View Full Version : Scenery Makers (What do you use?)

I was wondering if it would be a good idea to get a list of 3D programs that can make objects for RCT3 and who uses them.
Like: Program - User
Milkshape - Vodhin
The reason being that you could ask specific questions to scenery makers who use that program if you have problems.;)

This sounds like a good idea. It could help newbies out alot.

Milk Shape, mainly because there's a bunch of folks here who use it, too. so that helps with the learning curve...
I tried a few others and said no way... MS is far easier (for me, at least)

Thank you all so much for your replies.
I guess Milkshape is the WINNER.
Soooo... would anyone care to make a tutorial starting with Milkshape and ending with Jonwils's importer (including pictures for those who do not understand very well) like myself? I know I would really appreciate this very much and who knows, others may also benefit.

I think that I might put a tutorial up soon if I have enough time.

Blender and Anim8or
aren't both of those 3d modelers?

Yep i use two too. 3ds max and milkshape, but i use 3ds max the most. Allthough i've been having trouble with the textures.

So is Shade (see my first post), but they have features that the other doesn't so I use both! However, I do not recommend Shade to a beginner due to the fact that it is very difficult to use and cost about $100. It was free for me thought!

I've got notes and a tool kit for MilkShape (like custom backgrounds for the MS view windows that tell me which way I'm looking in RCT3) that is slowly coming together as a mini-tutorial/how-to/what the heck/whoops kinda thing that I will eventually have on my website. I still have a LOT to learn before I can teach (and remember: those who can't, teach... those who can't teach, critize :p ).

i use SketchUp
because it's free and i can save them as an *.OVL file
and it is nice for me
if you wanna see what i have made so far, look to my rock 'n' rollercoaster topic

This is also the kind of information that I would love to have. :noob:
Maybe a good name for your tutorial could be...
"Milkshape For Dummies" lol

I'm sorry - saving .ovl files in sketchup? I'm not sure about that.

i save as an object file in sketchup.

it was obj format not ovl ;)
I am using Sketchup or 3D Studio Max then Milkshape for mapping.
My tutorial is still on process, but done lot of the lists.

i never realised sketchup was free-which is better sketchup or anim8or?
The free version 100% does not support any obj or anything even closely related to getting models in to RCT3. It's only good for creating models to be used for Google Earth which is a completely different format. The only version that supports the needed formats to convert for use in RCT3 is the retail version, with a price that makes PhotoShop seem like purchasing box of Q-tips.
There's trial version of the full Sketchup, but once you wet your appetite it's over.

What all would I need if I wanted to make some scenery with Anim8tor? Beyond jonwil's importer and Anim8tor itself.
You need Bitturn to convert to ASE format so that Jonwil's importer can read the files, and you need a paint program like the Windows included MS Paint (run in terror), or Adobe PhotoShop (paradise) to build and save your textures in 256 Color, 8 bit BMP format. There are other paint programs around on the web as well. Last but not least, you need moocho patience.

Is Bitturn free?
Is Bitturn free?
Yes indeed -
Here's a linj to a page it can be dowloaded: http://mirex.mypage.sk/index.php?selected=1 --just scroll down a bit.

3DS Max 8. I just find it easier for some reason. Only thing i find hard at the moment is importing.

Just wondering if you are going to do any more on your mini-tutorial on Milkshape? I've been anxiously waiting to learn what you have found out and I’m sure it will be a benefit to all the custom scenery makers and would-be’s.
Thanks again for all you have done for RCT3.

I am lazy or too clever for the world - so I copy and paste from another thread :D
I have found the "Coaster Car 101" tutorial the easiest (so once in a while I got still stuck or it looked slighly different then in the pics )
Go to You can find it on this website http://modstothemax.net
Just register, then go to the download section (this is not possible before you register).
Go to those sections: Ultimate Ride/UR Tutorials.
Although the coaster car was modelled for another game, the tutorial will explain all the basics - I think I spent about 1-2 days doing this, but it depends on how much time you have. I know, you want to start modelling right now, but you need to learn the basics first.
