I rode the Indiana Jones "et le Temple du Péril : à l'envers" at Disneyland Paris in 2001 while it was running backwards (they changed the direction in 2000) and it gave me a nasty headache because you can't see the corners coming. It was so rough that you end up smacking your head into the restraint every time the coaster changes direction! My mum even rode it with me and when she got off she said that she was hurting from it!

Jokers Jinx, hands down. I rode it back when the coaster had over-the-shoulder restraints and it was like being put inside a dryer and constantly being thrown around. It's pretty rough, you can't see where your going, you can't tell which way is up or down. Thats when you whip out the Tylenol :)

I've ridden Joker's Jinx and didn't think it was too bad. We rode it's near twin Flight of Fear at Kings Island a couple weeks ago and felt it was in bad need of new wheels, but at least it's only got only lap bars. Maybe Cedar Fair can deal with that next season, but a little after we rode that coaster I rode what might just be the roughest ride I can recall. I know a couple of you warned me about this one. It's got to be Son of Beast. That first curving hill after the first drop is just way too much, and it just keeps up that way until you pray for the loop, because that's the only smooth part of the ride!

Most brutal with nothing that I found to be even remotely fun about it was Flashback at Tragic Mountain. (Oh, sorry, that's supposed to be Magic Mountain. Must have been a typo.) Purely my opinion, but I think it makes M&D's Tornado look smooth in comparison, and (as David Ellis remarked) that's also one brutal coaster.
Son of Beast is also brutal, but at least it has some spots that I find to be fun.

Psyclone at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, CA. Just stand at the exit and watch everyone get off of this mega-jerky wooden roller coaster holding their necks, hips, etc. I'm really surprised they aren't sued over this torture device! Then again, some people like their roller coasters rough.

Psyclone and the Gwazis are fine in my book. The only "rough" GCI coaster I've been on was Roar at Six Flags Africa, and I'd chalk that up to poor maintainance. But I also know people that think Mean Streak's too rough and I loved that ride.
David, Ninja at SFoG, I'd agree that's a nasty, but look at it's heritage, Vekoma/Arrow custom loopers are routinely rough rides wherever you encounter them.

Corkscrew at Alton Towers. So rough, noone comes off smiling. Everyone complains of headaches. But it's a listed structure. Whatever. Give me a bulldozer and I'll happily do the dirty work.:up: Plus, it's 26 years old, off the shelf Vekoma.

I'd not rate Corkscrew at AT as that rough. Maybe it's because I'm tall enough to avoid to much ear bashing but I found it quite pleasant. It was certainly smoother than I remembered. I suspect the trains may have gained new wheels but it wasn't a bad ride at all.
In my opinion Gauntlet at Camelot is the roughest coasters I've ridden, it's a rough old Pinfari ZL42 worthy of being scrapped or shipped elsewhere, like the top of Mount Etna.

I like the Georgia Cyclone a bunch. But it seems there's a bunch of these CyClones at various Six Flags parks that people hate that I like.
However, my wife in general, doesn't like the beating she takes on woodies or Vekoma/Arrow loopers.

06-17-2006, 12:45 PM
I disagree with the any SLC, the new ones are actually not bad plus they've added soft 'face pads' on the restraints to prevent ear bashing. I was pleasantly surprised at the smoothness of Kumali at Flamingoland, UK, it's not quite a B&M smoothness but it wasn't a bad ride at all.
soundgodz
06-17-2006, 01:15 PM
I haven't seen a new SLC at the parks I've been to, and of those, it's the Six Flags and Paramount parks that have them all, and most of them are clones of the same ride. I think I know the new horse collars of which you speak, but in my experience, they didn't help much. That said, the Vekoma Face Off boomrangs are pretty smooth, but it's still a boomerang. Whan we start saying what our favorites and most disliked are, it's very very subjective. If any of you have good things to say about Vekoma in general and their SLCs in particular, it's just what feels good to you, and I can't really argue that.

