1) it is way different. It has loads of special features on each disc, such as Comic Sound Stories, where they tell a chapter of the Manga as a Radio Drama. My favorite character has to be Straight Cougar, he is just so darn fun. Kazuma is really cool as well.

The story is Kazuma is a native Alter user, who gets caught up in a huge struggle to determine the fate of "The Lost Ground", which is the name of the area of Tokyo that got destroyed. An Alter user is a person born with an inate ability to transform matter into different objects. Each Alter power is different. Kazuma has the ability of turning his right arm into a formidible weapon. This weapon looks like an armored arm, but has 3 "bullets" that he uses to destroy his enemies. Later on he gets even stronger and gets a new ability, called "Shell Bullet". He has a rival within HOLY, Ryuhou is an Alter user who has an Alter called Zetsuei, which at first is a humanoid looking alter that can act independently.

I won't spoil too much, but if you enjoy loads of action, you should seriously think about getting this show. There is also elements of drama, sci-fi, romance, and lots of angst. It also features quite a few deaths, including several main characters. It is 26 episodes long, so it is quite a bargin for only about $40 for the entire show (The Anime Legends version).

Feel free to add anything else, just don't spoil the ending.

I guess then patience is a virtue. I also recently purchased Azumanga Daioh. This show can pretty much be watched by anybody, and is a great way to introduce Anime to people who have never watched Anime (Just like IMO Godzilla's Revenge is a good movie to show people who have never seen Godzilla).

I just bought Nausicaa, I personally have never seen it. I hear it is really good, and I am a fan of Miyazaki's films. I will do a quick review when I watch it.

I borrowed some more Ranma 1/2 from Jeff, it is season 3-4, and 5-6. I had seen season 4 allready. Season 1-3 has a different English VA for the boy version of Ranma. Seasons 4-8 has Richard Cox (he did Inuyasha). So a bunch of Inuyasha VAs are featured in the program (and a few Beast Wars Transformers as well). The so-called "Seasons" don't really have any sort of story-line, so you could probably get into the show at any point. You would just need to know that certain characters change forms when splashed/immersed in cold water and back to normal in hot water.

The characters who change:

Ranma: Changes from a boy (with black hair) to a girl (with red hair)
Genma (Ranma's Dad): Changes from a middle aged man into a Panda
Ryoga (Ranma's main rival): Changes from a boy into a black pig (named P-Chan by Akane (Ranma's fiancee) who never figures out who P-Chan is)
Shampoo (Another self-proclaimed fiancee): Changes from a Chinese girl into a cat (Ranma is afraid of cats)
Moouse (in love with Shampoo, another rival of Ranma): Changes from a boy into a duck

I am also going through my DVD collection and re-watching them in Japanese (at least the ones I have not seen). I just finished Trigun. I already did Dual, Tenchi Muyo, Tenchi Universe, Tenchi GXP, and Love Hina (includes the movies).

I forgot a "Thin Pack" listing:

Happy Lesson

Feel free to add more.

OK, I watched Nausicaa & The Valley of the Wind. It was pretty good. It is an older Miyazaki film (1984). It holds up pretty well.

Anyways, here is a quick plot:

Nausicaa is a Princess of a small kingdom called The Valley of the Wind. It is set in the far future, after some cataclysmic war has caused loads of dammage. The Earth is healing itself using a jungle, which is poisonous, and is protected by tons of giant insects. The Valley lives in harmony with the jungle, until one day a mysterious airship crashes, and changes the lives of everyone.
The cargo of the ship is the last remaining "Giant Warrior" from the war, and of course everybody wants to use it to destroy the jungle (and other countries).
Nausicaa tries to stop all the fighting, and in order to stop the onslaught of the giant insects (called Ohms) makes the ultimate sacrifice. Of course the Ohms in their gratitude for returning their young (which is what lured them to the Valley) revive her. Then everone lives happily ever after, with the jungle.

It is a pretty interesting film, especially with today's political & environmental problems. I would recomend it. Plus it has Patrick Stewart as a VA, so it has to be pretty good.

I finished Nerima Daikon Brothers, and boy was it fun! If you are looking for something that is totally different from any other Anime out there, pick this series up! It is only 12 episodes long, so it is easy on the pocketbook.

