The Son Of Beast @ PKI injured 27 people today when splintered track pieces caused a depression in the track just before the infamous "wooden loop." About 5 people were hospitalized overnight, some with broken ribs and trouble breathing. From what was told, when everyone got back to the station, there were some coughing up blood and bleeding internally, others were hunched over in pain, and most riders had to be taken off by stretcher.
It's terrible news... though I don't think this will stop me from riding it... as long as they get the ride fixed up... which btw, it's closed indefinently
some stuff I took out of it in case you didn't want to read it heh:
CINCINNATI - A malfunction on an amusement park ride Sunday sent 27 people to hospitals, most with minor chest and neck injuries, a park official said.
The accident happened on the Son of Beast roller coaster at Paramount’s Kings Island just northeast of Cincinnati. WCPO-TV reported that witnesses saw the roller coaster come to an abrupt stop about 4:45 p.m.
Twenty-seven people were injured, Kaiser said. Seventeen had been released from hospitals within five hours of the accident and one had been admitted with injuries that weren’t life-threatening, she said.
When I rode the ride, I must admit it was a huge head-banger... I remember getting off the ride thinking that i'll never again try to sit near the back..
and that brings me to my word of advice: The farther front you are, the more enjoyable the ride is.....

i've been around.. just not posting... also i'm working a lot.. in fact i posted this after I got home... haha... but yeah... i was there.. and it's FUN..
it was my first time @ Kings Island.. and well.. The Beast is now my favorite coaster..
oh and from what i was told... Vortex is being torn down next year... as well as Top Gun.. some employees said Top Gun isn't bringing in that many people, and the Vortex's suppourts are sinking into the ground...

Based on what I've read about this accident, the coaster didn't crash. It was a sudden jolt that cause the coaster to suddenly slow down. It happened before the loop and the train still made it back to the station.
Here's the latest news on this: Son of Beast (http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060710/NEWS01/307100020).

Rohn Star is right. SOB didn't crash. There was probably something wrong with the track that caused the jolt.
BTW, SOB is not a headbanger; it can't be because it doesn't have over-the-shoulder-restraints.

well frist heh.. when I mean "headbanger," it's pretty rough... like... the farther back I sit, the bigger chance I get of having a headache after the ride..
also, here is another link to what happened:

they are saying that broken timber was the cause of the accident, and caused a "depression" in the track right before the loop. This caused the coaster to slam down which caused the injuries....
State inspectors shut down the Son of Beast roller coaster indefinately after finding “structural problems” with the ride this morning.
"A timber – one of the ride's wooden support beam– is “cracked and had actually splintered in places,” said Fred Dailey, director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture this afternoon."

It's odd... I was just on Son of Beast about 10 days ago, and thought it felt marginally smoother than the previous year. For Son of Beast, that's like saying the sledge hammer hit just the big toe, and not the whole foot.
On a stock message board for Cedar Fair, I had posted that I thought Son of Beast was the most-likely candidate for being a problem, and that I wouldn't be surprised to see it go the way of Dorney Park's Hercules within a few years. This incident reinforces my expectation that Son of Beast's future is cloudy.

When I eventually go (I wish), and if it's still there (again...) I will still ride it.

{sigh} And another one goes via the way of The Bat....
I never was one for wooden coasters anyway. They beat me around too much. lol
BTW, the injury rate is at 31.

The Son of Beast is a awesome roller coaster regardless if it results in injuries or not :p

The injury rate will continue to climb so they can have a class-action lawsuit about all the pain and suffering they're having. The rate will eventually max out at 5 people more than have ridden the ride all year. Each person will receive $0.03 in compensation.

What are you smoking? That coaster sucked from the day they opened it. No really, I was there like the second day it was open to the public.

Son of Beast-Great ride, horrible experince.
1:30 hour wait, for a headache.
Beast any day.
This wasnt the first time SOB had an accident. During construction, part of the ride collapsed. That is what caused the delayed opening of the ride.
I had never heard of Roller Coaster Corporation of America until the ride was built. They must be a very crappy company... like Togo.

^ They are notorious for building crappy coasters.
Such as White Canyon (Ouch, yes, I've ridden it), And Coaster Express.
Unlike Roller Coaster Corporation of America, Togo has *some* good creations.

I'm glad to see that others of you have had bad experiences on this ride. For a while, it seemed that me and my girlfriend were the only ones who had gotten majorly sick from Son of Beast. We thought it was just something in the way the coaster was running the day we were there, b/c everyone kept saying that they loved it. It was horrible. I've never gotten shaken like that in my life! And that's been several years ago, right after they built the thing... Beast, yes! Son of Beast, not again....

SOB shook me violently when I rode it last month. It was my first time on it, and my last. Others said that the middle row in each car wasn't too bad, but I rode the front of car 2 and it was absolutely horrible...the most uncomfortable I have ever been on a coaster. I really feared for my health, and if I could have zapped myself off the ride after the first drop bottomed-out I would have done!

The beggining of the ride is smooth (but that was 4 years ago), but then when you go down the drop, it makes u rethink about riding it again. I would do it again if the line was short, but an hour and a half wait after waiting an hour for Top Gun, forget it. Beast was a 15 minute wait that day. We rode that more times than any other ride (maybe tied with Racer), but PKI has some rough rides (SOB, Vortex... cant think of anyothers).
EDIT: I thought Togo's Viper at SFGADV was the roughest around, SOB changed my mind.

SOB is a piece of ****, lets hope they tear it down and put in a Intamin mega coaster. I vote for a EGF clone.;)

EGF looks like it would so fit in that space. You might have to mirror it, but that would be perfectly ok.

When I was at PKI, I'd also heard that Top Gun was probably going away. But being right next to SoB and SoB not running, I'll bet ridership is way up. Vortex would be my candidate for removal. For those that didn't like Hercules at Dorney, well, it was a whole lot smoother than SoB. But I can see CF taking out SoB because of it's mortal wounds as well as the roughness factor, unless they really retrack it so it is smoother.

Well I like Son of Beast, even though it was a rough ride, but that didn't bother me. I think it's a unique ride. Though I think the loop is over doing it, but that is where it's unique.

You want something unique for Kings Island, then actually build a good coaster for the park.:p I still say remove SOB and replace it with a Intamin mega coaster.:D