There's a reasonable picture of the cheek pads on the harness here (http://www.rcdb.com/ig2421.htm?picture=14)

06-17-2006, 05:12 PM
I was sure those where what you meant. The more I ride, the more I know, somebody's got to design a better horse collar that doesn't bat your ears so badly. That's Vekoma's newer standard horse collar, I recognize it from Top Gun in Toronto and from Deja Vu.

It's a Pinfari, so it will be quite rough. I had a fairly insane ride on there recently where I got on the front and nearly the rest of the train piled on the back. This resulted in the weird experience of going slowly down the drops and madly accelerating up the hills and round the curves.

That happens when you are at the front anyway I have found, for a more natural feeling ride, you have to be at the back.
As you come out of that little canvas tunnel, that is when it hurts alot, a little tiny bump which throws you out of your seat, and me being quite a large person, (about 5' 9" and about 12 1/2 stone), it hurt my legs alot.

I had the pleasure(?) to ride a Six Flags Mind Eraser at Darien Lake the day before going to Canada's Wonderland and riding the exact same coster in the name of Top Gun, a Vekoma 689m Standard SLC clone. Needless to say, what i thought of one, I thought of the other. You should try Top Gun at Carowinds. Now that, is a proper inverted coaster! B&M smooth flying over the crowd again and again.

There's no need for me to repost the pics. There's also no way I can argue they're the same. Yes, the track is different. It also looks to be a narrower gauge than the SLC. I'll admit, I must have been confused by the ride trains, which look similar, but again, if the gauge is different, they are only similar and of common heritage.

Holy crap! Are you f'n kidding me? A family/kiddie coaster that's too rough? Wow!
Edit: On further research, this coaster is a close relative of Jaguar at Knott's. Again, a coaster that I personally rank higher than general opinion. Beldin, I don't recall the Mini Mine Train as being rough. In fact, I remember it being smooth... course, I was little then. Right now, there's two very rough coasters I've been on. Grizzly at PKD before the current retracking... she's very smooth now. And I think it's called Animation Department at SFA... incredibly rough for a children's coaster. In fact, I recommend that you don't ride it, unless you really need the credit.

Viper at SFGADV. Thankfully, it has been replaced with the marvelous El Toro!
Medusa at SFGADV is starting to get a little bumpy.
Though rougher, or equal to Viper is Son of Beast. Great ride, horrible experince.
For those who have ridden RMT at SFGADV. The hill right before the turn on the lake at the end of the ride really gives you a jolt! When they had the old restraints, and the bars would only go down to the first hip it touched, my brother had not protection, and almost got thrown out of the ride. The guys behind them screamed "Oh_____ That kid was floatin!"

The most painful steel coaster I've ridden would have to be the Manhatten Express at the NY NY Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Then, the most painful wooden coaster would have to be The Rattler at SFFT. It looks very enjoyable from the outside (and it was, to a degree), but it dishes out the pain on small-framed people. I was unfortunate enough to ride it by myself even though it has room for two per seat. Now, although I'm fairly tall, I basically have no excess weight on me which = PAIN ON BIG WOODIES. The restraint did not go all the way down on me, so throughout the entire course I was flailing wildly from side to side in the seat. I counted a few new bruises after that one. :D The funny thing is, when I rode this coaster a few years ago, I remember it being much less crazy, but the point of a woodie to have that out-of-control feeling, which I can say that The Rattler excels in. But I must insist that this was too out-of-control for me to handle more than one ride.
Of course, I can see why someone who could sit more comfortably than I did in the seat would have a much more enjoyable experience since they could probably go through it without any minor injuries. :p

Is NY NY an enjoyable coaster? I'm off to Vegas soon, and would like to know. ;)
The New York, New York is the hotel/casino where it is located. The coaster itself is called the "Manhattan Express". It's not necessarily a bad coaster, it's just not very exciting. Seems to have just been built for the novelty value. If it's your first time, I would recommend it so you could see it for yourself (be warned: it's a Togo). The other roller coasters (that I know of) are "Speed" at the Sahara and "Canyon Blaster" at the Circus Circus Adventuredome. I haven't been on either, but they seem to be okay. If you want thrill rides, then I recommend anything on top of the Stratosphere. "Insanity" is my favorite. ;)
The roughest coaster ive ridden was Ghostrider at Knott's. Murdered my back.
Manhattan Express was ok for me. But then i have a pretty high tolerance for bumpiness on steel coasters.