There are several extra features that make the DVD easier to watch. You can obviously pick either English or Japanese language. However you can also listen to commentary from the director and Japanese voice actors, view on screen "pop-up video" type helpful tidbits (called ADVid Notes), or even have the song lyrics on the screen for all the hillarious (and sometimes hard to follow) songs.

I also got vol. 4 of L/R Licenced By Royalty, but have not watched it yet.

I am planning on watching Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi in Japanese soon, followed by Ai Yori Aoshi (and Enishi) in Japanese. Then I will go to a family reunion until next Sunday (I am leaving Wednesday July 11, so I guess I will have to wait to see Harry Potter).

Probably it would be best to buy them online. I am not sure if your area still has Suncoast video stores, but if they do they had a good selection of Anime. They charge a bit more (a $20 DVD is about $25) but if you join their club ($20 for 1 year) you get 10% off (includes sales & used DVD) plus on your B-Day you get another 10% off (IIRC).

Best Buy is a pretty good place for anime, but some locations only carry the latest volumes of a show, so in the Case Closed area it would probably only have whatever volume they are up to now.

Not sure what else there is out there, since Walmart, and Fred Meyer (which is only in the NW) carry only very mainstream Anime (Naruto, Inuyasha, DBZ, Miyazaki movies, GITS, & Full Metal Panic).

Anyhow, I watched L/R vol. 4 it was very good. The only problem is that it has a sad/happy end. The terrorist group "Angel" is finally revealed. The 15 year princess gets shot, by L/R but lives thanks to her pendant. She runs away from being the princess (cause everyone thinks she is dead). Then one of the L/R agents gets stabbed by a bad guy, I think he dies? They were sort of vague about this one.

Now I am watching Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi in Japanese, which explains what is going on even better than the English version.

Other places like Deep Discount DVD, Right Stuff, etc. Might have better prices. I am surprised that with a series as long as Case Closed is, they don't have Season box-sets.

I used to watch that show when it aired on Cartoon Network (like 3-4 years ago), back then I did not have Direct TV so I had to wait until 12 AM to watch it, and if I missed it then I would have to try to stay up till 3 AM. The show was really interesting, but after I heard how long it was (I think it's still going in Japan) I kinda lost interest. I normally avoid really long shows, cause once they are not on TV, you have to buy the DVDs, and in Case Closed's case that is at least 50 DVDs (or so).

Right now, I'd have to give my reccomendations to BLACK LAGOON, Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu, and Fate/Stay Night.

I feel alot of people need to experience the story, if not just the concept of F/SN. Black Lagoon may be a little rough, but if you like heavy action and F'd up realism, there's your show. Haruhi was just Whimsical and good. I saw all these shows as fansubs, so I reccomend the DVDs, though I havent gotten a F/SN DVD to hear the dub yet.

I finished watching UFO Princess Valkyrie (AKA UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie) in Japanese through season 2. Season 3 is currently being borrowed by my friend Jeff. They allready anounced that there will be a season 4 (and I think season 5). There is a thin-pack of season 1 out for about $40.

Also they released a thin-pack version of Godannar for about $60. If you have not seen this one, and are a giant-robot fan, check it out. A bit of a warning, it is loaded with tons of fanservice, and the ending is a "to be continued" type ending.

For some reason Disc 3 of Giant Robo was messed up. It sounded like they were speaking in slow motion & it kept stuttering. The disc was clean & so was the player. So I skipped to the Ginrei special (I have seen Giant Robo before), now I am watching Ai Yori Aoshi in Japanese.

I also decided to pick up Mabaraho, so far it is pretty fun. I think it's by the same people who did both Happy Lesson (art style is similar), and Ai Yori Aoshi (some characters look pretty similar).

If you don't know by now, I am going to be moving to Texas in about 4 weeks. I will be in the Georgetown area, which is between Dallas & Austin. The main reasons are cause I don't currently have a job, and Seattle is really expensive to live in. Texas is about 1/2 the price of houses/appartments, plus there are tons of places to work (they pay better too). Maybe, just maybe, I will even get a job at either Funimation or ADV.

Here is an interesting tidbit for discussion.

What do you think about the upcoming Live Action Hollywood films based on Anime? They are doing Speed Racer, and Evengellion. There are rumors of Voltron, & Gatchaman (not LA but CGI) in the works.