The Grizzly wooden coaster at great america is absolutely terrible. I sat in the back seat, at after the first drop, it completely slams you down in your seat and you cant stay fastend into your seat, because the seatbelts don't even fasten all the way. It's pretty much a nightmare. Also the big dipper wooden coaster at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk is terrible. Everyone ive talked to says that it's soo good, but it's really, really really really rough, bumpy, and when you fly around the turns, you just about get whiplash! If you go there, and there's a really long line for the Big Dipper, just skp it, and go on the steel coaster instead, because it's much better (but compared to other steel coasters, it's not very good.)

We visited Paramount Carowinds this past Saturday. Waited in line two hours to ride the Borg Assimilator. I wasn't impressed. My shoulder is still aching just a bit. It's just unnatural to start and end a flyer laying on your back. I thought about trying to recreate it, but it would be impossibe in RTC.
Thunder Road, the oldest woodie there (running since 1976), is pretty doggone rough. The lapbar punched me in the gut so hard, I was grunting like a pig almost the entire ride. My wife got bounced so hard that her shin hit the underside of the seat in front of us. She's got a pretty nasty bruise and a knot the size of a quarter. That was riding the one that's running forwards. We didn't ride the twin that's running backwards.
Top Gun - The Jet Coaster was a wonderful experience. I'm going back to Carowinds on Friday and I'm gonna do that one again. I'll also hit the ones that we didn't get to ride on Saturday. The Hurler had mechanical problems as did Ricochet. When we walked by the Carolina Cyclone, it was stuck on the lift hill. It just wasn't a good day for coasters. We only rode three and saw a show. When the thunderstorm came up, we decided it was time to go. I didn't mind, really. I love having a season pass and it's only an hour away. I'll hit all the coasters there eventually.

Yeah, I agree, it's rough...but I see it more of as a Dinn 'shaker' type thing. It shakes really bad.

Goudurix at Parc Asterix, Paris. It hurts just from the drop to the brake run. And at Parc Asterix all their brakeruns doesnt slow the train down, no it stops it so hard that it hurts.

People who list Wooden Coasters should realize that half the fun of a woodie is that it is rough as hell.
That is why I absolutly love the helixes on American Eagle and The Beast. It's painful but it is awesome.
But Steel Coasters. Since most of the time you have the over-the-shoulder restraints, the roughness becomes a huge problem.
That is why I hated Steel Phantom and was quite happy to see it go. ShockWave at Six Flags Great America though I liked even though it was rough. Same with Demon.
And for Vekomas. I have been lucky I guess. The only ones I have ridden are Rock N RollerCoaster and Deja Vu. Of course both of those coasters are actually among my top 10 coasters.

I'd have to say one of the roughest I rode was the Excalibur at Valley Fair. I thought it was funny that during the first turn you can hear everyone on the ride grunt in pain from getting slammed to the side. This is mostly likely a never ride again coaster.
Also I think Flight of Fear at Kings Dominion was brutal. My head just kept getting knocked from side to side. I did sit in the very last row though. It was a little tamer near the front.
I agree the SOB kicks the crap outta you, but what can you except from a woodie that goes 78mph. Maybe if they made the seats a little bigger it wouldn't be so bad. It was a ***** trying to cram myself into that car. That ride is probably one of my top 10 favorites though.

Sorry, but I disagree with that statement. Wooden coasters should be wild, intense, full of "shake, rattle and roll", powerful, airtime-filled, throws you around a bit....but NOT painfully rough! "Rough as Hell" pain is not fun...wild is fun, boisterous is fun, intense is fun, painfully rough is not.
Painful bits on wooden coasters just shouts "re-track me please"...leaving coasters to get painfully rough is a cop-out by parks, trying to save a few pounds / dollars in maintenance, but pain is not the intention, fun is.
Just my thoughts.
David.
